    With all due respect, but the best steering technique is the one that wouldn't let the airbags deploy in the first place.

    • @costin9991

      And at 30 mph You will never need to steer so much that You would have to use hand over hand.does anyone take a 90 degrees corner at 30+mph?! Yeah,that's what i tought. you will never get to use hand over hand at a speed high enough for the airbag to deploy. feeding the wheel is a very slow tehnique and could be fatal.hand over hand is the best method to turn.period

    In terms of “allowing the steering wheel to come back to you” bear in mind, in conditions where it’s icy or slippery the car is most likely going to skid out. In order to prevent this, similarly as we feed the wheel while we turn the car, we also feed the wheel the opposite way to allow the steering wheel to return to it’s correct position.

    This shuffle method does not prevent the driver from reaching across to the other side of the steering wheel and putting the arm in between the airbag and face.
    Professional rally and nascar drivers use hand over hand because it allows for better steering input.
    Nobody can turn the wheel quickly with this odd method.

    • @lucaluke1532
      @lucaluke1532 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +b bb yes i totally agree i think the shuffle steering is dangerous, as the airbag thing remains the same but you cant steer fast in an emergency to bring you back to safety and your steering is always uneven like that.

    This steering technique is highly antiquated and suitable only for steering vehicles without power steering whose steering is very heavy indeed. Hand over hand steering is a lot safer, as it gives you better control over the steering, corrections can be made effectively, lock can be added progressively (needed when misjudging a corner). Also steering hand over hand is a lot faster, which is needed if you want to prevent spinning out when losing control. On the airbag "worry": Your hands will be blown to the sides rather harmlessly, also as someone already mentioned by moving your hand over to pull, you obstruct the Airbag likewise. Btw. driving like this will make you fail on the practical element of the german driving test for improper control of the vehicle.

      Depends where you are in Europe. Different countries use different techniques but I can say from experience...it is so easy to over correct with hand over hand. The UK doesn't really enforce anything but Pull Push is recommended.

    I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DOING THIS. I don't know how people think this is safer and gives you more control of the car. It is very uncomfortable and restricts how far you can turn the wheel and how fast. He also mentions that hand over hand method is dangerous because you have to cross your arm over the airbag but he did it with his shuffle method as well. The best way to avoid injury is to not get in an accident at all... so please, use a method that gives you good control of the car.

    • @MSM4U2POM
      @MSM4U2POM 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, yes and no. Everyone is different, and just because you personally find it uncomfortable and believe it gives you better control, it does not mean everyone does. For what it's worth, to me the hand-over-hand technique looks sloppy and unprofessional, and I have never felt any earthly need to cross hands no matter what the situation. But that's just me. And I cannot for the life of me work out how you arrived at the conclusion that it restricts how far and how fast you can turn the wheel, because it simply does not. That idea exists in your head, and nowhere else.
      Both methods have theoretical advantages and disadvantages, but for all practical intents and purposes that is exactly what they are - theories! Driving is full of folklore, and there is probably more nonsense talked about steering than anything else. Just use whichever suits you, because as long as you steer safely, what does it matter?

  • @Superbustr

    Try going around a 180 degree hill hairpin turn doing the push pull technic... Hand over hand is the way to do it for very tight turns (often at an angle).

  • @s3icc0
    @s3icc0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    frankly I was expecting way more, things like:
    a) proper seating position in order to facilitate reach, vision and safety
    b) basic wheel operation - never pull, always push (if you pull and you loose traction there is a great risk that you will oversteer and when the grip is back it is already too late - yes it is easier tu pull, but ...)
    sort of all what you really need to drive a car properly ... just these two points made my driving much comfortable in terms of certainty in driving. E.g. corner I was able to do 80km/h I can now do in 120km/h....
    and i am not a pro, not even an amateur ... just a guy who enjoys driving

  • @venquessa
    @venquessa 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This is indedeed the best way and relaxed way you can steer i also use this steer technique Greetz from a beginner driver all the other methods are not so good for full steering control exept tis one steering to right with your left hand or steering to left with your right hand your arm get blocked if you do this and you can lose your control because of that reason for full control you need to use the hand that goes to your direction if you go left you have to steer with your left hand if you go right you have to steer with your right hand

    For those who question this method, this training is taught not only by law enforcement officers like myself but also professional race car drivers. So you people who say this is not correct way of steering just tells me you have zero training and do NOT know what your talking about. I have seen too many drivers affected by hand over hand steering, air bag deployment in car collisions result in injuries and over steering and less control of your steering. Like anything else practice makes perfect. check out Tanner Foust
    Pro race car driver and stunt car driver video as well explains push feed steering the same way.

    Good start, but when you start the demo with a rolling vehicle you get a couple of things wrong. Firstly, you never, ever, "allow the steering wheel to come back to you". In fact, you never let go of the wheel (even let it slide), that's the golden rule in steering, the reason is obvious. What you must do is reverse the operation of the hands. Secondly, you should avoid push steering, especially to initiate a turn. You have less force (torque), and so less precision and control doing so, and you risk developing an habit of push-steering when it's not necessary. Keep only that when you need to turn more than what you get with the initial pull-steering. Other than that, it's quite well done.

    While going straight or on slight turns I tend to only use one hand. However, when steering, I tend to use hand-over-hand because it is much easier (in my opinion) for sharp turns. Also, no matter what happens when you get into a crash, you're probably gonna get broken bones anyway, having a broken arm is less major than many other broken bones you could have.

    1, this doesn't work in mid to long distance driving. 2. This only applies to shallow and slow cornering. 3, this doesn't work for manuals. 4. By the time the airbags come out, crossing ur arms is the LEAST of ur troubles

    I'm sorry but this is wrong. The drag and pull technique is horribly inefficient in the case of an emergency, I'm definitely just gunna take my time and drag and pull the wheel instead of overhand. I've had plenty of times where I've needed to overhand to avoid an accident. Also, what if the steering wheel doesn't have an airbag? Just gunna sacrifice speed for irrelevant techniques.

  • @epicquackduck7910
    @epicquackduck7910 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    1:27, looks to me as your arm is crossing the wheel. :/
    I'm just saying, but racing drivers don't use the "shuffle" method because it means they have more control over their vehicle. By shuffling, the turning circle is dramatically increased, whereas by using one turn and not removing your hands from the wheel, you have more control over the car and have a smaller turning circle. Also, if a car suddenly pulls out of a blind corner, and your mid shuffle, your hands aren't on the wheel, so you can't make a turn out of the way. I just thought I would point these obvious flaws in shuffling out. If the main reason you shuffle is because you cover the wheel, even though your arm is clearly covering the wheel, then this just doesn't work.

    0:15 Number fucking 1. Airbags are being activated at speed of 22 km/h or higher. We need to change arms (cross arms) only when we do 180+ degree rotation of the wheel. We do it at low speeds for example somewhere at parking lot. When we turn at parking lot the speed is usually 15 km/h or less. So there's no fucking way of airbag deploying when we cross arms unless you want to do some drift or unless you decided to make a 90-degree turn on a highway just into guardrail

    Heh. If you think the steering wheel is just going to magically come back to you as planned every single time, you're bound for a crash. Also, this isn't 'advanced' anything - this is a part of basic driving training. Hell, I clicked on this thinking I might be able to improve my ability to slide a car around a corner in tricky/OOC conditions. But... Thanks anyway.
    P.S. Have you not heard of/seen the technique of controlling the wheel as it comes back? You basically alternate grips, from right hand to left, etc, as the steering wheel tries to regain a straight line. Am I the only one who does that? Fuck it - it works like a charm for me.

    To those saying this method is dangerous, inefficient and "racing drivers don't use it", you're wrong. Many rally drivers and hill climb drivers use this method. The reason F1 and NASCAR drivers don't need to use this is because of the steering ratios and shape of the wheel (in F1). I've got to admit, in car parks I hand over hand it but on the road I use pull push. Of course, you can spend the rest of your life using hand over hand, no issue to me...but if you really need loads of lock to avoid a situation...well you need to improve as a driver. The only situation this is inefficient is when the driver hasn't perfected it and it is clumsy.

    I dunno why hand over hand get's so much bad rep these days. I drive an old Civic and while I use push pull, It's necessary for me to sometimes switch over to hand over hand. Push pull is not fast enough for 90 degree turns, especially on my car

      +Andrew Wunderlich Yes I know there are some people who recommend push pull and when I came out of driving school I was using that method to steer most of the time. It was just too tiring after a year so I switch to a hybrid of push pull and hand over steering and that's been working out for me. Rally drivers like Sebastien Loeb, Colin Mcrae along with other professional drivers have been using hand over steering so it's not something that's too bad to use.

  • @rotorblade9508
    @rotorblade9508 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    it’s a good technique but it’s definitely not advanced, rally drivers need the most advanced technique. In drifting the car reacts a bit slower and you can let the wheel spin by itself and stop it exactly where you want but in rallying you need more control. Road racing most of the time uses lower turn ratios, especially for very cars

  • @8Markwz
    @8Markwz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    If the airbags are about to open, you should already be turning very fast the steering wheel (to avoid the accident!!!), and this video shows a sluggish, therefore inefficient, way to turn the steering wheel in an emergency situation.

  • @biancofilippo97
    @biancofilippo97 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    So allowing the steering wheel to slide freely is safe and gives you control over the car? Why do people in the states even try to teach how to drive...
