This game's story is mainly based on the comic "SDガンダム外伝 騎士ガンダム物語" by author:"ほしの竜一" (1989~1993) on Japan's "コミックボンボン" comic magazine. Most important characters/events in the manga has been put in this game. Like the "巨人サイコゴーレム" (PsychoGolem, boss in the pyramid), you got to find 光の弓矢 (the shining arrow) and use it to shot off the crystal from his fore head, or else all normal attack can only deal 1 damage. (But critical attack deals damage as normal, so high level team can ignore the shining arrow.) And in later game you can find the white base (battleship PEGASUS), it servers as the airship in Final Fantasy. No more teleport door needs. If you could find and read the manga (not OVA, it's pace is too fast), it might be ... a little help? This game's difficulty is a little unbalanced for player who doesn't follow designer's purpose. This game won't stop you enter areas not suitable for your current team level. For example the teleport door from left to right = easy to hard. If you solve these doors from left to right, you are fine. If you enter the right most door in the beginning then you are toasted. Even walk out from the initial castle toward 4 o'clock direction for a shot distance, you may encounter random map monster Baby Satan that's a very strong end-game enemy. I think the game's difficulty is suitable for it era. If you want some modern tuned style difficulty, I recommend God Medicine: Fantasy Sekai no Tanjou (ゴッドメディスン ファンタジー世界の誕生 / GB / 1993). This one tunes very well (if you can read Japanese).
Jeremy: "Knight Gundam's faux-England isn't based on actual history or Arthurian legend or anything like that-" Me: "Oh, good, that means they have more room to be creative, and original, and surprising. Y'know, really telling their own stories, and showcasing their own ideas, and-" Jeremy: "-instead, it's presented as a parody of Dragon Quest." Me: "Oh, never mind."
It’s like they have took the tile sets of Final Fantasy Legend and redrew everything slightly. And that classroom at 3:37 with tables and chairs may as well have come straight out of FFL. At 8x8 pixels these characters have to be on the simple side to be legible, but ... they’re not
Interesting. I didn't realize that the Knight Gundam and Lacroa existed this far back. I only found out about them from the 2004 SD Gundam show that aired on Cartoon Network. Also, as a Gundam nerd, I should point out that the caption at 0:42 should probably be "Jaburo".
I picked up a copy of this at a Flea Market among a bunch of import Game Boy games (which, after a little research revealed that pretty much all of them were kusoge).
Yep that's a lot of Japanese GB games though there's some great ones in there. This ain't one of them sadly, the music even sucks and most remixes I found here on TH-cam are far better than the OST of the game itself.
When I first got into Gundam I found a copy of this somewhere for cheap, but I've never been able to play it for more than 15 minutes at a time without getting bored or annoyed. I'm not sure if your assessment of it being about the same is vindicating, or a bit of a downer. Oh well. Also, since I've found that YouTubing About Gundam is at least 75% getting gently corrected about points of trivia by Gundam fans: It's spelled "Jaburo," not "Jaboru." Kind of refreshing to fall on this side of the fence for once!
As somebody who happened to be in Japan at the time, I hate to admit it but GB games were generally anything from overly simplistic to crap in its early years. I remember wishing they were at least as good as NES games. Both Lacroan Heroes and Kunitori Monogatari were as decent (or bad if you prefer) as all other titles. The only thing you're really missing here, if you were missing anything at all, is the nostalgia goggles.
Sounds like a fine game to me. Sounds like you have a bit of a vendetta against these types of games for some reason. :\ I guess I like 8-bit RPGs, though, and there are probably better Gundam ones than this.
@@JeremyParish I'm just saying it sounded a bit like that in this video, because your comments about RPGs were very odd. I'd be a bit surprised if that's the case in actuality, though.
There were plenty of these games for literally every console... 3 or more for the Famicom alone... all rather uninspired RPGs, like in this case. There's plenty more where that came from. There were quite a few shoddy RPGs released even for the GB all things considered.
Super-deformed Gundams as Sengoku period historical figures? As a TV show for children? I understand that the world is full of completely inexplicable rubbish TV shows, especially in the 1980s into the 1990s. But I must ask: WHHHHYYYYYY???
You keep telling in your videos that Bandai let down Nintendo''s handheld to focus on their own consoles but it's totally not the case. There were even more Bandai games and Gundam games in particular on the GBA and NDS and so on...
The WonderSwan platform was viable between 1999-2002. Bandai published exactly zero games for the Game Boy family during that period (see here: gamefaqs.gamespot.com/company/7237-bandai). Obviously, once their own platform died, they went back to where the money was.
There's a lot of ways of being introduced to the Gundam franchise. Maybe one could watch the more recent anime, or maybe start with the 1979 original series, maybe the compilation movies. Any one of these, one could argue is the best approach. But you sure found the worst one. It's game boy games.
You'll be happy to know that, in the years since this episode went live, I have made my way through the entirety of U.C. (beginning with the original 0079 TV series), and it was a LOT more enjoyable than this disaster.
Keep going, Parish. Endure. We all believe in you.

Boy, Gundam went a long way. I thought it was just about a scared kid piloting a robot and harming civillians and mass genocide and stuff.
This game existed side by side at stores with Gundam 0083 and its colony drop. That franchise is… um, versatile.

"Think of 'Knight Gundam' as a sort of Ewok" - somewhere, someone at Bandai can feel a stabbing sensation, lol

Love the use of Super Game Boy 2 in these videos. I have one too, and it's neat. =)

Great video, as usual. I'm glad you didn't do a big Gundam-alooza, my brain has its limits.

Gundam La Croix Heroes
I tried so hard to find a way to work a La Croix reference in here but it was beyond even my mighty pun-powers.

@1:52 Heh Princess Fraw Bow
So this is all well and good but you didn't explain what the robot equivalent of a puff-puff is
Given the creativity on display in this game, it's probably called a "puff-puff."
Whoooo Xeno shoutout
I wonder when you will stumble across the Super Robot Wars series.
love your content jeremy
actually played my first gundam SD gba a few days ago and fell in love with it!
So it sounds like bandai was the ljn of japan during this era?
WOW has it really been 100 games already!?
Matthew Groves I need to make a custom Blu Ray video with the rips.
Oof. First Ultraman, and now this.
a hack n' slash version for switch just came out (only for Japanese region)
Sounds like a fine game to me. Sounds like you have a bit of a vendetta against these types of games for some reason. :\ I guess I like 8-bit RPGs, though, and there are probably better Gundam ones than this.
A vendetta against RPGs? Haha... that's a good one.

Wait there are 6 SD Gundam games on the Gameboy?! Like WTF, talk about like a little too many, I get Gundam was a popular Anime but geez thats a lot.
SailorVenusFan no that's not a lot look at the amount of sd Gundam games the psp has
There were plenty of these games for literally every console... 3 or more for the Famicom alone... all rather uninspired RPGs, like in this case. There's plenty more where that came from. There were quite a few shoddy RPGs released even for the GB all things considered.
Take a look at this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Gundam_video_games
The amount of Gundam games is unreal.
SailorVenusFan You mean Gundam SD, The kid friendly anime which borrows the giant robots from Gundam.
The hell song
Is there a gundam final fantasy game?
Great game...
You can read Japanese?
It's a very very weird game.

As with most bad things in the world these days: "Because money."
@@JeremyParish you think that it there the sd show of course

Bandai strikes again. And somehow their Game Boy games are even more sloppy and uninspired than the majority of their Famicom game library...
