    I've been flying RC for about 2 years and have never bothered to set rates on any of my planes, mostly because I don't understand the reason behind it. Does flying full throws cause damage to the servos, or is there something else I'm missing? I think just being easy on the sticks gives me a more scale feel to flying. I'm willing to learn if anyone is willing to set me straight on this issue.

    • @MotionRC
      @MotionRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a hard question to answer in a TH-cam comment, but basically many RC aircraft or different types use the same servos, so for instance, if you had a B-24 bomber and a Sport Jet, why would you want the bomber to have as much throw as a the sport jet? Setting some rates just makes things easier. You don't have worry about being easy on the sticks if you have a few different options like a low, medium and high rate setting. When you are in low, you know you won't be able to make any sharp movements accidentally because we are all human and make mistakes from time to time

    • @srcaviationhanger6445
      @srcaviationhanger6445 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MotionRC Thank you for that. I'll get the manual out on my transmitter and learn how to set rates and give it a try. I guess I've been lucky so far. In the 2 years I've been flying, I've only had 1 bad crash involving a tree. (knock on wood).

    • @MotionRC
      @MotionRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@srcaviationhanger6445 I hear you and really it all comes down to personal preference. They are a good starting point and are in no means necessary. Rate are like Expo, everyone likes different settings and everyone is right if they are comfortable flying that way. But for instance, on my taildragger warbirds, I prefer high and low elevator rates as I want max elevator throws when I taxi and land to keep the tail down, but low while flying as I don't even want the option of having to much pitch or she won't look scale in the air

    • @srcaviationhanger6445
      @srcaviationhanger6445 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MotionRC Right on, I get it now. I figured I'd try it out and see the differences it makes. My biggest concern was the possibility of damage to the electronics. I've never seen a video of someone not using rates. I've often thought about it but never bothered to ask.

    • @dnkayto
      @dnkayto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Think of rates like the stick or yoke of an aircraft… a slower plane uses more stick movement for the lack of air moving over the wings, but if you watch a fighter pilot they barely move the stick because they are going so fast, almost like when driving on the highway and you barely have to move the wheel to switch lanes, lower rates makes the plane less twitchy at speed, but at slower speeds makes (some planes) sluggish and slow to respond, conversely high rates makes the plane more twitchy at speed, but allows for more correction and response during slow flight. Essentially instead of having to try and make microscopic corrections with the stick at high speed, you change the rates so the same movement just equals less deflection
