I never caught the banter about feeling like she’d seen things before. I liked Sera but never romanced or invested in her heavily. That said, I think the explanation may be a lot simpler than we realize. She’s leaning on the fourth wall, not breaking it entirely, but on some level she was written to be aware of her situation in the game. I won’t say that explains everything, but it seems an appropriate explanation for her deja vu moments.
You know, that was something I thought of when I heard her speech at the proposal scene. Something about it felt like it broke the fourth wall a bit. I think this has become the only ‘Sera is Special’ outcome I respect, haha.
I felt that she was either a spirit like cole like a shared spirit of hope or faith of the commoners or some kind of modern coming of the ancient elves.
I think she likes Qunari so much because of their dragon blood. Obviously she doesn't do it consciously but that reinforces her character. Also the Dwarf love is from the fact that they can't use magic.
I'll always love the moment when Sera begs the Inquisitor to stop hurting when the mark is killing them near the end of Trespasser, you could really feel how afraid she was that she might have had to watch us suffer and die. I might not have liked Sera all that much in the beginning or care for everything she says and does but that Jenny has got a friend in me.
What really got me with Sera’s dialogue is after Adamant, if Stroud died she’d be like: “lost a serious mustache there” and I dunno how many times I’ve heard it but it still makes me giggle. 😂😂
@@GenshinLover283 And the fact that she often fears being called stupid and that she knows she doesn't understand most things -- that's what, just a cute little quirk? She knows that she's not smart. She realizes that her narrow view of things is for convenience and safety since she doesn't have to move too far away from things like Andraste and the Maker in order to pretend she's anything but an elf. Most people would look in a mirror and be able to see what they are. Well, maybe not these days so much. We seem to be having just this sort of crisis these days when people are filled with self-doubt and self-loathing and are grasping at anything that might give them some small measure of comfort, even if it is delusional and false. Sera fits that bill perfectly and responds just as you'd expect when challenged.
Sera is one of the most IMPORTANT voices in Dragon Age Inquisition because she and Bull seem to be the only ones insisting you look at the individuals under your power rather than seeing them as little more than expendable cannon fodder. And even then, Bull still has some concept of The Greater Good that was drilled into him by the Qun. Whereas Sera has perspective of only what affects her, which may sound small minded to some, but really is important when it comes to leaders making decisions and treating individual deaths as "losses" and "attacks on their group" rather than as personal tragedies. I agree with her very little about her opinions on magic, but her opinions on people are spot on. I love Sera dearly, even if we don't agree. She makes you remember that there are people who you need to care about, while she learns from you the value of a well managed organisation to affect better change.
@@alnotbiggaytho7124 as a man who loves stories, and who knows how to deal with groups of people, Varric still has the same big picture thinking that the others have. He can still see people die and feel bad about it, but see it as a necessary evil in service to the greater good (unless it's people he loves, like Hawke). Whereas for Sera, she doesn't have to love someone for her to know people dying for a cause is unacceptable, and when it happens, you cannot be allowed to forget it. You have to face it as a harsh reality that cannot be swept aside for loftier ideals, or accepted as a "consequence". She values individual lives more than any other character in the game, because she values what's real more than what's a story. Varric is my favourite character in the entire game but Sera still provides what Varric doesn't.
Except that's exactly how Iron Bull sees things. He doesn't see people. He sees objects that need to be eradicated and removed. Cole sees this often in the party banter. And there is often a duplicity and contradiction in Bull that Cole observes. Like going along with Krem's choice to live life as a man when it's very clear that Bull definitely knows that she's a woman. When Bull asks Cole what number he is thinking of, for some reason his thoughts go back to the very moment, that fight in the tavern when the guards were trying to kill Krem. They had torn at her clothes and one of them swung a mace at Krem but Bull got in the way and lost his eye. When Bull looked down, he saw a woman lying on the ground, her clothes were all torn and it was very clear that it was a woman. Not a man simply because that's how Krem saw herself. And yet late on when Bull hired Krem as one of the Chargers, he goes out of his way to tell Krem that he IS a man just because he views himself that way. Stuff a sock down the pants and bind the breasts tightly and voila! You're a man! Yeah, okay. Sera's doing the same thing. She looks in a mirror and doesn't see an elf because it is the one thing she despises most about herself. Simply wishing it away or denying that it exists and is what she truly is doesn't make it disappear or suddenly become untrue. But for Sera, this is the case. She's not an elf and this allows her to reject all things that are too "elfy" and suddenly she can be happy again. All of the old elves were just demons which makes them all so much more easier to reject and she embraces Andraste and the Maker and this is meant to bring her comfort and safety. But even that doesn't help when she stops to question any of it or it is challenged in any way. She goes into a panic and demands that the Inquisitor reassure her that it's true and all the rest is just lies so she can continue with her delusions. Bull however burned himself out in the Seheron. He forced himself to kill so much, conditioned himself to see nothing but objects instead of people to make it easier to sleep at night, that he could barely move or do anything. He submitted himself for reeducation in order to once again feel nothing and see objects instead of people. His duplicity comes from his expertise in lying, both to himself and everyone around him. He lies about his feelings, about romance, about flirtation, about domination, about conquering sex partners, about everything. And if his personal quest is avoided or somehow missed, or if is it tackled but the Chargers are sacrificed, he remains loyal to the Qun because that's all he has left. He despises the very thought of becoming Tal'Vashoth. He loves his boys and won't forgive their sacrifice in the quest. But if they are saved and he disappoints the Qun and becomes Tal'Vashoth, he can still betray you if you don't reinforce the idea that "Hissrad" is dead and gone and he's now officially and forever "The Iron Bull". Then you have his complete loyalty. But if you fail to do that bit then he'll still turn on you because he has nothing to hold on to but being "Hissrad" despite having voiced his concerns about the whole alliance with the Qun at the start of that quest. What we have in DA Inquisition are a lot of very flawed and messed up characters. All of them have major flaws and issues. Many suffer from poor self-esteem or self-hatred. Nearly all are filled with regret from things they'd done in their past or had done to themselves. Most don't really have a clue about what they're doing or what they want or how to go about getting any of it. Pretty much how life is generally for most people.
I felt that she was either a spirit like cole like a shared spirit of hope or faith of the commoners or some kind of modern coming of the ancient elves.
There’s a conversation Dorian has with her about how normal people can’t use potions the ways he does (in reference to her specialty as a temptress) he explicitly states that only mages are able to wear fire like her but gives up arguing since Sera doesn’t want to hear it. And when she’s taken to The Frostbacks and you’re discussing burial rights with hunt master Sera comments about how it’s just like the Dalish but refuses to explain what she means. So I think this is entirely a possible, maybe like Minave spell casting isn’t easy but alchemy with elements is.
"I know of the spirit, trapped, unknowing, in your heart". How's that? I know how it is, to be as at one with something you don't understand. Like magic.
Idk how I feel about Sera being something more elf-y than she would like, but it's worth noting that Sera talks about the anchor with the almost EXACT language as Cole. She just does it in a less poetic manner, but one of the first things she says is "you glow" which no one other than solas or cole comment on the anchor being visible.
Some of Sera's behavior kind of makes me think of Kieran when he has the soul of an old god, what with the weird way she talks sometimes and how she seems to be able to sense things beyond herself. I wouldn't say she has an old god's soul in her too, but maybe she has a fade spirit of some kind for a soul. Or maybe the devs just wanted her to be weird. Maybe we'll find out some day.
I think you are right! In the description of the shattered library it says when the veil was made it shattered everything, people yelled out that the floor was gone. Which would explain her weird banter about falling and could explain why magic terrifies her, because it caused a terrifying fall to her death
@@adriannahwillenborg1186 this just confirms my headcannon about the theory of her being Andruil's vessel or a remnant of her-Solas says "She is........apart from herself" which would make sense......damn it Bioware
Or it could just be that very elven thing she tries so hard to bury and deny in herself. Solas isn't wrong that it's there inside her but she just refuses to acknowledge it in any way. So when tiny bits of things that you wouldn't expect her to be aware of or know pop up, it really isn't all that surprising since no matter how she sees herself, she is an elf after all. It's in her blood. I very much doubt the old god theory that's making the rounds on TH-cam. It's fanciful and all that but I don't think it answers a lot of other questions that generally get overlooked.
I like Sera, really- yes I’ll be judged and loathed for saying this. I find her to be interesting, funny, endearing, and if you take a second to listen to her what she says has certain wisdom. Yes she’s still abrasive, immature, and even petty- however I believe her viewpoints to be valid in some respects.
Well, you're still in a better position than me. I get a lot of shit every time I mention my distaste for Alistair, and the fact that he got to stay in my party only once out of like 15 runs. He always ends up either dead or exiled lol
@@violetraven8323 The real issue with Alistair, at least for me, is that the first time I played DAO as I got to Lothering I looked at him asking for a direction. He was the elder warden after all. Instead he says "you're the boss", when the Hero of Ferelden was a warden for just a couple of weeks. Alistair running from his responsibilities always got to my nerves, and he's always passive throughout the entire game frankly. It always felt like Alistair failed me and the wardens honestly
I never romanced Sera, I didn’t realize how sweet it is in a relationship! She’s so thoughtful 🥹 She really grew on me. I didn’t like her much at first but now she’s one of my favorite companions 😊
I heard a theory once that Sera's oddities have something to do with the small painted box because the First Enchanter must have kept it secure for a reason. This is the theory that I like best because I'm also really annoyed at the idea of her being associated with ancient elves but the oddities are too numerous to just discount.
I felt that she was either a spirit like cole like a shared spirit of hope or faith of the commoners or some kind of modern coming of the ancient elves.
I felt that she was either a spirit like cole like a shared spirit of hope or faith of the commoners or some kind of modern coming of the ancient elves.
So- a story. My last playthrough I romanced Solas. And we all know, that's a super dark and sad romance, and I cried a lot. But, after that, I made a dwarf rogue inky, a tomboy and Carta smuggler. My dwarf, Mal, was deciding who to romance, and gave Josephine up for Sera. So, she actually was the perfect romance after Solas, after all the angst, and she just made me smile and brought my mood up from Solas.
Weird idea for a theory I got at the end of the episode: So, Sera doesnt havent any crazy magical abilities, it's just that shes so weird that spirits are attracted to her as she dreams, so when she wakes up so only has vestigial memories from the dreams, but the memories are still there. That's why Cole and Solas are so interested in her, because she has something that makes her irresistible to spirits (probably the way she talks). So, the spirits might talk to her while shes sleeping, so she have memories and knowledge of things she shouldn't while not actually being all the weird. Woah. that was a long thing, and I think i just kept repeating the same sentiment over and over, but yeah.
They could also be interested in her because she's so blatantly opposed to what she physically and racially is by refusing to accept anything elven about herself. It's a curious thing to behold and would have most rational people questioning it. It's fascinating and bewildering to witness such a creature as Sera. Even Dorian is taken with trying to figure her out. Most times though he just gives up and accepts her as a drinking partner which is par for the course since they both have esteem issues, self-loathing and are self-destructive to an extent. Kindred spirits, so to speak.
Just here to say I love Sera. I think she's a lot smarter and kinder than she lets on. Hard to romance because she has eyes on the back of her head and self respect. Love her.
I feel like Sera is a mage but represses it heavily for one reason to another and Solas noticed it immediately. It's possible Sera may be an insanely powerful mage like Solas and Flemeth
I wonder if the translation of what Solas says to Sera could also mean something like "I realize I trapped your spirit with my song something something heart" and his song meaning, the Veil he brought up. Sera's weird memory loss and mind issues could imply she is actually another Evanuri - like Mythal - that wasn't pushed into the Fade (possibly because there wasn't much of her to push behind the Fade, like Mythal who was only a wisp at the time) and I like to point to Andruil, the Goddess of the Hunt. Andruil's choice of weapon is the bow, she had a relationship with a woman already (lesbian, bi maybe - since she wanted Solas to serve her in her bed...whatever that meant) and eventually Andruil went mad until Mythal sapped her strength (like Solas did with Mythal later) and stole Andruil's knowledge of how to find the Void (maybe took a little too much or that memory theft combined with the loss of power made her forget more and more over the centuries). I'm not saying Sera never dies, I am wondering if Andruil's spirit hops to different bodies or keeps reincarnating, unable to enter the Fade. Another hint toward that is Solas - who so strongly separates himself from the other elves, not considering them his people - tells Sera "We are not so far apart, you and I" Because she was an Evanuri? Because she is powerless from Mythal taking her strength and Solas is still collecting his? Or because she is partly from a different time period, lost in the current time?
PERFECT AS ALWAYS i still think sera is ether possessed by tranquil anduril or maybe some spirit like anders or she maybe like Cole or a suppressed mage but something is off with her i like her
Here is how I interpreted the documents at 4:07. Notice of seizure: Lady Emmald died=seizure of property Authority to seize: the property was to be used for the Grey Wardens to help with the Blight; however, they couldn't find the documents so this was enacted by an Arl (Arl of Denerim?) Addendum postseizure: The estate was in shambles for multiple reasons (elements, animal infestation, and eventually the Blight). Before the Blight, they tried to restore the manor by selling goods, trade contracts, and miscellaneous structural elements (whatever that means) to fund the effort. When the Blight came it struck down the price on the property immensely.
It's a fairly simple and straightforward legal document. The first part just describes the property to be seized. They then cite the legal justification for said seizure, i.e. "we will need this to fulfill our treaty obligations with the Grey Wardens." Since this treaty has not been presented, the authority for the seizure comes from the Arl and not the Wardens themselves. The addendum describes the things they actually wound up seizing and their determination that the manor itself is not usable for war purposes. They then provide for a reduction in the taxable value of the Emmald estate (taxes are probably levied based on property value).
For my head-canon, and until the game proves otherwise, Sera is in some way being influenced by, or is, Andruil. From the Dragon Age wiki: "Andruil the Huntress, also known as the Lady of Fortune, is the Elven goddess of {the} hunt. To the Dalish, she represents their very survival". If you recall when we first get to Skyhold Sera talks about asking Andraste what she stepped in, also says she can't wait to get back to making money. Here's the thing, when she does that the camera pans in close to her face and she looks away from the inquisitor. Classic theater acting "aside" to hint at something more going on there. I think that's a nod to the fortune part. She does that a bunch of times and it's all subtle nods to things she shouldn't really have knowledge of. Our companions make comments about Sera's uncanny bow skills, Cole's comments about how she already knows where the arrow will land and doesn't need to watch it, but somehow can still see it, just confirms it for me. She's got a piece of or is Andruil, the Huntress. Solas I think sees it too... she's as far from what she's meant to be as possible. I don't think he meant her being Elven but not wanting to be Elven, that's too obvious for Solas. I think he recognizes her 'divinity' for lack of a better word. She knows something isn't right about her too, thinking makes her head hurt and so on, and I bet her dislike of all things Elven is partly the uneasy feeling she gets when her Andruil side stirs. She hates it. Regardless, I think Sera is one of the best characters in a Bioware game. So easy to write her off for being immature and crass, but if you don't and stick with her, she's got so much depth.
I also think Andruil was lesbian or maybe bi-sexual? but on the wiki info about her it mentions that, Ghilan'nain was her chosen and or beloved which could also be why Sera is lesbian. So think that adds a bit more ammo that Sera could be a reincarnated, Andruil or somehow channels her? or as you mentioned is somehow influenced by her.
Also: armour of the void and Sera's afraid of 'nothingness'. All else can be quirks, but her seeing nothing at all in the nightmare is more than peculiar.
Small painted box on First Enchanter Irving's desk. What's inside the box? My theory is that he keeps Spirit of Valour inside the box, for the Harrowing's. That's what was delivered to a house in Denerim. ... Probably not.
The dialogue is what makes me think sera has to be something different. Like maybe an ancient elf or the child of an ancient elf. There has to be a reason that her ears point to the fade and solas takes such interest in her.
She's the only rogue I ever have in my party when I play Dragon Age. No hate to Varric or Cole, I just really love Sera. Even if she doesn't always get along with my "elfy" Inquisitor.
I always having Varric on my team, mostly because I also have the bull and these two are gold together :D add a little sass with dorian and it's perfect. Tbh I have Sera almost never with me which is kind of tragic but I just stuck with Varric and sometimes with Cole because with him in the party you get nice insights and backgroundinformations from other partymembers. I'm almost through my current playthrough but in my next one I'm definitely taking partymembers with me I've neglected in this
A lot of her banter with Solas seems less like he's saying she's an ancient elf or something and more that he's trying to reach some sort of instinctive part of her heritage. Statements about her being the farthest thing from what she should be could easily mean that she's literally as opposite an elf as Solas could imagine. Maybe it's Solas trying to reach her in the hopes that if someone as distant from her ancestors as Sera could be made to connect to herself than no current elf is beyond hope. She's essentially a control group for his plan to rebuild the Elven empire. The elvish could be a less literal statement meaning "I know in my soul your heart is with our people", meaning that Solas feels that part of her is still connected with the elves deep down. The stuff with Cole meanwhile is less about her having a spiritual nature and instead is a hint that she's some sort of savant when it comes to touching the fade. The fade response to emotions and impulse and Sera is basically pure emotion and impulse. To the point that she's basically a walking id. While she has limits and morality she seems to act on pure emotion. In effect, she's basically the opposite of a Tranquil, without also being a mage. That's why she seems to see things before they happen or turns her ears to the fade. Since time in the fade means nothing, to the point that time travel is possible on some level. Sera simply gets flashes of feelings that she's redoing things.
I loved Sera on my last playthrough. It was the first time I put time into befriending her. My Inquisitor at the start was quite dour and stern, and having a light hearted joker as his best friend was a great foil, and made his arc so meaningful. He dissolved the inquisition and is using the Jennies infrastructure to Co ordinate against Solas. Really neat way to end an arc.
Sera was my favorite character in the game since I was a dude I couldn’t romance her but she still was able to develop a close friendship and become my character’s best friend.
Sera has been one of my favorite characters since my first play through of this game. I romanced her first and I’ve always been a little irritated at people being like ‘oh she’s so irritating’ like they’ve never been friends with someone who’s not neurotypical. I’ve always hc that she is possibly a repressed mage or some kind of spirit attached person. The way she talks is too close to cole and because of the way she was raised she may never be able to love that part of herself. If she is attached to an old evanuris that would make some sense but I find it just as likely she might be something like hope or even a different than anders sort of justice. She cares so much about people and that is such an important thing that in the real world people in power don’t understand, so I could never bring myself to play as an inquisitor without her approval. Caring about little people is important. I could go on for ages about Sera and all the reasons I love her but this is a TH-cam comment so I’ll shove it for now lol.
Sometimes when I’m on a dragon age kick on TH-cam but don’t feel like listening to a full character profile I’ll still load this one up just for the intro you edited. Makes me grin like a doofus every time
Possibly because of all the companions, Sera is the only one, other than himself, who absolutely despises the Dalish so that makes them kindred spirits. But I somehow very much doubt that Fen'Harel would summon Sera to come join him and all the other elves for the grand Veil removal.
@@bradtorville5526 he absolutely wouldn't, but I think she is actually the lady for the skies or tyddra bright axe that died and had the special avarr sky bruise where they get givej the opportunity to reincarnate and lose all memory of past life
Theory: Sera is tall because she is an ancient elf that was forced to sleep like Solas at a very younge age. Because she didn't want to sleep she woke up early and obviously had no parents around to claim her because of this. She fears magic so much because she is secretly a dreamer who was constantly harassed by the demons she feared. After seeing a mage get mobbed and others being taken to the circle, she decided to hid her magic abilities by picking up a bow and posing as a Rougue. She is a tempest because it allows her to hide her magic when she slips up while guiding her arrows. And her ears point towards the fade because they are searching the magic that once use to cover thedas so she can stop hiding from the world
Of all the things you can about Sera, there are five things that come to mind: She isn't always an agreeable girl, she's a rogue, and a thief ,and she'll tempt your fate and lastly, she's most certainly unique. Sera is interesting in that she always talks but almost never says anything. I think a lot of her mystery comes from her not wanting to remember her past
I found her so irritating on my first playthrough but now every time I replay the game, I want to romance her again because she's so damn lovable :) She's such a slow burn character, I love it. Maybe that's just me.
I once met IRL a girl with almost the exact personality as Sera, turned down a notch just a little bit. She was one of the best things that has happened in my life over the brief period we shared. I now try to bring her joy and carefree attitude myself as much as possible, even if we don't contact each a other a lot anymore.
In my canon, Sera is actually Amethyne from DAO. My Cousland adopted her and Sera twists some of the details she gives to the inquisition to keep her relationship a secret
I think she's Amethyne, too. My headcanon is way different (and a bit complicated), but it does involve a Cousland (and guest) that couldn't find her. So she did become Sera with Lady Emmald, etc.
Since the elven people predate the veil ... maybe all elves have souls/spirits that are a lot more like the Fade Spirits than other races? Could that be what makes Sera a little odd (other than her giddy oddness I mean)? Maybe she's simply got an old soul and would rather not question it.
I think that Sera has or had been someone who died when the veil was created. In the shattered library it is stated that people yelled the floors were gone and they just fell. Falling. That could be what her banter means and would make sense as to why she mightve seen things before. Its become obvious in the games that spirits can latch into others or be remade but dont always remember. So she could easily been someone who suffered when the veil created, ending up falling into an endless void to her death
About the quote: "Ar Dirthan' as ir elgara, ma sula e'var vhenan " The second part I understand as: my joy is our heart/my joy is our love - but, since you pointed out that Elgar and Elgara are so close, I would like to point out that vhenan and elvhenan too are rather close. Following that, we could conceivably come up with translationgs like "(I) sing of the place of our people" or even "my joy are our people". Also I wondered wether the elven language really uses the same grammatical structure as english. In lots of languages, the antecedent (not a ative speaker, had to look that one up, hope I got it right) has a different place. Translating the first part very loosly with I, to learn/Knowledge, something (probably a sort of preposition), (I) am, and spirit, we could also translate this with: "I am a spirit of Knowledge/Wisdom" (note that the words for Wisdom and Spirit switched place here, which like I said isn't uncommon in varying languages - think french: riviere rouge = river (of) red = red river). All of this is based entirely on knowing who Solas turns out to be of course and kind of retroactively fitting this translation to that, so I'm not convinced myself, but still I wanted to put it out here for debate.
I'm not sure what we might learn of her in the future. But it feels like the dev's wanted Sera to be a kind of "in between" of mages and normal people. Like she had abilities, even if she was unaware of them. Like how she's a good shot despite little real training, and how she notices things( i.e. looking past the breach). But she suppresses whatever powers she would've had because she is afraid of magicy stuff.
I at one point used to loathe Sera and then I invested some time and became her friend. Now she is decidedly one of my favourite characters. When I came across her pages in World of Thedas Volume 2 I was shocked by the fact that Emmald, made Sera for a time the wealthiest Elf in Ferelden. Of course, Sera being Sera gave it away to the chantry or assumedly the Ferelden Crown. As there are some other notes/letters referring to the bequeathed. Is difficult to get a hold of for approval concerning some holdings/property. I'll assume at the time that Sera was already trying to get away from Ferelden after the blight. And Thought to herself that she didn't have to worry about all that stuff. Since she pushed it over onto "others"to deal with.
I just enjoy her banter with Solas She may prank him and he wouldn't be mad at this Yeah, she definately is not very 'elfy elf' and may be rude at times but harmles and joking asking-and-answering questions though finds them 'creepy' Perhaps these things (Fade, magic, elven stuff) make her head hurt because she was once connected to it somehow? but like lost her memory? and those deja vu's........... Sera being Sera is precious (lost sense in the middle, sorry)
I think sera is just weird. You know how some people have dreams of the future that come true, I think it’s just that. She just sometimes predicts the future, not magic like mages have maybe a bit more connected to the fade maybe a bit more magic in her blood than she’d like but in the end she’s just weird.
Sera is my second favorite character in the entire series only to Lelliana, and I agree that much like the red-head tempest, there's far more to her than at first blush. She mastered the bow the first time she picked one up (at least the art department gave her the shoulders and back for it, kudos), and seems to have preternatural foresight. She was my inquisitor's snarky best friend and confidant, accompanying just about every single mission. I adore her. I hope BioWare does the 4th game well, but given their recent track record and EA's ethical standards resting somewhere around Earth's mantle, I'm not going to hold out much hope of finding anything new about her.
Its believed that grand enchanter fiona is his mother because if you read the calling, his father king maric and fiona have a child. Though he doesn't know fiona is his mother and was told it was a human serving woman from Redcliffe.
Alistair is half elf! As others have said, Fiona is his mother, per the calling. You can hear me rant about that in the last episode of The Calling review or the Alistair video, haha.
...Cassandra doesn't seem to have a low opinion of her, especially not when compared to Vivienne (actually it’s even debatable with Vivienne who seems more bemused at Sera trying to antagonize her) or Solas? I'm really not sure where you're getting this from, especially since she gives Cass the same offer she gives Leliana when she's Divine............. Also surprised you didn't mention her friendship with Dorian.
Two examples: When you ask Cassandra for advice as inquisitor; one of the things she says is no to trust Sera near the Treasury. Also when you ask her about ideas for a gift, she gives a very condescending answer.
MonarchMKUltra that’s what I based saying that off of. While two snide comments might not be much- it’s some of the harshest things she says to a companion- although some might compare it to her banter to Blackwall after he reveals who he is. She’s wary of Cole and Dorian too, but even then she seems more respectful of them. Sera is just a petty thief who needs a real job, as she says.
Ghil Dirthalen that still seems to be pretty... tame? And honestly she has much stronger reactions to Dorian and Cole and yet their banter later establishes them as friends later on. She’s bemused by Sera at the absolute worst imo. And again, they clearly get along decently enough that Sera gives her an offer she doesn’t give Vivienne. I should say I generally did like the video a lot. I just... have a hard time seeing Cassandra as really disliking her.
I think throughout most of the game Cassandra dislikes Sera. Not sure about later on but it seems most of the companions gain some sort of respect at the very least for each other despite their differences. I mean, they did fight together. As for Sera offering Cass the same protection as Leliana, it seemed to me that Sera respected Cassandra from the beginning. That doesn't necessarily have to be mutual.
When Solas... a elven God says he and Sera aren't that different, she's more than a random Elf raised by humans. Beehive in the Dummy, knowing in advance where to aim... not saying a God but she isn't normal
I love giving her daggers and make her fight in the front 👌 I find her battle screams amusing.. If only she didn't slightly dissapprove everything I do, she'd be in 3rd place for best companion after Dorian and Varric, but she stays 4th, after Cassandra
It took me awhile to like Sera, but once I decided to romance her, oh my god I had the most fun with her. It’s like a first relationship. It’s innocent, carefree, and fun. And her banter with other followers is funny. I love Sera a lot
That bit where she is more or less talking about having a déjà-vu ......makes me wonder if she maybe somehow notices this in fact really has been happening before - as in us playing this before. Might be a forth wall breaky-thing °___° Uh, don't mind me, I somehow escaped out of the Undertale-Fandom-Trashcan and ended up in the one from Dragon Age instead. I kinda like the idea though :3
I think Sara is a very human elf. Simple as, perhaps some sort of latent or repressed magic but just a very human elf, OR the opposite, a very elf-like elf, barely what an elf was meant to be when they take form kind of like a throwback. that would explain Solas's interest and her strange connection to the fade. without blatant magic. But that is just my opinion or maybie has the potential for being an elf god.
For me I think the general idea behind Sera was for her to be everything Solas saw himself as, but wasn't. A kind of a mirror image and refutation of his mission statement. Solas claims to want freedom for his people, but he's unwilling to accept the consequences of freedom and intends to replace it with what came before, only this time under his "benevolent" direction. Sera on the other hand revels in that freedom he sees as antithetical to what being Elven means, and helps people without seeking to control them. She's an arrow in flight, all trajectory and no target while he's all about the target and everything is just a means to that end. @18:15 Could it be possible that ('as) as a short form suffix could denote that the subject is a location? For example "Vhen'alas" seems to literally mean "(our/the people's) land". The "Vhen" part seems to refer to "(our/the people's)" since it is a component in "Vhenadahl" (tree of the people), "Vhenallin" (friend of the people). So "Dirthan'as" could mean something closer to "land/place of secrets/place of knowledge" or something to that effect. Also, since elven seems to be poetic at least as often as it's literal this might not refer to an actual place, but a mindset or a figurative place. Like if one were to say "the world of academia" or more appropriate for Solas: "the world of espionage and intrigue". In context meaning pretty much: "I know what I'm talking about", or perhaps akin to "hearken unto me". If that's the case then the literal translation could be *"I, of (the place of knowledge/secrets of spirits), you sing of(?) (our/the people's) heart."* Again, taking it poetically instead of literally, and from the context of the statement it seems like Solas is saying he knows Sera has some inherent spiritual sense of what it is to be Elven, to whit she responds with a raspberry...which one could take either way; that she does and doesn't think it matters, or she doesn't and still doesn't care. Her follow up statement "whatever you said and what I did, same difference to me." could support either interpretation. If nothing else, it would be in character for Sera to dislike flowery language over direct speak.
With the fearing Nothing thing: In one of the streams that Liam Esler and David Gaider recently did on Dragon Age Origins, Liam mentioned a mod (or game mode?) for arachnophobes that edits out spiders, so you literally fight dark blobs of nothingness instead of spiders. It made me think, that maybe Sera seeing literal little Nothings, instead of spiders like the Inquisitor, is a nod to that.
Well it is her biggest fear, according to that headstone. And it makes sense since she refuses to see herself as an elf, she's actually left with being nothing. She cannot see herself as a human since she doesn't trust them nor can she convince herself to be anything other than "people" whatever the hell that means in the grand scheme of things. It once again is reflective of what's going on in the world today. People refusing to see themselves as they really are, eager to accept ANYTHING else as preferrable no matter how damaging it will be to their psyche in the long run. So that just leaves Sera with absolutely NOTHING.
I just think Sarah could have been a powerful Mage among the elves even tide to ancient Elven Magic but since she never learned to use it she said that part of herself away but that's just my theory
Honestly in my mind Sera could become what Solas should have been in the modern age of Thedas. Basically fighting for all the little people who get stepped on and furthermore fight to make the elves respected and treated fairly and most importantly free the elves in Tevinter...
To be fair, its stated that hedge mages develop their magic in unexpected ways that often leave them unable to practice orthodox magic. Maybe she actually is a mage afterall.
I love Sera so much and Im very happy Bioware has made a lesbian romance option. But Im gonna be honest and say that her bangs...? Not good. It does fit her though and I feel bad when I mod it out😣
I do see sera as more than she is but rather than being like a god or something she’s just an elf that has a more natural affinity for magic that she desperately tries to avoid
Sera becomes more change focused if you DONT become a Jenny?! Goddammit now I regret my choices.. AGAIN. On the other hand maybe just being a jenny is better for her like she said in that one solas banter
No, oddly enough, she rejects Maryden's flirting (the song was meant as a come on to her) as creepy, even destroying her instrument when the damn song is sung enough times. If not romanced by the Inquisitor, Sera ends up with the other oddball in the Inquisition, Dagna, the dwarven archanist. Maryden ends up being romanced by a human Cole or if he was made more spirit, then he nudges Marden into a romance with Krem. So Maryden could go either way, with a male human Cole or a trans woman Krem. Still, I imagine there's only so much Krem can do with a sock shoved down her pants.
Aha... AHA!!!! I have proof that is not all we know about her... You didn't mention she has blond hair.. GOTCHA!!!!! Oh wow... that's... that's worse than my usual bad humor... I think I'll just quit while I'm behind... Seriously tho, this was a good video. Very well woth the wait. The character synopsis vids are among my favs of your vids.
"Anarchist derangement." a term coined by a Tevinter magister when studying untrained mages. their magic often developed in unpredictable and stunted ways, frequently leading to madness. Sera is certainly not entirely sane... i think she has magic, and deep down knows it, but rejects it with everything she has. she can use a bow without training, there is that bit with Solas and the breach, Cole's dialogue, and IMO, the most telling is her nightmare of losing he inquisitor and "deja vu" moments. Mages often experience prophetic dreams, and the nightmare.... Demons playing on her fears.
Curious. In Origins, Sten seemed to love cookies. Maybe there's no connection... But then again, Sera seems to have a thing for Qunari... and it could just be that the Qunari are some ancient elven experiment gone wrong. Nah, I don't even know where I'm going with this.
There is a theory which saya that the Qunari come from ancient humans (or elves, I don't remember) that have been modified and have succumbed to dragon blood. (Cassandra comments to a Reaver Inquisitor that dragon blood can totally change those who ingested it, both physically and mentally and, in turn, would serve as a possible explanation for why the Iron Bull possesses the Reaper specialization without actually being it, confirmed by himself). So it is possible that the ancestors of the Qunari (which they themselves are not sure what they were, according to the Iron Bull) ARE indeed human or elven, but completely changed by dragon blood (That could explain why the Iron Bull likes dragons so much for no apparent reason, perhaps he feels related to them?). If it was a failed experiment or their own decision, I don't know.
tbh i kept her around only as cannon fodder, she's incompetent and undisciplined to be anything else. she killed that noble i wanted to interrogate because maybe he could have revealed a larger network of corruption in Orlais. then i would have executed him of course, together with his accomplices. but she just skipped all this by killing him and shitted on the Inquisitor's authority, which is totally unacceptable in a fragile startup army like this.
Hi! U make great videos! Can i use some clips of your videos of Sera to edit a video of her in my channel? And can u tellme how do u record images of the game like u do? Thx! Love ur work!
Liked Sera in the beginning, mostly because of how she talks, but she hates everything i stand for, and mostly disapproves of my decisions. I do and say what i like, or think whats right, not what gives me approval, or not. I don't give a flying rats ass about what others think of me. Solas seems to like me though.. however i kinda ignore him most of the time. So i never even get Sera in my play-troughs anymore, much like that stuck-up biach Viv. Sera isn't that useful in battle either, so she is surplus as far as i am concerned... I really love Dorian.. Do a piece on him... much more interesting.. in all respects. Too bad Ashryn, (my PC) cant romance him... no matter how pretty she is...;)
Agreed... even before we 'directly' knew Solas was who he is... the way he keeps picking at her it almost seems like it'd be a waste. Also... if I am remembering this correctly... he doesn't do this to the elf inquisitor at all. Also her tombstone in the fade really sold it for me. The only way it makes sense to me is if she has experiance with the void imo. There's really no other connection to nothing that she makes that I remember off hand.
@@haedrath I mean if Solas is around. And Mythal has been in Flemeth for that long. Why couldn't another one of the "gods" have managed to keep a piece of themselves in Sera. It would explain so much about Sera that she doesn't even seem to understand. And all the sketchy things Solas bugs her about. And like you said she's afraid of the nothing. Maybe it's Andruil who is afraid to no longer be? Damn I'm so amped for the next game. I just really hope they keep to Inquisiters story.
@@christina2411 Yep! So excited to hear more about the next game... I can't believe its already been 8 months since the tease XD. Haha totally with ya on Sera being a vessel for Andruil. If I had to guess the Inquisitor will be in the game, but we'll play as their agent in Tevinter. I really hope we get to see some interaction more between the Inquisitor and Solas though. Surely we'll hear more soon >.
@@haedrath I would love it if we could still be Inquisiter. Especially because I romanced Solas on my main play through and I HAVE to know if it continues or not. Was he tricking her the whole time, will he change his mind about tearing down the veil, will the inquisiter help him do it?! I need to know lol It'd be far more interesting to me storyline wise if they continued from Tresspasser. Just give Inquisiter some sort of magic arm or some bad ass Dwarven tech and keep it going man! DAI was by far my favorite game so far. I have high expectations for it. I flipped out seeing the teaser. I'll be so bummed if they take it a whole new direction again. Also! I NEED TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON WITH MY WARDEN! lol
@@christina2411 Yeah, I get ya. I was just assuming they'd swap protagonists again like previous games. I feel ya though... even non romanced Solas' arcs felt like they would need more closure... the romanced one more so. It's going to be very interesting confronting him again. (for whatever reason i could only see some of your last message on the notification bell and it doesn't even show up here).
I love sera and I wish the writers were kinder to her. I think she makes sense when she talks, it's a bit scattered but entirely logical but your inquisitior always has to question her n act like she's stupid. The worst is the dream sequence when you romance her, she's clearly freaking out about a nightmare she's had and there is literally no option that's even remotely comforting. I understand it's supposed to be a fight but come on! let the inquisitior say something remotely comforting jesus
I promise you, that it is not, haha. I have done a video on just the theory that Sera is more than she seems, which is probably what you are remembering.
Check out this listening
th-cam.com/video/b0zNyv_WdH0/w-d-xo.html
Sera and Solas banter is at 4.48.30
I felt that she was either a spirit like cole like a shared spirit of hope or faith of the commoners or some kind of modern coming of the ancient elves.
Dwarfs get more approval from her than humans actually. *nerd face*
She seems to think Qunari are hot and dwarves are cute is what I’ve gathered
Female Qunari: *exists*
Sera: "Woof!"
I think she likes Qunari so much because of their dragon blood. Obviously she doesn't do it consciously but that reinforces her character. Also the Dwarf love is from the fact that they can't use magic.
She has a bit of a thing with sizes, doesn't she :3
I'll always love the moment when Sera begs the Inquisitor to stop hurting when the mark is killing them near the end of Trespasser, you could really feel how afraid she was that she might have had to watch us suffer and die.
I think Sera is wickedly clever. Flawed and often unreasonable? Yep. But not stupid. I love well-rounded characters.
To further your point, rogues are known for the intelligence. One of their main stats are cunning after all
@@automah2724 I think it's more Her speech pattern and the way she explains things that make people think she's stupid
Did you even talk to Varric????
I always thought Sera's idiosyncrasies is that she has magical talent, but has them deeply repressed, but they still subtly manifest.
Kinda like conor like to a degree?
@@ZeeBelievable Tempest*
Don't all elves have the ability to use magic? It's just that it's, as you said, repressed in most? I thought that was in a codex somewhere.
"I know of the spirit, trapped, unknowing, in your heart". How's that?
I know how it is, to be as at one with something you don't understand. Like magic.
that translation.. love it!
Also, everybody hates Loghain, and he's probably my favourite character in DAO
I did to, not until I read a “Stolen Throne” Then I honestly couldn’t hate the man😔
@@violetraven8323 The real issue with Alistair, at least for me, is that the first time I played DAO as I got to Lothering I looked at him asking for a direction.
Do not forget hypocritical.
I never romanced Sera, I didn’t realize how sweet it is in a relationship! She’s so thoughtful 🥹 She really grew on me. I didn’t like her much at first but now she’s one of my favorite companions 😊
I think other than Cullen she's the only one you can marry
Weird idea for a theory I got at the end of the episode:
So, Sera doesnt havent any crazy magical abilities, it's just that shes so weird that spirits are attracted to her as she dreams, so when she wakes up so only has vestigial memories from the dreams, but the memories are still there.
Another hint toward that is Solas - who so strongly separates himself from the other elves, not considering them his people - tells Sera "We are not so far apart, you and I"
Because she was an Evanuri? Because she is powerless from Mythal taking her strength and Solas is still collecting his? Or because she is partly from a different time period, lost in the current time?
Do you really need a reason to be interested in dragons?
No. And anyone who believes otherwise gets to spar with a very pissed-off Iron Bull and Sera at the same time.
Sera & Blackwall is Don quixote and sancho panza
Sera really strikes me as qutistic and having adhd. So many of her mannerisms are very similar to one of my best friends irl, who has both
PERFECT AS ALWAYS i still think sera is ether possessed by tranquil anduril or maybe some spirit like anders or she maybe like Cole or a suppressed mage but something is off with her i like her
Here is how I interpreted the documents at 4:07.
Notice of seizure: Lady Emmald died=seizure of property
Authority to seize: the property was to be used for the Grey Wardens to help with the Blight; however, they couldn't find the documents so this was enacted by an Arl (Arl of Denerim?)
Addendum postseizure: The estate was in shambles for multiple reasons (elements, animal infestation, and eventually the Blight).
Spot on for me. When I played the game I figured the same as well. She's something to do with Andruil.
@@tareeb.8494 Fully agree until someone proves otherwise.
She is also vindictive like Andruil so perhaps your on to something though I would prefer if she was just some odd elf.
Varric is good for tryharding but sera is fun. Cole is just... a worst version of inquisitor melee rogue lol
I think she's bound to an elven god or she has the spirit of one. I also believe she's a mage and she uses magic for her bow.
Their's a theory that Sera maybe Andruil Godess of the Hunt.
Makes me grin like a doofus every time
My theory about her oddities is that she’s simply neuro-divergent. Like Cole, but more loud and abrasive, where he is quiet and shy.
I think what solas say to her is something like "we are secret spirits, we share the same heart song" or something.
And her ears point towards the fade because they are searching the magic that once use to cover thedas so she can stop hiding from the world
That opening was stellar! Loved the whole vid. Thank you for all the work you do.
And oddly enough, she generally says that about Varric. She's always saying that he talks and talks and really never says much of anything.
I found her so irritating on my first playthrough but now every time I replay the game, I want to romance her again because she's so damn lovable :)
She's such a slow burn character, I love it. Maybe that's just me.
Been looking forward to this deep dive! I know Sera is just being Sera but in a way I like the theories of her being more.
I don't know, Cass and Sera got along pretty well - they even make a joke at Solas' expense.
About the quote: "Ar Dirthan' as ir elgara, ma sula e'var vhenan "
The second part I understand as: my joy is our heart/my joy is our love - but, since you pointed out that Elgar and Elgara are so close, I would like to point out that vhenan and elvhenan too are rather close.
The best companion ever. Eeeee~
It is my fervent hope that we never see her again in any game.
I needed a reason to stay awake got my popcorn
I just enjoy her banter with Solas
She may prank him and he wouldn't be mad at this
Yeah, she definately is not very 'elfy elf' and may be rude at times but harmles and joking asking-and-answering questions though finds them 'creepy'
Perhaps these things (Fade, magic, elven stuff) make her head hurt because she was once connected to it somehow? but like lost her memory? and those deja vu's...........
Sera being Sera is precious
(lost sense in the middle, sorry)
Sera's my favorite companion and she pretty much never leaves my party
Wasn't Alisair half elf?
No his mother was human, as is his sister in Origins.
Its believed that grand enchanter fiona is his mother because if you read the calling, his father king maric and fiona have a child.
Though he doesn't know fiona is his mother and was told it was a human serving woman from Redcliffe.
Yeah infact doesn't fiona ask about him in inquisition
I was wondering this too! Is it just a theory? I thought it was canon
Alistair is half elf! As others have said, Fiona is his mother, per the calling. You can hear me rant about that in the last episode of The Calling review or the Alistair video, haha.
Sera is the lady of skies
...Cassandra doesn't seem to have a low opinion of her, especially not when compared to Vivienne (actually it’s even debatable with Vivienne who seems more bemused at Sera trying to antagonize her) or Solas?
They're faithful, she's faithful, they have a base mutual respect for each other
I think throughout most of the game Cassandra dislikes Sera.
Might be a forth wall breaky-thing °___°
Uh, don't mind me, I somehow escaped out of the Undertale-Fandom-Trashcan and ended up in the one from Dragon Age instead.
I kinda like the idea though :3
Sera gets a song and video but my dude zevran gets neither 😓😁
BigBadWolf I won’t write a song, but all in due time...
@@GhilDirthalen 😉
He got a four-some with the Hero, Lelliana, and Isabella. He's probably okay with that exchange.
@@rylian21 hmmm... sounds fair
Most of her "weirdness" hits me as just untreated adhd. Based on how those I know (including me) who have it
Her speech is only weird if you're too normal
She’s Andruil.
YES! THE CHARACTER LORE VIDEOS ARE MY FAVORITE💖
14:33 not related to sera but the inquisitors Hookshot arm is soo cool. part of me hopes its a sign DA4 would have more mobility options :D
so wait can you marry sera AND become a red jenny?
Yes! Do it after the pie throwing.
I didn’t know she starts dating Dagna if you don’t romance her. Why my heart feels so warm right now? 💛
I love Dagna and Sera, so I stopped romancing her so she could romance Dagna. I just love that coupling.
If that's the case then the literal translation could be *"I, of (the place of knowledge/secrets of spirits), you sing of(?) (our/the people's) heart."*
Again, taking it poetically instead of literally, and from the context of the statement it seems like Solas is saying he knows Sera has some inherent spiritual sense of what it is to be Elven, to whit she responds with a raspberry...which one could take either way; that she does and doesn't think it matters, or she doesn't and still doesn't care.
Sera is so sweet
Honestly in my mind Sera could become what Solas should have been in the modern age of Thedas. Basically fighting for all the little people who get stepped on and furthermore fight to make the elves respected and treated fairly and most importantly free the elves in Tevinter...
WAIT WHY ARE WE YELLING!
Not good.
It does fit her though and I feel bad when I mod it out😣
She did say that she cuts her own hair with a knife, so as ugly as her hair is, the design is very reasonable 😂
I think one of my sera actually romance the bard
Of creepy song fame
(At least in trespasser)
Could you make something solely on the fade?
Aha...
@Ghil dirthalen here's a screenshot have fun 😂😂😂😂😂😂
She could be a mage but that part is debunked because it would slip through her like Conner. But she could be something else....
Sera is one of those characters that hates EVERYTHING I do!!
Can’t stand her 😆
Probably because you are just a little too elfy
Need to romance Sera again but with a qunari this time.
tbh i kept her around only as cannon fodder, she's incompetent and undisciplined to be anything else.
she killed that noble i wanted to interrogate because maybe he could have revealed a larger network of corruption in Orlais.
then i would have executed him of course, together with his accomplices.
but she just skipped all this by killing him and shitted on the Inquisitor's authority, which is totally unacceptable in a fragile startup army like this.
Hi! U make great videos!
Can i use some clips of your videos of Sera to edit a video of her in my channel?
And can u tellme how do u record images of the game like u do?
Thx! Love ur work!
Girl... We need an Anders and especially a fenris video when the comics are done :)
Didn't sera get kicked out of her clan
There never has been any mention of any clan. Only hints of an alienage.
MY WIFE!!!
Too bad Ashryn, (my PC) cant romance him... no matter how pretty she is...;)
Sera is a mage or have mage-like capabilities.
So, Sera is not so bad after all.
I still think Sera is more than just Sera. Maybe we'll see in the next game. Ugh I can't wait.
Agreed... even before we 'directly' knew Solas was who he is... the way he keeps picking at her it almost seems like it'd be a waste. Also... if I am remembering this correctly... he doesn't do this to the elf inquisitor at all.
Everytime I play DAI, I try to romance another character but I always fall back in love with Sera.
I'm the same way 😂
I am the same but with Cullen
Same
Same but with josephine
Same Iron Bull
I love sera and I wish the writers were kinder to her. I think she makes sense when she talks, it's a bit scattered but entirely logical but your inquisitior always has to question her n act like she's stupid.
The worst is the dream sequence when you romance her, she's clearly freaking out about a nightmare she's had and there is literally no option that's even remotely comforting. I understand it's supposed to be a fight but come on! let the inquisitior say something remotely comforting jesus
I get a lot of andruil vibes from sera
Is it just me or is this a re-upload? I feel like I’ve seen this before. A while ago I swear I’ve seen it before
I promise you, that it is not, haha. I have done a video on just the theory that Sera is more than she seems, which is probably what you are remembering.
@@GhilDirthalen Ah I see that's probably it unless I pulled a Sera myself lol.
