    Mourinho had a much tougher journey and still won. What he did in Porto and Inter Milan is unmatchable - especially at Porto.
    Guardiola is different. He seems to make good teams even better and his style of football is very appealing.
    Two giants, but for me Mourinho stands alone. It’s a matter of preference I guess.

      I think most people seem to ignore the fact that Barcelona 2007/2008 were probably the worst Barcelona team in decades. They had to go through the playoffs to qualify for the Champions League. And Pep made that a treble winning team just a season later. He makes great teams out of smaller ones too...

      How long has Mou been manager compared to Pep?

    • @joshuajonas6946
      @joshuajonas6946 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      The difference in years is insignificant. For at the end of the day, very few coaches have his record of success in the same number of years. Give credit where credit is due. Guardiola milked that amazing Barca team for years whilst Mourinho has done it in 4 different countries with each team varying in budgets and resources. Let's not mention that Porto team and the Inter team. Mourinho's teams become better as a result of his work but that depends on what you value in football. I see a man who has mastered the art of defending and shutting down the opposition. I see teams mastering the art of the counter-attack. Mourinho records are well documented, for instance, the most league goals scored in a season with Real Madrid. For someone labeled as a defensive manager that record destroys critics. They also miss the stats on Chelsea's record-breaking side from 2004-2006. If you send both managers to Portsmouth FC who have no money for transfers, mourinho will win the league but Pep would need "certain" players to fit his system and would be frustrated because he has no money to buy them.

    • @joshuajonas6946
      @joshuajonas6946 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My analogy with Portsmouth is obviously hypothetical. He won't coach them because the best teams pay for Pep and smaller teams can't compete. Yet, the analogy illustrates the classic view of many today who value Peps beautiful style over Mourinho's pragmatic approach that gets results. Don't bring United into this for again he needs time and has already proven that he has taken the team to a higher level. They have won more games and played better football than since the days of Sir Alex. What did Pep win last year? 0 How much has Mourinho won? I'll let you check that stat and you will see. Granted Pep and City will more than likely win the league this year. Congratulations Pep and City. However, the Premier league is fluid. Anyone can win the Premier League. It's that competitive. From Leicester to Chelsea, the only dominance that league has ever had was Liverpool in the 90's and United after that. Just like Pep after failing last year invested and got it right. Mourinho will do the same again this summer and you will see. Btw, CR7 could play with Portsmouth and win the league but, Messi couldn't.(Sorry couldn't help myself)

    • @joshuajonas6946
      @joshuajonas6946 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The hypotheticals were obviously used to highlight the facts that are ever present in my discourse on the topic at hand. I'm not denying Peps success, or that he gets results. I'm only saying that you are not looking at it from a holistic point of view. The broader picture shows that Mourinho is currently more successful and that is attriubuted to his genius as a manager. Few would argue that Sir Alex is probably the greatest manager of all time. 49 trophies over 37 years in management. Do the math. That means Guardiola is better according to your standard. LOL! If you think Pep is better than Sir Alex then we can just end this discussion here.

      ...because juventus, ac milan, fiorentina and i think a few others were punished for match fixing...and i remerber that inter case was no different but the owner of club did cooperate with authorities and was acquitted. inter was the only big italian club that got stronger and other teams punished, or relegated.

      Igy E so you don't consider As Roma a big team? Inter scored in the 85th minute to win at Sienna, and win the league by 2 points. Roma finished just 2 points behind them. That is not competition? I don't get it.
      The thing is that inter had a good team, but Mou over achieved with that team. Remember what happened the following season under Benitez?

    • @TotalrefundCule

    • @franke4391
      @franke4391 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Igy E true. But they were good that season which is the basis of comparison here. Inter had an 11 point lead by Christmas. They cut it down to 2.
      It not just right to insinuate that a team that won a league by just 2 points didn't have competition.

    • @TotalrefundCule
      @TotalrefundCule 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      frank e ...man city had competition from Conte's chelsea, Wenger's Arsenal, Klopp's Liverpool, Pochettino's Tottenham, Mou's United and a few others that escape my mind...and Man City has a 10+ point difference with strong competition. All the clubs mentioned above are really good and getting better and better....it just happens that that man city is the best of all of them.
      Juventus and Milan and Lazio and Fiorentina were not strong. Specially the first two. Of course they were competing because they are great clubs...but they weren't at their full potential.
      Listen, remove Man city from the epl and who is the the #1 in the standings? Man United, right? And by how many points? Everything becomes much tighter, right? Put Man City back...and who becomes #1 and by how many points? Exactly!
      Conte, klopp, Mou, Pochettino, and Pep got the transfers that they requested...except for wenger but that is another story and a lost cause. What im saying that if Pep's city were excluded....the epl standings would be tight. Simply put...pep is beating everyone....including Mou. This is a real tough competition and look where mou's united is in both points and volume of football.

      Pique actually re-signed for Barcelona the summer prior to the treble winning season, and Puyol may have been thought of as a great player but I highly doubt that many people in England were envious of a 1.68 m CB.
      My point is that after Guardiola ditched Deco and Ronaldinho, hardly anyone would have been expecting him to achieve what he did for a team that had just gone the prior two seasons trophy less. The 2009 UCL winners only had 3 players from the same starting XI as the 2006 winners. Its unfair to him to hold that Barcelona team responsible for his success when he was fundamental to shaping it.
      Imagine Mourinho gets the Barcelona job like he wanted. Sure they may have been successful due to their buying power and the otherworldly talent that is Messi. However, I would guarantee that Xavi and Iniesta would not have been pillars of the team.

Ronaldinho, Zambrotta, Deco, Thuram - out of the door. Yaya Toure and Eto'o the following season. In their places - Sergio B., Pedro etc. I remember thinking at the time, that he was nuts and he was gonna get sacked before Christmas. Not to mention Barca had no trophies for 2 consecutive seasons before Guardiola. Now everyone is saying, that he inherited a winning team. It was the same with Bayern. How many trophies did Bayern win before the treble-winning season?

    • @EdwinLuciano
      @EdwinLuciano 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Guardiola was very brave. And it took courage to turn that team around but
      except for Samuel Et'oo (who he kept for a year) all of the players Pep got rid of were on a downward trajectory in their careers. In their places he added Pedro and Busquets who were untested but he had Messi, Xavi and Iniesta in the midfield and Carles Puyol at the back (three out of the four of those guys had won the Champions League and played a vital role in the team).
      That being said, he did not inherit a winning team; Barça at the time were a disaster although they had just won the CL a few years before. It wasn't because they didn't have good players and even after Guardiola's purge they still had a great team. The problem was that Rijkaard's management style was not sustainable.
      But in the end, neither was Guardiola's (by his own admission) and that's why he left. But while he was there, he took them to a different level.

    • @BallisticBurns
      @BallisticBurns 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ole Vaskov Well that was a wasted paragraph wasn't it. That wasn't even anywhere near the thought process.
      Mourinho is the better manager. You look at how he fires his players up, his tactics behind the scenes in how he motivates his squad. He deflects heat away from his players when they've played badly. I've not heard anyone come out and say 'how aweful' he's been to them. I've heard plenty come out and criticise Pep and how he treats his players. Mourinho's man management is second to none at the moment.
      A manager takes on a role a lot more wider than just solely focusing on the playing style, quality of play and the results. They also deal with and focus on a whole variety of other roles that are included in a football club.
      You look at SAF for example. He very rarely took a training session. He may have been their and watched on, but, didn't actually take responsibility of that, whereas a coach would without fail lead the training session.

    • @BallisticBurns
      @BallisticBurns 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ritesh Thapa Back up that statement. I agree Pep's the better coach. So prove to me how he's the better manager given the difference between the two roles?

    • @IOV89
      @IOV89 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Do you see his tactics behind the scenes? Nah you dont. You see how he motivates players? Nah, almost certain you dont. Point number 1 - not valid. You havent heard anyone say they dont like mou? Pepe, Ramos,Casillas, Hazard? to name a few. He deflects heat away from players? Martial, Joe Cole, Hazard even Ronaldo(I think) - deffo no deflections there, was there? Mou GETS SACKED for a reason. Point number 2 - not valid. Also, "I've heard plenty come out and criticise Pep and how he treats his players" - who Eto'o and Ibra? Well they are 2 massive egos ofc they will come out and say something because they didn't play as much under him, but he was still succesful without them so that doesn't matter. (I'm sure Bendtner, for example, prolly hated Wenger)
      Ok now onto the whole manager vs coach thing. So you think that Pep doesn't have input into what happens with transfers (pretty sure he single handedly picks players out), youth setup or as you so generaly put it (probably because your knowledge isnt as vast as i thought) "whole variety of other roles " other than training players and the way they play?
      NOW you have a point with Pep being at training sessions more than Mou - simply because boring-counter attacking-defensive style of play is a lot easier to teach than attacking football, Mou probably tells his coaches what he wants and they go do it for him, Pep philosophy is harder to grasp and is UNIQUE so not easy to teach and requires more of a hands-on approach.

    Pep Guardiola will get your team to play attractive free flowing football, win trophies, promote young talent, develop a great team for the future, unlock potential in players they never thought they had it in them, make the players more flexible so they can cover for the players who are injured and will have a rapport with the squad.
    Mourinho will get your team to play ugly, bus parking, against the run of play, anti-football, win trophies, doesn't promote young players or care about building a team for the future, will throw his own players under the bus when they under-perform, falls out with the team in his 3rd season and will leave the club in a horrible state!
    So yeah, Guardiola is the better manager in every possible aspect!!

    this is ridiculous, pep manchester city has net spent double compared to other EPL teams in the last 5 years. if you can spend that much on quality players, of course you will have some success. Jose mourinho has done it with lesser players and much less budget, FC porto, Inter milan.
    Bayern munich has won the past 8 bundesliga title, with or without guardiola they are just as good. Barcelona has won the la liga 5 in the last 7 years, they even won the UCL after pep. Now the issue is, Pep has never won the UCL without messi and that legendary barcelona team. He has always one of the strongest team every year, the year before he took over Bayern munich they were UCL champion. he has failed the trophy that every team he managed really wants, which is the UCL. but he always tried to downplay it because he knows it will hurt his legacy.

    Mourinho destroys the beauty of football. He wants to take the romance and inspiration out of football for the cost of winning. As a chelsea fan I'm grateful to Mourinho for whatever he did. But I'm definitely not grateful to the way he shoved out technically brilliant players like De bruyne and Mata ( who was the one of the best in the world at that time, look at him now). For me thus, I'd prefer Pep over Mourinho any day because I believe football should be a form of artistic expression and Pep is one of the few in the current world who has stuck to that principle and has won things as well. Mourinho is definitely a better organizer and motivater but that's not what football is about for me. Others are welcome to disagree but I believe football is art and its for bringing joy to the fans who spend their hard earned money and sacrifice time to watch their favourite teams. Conte is I think weirdly represents the a balance between the two. So COYB!

      Mourinho tactically is a better manager? Oh please, no way. Meanwhile Pep creates lineups and positions that interchange whenever countered, and keep constant possession. No way Mourinho is a better tactician.

  • @nib4626
    @nib4626 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Mourinho is hands down the best tactician of modern times, and arguably even the best in the history of the sport.
    To win the Champions League with Porto is outrageous. His 04/05 Chelsea team was the greatest Premier League side in history, statistically. His 05/06 team was almost as good. He went to a struggling, ageing Inter Milan and won the treble. He then went to Madrid and led them to their first league title in years with a stunning points tally - breaking the long era of Barca dominance, as he was hired to do. He then returned to Chelsea and won the Premier League again with a mixture of gorgeous attacking football and astute defensive tactics.
    He revolutionised tactical approaches to the game. So many of the great current managers were heavily inspired by his style - Simeone, Conte, Sampaoli, Pochettino, etc. His tactical innovations became so unbelievably successful that the entire world of managers had to come up with a way to combat it. Tiki taka was born as a way to beat Mourinho's tactics, such was his influence. His last few years have been a bit average, but his overall career is truly great. Alongside Ferguson as an all time great.

Guardiola system was central to messi so we expect incredible results. The squad depth? umm yea and no they were short on players in 2010 or 2011. It's not squad depth but its much more than that. Guardiolas team always have been short squads up to 17 players.

    Mourinho once hailed a pragmatic genius by the English media in his first spell at Chelsea in a time when Ferguson and Arsene were in a two horse race for at least a decade.
    He won the treble with Porto who had Deco who was their only world class player and turned Benni McCarthy into one of the most feared strikers in Europe
    Brought life into the premier league with the rise of Chelsea in his first season.
    Took a below par Inter Milan who had Diego Milito and Lucio who were past their prime and revived Materazzi's career to win a treble in a time Barcelona,Madrid and Bayern Munich were far superior to that Inter Milan.
    Pep started with the Barcelona youth team with Xavi,Iniesta,Busquets and Messi.
    He earned his spot as manager at Barcelona when they honestly did not expect anything from them despite having Ronaldinho who was the best player on the planet overachieved and rode their luck at times against Arsenal.
    He knew he had to change Barcelona even if it meant getting rid of Ronadinho which is crazy to think of now and installed tiki taka as an adaption from total football which led to the rise of Barcelona for half a decade.
    When he moved to Bayern Munich after they just won a treble with Jupp Heyneckes who is incredibly underrated.
    He changed the system at Bayern which was a mistake in itself because they did not need the shift it was an already great technical team.
    His achievement there was improving Philip Lahm from left full back into a bonified midfield maestro.
    Yes he won all the domestic titles when he was there but failed to win the Champions League and will be regarded as not a failure but an unecessary luxury because they were and are managers capable of winning the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich despite the improvement of style of play.
    Manchester City fastfowarded the Pep effect by giving him unlimited transfer funds to buy whomever he wanted but what he did to City who had Aguero,Kompany and Toure as the spine of that already great team were not getting any younger he brought in youth even though he spent a lot of money even overspent on Bravo and Nolito.
    He has made City an exciting passing team didnt matter though because he didnt win the Premier league last season so he spent again this season but this time they have to win the treble to be considered successful.
    So Jose Mourinho is still better for me but Pep is worth a mention along with Conte,Lopetegui,Heyneckes who are also magnicifent managers.
    Coming from a Chelsea fan.

    Re-wind the clock to 2016 before Guardiola announced that he would leave Bayern for the Man City, and before everyone knew that Mourinho was going to replace LVG at Man Utd. If there had been poll asking Man Utd fans at that time whether they wanted Guardiola or Mourinho to become their next manager, I bet that most of them would have chosen Guardiola.
    Both managers will guarantee trophies at a big club, but under Guardiola the team will play more attractive football. Mourinho's tactics against City were just cowardly. Plus while Guardiola falls out with big name players like Eto'o, Ibrahimovic and Hart, Mourinho's falls out with squads of players like Real Madrid when everyone hated him by the time he left and at Chelsea when the players downed tools under him in 2015/2016. So there is less negative press and publicity to deal with under Guardiola.
    And at Bayern, Guardiola brought in young players like Kimmich and Kingsley Coman and spent a lot of time developing them, despite knowing that he would soon leave the club and wouldn't be there for their prime years. Mourinho would never do anything like that. So Guardiola leaves clubs in better positions than Mourinho does as well.

    City’s fullbacks when Pep arrived in 2016 were Zabaleta, Sagna, Clichy and Kolarov. All past their prime. Joe Hart was the goalkeeper. Grandpa Toure was still a starter in midfield. Bony, Fernando and Mangala all had over 30 appearances in the previous season.

    This question is just very skewed towards the manager that plays attacking football. It's like asking who they think is better: an architect or an engineer. Sure the architect paints the pretty pictures, but the engineer gets the job done and does the nitty gritty. For me Mourinho is serial winner. And that's what makes a great manager. At the end of the day 3 points is 3 points. And Mourinho knows how to get those points... Consistently....
    Also, I don't see why people are praising Pep Guardiolla as if, man-for-man, City haven't had the best squad in the league for the past 4/5 years. All theyre doing is living up to your potential 👏👏. I'm not deluded I know Pep is a great manager, but Mourinho is a different level

      I think they are both overrated. First of all, we need to get straight here the difference between Coach and Manager because I don't believe they are the same thing. A coach is like a teacher, someone in charge of the training of a person (athlete) or a team. A manager, someone who controls the resources and the expenditures for the betterment of the organization. As coaches, I don't think they are that great because they are really not teaching any of these player how to play football, maybe Guardiola a bit, but Mou? No player really improves his abilities under Mou. Mou teams play terribly, they are a waste of talent, no design plays from training. When I see a Mou team plays, I don't see anything from training; in that respect, Pep wins because his teams do things that have been practiced in training and you see the work, however, he still works with the best. As managers, they are ok because they manage the resources at their disposal to achieve success and I think in this department, they are equal because they are both winners.

Plus do you think coaching big teams is that easy, yes having big players in your squad is definetly an advantage, but you need to use them right and build an actual team out of it, and not all coaches have succeded with big teams. I think they are both good coaches, but personally I prefer Guardiola because I like his football more and he actually tries to develope and improve his players even for when he's gone from that team something that Mourinho hardly does.

There is a reason why everyone , even 5 year olds today talk about Maradona and not Rummenighe - Rumenighe won more titles and more world cups but yet everyone remembers Maradona because he CHANGED football as the world knew it.

However,changing a dogma(style everyone already knew and use) is what lives on. Rumenighe won Germany 2 world cups but Germans dont remember him today whereas EVERY kid in the world who knows the shape pf a ball would tell you about Maradona. That is because he INTRODUCED something new and different.

    Hypothetical question: who would win more titles and cups with an average squad of players? For me Mourinho all day long - he knows how to grind out 1:0 wins, “Finals are not for playing, they are for winning,” said Mourinho pretty much sums up all... He knows what it takes to win and he is going to do whatever it takes and can do it with lesser teams... For me, I cannot imagine Guardiola taking Inter Milan with a squad that Mourinho had to the finals let alone to win the whole thing... Here is Mourinho's eleven from 2010 Champions league final: Cesar, Maicon, Lucio, Samuel, Chivu, Zanetti, Sneijder, Cambiasso, Eto'o, Milito, Pandev
    can you tell me what happened to "stars" like Pandev, Chivu or Milito after he left? Did Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munchen and others try to sign them? No because they were not the best players in the world....

    People who comment about Oh Pep had Messi should really look at their life choices. When Pep took over, Ronaldinho was at the peak of his powers. Pep replaced him, making Messi the focal point of Barcelona's attack. Was Messi the GOAT at that point? No, he was a BRILLIANT PROSPECT but not the finished article. Pep turned him into the GOAT. It's brilliant how people conveniently forget this point. Nowadays, when I read the comment "Oh but Pep had Messi" I just move on because you can't argue with idiots. Both Mourinho and Pep are great managers no doubt, both have their qualities and their flaws. Preferring one over the other is just how you prefer the beautiful game to be played that's it. 1. The Actress's Inter Milan team was packed with star players. And he added Lucio, Sneijder and Eto'o for the Treble season. Since there was no one to challenge them they strolled to the Serie A title and Italian Cup. All they had to do was turn up for the UCL games. The only thing I'm wondering is how's Pep still alive, he's been up the pundits's a$$ for a year, how is he still breathing?!
    Jose has proven himself everywhere he went and he can work what any squad and make it successful. Pep on the other hand, unless he has the best of the best, he won't do much. This is shown in Bayern and City last year.

      Elleon Ken did mourinho win the champions league at madrid? How many times has he been sacked? You fail to mention mourinhos lows but only peps hmm I wonder why

    • @elleonken7599
      @elleonken7599 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jay Dot. I'm just doing my part, these pundits always talk about Pep as if he can't do nothing wrong. You can mention Jose's lows and I will mention Pep's, that's football. If you're talking about sacking, then why did Pep leave Bayern?! It's simple, he realized he can't win UCL there and just dominating in the league is nothing new to Bayern, so he decided to leave before getting sacked and go to a place where he can spend 50mil on defenders.
      Now that they got their old manager back, I'd love to see Bayern vs City in this year UCL, and I assure you that Pep will loose this match.

      I thoroughly disagree with you having the best players does not mean you'll get success year in year out , Ancelloti was sacked FFS, and Tbh he needs certain type of players to play in his system i surely can't see him doing with Zabaleta, Hart etc and he had to spend 50 Mil because Spurs were playing hardball. Today's Football market is an Inflationary one where even an average player would cost you more. Bayern sign managers on a 3 or 4 year basis if i'm not wrong and his contract wasn't renewed because we didn't win the CL as a Die Roten fan i have no regrets he improved the players and the team as a whole while he was there and i'm glad that Heynckes is back i think we're the underdogs if we get pitted against City.

    Mourinho's much better.
    .Won more trophies.
    .Won in Portugal, England, Italy (not at all easy if you are not an Italian Manager) and Spain
    .Won 2 Champions League trophies with two clubs that were never good in Europe at the time
    .Got UD Leira (a very small Portuguese club now in the second division) to a 5th place finish aka their highest ever finish.
    .Defeated a very good Celtic squad under Martin O'Neil in the UEFA Cup Final
    .Defeated Sir Alex Ferguson and a great Manchester United squad in the last 16 of the 03-04 Champions League with FC Porto
    .Thrashed Didier Deschamps AS Monaco 3-0 in the Final
    Came to England and instantly won the Premier League with Chelsea against all odds when Arsenal were the heavy favorites to retain it
    .Defended the title the next year. Something only Sir Alex Ferguson did at the time
    .Knocked out Pep Guardiola's Barcelona in the Semi Finals of the 09-10 Champions League with a stunning masterclass of defensive, counter-attacking football with a predominantly aging squad
    .Easily defeated LVG's Bayern Munich in the Final
    .Took big risks with Real Madrid that would pay off in the second season such as dropping Kaka (something almost no Manager at the time would have had the balls to do) for the younger, more talented Ozil.
    .Won Real Madrid's first La Liga in four years by a very convincing margin and wrapped up the title at Camp Nou against Pep Guardiola's Barcelona in the second El Classico of the season when Ronaldo scored to make it 1-2.
    . Came back to England and with in the second season delivered Chelsea a 4th Premier League title and its first in 5 years
    .Won two major trophies last season despite poor League form and a fairly average squad
    As for Pep Guardiola supposedly improving more players, here is a list of names Mourinho really improved.
    .The entire UD Leira squad that finished 5th the year before he took over FC Porto
    .The entire FC Porto squad. He is responsible for the likes of Deco and Carvalho having big names and becoming solid players after that incredible season.
    .Didier Droga and Peter Cech. Literally took them both to the next level upon signing them.
    .John Terry. Turned him into a solid, consistent defender that is now praised as one of the greatest defenders to ever grace the Premier League
    .Frank Lampard. Like what Pep Guardiola did with Messi, made him even better.
    .Ashely Cole. Turned him into the best LB with in a season
    .Maicon. Turned him into the best fullback in the World.
    .Diego Milito. Made him a deadly striker on the counter-attack despite his age.
    Wesley Sneijer. Severely improved him and turned him into the best player in the World (should have won the Balon Dor instead of Messi) in just one season when his career like Arjen Robben's was going nowhere at a mediocre Real Madrid.
    .Esteban Cambiasso. Turned him into one the best defensive midfielders at the time
    .Walter Samuel. Turned him into one the best defenders at the time
    .Turned Ozil into a super star at Real Madrid
    .Made Xabi Alonso even better than his Liverpool days
    .Is responsible for Varane's development into a solid defender
    .Turned Sergio Ramos into a solid CB when he had been a RB for most of his career up until that point. Kinda of like Jamie Carragher.
    .Got the very best out of Matic and Ivanovic
    .Had the balls to give Courtious number 1 GK spot over Peter Cech which payed off and unlike most Chelsea youngsters that get loaned out, didn't fail when he came back
    .Revived Cesc Fabregas's career when it was going nowhere at Barcelona
    .Is getting the best out of freaking Phil Jones atm and somehow turned him into a solid defender
    .Got the very best out of an aging Michael Carrick last season who for some reason most people severely underrated for so long. Even a lot of Manchester United fans never recognised his importance to that club.
    .Turned a young Eric Bailey into a solid defender and now easily one the best defenders in the World.
    Pep Guardiola is a brilliant Manager but his achievements very simply don't come close to Mourinho nor did he have work any where near as hard for them either.
