Thanks - helped me today with my W212 parking brake. For me only the pedal spindle and the grey steel spring needed lubricating with PTFE spray lube. On cold winter mornings the pedal would not rise at all and needed to be pulled up with my foot. Now after applying PTFE spray to the spring and spindle the pedal flies up with a positive clunk - just like it used to. I think the pedal torsion spring binds when cold because the cold makes it contract making the pedal stick. For me, normal operation was restored without the need to spray lubricant into the cable.
Not wishing to poke my nose in but this job may come back. Normally the fault is the park brake cable quadrant under the back seat is partially seized. Same fix, remove seat base and inspection panel and soak for ages. Really common mate.
That isn’t poking your nose in, that is what this place is about. Finding common problems & informing others. Now if it does come back I know where to go to find/fix the return visit issue fast and effectively due to your reply. That’s brilliant Trevor, I am not aware of & not seen this quadrant before so thanks mate 👍👍 And keep the tips coming please 🙏🙏
Mine is the same and it's heat related. If its really cold when I get in the car I have to pull the lever and put my foot under the pedal to loft it up. The colder it is then the more effort is required. If I get in the car in thr afternoon and it's warm, there is no problem. So I'll take your advice and squirt some WD40 down the cable, and if it's at all possible, get to the fulcrum point on the pedal and give that a dose of liquid magic as well.
I did this last night, and this morning it was freezing cold, and the pedal was a little freer, but still would not come up by itself. So the pedal must have been contributing to the overall stickyness. I may have to look at the quadrant under the seat. I have the Coupe model, does anyone know how the back seat base lifts up so I can get to the inspection cover ? in my old CLK, you just lifted the base form the back of the seat, this does not seem to be the case on the E220 as far as I can see.
@@davefrance3721 the seat should be easy enough to lift, check to see if there are any bolts along where the seat meets the carpet. If not it just pulls up. Also I had seen comments about that lever underneath the back seat but it wasn’t on mine but my one is an estate 🤞🤞
I’ve had these levers disassembled on a few occasions now Dave & it’s quite a cool setup. It is just a spring around a shaft that the lever pivots on & the spring center is used to grab onto the shaft. So there are no moving parts, a good design but it too me 4 hrs to figure that out the 1st. time ☹️
Top job Peter, hopefully will only be back for other jobs next time , good old wd, we all use it and it's good stuff , loads of companies have tried to copy it , but no success 😎
It would probably be nice if I do encounter this kinda fault again I’d like to see this quadrant & record that repair also, just for comprehensiveness. Cheers Mike 😉👍

That’s brilliant, well done mate 💪💪💪
Thanks for this fix. My local Mercedes dealer wanted £174 to tell me what is wrong, before actually fixing it.
You are welcome Oscar. Hopefully it will fix it for you 🤞🤞👍

I think there was an inspection cover on previous models but pretty sure there isn’t one on the 212 unfortunately
Thank you, very helpful. I have been ripped off my local garage.
Hopefully this helped you sort it out 🤞🤞🤞
Informative post, just fixed my Eclass parking brake from your instructions.
Thanks very much, best regards Tom Byrne
Good man Tom, well done and thank you for letting me know 💪💪👏👏👏
worked a treat on my 2014 c220 cdi coupe. Thanks
Well done mate 💪💪💪
Fixed my e220 it had same loose brake it helps thanks a lot.
Excellent work Judah 💪💪💪
Worked a treat, thank you!
Well done mate 💪💪💪
Trying this tomorrow 🤞 it's as easy as you made it look
One commenter mentioned an adjustable arm underneath the rear seat but it isn’t on this model. It is too hard though, hopefully it helps 🤞🤞🤞
Thanks for the video.
Any reason you use WD40 instead of something like silicon spray?
@@bigbluechopper24 nope, just whatever was handy when I needed it. Hopefully it helps your issue though 🤞🤞

@davefrance3721 same issue for me on coupe. Did you manage to resolve yours? Anything to do mechanism under back seat?
Good fix

So do you still call it a handbrake even if it is operated by a foot?
😂😂😂 very interesting thought 🤔🤔
I suppose parking brake would be the correct terminology 😬😬
That’s a fix Peter good old WD40 👍
We call it ‘Willie Duggan 40’ don’t ask me why because I haven’t got a clue. Watch it and I bet you’ll be calling it Willie Duggan next week too 😂😂

There should just be one brand of car.....then we'd know all the fixes.
Wouldn’t that be handy, if only life was that simple 😬👍👍

It might help someday 🤞🤞🙏
