Aw thankyou Aysha! Likewise :)
Makes me proud and happy to see a fellow Ethiopian doing great things. Great job Amina! #Habesha!
+Hanadt Beauty Woooo TeamHabesha! Thank you :)
This video was truly refreshing to see. I talk to people about having a proper Work-Life balance all the time. I love to travel but I MUST get my work done as well.
Just subscribed and I can't wait for more videos! I'm binge watching ❣
My teenage daughter and I love this vlog. We are geek hijabi's and love, love, love all that it entails!
This is literally my life, had I decided to stay in cancer genetics research and pursue my PhD. But after a few wasted yet valuable years, I knew it wasn't my calling. Nurse practitioner is my second career now and I love it! Please continue vlogging, it's honestly so inspiring to see East African sisters in science, especially research!! Would've been nice to see a familiar face many moons ago 😊
+Aisha N I totally agree! Research isn't for everyone, there are so many advantages but also so many disadvantages. It's much better to do something you love more! Thank you, I do hope that I can inspire others to take a similar route :)
MashaAllah, this video was very inspiring. I'm currently a life science student and it was really cool seeing this video & I'm sure it will really help young girls. Best of luck with your PhD sis, love your channel :)
Love your nerdiness! A true inspiration sis :)
+art1over Thank youuu
yes mashallah ^^
Love how your into your studies and being creative! Please keep it up.
+farah092 Thank you :) It's so frustrating watching TH-cam and seeing the lack of PoC pushing for academia. Hopefully my channel will bring something different to the table.
I'm so happy you made a youtube! A fellow east african in the STEM field that also vlogs is just what I needed!Thank you for sharing your lab with us Amina. I would love to know more about the two proteins you work with and the long term goals you have with them. I also would love if you shared with us tips on how to get into graduate schools and how you chose your area of study? Also what made you interested in research? hahaha sorry for all these questions but this is so exciting! I am currently studying Cellular and Molecular Biology in an American university with the long term goal of Medical School and it's so rare for me to see people who look like me in these fields.
I'm such a fan of your vlogs - and getting to see this side of you makes me more of a fan! You go girl! 💛 Keep us in the loop of your PH.D. journey, looking forward to more vlogs.
+Nimo Mohamed Haha I can't hide this side! Thank you, will do for sure
Loved this! It makes us get an insight into your life, which is quite interesting. My best friend lives in Japan and she's working in a lab doing research on a particular part of the spinal cord. Keep it up dear!
+Zee Dhubow Ah wow, Japan is an amazing place for Biological research - they are extremely advanced there! The spinal cord (and nervous system as a whole) is such a fascinating system. Thank you :)
Love this vlog! Wish you could show us more of the lab. You are a great role model and your blog is amazing!
I'll keep trying to show more :) Thankyou!
I enjoyed watching this so much! I especially enjoyed the lab tour and it's just so cool seeing you immersed in your field of expertise - such an intelligent lady mashallah! Lots of love xxxx
+Hanna Yusuf Awww thank you, love you Hanna
Mashallah tabarakallah 😍 everything u do is so inspirational for the youth. Keep it up sister
Philosophy is beautiful! It gets rid of all the garbage & gets to the point. If you ever do get serious with it, it'll challenge all your held beliefs, morals & values. From your mere existence, to what course you'll take in life, your culture, political stance, your religiosity, your relationships with close friends/family & others, your world view & the change you want to see in it etc etc.. The list could be endless i reckon haha..
Just thought i'd give you a heads up because if you're too deep into it, there's no turning back or else it'll be too much to bare on your conscious & trying to forget all about it will prove difficult. At Least that was the situation in my case. lol that's enough from me...
Wish you a enlightened journey ahead!! :)
+Yusuf Omar (Zopdoz) I agree! I took a mini-break this week just to stop myself overthinking every situation! But yes, it's good to see the world in a new light and widen the breadth of your knowledge. Thanks for the kind words :)
Ahhhh I'm an 18 yr old and I really hope to study microbiology next term at uni. It's so inspiring and reassuring to see a fellow somali girl (named Amina aswell lol) doing science toooo asdfghjkl MashAllah! Hope everything goes well abayo ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
opps I just saw that you're Ethiopian, it doesn't matter tho I'm still equally as inspired 😭❤️❤️

Really enjoyed this video being a scientist myself, what do you study?
+Muna Farah I did BioChem for my Undergrad and now I'm more focused onto Cell and Developmental Biology with some Physics aspects.
tour de lab! nice one!
+Diamonds In Dirt Oui :) Thanks!
Hey, I'm currently torn between going into research i.e PhD or going for graduate entry medicine. Could you please give me some insight on what it's like doing a PhD and the benefits of it? Thanks.
+Unknown Vampire Hey! That's a great question, there's a LOT of things to consider before making a decision. I'll just try to list a few here that come to the top of my mind:
(1) Time: PhD is 3 years, Med is 4 yrs + 2 yrs training - so it really depends on how old you are and how long you want to stay in education for.
(2) Career: With a PhD you can literally go into anything from academia to banking to teaching, Medicine obviously leads to practicing Medicine but you are still open to other options too. As a Medical Dr you will be better paid than staying in academia after a PhD but if you went into another field after a PhD then you could be paid more. It really depends on what you end up doing afterwards.
(3) Finance: You get paid/funded to study a PhD for all three/four years and you get money to travel to conferences and seminars all over the world, which is really fun and exciting. With Medicine, you'd have to get student finance or obviously pay for yourself in other ways. This really depends on your personal finances.
(4) Applications: Generally, with a PhD you apply to a specific lab/supervisor and you will be interviewed and then you are in or not - it is extremely competitive. With Medicine, as you may know, you need UKCat etc, again this is fiercely competitive.
(5) Environment: A PhD can get lonely depending on what lab you end up in, but if it is a small lab then you will end up working alone a lot. Luckily, my lab has about 8 people and so I'm always surrounded by people. With Medicine, you have lots of other students in your lectures and working as a medical Dr requires lots of interaction with people.
I can only tell you from my experience of a PhD - I'm in my final year and I've really enjoyed it! It is stressful at times, and you may need to come in during weekends and stay longer hours (but there is no 'easy' job anyway). I'm in a really friendly lab and every day is a new day with new challenges and it is very exciting and you really don't know what you will expect when you come in that day. You also need to be very patient and willing to fail at some things, but then you just continue and you will succeed eventually.
Hope this cleared things up a bit! Both courses are very different and if I were you, I would think very hard about whether you LOVE medicine enough, as being a medical Dr is no joke. Also, you have to think about how much you LOVE research, because again, you will be studying a tiny aspect of science for three years, and if you hate it, then it will not be a pleasant experience.
:)
+I Am In A Place thank you for you response, that was very helpful. I just wanted to ask if you did a masters before going into PhD, or did you do a BSc - PhD direct route?
This was so inspirational it made me actually want to go back and kill my neuroanatomy subject! Not go onto beauty websites and procrastinate.
Btw your so cute!
+shanaz jamal Aw Thank youuu Shanaz! Haha i'm glad I can do that :) InshaAllah i'll be back in Australia soon! x
In Shaa Allah love
Cool!!!!
love you 💚
great video sis keep it up
+rushda ameen Thank you!
Love this video... how can i get work experience in the lab... any recommendations will be amazing.. i study biomed
+nikita anderson Thank you! There are a few ways. You could search online for anyone who is offering internships or summer placements in the lab. Or you could e-mail directly to lecturers who have labs and see if they will take you on. There are also usually some studentships where you can get paid for spending 6-8 weeks in a lab. Hope this helps :)
I second the above comment. Some universities also have a job listings site where they may place open positions. But you're best bet is to look into the department you are interested and emailing the faculty directly. If they aren't hiring, you can also ask if they have recommendation for anyone you can email. Good luck!!
thank you.. and will do
wooow so intresting , i'm a medical student but intrested in research, thanks for showing your lab. We were talking about the whole mind-brain problem in class, really makes you think😅😆
+Umalkhayr Elmi That's amazing! Good luck with your medical studies. Yes, it really is a crazy concept that the mind can control the body. I guess that's how placebo medication manifests itself.
Is that a job for you?Do you get paid?Or would you go on to be a professor?Sorry for the intrusive question 😊
No it's okay! I want others to know what it's like. Yes, I am funded so I get paid but it is tax free. And yes, I can go on to professorship afterwards if I wish.
Are you Somali or Ethiopian sis? just curious tho! Very inspiring Masha Allah.
+Maryam Jama Thank you for the kind words! I addressed what I am in this video :)
I Am In A Place Oh, my bad I didn't finished. :)

Amazing channel, btw where did you get your scarf from? :)
I got it from Australia!
how you feeling about the exams coming in May LOL
No exams luckily! Just a thesis :)
Woooop a fellow scientist, I'm assuming you're doing molecular?
+Belle Michelle Wooo! Yes and no, I do molecular and cellular with some physics! What about you??
12:14 😂🫰❤🫶
What do you study?
+Maryam Ali An amalgamation of biology, biophysics and biochemistry :)
+I Am In A Place oh wooow it's sounds so fascinating! Also thanks for uploading this video. It really kept me motivated whilst revising .
+Maryam Ali keep studying hard!! Good luck :)
how old are you?
+Curly Hair Don't Care I'm 24!
really?!?! you look really young. I would have thought you were around 18 to 20 years old.
+Curly Hair Don't Care haha well I have a baby face. I also don't wear makeup, and thar usually ages people a lot!
+I Am In A Place very true actually!! many celebs look older than they are because of make-up.
+Curly Hair Don't Care Exactly! So many 16 year olds look like they're in their late 20s these days. It's not a good look.
Hi sis are you a lapp tech,
+Guleid Dayib Watch the video to find out :)
+Sabrina A Aw thank you for this comment, really made me smile! This is the exact reason why I decided to start TH-cam, because I was frustrated with the lack of representation of East African woman who are in the field of Science/ STEM. I go to conferences with hundreds of people and I am the only person of colour! It's so sad.
Wow, you're doing an amazing thing, keep it up and yes, for sure, I will be doing lots more videos about my field and how to get in!
