    Great video! I think the tabless battery technology may allow cooling from the end of the battery so larger cells can be cooled nearly as efficiently as smaller cells.

    • @cleantechnica
      @cleantechnica  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, the question is whether that is enough for the million mile drivetrain, better cooling means better lifespan. Like I said hard to say how much the technological improvements tip the scales one way or the other.

    The solar story with the panels that can pull back. One use would over industrial facilities where large equipment could be operated under it but sometimes needs the solar out of the way for crane use. We put shade roofs over HVAC electronics in the desert to lower the impact of the intense sun/heat and improve reliability.

      If I understand correctly, the requirement is for _any_ kind of charging, even just Type 2 AC, but this is much better than nothing.

    Great content, and good luck with the channel. One note: the volume goes way up and down between segments... makes it hard to have the vid on in the background and go about one's chores. Also, need to improve audio quality overall.

      @cleantechnica  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yea, audio quality and volume levels, I had it all once tuned to perfection then a hard drive broke and those setting were lost, I hope to get around to fixing that in the next few weeks.

    Sony is missing a sensor technology that would be very helpful -- infrared sensors. If you live in the country as I do, infrared sensors that would help in spotting wildlife, especially at night, is almost a requirement for autonomous driving in remote regions.

    • @cleantechnica
      @cleantechnica  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most cameras are capable of capturing at least the short part of the infrared spectrum, but even for the longer part you still need an infrared light shining on the subject to get infrared signals back. As far as I am aware no autonomous vehicle uses that at the moment.

    Buying the powertrain from Tesla would make lots of sense, because that's what Tesla does exceptionally well. In all other aspects of the car Tesla has a lot of catching up to do, but in the powertrain departments, only Koreans got close. But I am slightly worried that Tesla offers this - sounds as if they expect to have excess production capacity.
    For autopilot (at least where it shads now) I am not so sure. Tesla's _promises_ are certainly ahead of others, but the execution? Not so much.

    • @cleantechnica
      @cleantechnica  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea Tesla could have more supply of Autopilot computers if needed. They can get more 18650 cells and S & X powertrains than they currently have demand for. Also 3 & Y batteries and powertrains could be expanded faster at Giga Nevada if a new contract warrants it. The only reason that GF1 is not growing is becuase it doesn't need to and at the moment they don't want it to, not until they are ready for it.

      @@cleantechnica This is most interesting. Imagine a car with the sophistication of Jaguar I-Pace but the efficiency of Tesla Model 3.

    • @cleantechnica
      @cleantechnica  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What exactly is sophisticated in the I-Pace?...

    • @bazoo513
      @bazoo513 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cleantechnica Oh, just the car. Every bit of the driver's and passenger environment. Build quality. HMI. Compared to that, Tesla is a go-cart. Very quick and efficient one, true, and with fart mode, but I don't buy their "minimalism" excuses.
      I am not very strongly particular to Jag, but I much prefer the styling of I-Pace compared to EQC or E-Tron.
      If I spend €50k+ on a car, I expect _flawless_ human-machine interface, luxurious interior (that does not mean exotic wood or hand-stitched leather - or leather at all, for that matter, but exquisite comfort) and all the little pieces of convenience Tesla has yet to learn to design and squeeze into their cars' budget. You know, like HUD, well thought through switchgear so you _never_ have to hunt on touch screen menus while driving; phone integration for both OSes, situational awareness cues from "autopilot" sensors right in front of your eyes; cooled glove box or another compartment; voice recognition that actually works, and works _locally,_ without a need for cellular reception; auto-parking that also actually works; two deep side by side cup/bottle holders with Peltier element heating one and cooling the other; premium sound system with speakers in headrests, among other places...

    • @ZacharyShahan
      @ZacharyShahan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I heard that Tesla is getting close to level 5 full autonomy by the end of this year. I'm excited and can't wait for our driver less future to arrive. I want a level 5 fully autonomous self driving Tesla, so that I can sleep, text and talk on my phone, be at my destination and go to a bar to have a drink and not have to worry about drunk driving, since the self driving car will be my designated driver and drive me home safely. I hope that Teslas will be less expensive and more affordable to own in a few months.

    • @cleantechnica
      @cleantechnica  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Patrick. It's a good thing you stumbled upon our channel becuase this is a common misconception. You see what Tesla/Elon meant by saying this is that Autopilot will be feature complete by the end of the year, which means it can do almost all of the things a future RoboTaxi can do but the driver still needs to pay attention. It is likely going to take another few years for the reliability to go from 95% to 99% to reach level 4 and then a few more years to reach 99.999%, where each last fraction of a percent is going to get harder to perfect upon. Unlike some I am hopeful we can stop paying attention in about 5 years based on the new 4D technology Elon described. (this was covered in the last published news show #17)
      Edit: also keep in mind the statistics is per mile so at 99% something is likely to go wrong after 100 km/mi

      @Wolfgang Preier Considering some first hand experience with Autopilot in LA and on German roads, I'm going to disagree about LA taking more time than Munich 😀

    • @cleantechnica
      @cleantechnica  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No actually I have not been to Munich specifically, though I have been in multiple other German cities and drove through the country's highways numerous times and even with Autopilot one time. I did not realize that the infrastructure in Munich was a lot worse than the rest of Germany. Though it's hard to imagine roads switching from single to double lanes constantly and without line marking on the road like in LA, something Autopilot couldn't handle even though there are so many more Tesla's in California than there are in any other part of the world.

    Suggestion: learn/practice English "th" as in "other" - not "udder"

    • @daegueric
      @daegueric 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I teach English as a foreign language at a university abroad. This man 'gets the ball over the net' in fine fashion and doesn't need nit-picking over pronunciation.
      /th/ , /r/ vs /l/, /s/ vs /z/, and literally every single vowel sound, are very rarely accurately replicated among EFL/SL speakers. Syllables are added. The wrong syllables are stressed, too, and this can make speech unintelligible. This fella is really easy to understand.
      I'm sure your suggestion has his best interests in mind, but it's unnecessary.
