      Ha! I’m going to be doing the same thing on Labor Day. Our lawn was looking great so after the video I decided to have a real irrigation system put in. Unfortunately, the work got delayed a week and the backyard fried in 95+ degrees. So our lawn should be looking great again just before the first frost. 😆

    I've used electric mower for years. I love them versus the extra maintenance of another motor. The trick to mowing with a corded tool is start at the house outlet and move outward in straight lines. If you do that, you never get the cord in the path of the mower.

    Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

      Other than the cord, I love this thing. I probably power rake too often. 🤣

    What were the after steps?
    Lay down weed and feed?
    Then lay down some fertilizer?
    Then a layer of moss?
    What kind of moss?
    I'm in Central TX and have Bermuda grass. Thx. *I bought the new Sun Joe 15in.

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Living in the Northeast, I’m not familiar with how to successfully grow Bermuda grass. Once I’m done with the SunJoe, my usual process for fescue and rye grass is: 1) put down a thin layer of peat moss; 2) seed; 3) put down a food specifically for new grass (if you use a weed and feed product, be sure it is made specifically for new grass else the seed won’t germinate), 4) run a rake lightly over everything (you don’t want to bury the seed though); and 5) water.
      Aside from watering a few times a day, I also keep our bird feeders fully stocked or else there will be a flock of sparrows eating all the grass seed. 🤣 Some folks use straw to detract the birds and hold in moisture, but I’ve found straw to be ineffective against those hungry buggers.

    I went with the 805, just put it together today.
    Used thatcher today: 5 set position for my yard and 10 for my neighbor.
    Solid 4.5 hrs later worked great!
    Bought this make due to it's review's and everyone is correct about the bag..... but what are you going to do.
    The big test will be how will our lawns look in June!?!?
    Crossing my fingers!

    great video...any suggestions for the best seed for north California , i like thick fescue just cannot get reliable seed

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reliable seed is an issue. I like fescue as well and live in the Northeast. I bought some expensive “WaterSaver” seed on Amazon thinking it would be a worthwhile investment, but it had a 2% germination rate and was a complete waste of $. I’ve used Vigoro’s Contractor Mix (used in the video), which grows fast and well, but some of the grasses were invasive and eventually crawled into the gardens… so no to that! I don’t like Scott’s, but I have had success with their WaterSmart seed as well as mild success with Pennington’s NorthEast mix. I guess the short answer is I don’t have much to recommend for Northern CA. Sorry!

    I just assembled the earlier model. I could not get the thatcher cylinder in, the angle was off and I couldn't figure out how to resolve it. In the end, I decided the black platform that takes the two screws was to high. I whacked it a couple of time, the black platform receded more into the base and the problem was resolved

    What a great review!! Well thought out and the timeline from start to finish showed me exactly what I needed. Any questions I had were answered regarding the Sunjoe were answered. Can you share what seed and fertilizer you used? I am also wondering the time of year for your lawn maintenance. Thanks for the help! Great video!!

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you enjoyed the review. For the video I used what I had at the time which was Vigoro contractors mix. In the back yard I mixed it with Vigoro dense shade fescue. The fertilizer I used was Scott’s triple action for New grass. I’m going to try Pearl’s Premium seed for overseeding this year to see how it does (my neighbor uses it and his lawn is even better than mine). 🧐 Last year I tried using WaterSaver, which I got on Amazon, for a few bare spots, but the germination rate was only 20%… it was a waste of $. One thing I’ll say about the Vigoro contractors mix is that it germinates well and fast… of course the sparrows like it too. 😂 I’ve used Scott’s Smart Seed and Pennington’s NorthEast mix, but results were just OK.

      Thanks! Today I ran the detaching cylinder (power rake), overseeded and fertilized. I waited until the lawn had two mowings and the temps got a little higher. Since I used the Sun Joe last season, the amount of dead debris on the surface wasn't as much as last year (only two barrels). I was also pleasantly surprised that the lawn didn't look as bad as last year when I was done because most of last year's grass survived the winter.

    Are you supposed to dethatch first then use the other blade then seed?

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whether you power rake (cylinder with tines), dethatch (cylinder with blades) or both depends on the state of the lawn. Before I seed, I power rake (tines) first to get up the dead grass clippings and then dethatch (blades) to loosen the soil and remove thatch (dead root balls above and below the surface).

  • @justinjones5281

  • @xSpaceInvader
    @xSpaceInvader 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Walking away from the outlet and back to it is why you are having to toss around the extension cord so much. Go left to right keeping the cord on the outlet side and move away from the outlet one row at a time. Less hassle moving the cord around.

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The order is really personal preference in my opinion. I prefer to remove the top debris first with the power rake cylinder and then “roto-til” with the scarifier to loosen up the soil for seeding and removing thatch.

  • @tazocitrus

    Hello, Before I buy one of these I'm hoping to ask if it will work for my purposes. Do you think the scarifier blades will do a good job of roughing up the top surface of the soil on bare patches of lawn? I need something that will kind of chop up the bare patches like a really shallow cultivating but not tear up the grass in the non-bare areas. Thanks so much for your insights!

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The scarifier will work on bare patches, but it is intended to thin the grass to promote growth and break up the soil for better soil to seed contact. So, it will remove some existing grass. If you just have a few bare patches, you can just use a metal leaf rake (or groundskeeper 2 with thin tines works well) to clear and break up the soil, then add 1/16” of top soil, then seed, lightly rake (don’t bury the seed), add some fertilizer for new grass, add some hay/straw to keep it moist (also keeps birds away), and lightly water a few times a day until the seed germinates.
      We have this one bare spot my other half complains about because it’s a high traffic zone, so this year I seeded the heck out of it and used straw (looks messy until the grass buries it), and now it looks great!

    • @diverdave4056
      @diverdave4056 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used mine to rototill a 200 square foot bare patch so i could seed it ... and it worked GREAT . I took a couple of passes and the grass seed grew fast !

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I honestly don’t remember given I’ve used so many brands over the past year. It could have been Vigoro’s contractor mix, Pennington’s Northern mix or Scott’s smart seed. Last fall I tried WaterSaver grass seed I got on Amazon, which is a thin fescue, but it’s too soon to tell how well it wintered over.

    1. Cut, dethatch, and scarify your lawn at a diagonal rather than up and down as you do. Why? The diagonal line is longer with less turning around. 2. Forget the bag and use an air blower to move the cuttings over to one side to reduce racking, etc. I don't use a bag on my lawnmower. 3. Contact Ego and ask them to make a dethatcher and scarifier tool. I use an Ego lawnmower, self propelled and their snowblower and their lithium batteries easily handle a heavy load.

    • @BruceAlanR

    Kinda of disagree with all your dislikes. You’re getting a cheap plastic “toy” because you don’t want to buy the $1,400 metal one. That is to heavy and can’t be easily stored. As for the cord. Anyone that ever used a vacuum would know that you just deal with it and learn a good pattern along with cord manipulation. Wait till the gas powered one breaks down and see how you feel because you can’t fix it haha also maybe add some soil in the divots so it’s not an issue anymore. They have a tool for that 🤷🏼‍♂️golf course use them.

      I was going to say the same about the extension cord. I have a 100’ 12 gauge RIDGID chord to get the areas outside the fence; however, 10,000 ft (I’m assuming sq ft so 100x100) may be too much for this green monster. Wouldn’t think so though. If you got the extended warranty, contact Sun Joe and they’ll send you a new unit… although it may also burn out. Try using one 50’ cord and see if you have better results. Good luck and post back if you get it resolved.
