Another great song that remembers where, when and what I was doing back in the day. I think God things did not turn out the way I wanted them to turn out.
By the way, I just bought one of Michael Hearne's older cd's and this song was on it. He played at Frog Joy Farm in Chriesman Tx...I loved his playing and honest approach to the lyrics of the songs he shared. I play this song over and over and have just found that I sing much of the same harmonies on those drives hitting repeat, as he does, here...much love ❤
The "picker" is Michael Hearne, an excellent player, writer, picker, and performer who plays in and around Taos and Red River, New Mexico. He's also the nephew of the great Bill and Bonnie Hearne, Check him out - one of the best.
I’ll never get tired of this song, NEVER! Yeah yeah, Ricky Scaggs version is good, was a big hit sold millions of copies, made him famous, but Shake’s version BY FAR IS the best EVER! And all the guys he’s had picking with him through the years are always top notch too. I’ve seen seen a few and this guy is no exception. He’s an outstanding guitar player and great vocals too. And of course *Deep in the West* is another all time favorite.
Lolly Seely these two, along with Mike Roberts on bass are the bomb, top shelf. I prefer this version over anyone else's as well. To top it off, all three are top shelf guys too.
This is NOT a Ricky Skaggs' song! This is a Shake Russell song that Ricky covered. I highly respect Ricky Skaggs, but for this song, there is no comparison between Ricky's version and listening to the songwriter do it. In keeping with my lifelong philosophy that no one does a song bettter than the person that wrote it. That having been said, this is one of favorite all time songs. I heard Shake do this at a concert in Houston not long after he wrote it, late 70's.

Michael Hearne's guitar picking makes me cry as my soul shakes with the utmost satisfaction in musical hopes...

I agree! I remember a while back when I checked out Skaggs version of "You've Got a Lover" & I thought he just ruined this beautiful song!
My favorite Ricky Skaggs’ song. Thank you for writing such a great song.
