Thanks Jerry Lee - I was wondering the exact same thing (why a crossover cable vs straight cable). I thought I had a misunderstanding there, but Daniel lucas answer made sense. auto mdix - that option that sense what cable is connected. The equipment is smart enough to make it work with the normal straight cable or a crossover. I was really glad you asked. When I saw the answer, I said "Whew!" :-)
Regarding shutting down and enabling DHCP services, your commands are exactly correct. I think the choice of router in this tutorial may be the 'gotcha'. I've replicated this tutorial in CPT and the commands work perfectly on a cisco 1941 router.
yes , but in today equipment it's irrelevant because we have auto mdix , in cas auto mdix is disactivated or the switch or router configuration doesn't allow it's use any more then and only them you will have problems
yes this caused me headache as well. in theory you connect R to PC with crossover but in PT it also works with straight through because the auto dmix function
Thanks for the extra tidbit about using "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig /renew". @ Algoriptimus: I looked it up and the correct command to toggle the dhcp service is indeed the one he mentioned, "service dhcp" / "no service dhcp", but does not work in Packet Tracer. If you wanted to delete your entire set of configurations for a specific pool is when you would use the "no ip dhcp pool MYPOOL1" command :) www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/ios/12_2/ip/configuration/guide/fipr_c/1cfdhcp.html#wp1018948table1018946
Question. So If I configure a DNS server on my default router will it automatically populate with the names of all the machines on the network. From what I can tell DNS is used to translate IP addresses of machines on the network into there physical names so that you can telnet into them or whatever. Am I right or am I off the mark here. I configured a DNS on my default router but when I ping host1 and host2 by name from the router (PC4, PC5) I fails to resolve the host name. Would appreciate any help you can give.
Dns will convert names of websites to ip addresses. So you could set the default Dns server as google, when a host wants to access a website the Dns server will then translate that name to ip. Hope that helps
How can I set a range of addresses to work in a subnet rather than giving out every single address in an individual octet? Any help would be appreciated!
+Charles Wood Network command will create a pool for your DHCP addresses ex network 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 not so you to do subneting or vlsm and assign that to your network address
Hi Dan, Lets say I have two VLANS, Network 10.1.1.0/24 (vlan1) and network 10.1.2.0/24 (vlan2) how do I set up DHCP on the router to distribute the 10.1.1.0 network to host belonging vlan1 and 10.1.2.0 to vlan2? Thanks

Hi , I'm having trouble setting up dhcp relay on my single area ospf network , can anybody advise , thanks
Thanks for the tutorial but why are you using a crossover cable to connect a PC to a router? Wouldn't you use a straight-through cable?
yes , but in today equipment it's irrelevant because we have auto mdix , in cas auto mdix is disactivated or the switch or router configuration doesn't allow it's use any more then and only them you will have problems
