1:25:02 Hunter: (shows up) Luz: What an interesting guy, we have so much in common. I’m really intrigued. Amity: …y o u h o m e w r e c k e- Luz: You’ll be a fine addition to my collection. (Calmly walks over, picks Hunter up like how you’d pick up a cat and gently places him in the “I love and care for you unconditionally but in a close friend/family way” with King, Hooty, Willow, Gus and Vee) Amity: Oh…ok false alarm.
1:16:39 this probably means that the cast must’ve aged up in season 3, just as Star vs the Forces of Evil and The Loud House did in their 3rd and 5th seasons, respectively.
hey, I know everyone's saying that, but I really appreciate what you're doing archieving those events. I almost never can see them live, so that helps a lot. Tysm!
Hi! I just wanted to say thank for uploading this when it came out! I started to make an transcript of the Q+A back then and I finally finished it! WARNING: HUGE WALL OF TEXT FOR A COUPLE OF REPLIES Crew that was in the panel. [Left to right from stream pov]: - Rebecca Bozza (Rose): Production Associate - John Bailey Owen: Season 3 head writer and co-producer of the show, and inspiration for Jerbo - Kat Harman-Mitchell: storyboard artist for s1 and s2 - Andy Gardner-Flexner: Lead art director for s3 - Sam Bosma: location designer [most of the BI and poster design] - Shawn Responts: Lead color designer - Sarah-Nicole Robles: VA for Luz - Cissy Jones: VA for Lilith - Eden Riegel: VA for Boscha and dialogue director Question 1 [4:50]- Talk about your favorite moments from TTT. - John: The scene where Hunter bows to Camila on the sleeping bag, thanking her. And the spooky slow burn vibe. - Kat: the wholesome moment of Hunter and Gus geeking out about Cosmic Frontier. Huge star trek nerd and loved seeing Hunter actually acting like a teen. - Andy: the battle sequence at the graveyard and the entire cemetery vibes - Sam: Sharing the ideas of the human realm with the hexsquad -side note: a lot of new people came onto season 3 with a fresh pair of eyes. - Shawn: Cosmic Frontier and exploration with Hexsquad in the human Realm - Sarah: the montage sequence - Cissy: Lumity studios presents - Eden: why giraffes vanished from the demon realm and learning that Camila is a secret nerd.
Question 2 [10:00]: Taking on such a huge project like this has it's challenges, but also very rewarding ones too. What was the most rewarding aspect of working on season 3? - John: Tackling the questions that were surrounding the world and Luz. How is Luz going to tackle the typical mundane teenage problems + the overarching plot dilemma - Kat: got to work really early on the show, like pilot era. Learning the range of how much they can push the boundaries for everything, thematically to character relationships. There was nothing like this before. Favorite thing to explore was how characters interacted with each other. - Andy: first time doing art direction officially on paper, figuring a way to tell this story and still giving everyone the full satisfaction of a full season through the visuals. - Sam: the relief of never having to draw the same locations again. (Became an automated action) - Shawn: first job as a design lead, loved really pushing the color pallets and design - Sarah: Also was thinking how her character was going to tackle the overall plot questions. - Eden: thinking about the uncertainty of how all of the characters are tackling the plot and seeing all of the moments of high energy to the small slow moments. Question 3 [19:00]: What were some moments that you would have enjoyed seeing the Hexsquad do in the human realm? - John: A road trip along the Eastern seaboard. - Sarah: Who would drive?? - Hunter. - Kat: Just something simple like going to a Grocery store - Andy: More dates. - We are all huge nerds, so if you see references, they were absolutely put there intentionally. - Sam: Having one of the kids go to a human doctor. And finally seeing if demon physiology is really that different from humans - Rebecca: Hunter, you’re made of wood! How weird. - Shawn: I’d love to see them go to a comic con. - Sarah: If they went to school with Luz and how they interact there. They would be bored and feel safe. - Cissy: DETENTION. - Eden: What if King somehow came over and became a youtube star.
Question 4 [23:15]: Fans were wondering how the production pipeline goes down. - John: Brainstorm and pitch the ideas, let the editor choose which ideas that seems the most promising for an episode, make the outlines and have note sessions on the content presented, if approved, you go into dialogue writing and do the same process again, then the big sitdown of the script reading and figuring how to add more layers to it. - Kat: The script is done from here. We sit down with all of the leads and go through the script to highlight what sections are the biggest callbacks to storyboard. Storyboarding can either be a very solo job or a very collaborative job, depending on your dynamic. You do your rough sketches, pitch the final draft to the editor and if approved, do the clean up and that’s it. I really enjoy doing this because by the time the final product is done, it has touched so many points and storyboarding is just that collaborative. - Dana is the type of person who will visually show how she feels about an idea. Ex. she’ll get all giddy and happy if the pitch is something she really enjoyed. - Andy: Once the animatics are done and see how they line up, the production team breaks down every single asset that needs to be done and then we will spilt what assets that needs to be done to the corresponding departments and do a lot of design reviews - Sam: (in the same area for bg design), same process. The start of my job is to see how the overseas studio could handle the bg assets and with the other leads and director to see if we already have an asset from previous episodes. Then how it breaks down in the scene. Finally, the drawing. Peer reviewed multiple times until the black and white outlines are completed - Shawn: (in the same area for color design) Same process with the director. Play around with multiple color schemes and palettes to see how it fits within that scene. When we get all of the finished assets and backgrounds, we play with how the characters would appear in a particular scene. We use a program called Toon Boom Harmony that vectorizes the assets and makes palette lists that can be exactly the same constantly for the overseas studio. - Then a long discussion into HOW MUCH goes into the design. - Sarah: The hardest aspect of voice acting is establishing your character and then it just gets easier. We work with our dialogue director and communicate how a line should be read and more. It's important to know the dynamics of a line, then just saying a line. Another aspect of knowing the dynamics of a line is how another VA presented those lines and to try and match the same energy. - bouncing off one another about voice acting. A good point is how to match every actor’s energy from scene to scene since most recording sessions are individual. - Cissy: For me, I only received the scenes where Lilith is present, I don’t know the whole script. - Eden: Voice actors got the tools, but all they need is the information. We work together on how a line can be talked out. There are times where a line just does not work psychically within the acting and we can talk about how to work with it or change it to fit the scene better. -Cissy: How do you do your job when voicing Boscha? - I tend to direct myself, or if Dana’s there, she helps me out. All of that is just Pre-Production.
Rapid Fire pop questions (5) [55:30]- - John: You have been on the show since the beginning, What is it like to see these characters develop and see how their stories end? - I think most of the characters were fully formed since like the first pitch packet; specifically Luz, Eda, and King. Hunter was really kind of the first one to be introduced and was made up on the fly, but everyone else had mostly been developed. An concept episode was Camila comes to the demon realm at like episode 1.6. They always intended for her to visit it. A scrapped idea was a flying ghost pirate ship. We knew what we wanted to do, but didn’t know how to get there. Original Emperor Belos concept: he wasn't the Emperor, but the adviser to Emperor Pupa- the royal family were insects and Belos was somehow keeping the Emperor in his cocoon, claiming that he was the only one who can communicate with Pupa. - Kat: Since working on the Owl House, you recently got a new position at DTAS on another show called Haley’s on it as a director, what are some things that you learnt from TOH to help you in your new position? - I got to really see how my leads handled the episodes; not just creatively, but how to lead and the process of production. The biggest transition for me so far is not drawing as much now, but more of helping and leading my team to make their own version, the best versions of themselves. I value making sure my team has their own artistic input as much as my own if I was storyboarding. - Andy: This is your first time as an art director, but you have worked on multiple shows before as color lead and also not only having the creative side, but also the production side, so did any of this help you prepare to be an art director? -Yes. Knowing the production pipeline like the back of my hand was crucial. As a color designer, I have to see continuity and touch almost every asset of the show. Being an art director is not just about being able to get into the show creator’s head to know what they want, but it’s also about leading a team and entrusting their visions. - Sam: What were your inspirations and how did you create that world? - Initial Architecture inspiration was Flemish and Dutch inspo with some Gothic aspects. A huge inspiration from Dana and ourselves is from the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch. I took inspiration from soft games and something soul (probably dark souls). Latissa is the armpit. Hair follicles - Shawn: You were also on the show since the beginning, did you feel that your craft has improved in any specific area since then and what is your favorite thing to color on the show? - I would say all; TOH was my first ever color design job and rose through the ranks and eventually became the color lead for season 3. It might have been character coloring, but my absolute favorite to color was the gross stuff- see how much we could push the boundaries to gross out Dana. - Sarah: Since season 1 and 2, Luz has been the optimist, but for season 3, we see her be more pessimistic, how was portraying that worked out? - I'm actually thrilled I got to do a more sad Luz bc we all just got out of covid shutdowns and wasn't feeling the best to her peppiness everyday, so it felt nice to be more organic. Also says it's authentic bc you should also check in your happy friends too and know they're struggling too. - Cissy: Lilith has had a big arc in the show, from being a cold, calculating head of the Emperor’s Coven to being a bad girl historian, so what was it like to see her arc spread out among the seasons and how did you bring that out in your performances? - I had to practice her finger guns just right. Dana warned her that her character is gonna have some emotional baggage. She thought that she was joking. She wasn't. Family is what matters and to have the ability to come back to them is powerful. Lulu is a joy and a nerd. - Eden: What was the biggest adjustment from being VA to a dialogue director and how did you approach the range of emotions that the characters went through? - Seeing a more broader perspective on how to keep track of multiple characters’ emotions and arcs. It was also really nice to have incredible actors that actually listen to you. I think the biggest challenge of the Owl House is the intricate storytelling and tracking on what is going on. For this particular show, it's taking this huge world and making it directly relatable to people.
Answers from Dana via online questions. (6) [1:15:28 ] - V is loosely 15. The Hexsquad would have been entering their sophomore year and Hunter into junior year. - Hexsquad were in the human realm for a few months.
Question (7) [1:17:32]: When you are writing a show like toh, what is solidified? - John: You need to know exactly (but can be changed a little bit) WHO the characters are and play with HOW they would react to situations. Question 8 [1:19:40]: To anyone: Is there anything that we have seen that we couldn't believe that made it pass the studio production team? - Andy: The Magic circle shop in Gravesfield- how many references can be put in there? Yes. 👁👄👁 I always try to hide a little bunny head for my husband. - SMP had a field day with us. Fidgeting over a certain color of an item, but then when suggesting even worse ideas- they loved it. Like Flapjack's scene. -Sarah begged the team not to do it and Dana proclaimed "It is done." - Sam: We had a lot more notes from early on about design, but then we might have broken down their barriers and we learnt their limits too. For example- we couldn't have anything with religious connotations, a DND like manual, but the title was Advanced Sinning. -They were fine with guts and gore, but ALWAYS took my Donald Duck appearances bc of copyrights. Rebecca included another example of trying to use Hades (Hercules) in Luz’s computer background. - Cissy: I was surprised that Lilth's drunk ice cream ranting was allowed. - Kat: I still can't believe we got away with Hollow Mind.
Question 9 [1:24:40] What are your favorite fan theories? - Sarah: When I first read Hunter, I thought he was going to be a potential homewrecker for Luz and LOST IT. But then as I got more scripts coming in, I realized they were like siblings [AGH] - Rebecca: I find it funny how everyone quickly went to the Collector!Luz possession theorizing as Dana drew a sneak peak doodle of Cole in a charity live stream - John: I can’t believe everyone got LEGO EDA right /jokingly 👏👏👏 Question 10 [1:27:20] What would you like to see as a spin-off? - Sarah: I want a HGTV/MTV Cribz show off of the entire Owl house. - Kat: I want to see Lilth historian adventures - Cissy: A "How I met your mother" style flashback show of the teens and how they got to where they are now. - Andy: RAEDA spin off of various situations between them - John: Demon realm lore. Past history and exploring the entire world, outside from the main cast. - Rebecca: A Hooty version of Full House. Question 11 [1:29:35]: What was the hardest character to write/design? Non-character artists, what assets were hard to work with? VA's, Any particular scene, line, episode that was hard? - Sarah: I never gave Eden a hard time because she is always right. The falling screams in 2.17. I kept on making the screams too short and Eden kept on telling her to do it even longer. She was right - John: Belos. A few reasons bc he's from many different places (human realm, but from a very long time ago), has lived multiple lives in the demon realm. What should he sound like- a colonial guy or what? Also his plans and motivations were kept secret for the longest time, so revealing what he wants to do and why he's doing it was difficult. - Andy: The glasses profile change. - Kat: I was trying to figure out how to storyboard King into them because he's so short. Use the pikachu solution- put him on everybody's shoulders. Question 12 [1:33:10]: What would be your palisman? - Shawn: Penguin - Rebecca: A deer or an Elk. Something with antlers, so I can stab someone in case. - Andy: A mole. Bc they're cute sometimes and I'm blind af. - Sam: A giant ground Sloth. Bat queen sized, so I'd have to drag it around everywhere. - Cissy: A honey badger. It would get stuff done and fight, when I would not want to. - Sarah: [in true Luz fashion] idk, I have like 11 different ideas at the same time. A dragon, puppy, an octopus - Kat: A puffball cat. Not sleek like Ghost, but just fluff and eyes. A void.
Question 13 [1:36:05]: What do you think Hunter's first day at Hexside would be like? - John: He would just turf out. - Rebecca/Sarah: He would be eaten by a locker eventually. - Cissy: DETENTION. - Kat: He'd get lost. (Someone in the audience said Flapjack would help him- Andy went TOO SOON MAN!) Question 14 [1:37:12]: With Camila being more fleshed out in TTT, how did you approach giving her such depth? - John: I think, on a practical level, we all knew she was a good mom and only wanted the best for Luz. So it was important to flush out WHY and HOW she sent Luz to the camp. We all had experiences of our moms worked into whatever came out of it. Another aspect that came out of this was us realizing that our parents are just another person who lives, and not just another cartoon mom, helped us break through on her. - Andy: A little bit on the background and design aspect, with talking with Dana and we mutually agreed to hit these points is that Camila is a hyper-supportive mother and really wanted to learn about the queer and trans community to be an advocate for her daughter, friends and adopted children at this point. - Another point we wanted to hit on was what was she going through after Manny passed. You can see incomplete house projects and unopened boxes. Very much a standstill in time. Question 15 [1:41:35]: Which coven would you be in? - Andy: I was thinking about Oracle or construction, but then realized I'm a little wild, so I'd be a wild witch! - Rebecca: Abomination or beast-keeping. - John: Abomination. I want to get to the bottom of what this substance I'm creating life with. - Andy: What if it's just titan snot? - Kat: I like illusions. - Sam: I think oracle and potions. Like dual track. - Shawn: I think I would join one of the smaller covens, like the Tiny Cat coven. - Sarah: Plant or beast-keeping?? No, I’m feeling plant today! - Cissy: The Emperor's coven. 😏 I kid, I kid! Probably beast-keeping, so I can keep all 8 legged friends, far far away. - Eden: The bard coven, obviously. Question 16 [1:44:11]: Which of the human outfits were your favorite? - Shawn: I hate going back to this, but come on, the Cosmic Frontier outfits were so fun! We obviously knew that Hunter and Gus were gonna choose yellow and red to correspond to their favorite characters. I also got to explore all of the Star trek colors. - Rebecca: In design reviews, we get a lot of options and I think for Gus's dinosaur shirt, Dana couldn't decide, so she just flipped an USB in the air like a coin and that's how we got his shirt! - Kat: Hunter's wolf shirt is a VIBE. - John: When we were reviewing the costumes, we tortured Matthew to do more and more until he said stop it, my hands hurt! We eventually did land on the ones you see and just love seeing them in their halloween fits and also Amity's fits are SO GOOD! - Sarah: I was about to say that! She looked so hot. With her roots growing out and just looks stunning! And the couple costumes, I was screaming. Question 17 [1:46:52]: Do you think Flapjack had the chance to try flapjacks? - Sarah: Objectively. - Rebecca: He probably tried it at some point, right?? - Andy: Given what group presented to Camila, Flapjack probably tried something that was told to him that it was flapjacks? Do palismen even have a flavor palette? Question 18 [1:47:41]: What would the Hexsquad's zoadics be? - Rebecca: Hold up, Dana prepped me for this one. - Andy: I will say, relating to Willow a lot and to me personally being a Virgo, she'd be a Virgo. Not canon, just saying my opinion. - Rebecca: Ok, here's the astrology answer (and that's what she literally started with): Just tell them the astrological calendar we know of in the human realm, does not exist on the Boiling Isles. They don't even have the same number of months and their system is even more confusing, therefore, we cannot answer that question. They have 13 months out of the year, 666 days in the year, and all of the animals that are associated with those days/months are different kinds of worms or tube-shaped creatures. - Andy: The Worym Zoadic! Question 19 [1:49:27]: What anime would the Hexsquad and Vee be interested in? - Rebecca: Probably whatever is popular? - Andy: My hero Academia probably? Naruto… I love YuYu Yakashou and I take a lot of fashion inspiration from that show. Obviously if you don't know that show, take it from the time it was created and some things did age well, keep that in mind. But yeah, probably MHA. - John: Gus would like those anime where a person becomes addicted to gambling, but is actually really good at it. A gambling or mojang anime. Question 20 [1:50:45]: Do you have a favorite creature/demon from the show? - Cissy: The fairy from episode 1. - Cissy and Sarah both try to do an impression of the fairy, not realizing Eden was the one who actually did the line. Djadfadk - Kat: The Hoot boy himself. What a disgusting worm. - Rebecca: I like this little guy! (holds up a plushie of the owl beast) - Andy: The titans. (holds up a plushie of King) - Shawn: You don't see a lot of them, but I like the detention guards. - Sam: I really like the Bat Queen. Her voice and her being the Titan's palisman? - John: She's still too small to be the Titan's, but probably was a giant's palisman, and got lost and had to find another position and became a caretaker.
dang if Luz is 15 then I'm a bit sad we didn't get to see a Quinceañera. I think it would have been in that time skip between king's tide and thanks to them.
Ur an actual life saver THANK U FOR UPLOADING THISSS

Luz: What an interesting guy, we have so much in common. I’m really intrigued.

(Calmly walks over, picks Hunter up like how you’d pick up a cat and gently places him in the “I love and care for you unconditionally but in a close friend/family way” with King, Hooty, Willow, Gus and Vee)
Amity: Oh…ok false alarm.
1:16:39 this probably means that the cast must’ve aged up in season 3, just as Star vs the Forces of Evil and The Loud House did in their 3rd and 5th seasons, respectively.

(6) [1:15:28 ]
- V is loosely 15.
-Sarah begged the team not to do it and Dana proclaimed "It is done."
- Sam: We had a lot more notes from early on about design, but then we might have broken down their barriers and we learnt their limits too.
But then as I got more scripts coming in, I realized they were like siblings [AGH]
- Rebecca: I find it funny how everyone quickly went to the Collector!Luz possession theorizing as Dana drew a sneak peak doodle of Cole in a charity live stream
- John: I can’t believe everyone got LEGO EDA right /jokingly 👏👏👏
Question 10 [1:27:20] What would you like to see as a spin-off?
- Sarah: I want a HGTV/MTV Cribz show off of the entire Owl house.
- Kat: I want to see Lilth historian adventures
- Cissy: A "How I met your mother" style flashback show of the teens and how they got to where they are now.
- Andy: RAEDA spin off of various situations between them
- John: Demon realm lore.
She was right
- John: Belos.
- Shawn: Penguin
- Rebecca: A deer or an Elk.
A dragon, puppy, an octopus
- Kat: A puffball cat.
(Someone in the audience said Flapjack would help him- Andy went TOO SOON MAN!)
Question 14 [1:37:12]: With Camila being more fleshed out in TTT, how did you approach giving her such depth?
Djadfadk
- Kat: The Hoot boy himself. What a disgusting worm.
- Rebecca: I like this little guy! (holds up a plushie of the owl beast)
- Andy: The titans. (holds up a plushie of King)
- Shawn: You don't see a lot of them, but I like the detention guards.
- Sam: I really like the Bat Queen. Her voice and her being the Titan's palisman?
- John: She's still too small to be the Titan's, but probably was a giant's palisman, and got lost and had to find another position and became a caretaker.

Hi
But Gus is two years younger than Luz and 4 than Hunter. Doesn't that make him a Middle Schooler in 7-8th grade?
no, he skipped grades!! he’s in the same grade as the rest of them, but younger. He’d be a 13 year old sophomore.
@@shmebulocck oh right! I forgot about that. Thanks for telling me.
