If you’re doing THIS then you're (PROBABLY) growing your Fruit Trees WRONG!!

  • Why wait up to 7 years after planting a fruit tree, to find out you got it wrong.
    30 years ago we started by buying a 4,000 tree apple orchard that we transitioned to organic and ultimately tore out to replant into a permaculture inspired mixed orchard.
    These are the keys I wish I knew that would have saved me tens of thousands of dollars along the way.

      I always get bareroot trees in the mail and they start to fruit either the same year or next year, where as my conventional nursery trees i bought in pots fed osmocote type fertilizer for 2-3 years take years and years longer to become productive and I notice them going through shock when transitioning from chemical to organic like an addict suffering withdrawal and failing to form the proper relationships they need right away.

      You should plant mulberry trees they fruits on there first season there is tons of varieties and there much harder to kill then most other tries there some the sweetest fruits in cold climates can also grow to Alaska to Hawaii to Arizona to Canada. There drought, heat, cold, water, humid, shade resistant and there easily grown from cuttings. Some mulberries cam grow as big as your hand other can get as big little finger. There so many varieties there is native kinds and non native kinds. There white, red, black, purple mulberries come in so many shapes and sizes.

    You have no idea how much I appreciate the probably, the amount of videos of people saying "Something YOU have been doing wrong" like they know you or they are the smartest in the world and figured it out, has such a smug pompous vibe, all you gotta do is put (probably) and its a legit statement and can apply too everyone. 10/10 before the video even airs.

    Excellent Video! I did my research and planted resistant cultivars, and I grow on dwarfing stock that does well in my area due to limited space. I graft other resistant varieties to my trees. I have a few totally healthy crab apple trees that I also grafted to--no serious problems so far and I never spray anything. There are so many apple cultivars to choose from out there.
    I purchase bare root trees through the mail because my area (rural) either only sells the store varieties of apple trees or else charges ridiculous prices for potted trees. The nurseries I buy from like FEDCO Trees and Burnt Ridge Nursery, only sell them in the spring, so although not ideal planting time, I get them in the earth ASAP, mulch and double fence and water deep when needed. So far, so good.

    About the ¼” galvanized steel mesh 18 to 24” long: This year we had high snow banks in our small home orchard, and the rabbits were able to stand on the frozen snow and completely girdle 13 of my 2 year old fruit trees that I had carefully shaped over 2 seasons. Thankfully 10 of these sprouted from dormant shoots along the remaining trunk. If you expect snow drifts in your orchard, put up some 48” or 60” fencing around the trees you care about. All of the damage occurred over a single weekend when it was too cold for my dog to be out there on patrol. I have a four foot fence around the orchard, but the little bunnies dug under the fence to get in where I didn’t notice (a big pile of cut branches next to the fence). I don’t like bunnies anymore…

    • @StefanSobkowiak
      @StefanSobkowiak  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry about that. Leaving some low branches trained to touch the soil will deflect such movements away from the trunk. Yes fortunately you can rebuild the trees with shoots above the graft line. You won't notice the difference in 3 years.

      Probably raccoons, opossums or flying squirrels since they are not seen in the daytime. If you don't have branches touching the soil for them to climb up you can use a 4 foot stove pipe all around the trunk. If it's slick they won't be able to climb (unless they glide in). Good luck.

    I would rather see my fruit tree die than spray poison. I started growing organically 66 years ago. I made a lot o mistakes, but I was on the right track. In the fifties I could compost in 11 days. But in the early 2000s I stumbled on the best mulch ever, 15-1 shredded tree leaves. For a big "Food Forest" I would also use composted wood chips covering the whole forest ground.
    If I had limited space, I would grow only fruit that can't be bought "tree ripened", e.g., 'cots, peaches, nectarines. They don't have flavor/nutri if picked partially ripe.

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge

    • @thecitizenfarmer7700
      @thecitizenfarmer7700 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Basically you don't want the tree to set and be wet for long periods of time without drying out especially when it is humid and not very windy. You want your tree to dry out in the late afternoon so it doesn't go over night with damp leaves but morning sun also may be better because water will condense on the tree overnight and you want the morning sun to dry it off as soon as possible.
      Long story short you probably want morning sun in that case. But you take what you can get.
      Some more native varieties of trees may tolerate more shade. It's diverse fungal and microbiological communities that actually protect trees and bring them important minerals they would not otherwise be able to reach or metabolize. Apples are a native understory tree of Kazakhstan for example.

    • @StefanSobkowiak
      @StefanSobkowiak  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I messed up. I meant to say if you have shade then morning sun is better than afternoon sun. You want the leaves to dry quickly to reduce the incidence of disease if they are susceptible. Full sun is best.

    • @carlac4407

      Yes, 80% of roots growing take place in the fall/winter. According to Stefan

    • @josephjones5070
      @josephjones5070 ปีที่แล้ว

      After leaf fall.
      There is still a month or two after leaf fall before the ground freezes. This is the time when woody plants put all of their energy into root growth.
      Think about how much growth you see on the shoots of the plants in a month to six weeks in the spring. This is what happens with roots in the fall.
      If you mulch heavily around the trees during fall planting, then it will take longer for the ground to freeze under the mulch, giving an extended window for fall root growth.

      If the permaculture message is ever going to reach the masses, then some compromises need to be made in the approach.
      The foundational proofs for the viability of the permaculture orchard have been achieved. And Stefan has been exceptionally generous in his educational content during the time period that it has taken to get this far. (I understand that the content also benefitted Stefan as well, tit for tat)
      Now that the foundation is fixed, the message needs to go out to the kind of people that aren't going to have the level of interest for the original kind of content from this channel. If the idea of a multi species permaculture orchard is ever going to catch on in a way that truly changes the way things are done, then it needs to reach those who aren't already on board. It needs to see capitalization and be marketed for broader and more general appeal.
      Give Stefan the credit he is due. The man has created a wonderful example to work off of and he laid it all out for anyone who wants to follow. And he is continuing to push the ideal out to an ever broader audience with this new (to this channel) style of content. This will only serve to improve the chances of others being able to develop successful ventures of their own.
      Stefan has been growing his orchard and this channel for years and years. He has earned the trust that he will proceed with the wisdom gained from everything that has come before.
      Go for it Stefan and Zack!
      We're behind you for as far as you care to take this!

    Did you shamelessly steal the creative work of title, thumbnail, and intro from @AnneofAllTrades without adding any transformation or giving proper credit?

      Hi Witt, here’s the reply I sent to Ann: Hi Anne we did use your thumb and title as a base, I’m sorry if it was offensive. I was amazed your video did so well because frankly the information in the video was very weak and dated. I know a lot of the info out there about pruning is confusing and based on gardening practices rather than best practices. How can I make it up to you?
