I have the first gen MSR7, i got it years ago in a clearance sale and it is a superb product. Build quality good for the price and it is proving to be a very durable headphone. I have found them to be very revealing and accurate, a bit bright but not piercingly so. I like them a lot and would recommend them to anyone looking for accurate and revealing headphones if they like a slightly bright sound.
At last, you are one of the only reviewers who I actually agree with on TH-cam. I’ve tried a lot of this equipment that you are reviewing, and you are spot on with your descriptions. I too am like you, not an objectivist or subjectivist, I just like what I like and use equipment accordingly. A lot of reviewers I have bought equipment off the back of and none of it sounds remotely as they described it to be. I think a lot of these reviewers actually need their ears tested and put the certificate up from the audiologist. Or completely use different terms for what they are sensing or perhaps they are just making up these imaginary things they hear in their head. Thankfully, I have had my hearing tested, and it is highly sensitive and perhaps one of my best senses. And I agree with you. Great reviews!
I am coming back to your video some four years after purchasing these. They have began to wear badly on the pads and headband last year. A zippered cover for the headband and new pads solved those issues easily. I will say that I tried the Yaxi pads for a few months, but I did not like the sound or comfort. I was able to acquire new stock pads from A-T's Parts Department shipped from Ohio in a few days. As for the cable, I was able to have Hart Audio make one terminating in A2DC. I have connected and disconnected the cable to pack for transport many times over the years, and the connection remains solid. Most reviews do note the difficulty of finding replacements, so I hope this might help someone. I much prefer the cloth covered cable to the cheap feeling stock cables. I have singled ended and 4.4mm interconnects, so it covers the same bases. I bought these for $140 from Amazon Warehouse in very good condition. They have been more than worth that purchase price.
They lost me at proprietary connectors 👎 You get bonus points for your comment on balanced. Ive been saying for years that balanced makes absolutely no difference to sound QUALITY but people just wont listen.

Your end game standards are low my friend ;) I personally after using M50X dont trust AT in comfort wise terms, im kind of interested in msr7b because they are balanced, cheap and portable. I had also AD500X for the price they were good and can recommend them as open HP, but again wing system is shit, same story with my K712 pro strap suspension I dislike. But at the end I always say that more hefty planar drivers its the place to look for end game, my closed back end game could be T60rp Argons as they blew away anything in ~1000$ range.

Very good review. I've owned the 1st generation. I've always wanted the blue special edition pair. Instead I went for the ATH SR-9 on sale for $249. I later added upgraded cabling to smooth the mid to upper bass bump. Which happily diminished after many hours of break in. I've always liked the MSRN 7. Even though the low sub bass was missing. The SR 9 seems to do better in that department after long periods of break-in. Sound stage could still be wider for my preference. But, at $250 who can really complain?
These look pretty good. I recently got to try the R-70x from Audio-technica at a friend's place. Man it sounds so neutral and tonally balanced. Awesome well-detailed review from you!!
@@1607Adi_Manz It is. Lol. Maybe he meant the M70x? Which has a noticeable hollow sound to the mids. Which doesn't bother me as much now, than when they were new. Break-in does apply with them.
The A2DC connectors were really annoying to unplug in the ATH-SR9 (sometimes it took me around 5 min to unplug... from one of the two earcups). I guess they continue this tradition on the MSR7b. It is also impossible to find replacement cables beyond Audio-Technica, which charges ridiculous prices for them. A2DC was the reason I sold the ATH-SR9 (their "Sound Reality" flagship).
I really liked that you finally released it! and I enjoyed the review very much, this analysis gives me a lot of references to understand your expressions on the rest of the reviews, so I feel more confident in making a step up choice, thou I'm very happy with my Msr7b's as you said they are simply comfortable to wear and listen. I've really no need for a reference studio/mastering headphone. Currently my "best" cans are Monolith M560 planars, driven by JDS Atom stack.
It sounds waaaaay better than ndh20. MSR7B is a great can. Mids and treble are excellent and source revealing also. Only the bass is slightly lacking IMO. (if you are a basshead)
Me personally, I'm very interested in THIS model. The whole A-T headphone line is a universe apart - look at their japanese market.Actually A-T''s line takes my breath away - would feel more than happy to have a few their top notch models.

It has less bass than the M50 but the bass is still deep and more treble which is bright but not piercing. It is relatively well balanced like the M50 and the sound quality is much better, so much so that it is difficult to switch back to the M50 after listening to it. The texture of the sound is always so realistic. The sound stage is much wider and the separation of the instruments is very well done. It also has much more details.
I haven't compared the m50x to the MSR7b but I have compared it to the MSR7 side by side. MSR7 is significantly more detailed and balanced while still retaining the bass despite being a bright headphone (though the MSR7b is slightly brighter) while m50x sounds extremely muddy in comparison which is significantly worse than even the cheaper m40x.
Got these in open box for 90 bucks. The guy who bought them didn't like the sound signature so he gave me a good deal on them. I love their sound signature personally

I recently bought some super plush pleather pads on aliexpress for these headphones and it seems like really helped with the sibilants and improved the soundstage. My original pads got flattened, sadly, but I very much prefer the Aliexpress pads, because they made the already comfortable MSR7B even more comfortable.
i use this headphone for about a year now. i am really happy with this headphone. they are light weight have great audio. especially if you want to listen to acoustic music or classical. cant say that i bought something bad. although i cant use the 4.4mm balanced cable that comes with it. so i cant comment on that. but overal the headphone is amazing. i bought it for 220 euros.

Think I wil pick some of these up off ebay. The few demo videos I've heard sound wonderful to my ears. I generally use open back but think some light weight closed backs could be handy to have and these coud become my fav.
Vastly different. The K371 is much warmer sounding, with a significant bass boost. The 371 has fairly undetailed bass, meaning sub-bass and mid-bass meld, and may sound boomy on some tracks that have a heavy emphasis on bass. The mids are thick, partly because of the bass bleed into that frequency, and partly because there's not a whole lot of separation among mid instruments. Vocals sound fairly natural and forgiving, however--so no sibilance push. The 371's treble is a bit elevated. The 7b has wider soundstage, provides significantly more detail and clarity, more neutral bass response, the vocals stand out more, and the treble has more clarity and detail.

@@ayubmaruf3074 The 7b is very different from all the other headphones you mentioned. It's pretty bright, but it does provide a considerable amount of detail and resolution. If you're sensitive to sibilance or treble, the 7b might not be for you. As for Crinacle...he has his own particular preferences, and he's entitled to say he doesn't like something.

An absolutely fantastic review. My M50x headphones have been my trusty sidekick since 2016, but I just found a great deal to get a pair of MSR7b for 99€. Seems like a nobrainer to be honest.

try the ath pro 5x , its like the less sibilant cheaper version of these but not a downgrade actually , its a very under rated overlooked headphone just as comfortable and more durable and wider stage , also i want to buy the neumanns but are those generally better than the msr7b or the lcd 1
The Neumann isn't better or worse, just different. Forget the Zeos hype behind the Neumann; it's false. It's a decent headphone, but has below-average soundstage, below-average detail, and a veiled sound signature. In contrast, the 7b has far more clarity, larger soundstage, and more detail retrieval. The LCD1 is about average in every respect, but it does have a slightly clearer sound, a bit more detail, than the Neumann.

The 7b has more detail and greater separation of vocals and instruments. Bass is a bit clearer on the 7b. Treble is more forward on the 7b. The Phoenix is noticeably less sibilant and has a warmer sound signature in comparison.
Having been disappointed by the HD560s and being the proud owner of an MSR7b do you think the R70X would be a good upgrade from the MSR7b? I want something more "neutral", "flat" with detail, clarity and spaciousness matching or superior to the MSRb. It is a toss up between this and the HD6XX series and I wonder if this is the one to go for.
I don't think of it as "upgrades" as that's such a personal preference. Technical performance of the R70x is not superior to the 7b. The 7b has more detail, clarity, and resolution. The R70x is closer to neutral, but is not flat. It does have wider soundstage than the 7b.

At $250. What are they compared to? What are they superior to? Your evaluation is fine. However, it's all opinion without references. I happen to enjoy A-T sound signature. I own 2 + 1 IEM LS300IS (that missed the A-T signature mark) ATH 70X, MSR7b, sold the 50X. Their Value to Sound are unapproachable. My references are Focal Utopia & Stellia..& my Grado RS2e (Which are now improved & less expensive RS2x) 1 important caveat I regret to admit about A-T proprietary A2DC is they are model proprietary! They can not be used across their line-up? Which is lame. Not a deal breaker. But, quite disappointing, non the less. I own their SR9 which has a longer cord. Can't be used on the MSR7b? SR9 (which I never enjoyed do to an annoying mid-upper bass bump with suppressed dynamics) They sound like they have built in compression? A regretful purchase.

It's probably better if I give you warm sounding and balanced options, as that's a broader list. In no particular order: Base Audio G12, Monolith M1070 and M1570, Beyerdynamic T1 2nd Gen, Philips Fidelio L2, ATH-R70x, Meze 99, V-Moda M100, Austrian Audio Hi-x50, and Denon AH-D1200. I'm sure there are plenty other options, but this should give you sufficient options to research. The D1200 has been around for a bit but there are few reviews; same issue with the G12 and X50.

Yes, I had the 1AM2 many years ago. It has a warmer sound signature--more bass, vocals not as clear as on the MSR7b, and the treble is less emphatic than on the MSR7b. It is not as clear or detailed as the MSR7b, and has narrower soundstage.

I'm watching your video on the rode 100 and they could be a good candidate (always on a medium-low range) I reject msr7b because of the sibilants (thanks to your explanations) the other alternator is akg 371 (I also own a sony z1r but I find it too tiring) I use a fiio k7
A lot is different. The 7b has more clarity, greater instrument separation, more treble extension, more detail. The 1070 has smoother mids without sibilance, more bass emphasis and warmer vocals that don’t stand out as much as on the 7b.
I have Hifiman HE400i ver 2020 and iFi Zen Dac v1. Let me tell you there is a significant difference between SE and balanced output on the Zen paired with my cans. Balanced Pentaccon 4.4 sounds way more louder and more open and detailed than SE. I use an Meze Audio 4.4 balanced cable. So...what are you talking about?
There is no difference in sound signature or clarity between single ended and balanced. All you’re hearing is the additional power as it affects the drivers of your particular headphones.
Amp. Interfaces usually have high output impedance. If you already have an interface, try it and see if you like the performance. No point in spending money if your current gear works with this headphone

I’ve never used it. However, I also don’t like to label products as “the best”. If it has some features you want and is affordable to you, then you’ll have to decide if it’s the best product you’ve used. I try not to comment about this type of question.

Hi, are there any headphone recommendation for music mixing at home? it can be closed or semi or full open headphone, i can isolate my working space at home so it doesn't matter. You can use any headphone for mixing as long as you understand it’s sound signature and what you want the end result to sound like. Professionals tend to use the Sony MDR 7506 and V6, as well as the ATH M40x. If you want your mix to sound similar to the Harman Curve, then the K371 is one of very few options. The Monoprice HR5 and OneOdio Studio Headphones are also fairly good headphones with a balanced sound signature.

It's vastly different. The Meze have a far warmer, less detailed, sound signature. Vocals are more sibilant on the MSR7b, and it has much more clarity throughout the frequency range.

You have a lot of options, all with different sound signatures and builds, etc. Look into these and you may find one that you may be interested it. And, there's probably many others I'm not currently thinking of.

These headphones thave got to be the most sibilant headphones...kinda a trend with AT in all their headphones. I had this and couldn't stand it...I think I also lost a bit of hearing on it as well trying to make it work...they are that bright. No Bass, no texture, no detail...just shrilly highs. It's like those cheap tweeters you fit in the car and think suddenly your system has gotten more clearer. A complete waste of money...I should know...I lost money on this!

@@haimkeissy sorry for the late replay. but yes they are good for metal. all i listen to is mostly black metal through my phone and it sounds amazing. any kind of black metal that is. so for any kind of "normal" metal they are good as well. powermetal sounds amazing atmospheric sounds amazing everything sounds amazing metal wise.

Think I wil pick some of these up off ebay. The few demo videos I've heard sound wonderful to my ears. I generally use open back but think some light weight closed backs could be handy to have and these coud become my fav.

In short, how you think they compare to the AKG K371?
Vastly different. The K371 is much warmer sounding, with a significant bass boost. The 371 has fairly undetailed bass, meaning sub-bass and mid-bass meld, and may sound boomy on some tracks that have a heavy emphasis on bass. The mids are thick, partly because of the bass bleed into that frequency, and partly because there's not a whole lot of separation among mid instruments. Vocals sound fairly natural and forgiving, however--so no sibilance push. The 371's treble is a bit elevated.
The 7b has wider soundstage, provides significantly more detail and clarity, more neutral bass response, the vocals stand out more, and the treble has more clarity and detail.

My other possible choices include k371, shure srh840, sennheiser hd 569, and maybe something around 200$. Would you recommend msr7b?
@@ayubmaruf3074 The 7b is very different from all the other headphones you mentioned. It's pretty bright, but it does provide a considerable amount of detail and resolution. If you're sensitive to sibilance or treble, the 7b might not be for you.
As for Crinacle...he has his own particular preferences, and he's entitled to say he doesn't like something.

try the ath pro 5x , its like the less sibilant cheaper version of these but not a downgrade actually , its a very under rated overlooked headphone just as comfortable and more durable and wider stage , also i want to buy the neumanns but are those generally better than the msr7b or the lcd 1
The Neumann isn't better or worse, just different. Forget the Zeos hype behind the Neumann; it's false. It's a decent headphone, but has below-average soundstage, below-average detail, and a veiled sound signature. In contrast, the 7b has far more clarity, larger soundstage, and more detail retrieval. The LCD1 is about average in every respect, but it does have a slightly clearer sound, a bit more detail, than the Neumann.

How would you compare these to the Sivga Phoenix? Those appear to be about the same price point.
The 7b has more detail and greater separation of vocals and instruments. Bass is a bit clearer on the 7b. Treble is more forward on the 7b. The Phoenix is noticeably less sibilant and has a warmer sound signature in comparison.

Having been disappointed by the HD560s and being the proud owner of an MSR7b do you think the R70X would be a good upgrade from the MSR7b?
I want something more "neutral", "flat" with detail, clarity and spaciousness matching or superior to the MSRb.
It is a toss up between this and the HD6XX series and I wonder if this is the one to go for.
I don't think of it as "upgrades" as that's such a personal preference. Technical performance of the R70x is not superior to the 7b. The 7b has more detail, clarity, and resolution. The R70x is closer to neutral, but is not flat. It does have wider soundstage than the 7b.

I happen to enjoy A-T sound signature. I own 2 + 1 IEM
LS300IS (that missed the A-T signature mark) ATH 70X, MSR7b, sold the 50X.
Their Value to Sound are unapproachable.
My references are Focal Utopia & Stellia..& my Grado RS2e (Which are now improved & less expensive RS2x)
1 important caveat I regret to admit about A-T proprietary A2DC is they are model proprietary! They can not be used across their line-up? Which is lame. Not a deal breaker. But, quite disappointing, non the less.
I own their SR9 which has a longer cord. Can't be used on the MSR7b?
SR9 (which I never enjoyed do to an annoying mid-upper bass bump with suppressed dynamics) They sound like they have built in compression? A regretful purchase.

It's probably better if I give you warm sounding and balanced options, as that's a broader list. In no particular order: Base Audio G12, Monolith M1070 and M1570, Beyerdynamic T1 2nd Gen, Philips Fidelio L2, ATH-R70x, Meze 99, V-Moda M100, Austrian Audio Hi-x50, and Denon AH-D1200. I'm sure there are plenty other options, but this should give you sufficient options to research. The D1200 has been around for a bit but there are few reviews; same issue with the G12 and X50.

Yes, I had the 1AM2 many years ago. It has a warmer sound signature--more bass, vocals not as clear as on the MSR7b, and the treble is less emphatic than on the MSR7b. It is not as clear or detailed as the MSR7b, and has narrower soundstage.

I'm watching your video on the rode 100 and they could be a good candidate (always on a medium-low range) I reject msr7b because of the sibilants (thanks to your explanations) the other alternator is akg 371 (I also own a sony z1r but I find it too tiring)

A lot is different. The 7b has more clarity, greater instrument separation, more treble extension, more detail. The 1070 has smoother mids without sibilance, more bass emphasis and warmer vocals that don’t stand out as much as on the 7b.

Yes. The mere fact that a headphone is open back doesn't mean it has wide soundstage, or that it is always wider than a closed back headphone.
I have Hifiman HE400i ver 2020 and iFi Zen Dac v1. Let me tell you there is a significant difference between SE and balanced output on the Zen paired with my cans. Balanced Pentaccon 4.4 sounds way more louder and more open and detailed than SE. I use an Meze Audio 4.4 balanced cable. So...what are you talking about?
There is no difference in sound signature or clarity between single ended and balanced. All you’re hearing is the additional power as it affects the drivers of your particular headphones.

Amp. Interfaces usually have high output impedance. If you already have an interface, try it and see if you like the performance. No point in spending money if your current gear works with this headphone

Hi, are there any headphone recommendation for music mixing at home? it can be closed or semi or full open headphone, i can isolate my working space at home so it doesn't matter. You can use any headphone for mixing as long as you understand it’s sound signature and what you want the end result to sound like. Professionals tend to use the Sony MDR 7506 and V6, as well as the ATH M40x. If you want your mix to sound similar to the Harman Curve, then the K371 is one of very few options. The Monoprice HR5 and OneOdio Studio Headphones are also fairly good headphones with a balanced sound signature.

You have a lot of options, all with different sound signatures and builds, etc. Look into these and you may find one that you may be interested it. And, there's probably many others I'm not currently thinking of.

These headphones thave got to be the most sibilant headphones...kinda a trend with AT in all their headphones. I had this and couldn't stand it...I think I also lost a bit of hearing on it as well trying to make it work...they are that bright. No Bass, no texture, no detail...just shrilly highs. It's like those cheap tweeters you fit in the car and think suddenly your system has gotten more clearer. A complete waste of money...I should know...I lost money on this!
