I was thinking the same. My Bernina has three thread cutters. One at the bobbin winder, one in the bobbin case and another on the side for cutting at the end of seams. This idea is clever but also seems like a good way to get injured. For the cost of an ER visit one could simply upgrade to a marginally better machine with a built- in cutter and probably an automatic needle threader, too
I have a Kenmore from the 70s and it has a thread cutter.
Excellent. You could ALSO put a bobbin inside the case and use it for hand sewing...pull the thread, cut it off with that metal piece (as if it were floss) and thread your needle. No more loose thread in your mending box. !

I had the same thought! It would be great to put together a travel sewing kit. The thread will remain contained. I hope a bobbin is not to wide for the case.
May use the narrow plastic bobbins, I want to say 66

I do this! Also use dental floss for sewing on buttons!!
My machine has a thread cutter, but its location causes the loss of about six inches of bobbin and upper thread each time I cut. This is a terrific idea that will help me in my mission to be as "zero waste" as possible and I'm definitely going to try this hack, as well as the comb and razor blade. Thank you so very much! 👍🙏💖

Yes, I agree, but my older industrial machine doesn’t, so I may implement this. It is a good idea, for the older ones. I’ll probably cut my finger trying to cut it out, though…lol

Im lucky, i still sew on my mom’s old Singer 404 machine that has a thread cutter already built into the back of the machine similar to this video. I use it every time I sew. So handy to have.

But sewing machines already have thread cutters!
Obviously this one didn't. Many older machines and leather machines do not.
That's true. But, the location of it on some machines causes you to "waste" a bit of your thread. My machines has one but it's at least four inches away from where my sewing is, causing me to lose a lot of thread when I ever use the cutter. 😉
Some don't mine does and one of my sergers also has one

I don't believe I've ever owned a machine that didn't have a thread cutter on the back side of the bar to which you attach the presser foot 🤔. I, however, commend you're ingenuity in fixing the issue on your machine 😉 😘 👍 🎉 ‼
