Based on the owner and property manager's response to the situation, it's best you rent from a place where you won't have to deal with either parties again. Despicable how he tried to make it sound as if you're the problem when you've done your best to deal with the filthy apartment, the pest and then the mold. Tisha, I've been watching your videos for several months now, and absolutely love them! I'm a 30-something NYC native and can relate so much. I just wanted to say you should be incredibly proud! Advocating for yourself can be difficult, and doing that in NYC can be even harder. I've lived in my fair share of NYC apartments, and I will tell you these landlords 99% of the time don't care about you. Neither does the city. They don't care if there is mold, they don't care if there are leaks, infestations, or really scary issues (especially in the more affordable pre-war buildings). All they care about is charging high rent and cashing in. You have to stand up for yourself, even when they try to manipulate you and make it seem like you are the problem. They often get away with so much, and there aren't enough checks and balances in place to keep them from screwing tenants over. So, good on you for doing that! I hope your next place is well-maintained and safe with no issues. Sending lots of good luck your way.

Tisha...that is the first thing I was thinking! Get EVERYTHING in writing....do not move an inch w out having it in writing. I would go as far as having it notarized by a notary on the spot. Also, have a witness present. Absolutely.
I’m sorry that you went through this with your apartment! I work as a paralegal and used to work in housing law (tenant side). This is unfortunately so common. Mold is something that landlords tend to sweep under the rug with a fresh paint of color. Which hides the mold and never addresses it. My biggest takeaway from working in law is always leave a paper trail. You talk to someone, you email/text them right after saying something like, “It was nice talking you today. We talked about xyz and you said proposed abc and I agreed to do xyz.” It’s always best to have things in writing because it’s so easy for someone to go back on their word but not easy to do that when there’s written proof. I would even go to the extent of not talking to them on the phone. Email/text only. But that’s just me, not legal advice, just personal preference. But I’m glad that they are allowing you to break your lease and hopefully there’s a better apartment waiting to be your home! Maybe the universe has a better home for you two waiting out there 😊

The building management are scared that they will be fined as mold is serious issue I am surprised its handled in such manner in the US though. I think you should file a complain too after you get your deposit so other people coming after you are not affected. And yes you should get everything officially in writing. I watch Taylor morello vlogs and I actually knew from her videos her previous studio looked nice maybe its an idea to check with her :)) I think you should leave though asap or move chape at least and perhaps after all of this done do a full medical checkup for toxicity and mold in your body. I hope this helps and on a final note sometimes things doesn't go as we planned and we feel gutted but remember every rejection is protection o this happened for your highest good and even for the people coming after you. Previous tenant was nasty how she left apartment i had mold issues in my old apartment so bad i had bad coughing dizzy i had to throw my whole bedroom suite away even mattress they wouldn't compensate me nothing it took 6 and half months for them to move me to another apartment. When you move go in and deep clean first good luck in your next journey

Many people move there from other states or even countries and are excited to find one affordable apartment, but then they realize that has this problems but there was no way to know it beforehand. wow these apartment management and owners are really pathetic. i guess the last tenant didn't say anything considering the filthy way she lived. horrible. now you have moved but it still makes me so mad. i've been fighting with my management for over 1.5 years due to tenant next door smoking and upstairs noise. its impacted my health and made me so upset. they had me document the noise so i sent them 26 videos and still they had the nerve to tell me the noise is not coming from upstairs!!!!! i'm so angry. there is also mold here. moving is so hard and stressful but i have to do it!!! i hope you are so happy in your new place.
Smokers are a pain if you have them as neighbors. They damage your health when their smoke comes into your apartment, especially when they smoke on their balcony or next to an open window and it all comes right into your place if a window is open. Horrible and I hope more people raise this issue world wide so we have more strict bans on smoking anywhere in an apartment building.

Previous tenant was nasty how she left apartment i had mold issues in my old apartment so bad i had bad coughing dizzy i had to throw my whole bedroom suite away even mattress they wouldn't compensate me nothing it took 6 and half months for them to move me to another apartment. When you move go in and deep clean first good luck in your next journey

All the violations and complaints associated to a building are listed on the housing department website hpdonline.nyc.gov/hpdonline/. I’ll see where else I can leave review online.

Many people move there from other states or even countries and are excited to find one affordable apartment, but then they realize that has this problems but there was no way to know it beforehand. wow these apartment management and owners are really pathetic. i guess the last tenant didn't say anything considering the filthy way she lived. horrible. now you have moved but it still makes me so mad. i've been fighting with my management for over 1.5 years due to tenant next door smoking and upstairs noise. its impacted my health and made me so upset. they had me document the noise so i sent them 26 videos and still they had the nerve to tell me the noise is not coming from upstairs!!!!! i'm so angry. there is also mold here. moving is so hard and stressful but i have to do it!!! i hope you are so happy in your new place.
Smokers are a pain if you have them as neighbors. They damage your health when their smoke comes into your apartment, especially when they smoke on their balcony or next to an open window and it all comes right into your place if a window is open. Horrible and I hope more people raise this issue world wide so we have more strict bans on smoking anywhere in an apartment building.

@@TishaShrestha yeah.... something to let ppl know, so they don't get sick because mold is dangerous and some ppl won't have the ability to move out or break a lease, so they'll just keep on getting sick :/ maybe the health dept can do something.

I wish you had left him on speaker while you recorded (obv not needed to have us as an audience listen at all but for your own records) since NY is a one-party consent state when it comes to recording someone on the phone because he better not play around with you getting that in writing.
