    Fire blast has one of the coolest animations in gen 1. I didn't think Ninetales would do as well as it did based off the Scotts thoughts run. Pokemon yellow really is way different than red and blue.

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987
      @GymLeaderMatt1987  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Easier early, a few extra difficulties late for sure. Although I'm not sold on Giovanni being too bad. You can just survive Dugtrio, mimic Double Team and even the weakest Pokemon can do it but surf on Slowbro or a ground type on the champion team is rough.
      But I'll evaluate both versions and put the Pokemon in the best position to have their best runs. Yellow is the solution for several runs!

    Evolution stone AND extremely limited moveset is always a rough combo, so it was a nice surprise to see Ninetales still performing that well.

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987
      @GymLeaderMatt1987  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For sure. If you just understand that Double Edge can cut out multiple levels, you can make it pretty quick and consistent! Arcanine will likely be about the same but with more stats.

    Being a fast and bulky mon like Ninetales is pretty underrated for challenges like these. It’s always great to hear about the optimizations that make a run like this happen. As for why there’s no TM for Flamethrower in Gen 1, maybe they just wanted to make Fire Blast “really special”. They probably could’ve made a TM for Flamethrower in Victory Road since that’s where Moltres is.

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987

      I think what it all boils down to is that they probably just didn't think about it.

    Speaking of Ninetales, while most of the Johto arc of the anime was forgettable for me, the episode where Brock met a ghost Ninetales (Just Waiting on a Friend) was one that I particularly enjoyed.

    Ninetails looks like it has nine lives with its grace in taking down the competition. Considering how it did, I really wonder just how insane a flamethrower would bolster it. Btw loved the haunting soundtrack edit at Agatha’s battle. simple and effective!

      A flamethrower at level 40~ would probably knock it's time down several minutes at minimum. If it was like Charmander to Charizard and got EQ upgrade over Dig then that would also save a minute or two. If it got a psychic move like future gens then that's probably even more time.
      I'm about to start looking into my cross gen runs for Sun/Moon and Alolan Ninetales will be nutty.

  • @cody-m
    @cody-m ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I really dug this run. I certainly wasn't expecting Ninetales to do well, but you really developed a clutch strat that worked out well for Gyarados. And using a move like Double Edge that doesn't see a lot of action too, that was cool. I like that you operate outside of the usual box a good amount of the time, whether it's stuff like that, the egg runs, etc

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987
      @GymLeaderMatt1987  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s a good compliment! Yea it allowed me to shave off the consistent 5 levels it would take body slam to do the same or 2 levels if I was going to just take a few extra resets. Rest and double edge is a legit time save and it’s sad you don’t see people use it more.

    My theory on why there's no flamethrower is because they looked at the three starters and thought if you teach your water pokémon surf it can't forget it. And there's no flamethrower for grass types so they didn't want to give flamethrower to the fire starter to make it even

    The only 2 Fire types that don't learn the move naturally are Moltres and the Ponyta line so I can easily see them overlooking it without realizing that both Arcanine and Ninetales could also lock themselves out of the move by evolving too early.

    I think not having Flamethrower is due to the game's intended routing. By the time you get to Blaine, Flamethrower isn't insanely strong like Thunderbolt is after you beat Surge, so they made Fire Blast the TM of choice for Gym 7. I think it's a fairly major oversight but Gen 1 has a lot of quirks. Great run!

    I get the impression that the devs really overvalued the extra power of the 120 base power moves. They come really late (Cinnabar/Power Plant), have to be searched for and have huge tradeoffs, whereas moves like Dig and Thunderbolt get shoved down the player's throat quite early on. I can imagine a scenario where they didn't include a Flamethrower TM because they didn't think the players would want one.

    In gen 1 the only fire type lines that don't have access to flamethrower via level up are ponyta and oddly enough moltres. That's probably why they don't get a tm for flamethrower. It's also not a particularly good coverage type either. Compare that to water types that don't get a 95 bp option naturally and all have to fix it with an hm.

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987
      @GymLeaderMatt1987  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd argue Flamethrower coverage for desperate Lorelei fights is decent and since you get it mid game like the others it would help Erika and more importantly it would be an option for Exeggutor. I think it's something clearly missing from the game and it's been every game since gen 3! Crystal as well if you count move tutor.

    Commenting for 1 of my fave OG mon's (and the algorithm)
    I think it was part oversight and part logic that Flamethrower wasnt a tm. Few early mons can even learn flamethrower besides Charmander since most fire types arent around until Blaine's gym... and they prolly didnt want to introduce flamethrower near gym 4 anyway. Ice beam is also super effective but is mainly learned by water types who are a risk against Erika

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987
      @GymLeaderMatt1987  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know about the logic of not wanting to introduce it in the mid game. You can get Pyschic, Thunderbolt, Earthquake, Surf, Ice Beam, Body Slam, and Dig by that time. This is a case of Occam's razor and I think the simplest answer that they just didn't think about it is probably correct.

    Is it bad that Ninetales may be my favorite 1st-Gen Pokemon? And probably high in my top five for all Pokemon?
    Anyway, Ninetales is one heck of a Special sweep. In 1st Gen as well, Ninetales can even tank Special moves pretty well; apparently, its Special Defense is better than its Spec.Atk in later generations, too! It's usually a pain to wait till Vulpix gets Flamethrower -- especially if you catch a Vulpix that doesn't have Ember -- but it's well worth it for Ninetales. I usually get one as soon as I first leave Lavender Town.
    And yeah, it's really weird they didn't have a Flamethrower TM! They have one for Bubblebeam and Thunderbolt, but no Flamethrower? Chances are they skipped it because by the time you reach Blaine, the mid-tier Fire move might've seemed underwhelming? You do get Bubblebeam and Thunderbolt early on from Misty and Surge, after all.

    I think the lack of any TM for Flamethrower is mostly oversight. Consider how Water has not just Surf as a high end move, but also Water Gun and Bubblebeam TMs. There's no Ember or Vine Whip TM in early game, and no high end Grass attack for the high power, high accuracy archetype between Giga Drain and Solar Beam at all. Grass, Bug, Flying, Fighting, Ghost, Rock, and Dragon have no equivalent to Flamethrower, Surf, Earthquake, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, and Psychic. The closest Fighting even has is Submission.

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987
