The “Fall Off”

  • Anything good can turn sour. And in the cutthroat world of hip-hop, even greatness can eventually turn into a cross to bear. In a genre that demands more and is always looking for its artists to up their game, both the hyper-competitive make-up of the industry and the unmatched ruthlessness of the fanbase has meant that reaching the top isn’t always the final destination, but another obstacle to navigate.

Drake is never truly going to fall off in terms of success. The decline is in the quality of the music bc he knows that anything he drops or is featured in will do well on the charts. The real problem is that Drake fans think that all of his songs that reach the top of the charts are the best songs they’ve ever heard. I’ll still listen to his music but a lot of his current stuff doesn’t hit the same as his music from 2011-2015
    Edit: Honestly... nevermind.

The whole concept of “falling off” is what’s hurting artists and our perception of them. The only thing that should be considered when talking about an artist falling off is their quality of new music. Commercial success and overall perception shouldn’t matter. Artists shouldn’t be worried about billboard and critical acclaim when trying to express themselves through music and making a great product.

Except, with Nicki the same respectful and balanced conversations around mental health aren’t usually applied. Her career and impact has put her in a position that can’t be surpassed. She’s currently on her longest ever career Hiatus and announced retirement last year. Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

There's a reason people think that Drake does not have a masterpiece album. Yall want hits, not cohesive bodies of work. Yall want fire #1's but don't want albums that'll put the artist's name in their own iconic lane as a one of a kind. Drake is a GOAT, no doubt but us saying he's got no masterpiece is us saying we want better from him. We've seen better from him. We want Drake the artist, not Drake the hit machine. We've had enough of the latter. He has to revise what content he's putting out. It sounds the repetitive bro. Girls, money, mob ties, being #1, heartbreak blah blah blah. Same ish, different beats. He's gotta take a break & be free from the pressure & anticipation. I think that's when we'll get the best from him. Until then, I expect the same content he's been giving with better production. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I think in hip hop, there are 2 things that can happen to a great. 1) They eventually fall off and become forgotten or become just another rapper or 2) they reach a point of reverence where they are looked at with nothing but respect by other greats and gain a die hard following of fans. Examples of the latter are able to fall back and release a project whenever they feel like it and still do decent sales. Obvious examples of this case are Jay Z and Eminem.

Bro that no classic album argument sht pisses me off so bad, but everyones entitled to their opinions. For one i feel like to state whether or not an artist has a classic body of work, is more so a thing that should be left for a particulars artist fan base to decide because they ofc spend more time with it. Its all opinion based. As a fan of Drake tho, drake definitely has classic albums. Imo especially nwts and iyrtitl. Despite nwts not winning a grammy which also had me mad at the time, its really a beautiful album. Im not gonna state everything i LOVED about the album, but that album is well rounded, it gave us everything to lyrics, production quality, and is overall sonically pleasing, and is perhaps the reason why i started rapping. I will never forget when people photoshopped their faces on the nwts album cover 😂, that in itself makes that album a classic. It was a whole vibe to it, and certainly gives off nostalgia. This album cover was plastered every where, on twitter, facebook etc. Its no way you hear nwts and don't think about the summers of 2013 and when he dropped the versace remix a few months prior to its release. I prolly feel like that tho because i am a fan idk. But nwts is forever in my mind. This is literally the same for iyrtitl. Cant tell me when you hear iyrtitl you don't think about 10 bands blasting in people's cars in the summer. This is the album that conveyed to people he's not all soft and buddy buddy. Come on, its no way when you hear iyrtitl, back 2 back dont come to mind or vice versa....
I could keep going bro. Drake is a legend hands down bro and him falling off is not a discussion for him yet. I could've worded this better but yeah....
