I remember being 5 years old and hiding behind the front seat of my parent's pink Chrysler Imperial at the drive-in in Biloxi, Mississippi whenever the screen turned red. This movie scared me so frightfully, and I thought of it many times afterwards, often had nightmares about it.
Not me. Even when I was little I thought this was the dumbest damn thing ever! And stuuuuuuuupid humans! Didn't see the giant 100ft tall bat rat spider looming above? Idiots.
It creeped me out real bad to think that one Astronaut had undergone all that training and flown so far through cold space only to wind up being slowly digested in the acidic goo of a giant amoeba. What a way to go.
It kind of reminds me of Kong Skull Island where the human characters mistake some spider legs as trees. The difference is that the spider in that movie (Mother Long-Legs) blended with the trees so it looked part of it. Here, the characters didn't even looked up.

Its not like they couldn't see the whole damn thing in the middle of nowhere. It would of been more realistic if she said:Wow a 40 foot Rat-bat-Spider-Nightmare standing in the middle of nowhere minding its own business! Lets hack off a piece of its leg and see what it does!
I saw this movie in 1960 when it came out. I was 10. I loved puppet rat/bat/spider eat-em-upilous. What grossed me out was the GIANT AOMEBA. ugh.... Today I watch the film and understand it better of course. Those astronauts were leaving a trail of destruction on another world and someone else's property. I would send the Aomeba Dog after them as well. I love the warning at the end of the film.

One of the coolest monsters of this era, for sure. The screen being all red just made it look even creepier than it was--keeping in mind that this was a marionette and looked the part. With today's SPFX, if it was handled well, this would be even better than it was already.
1:59 Notice the way that leg spike she hacked off landed perfectly between those those two little branches on the left side of the screen. I bet the people on the set of the movie was like,'What the hell? Bet she wont be able to do that again.

Other than that, he always referred to Dr. Iris Ryan as, *IRISH.* He was corrected of this earlier in the movie (she corrected his mispronunciation) yet, he persisted to iritate her until they fell in love at the ending. * Don't astronauts always fall in love in Sc-Fi flicks from the 1950's? - Don't get me started with, *"Journey to the Seventh Planet."*

People always mocked the Bat Spider for being kind of randomly thrown together, but I always thought it's really original for a Mars movie, while still unmistakeably pulpy. Though it doesn't help that the face doesn't move.
Apparently we're supposed to take it that what we see in the film is a distorted memory that Dr Ryan, (biologist and zoologist, no less, so why the screams and fainting at alien life?) is relating under the effects of powerful drugs. It's only the very last few seconds that we hear the Martian's voice and realise -- oh my God! -- it all actually happened! Of course, this is probably a bit of ad hoc reasoning applied when the film came back from the chemist and they realised the 'Cinemagic' process had not been magic enough. ;) Still, it was fun when I watched it in the cinema at the age of 8.

The way dude waves that pistol around with his finger near or on the trigger makes me think Alec Baldwin should do a remake of this classic. Sheesh it’s obvious dude has no firearms training/common sense.

That's one of the things I'm not that fond of about older science fiction movies. Creatures are introduced just so humans can hurt or kill them.

It was a marionette puppet… rear screen projection was used to make it interact with the actors.
