Pumping up the illusion/delusion of Trump's higher levels of popularity (a) causes a 'herd mentality' that might affect some independents and increase his votes, (b) might dispirit the Democrats, (c) seems to fit Trump's pattern of having shills in audiences to pump up the crowds' enthusiasm and create the false impression that Trump is going to 'win'.
The New York Times May 24th, 2024 article FINALLY admits the Trump-favoring polls are BADLY slanted! From the beginning of the article: "The polls have shown Donald Trump with an edge for eight straight months, but there’s a sign his advantage might not be quite as stable as it looks: His lead is built on gains among voters who aren’t paying close attention to politics, who don’t follow traditional news and who don’t regularly vote."

More or less. Real Clear Politics shows a combined pole rating for both candidates after the debate. Trump is up maybe two or three points above Biden. Other poles show Trump up a few points here and there above Biden. Keep in mind that these poles are just a snapshot in time, not how things are going to play out all the way to election day.

Basically it's a form of verbal diarrhea that Trump is really good at spewing every which way on multiple topics to the point you really can't pin them down very well. It's not perfect, and you can maybe pick out something he said that's a lie and refute it. Essentially the tactic is just used to overwhelm somebody, and it worked well, because he sounded like he was his usual self spouting BS at one of his rallies. If there were real moderators at the last debate that really wasn't a debate, Trump could have been put in his place and tamped down on his nonsense.
