    My gearbox keeps shifting gears with no judder, bangs, slips, jerks for 7 years now.
    I shift gears myself.
    I like systems that old cars like Citroen Dyane had - centrifugal clutch. You do not need clutch pedal, shifts with no issues and it is fully mechanical. Great for traffic jams.

    Had a dual clutch in my old Golf R, and my wife’s old Seat Leon and both were great. Just need to make sure the oil’s changed every 30k miles, manufacturer says 40k, I wouldn’t take the risk especially if it’s used in urban areas = lots of gear changes.

    The marketing BS behind the DCT was something. People were so wowed by the idea of a transmission that had multiple automated clutches, but they never stop to realize that the tradition automatic transmission has had multiple automated clutches forever. In fact, one for every gear. That tells you just how clueless people in the car world can be.

  • @GTWVU

    Couldn’t get a manual in my S3 since my wife only drives automatics. The DCT is the perfect solution for us to split the difference. Apparently the new torque-converters from the high end are now suppose to be just as quick to be in the right gear based on driving modes...but what’s the fun in that?

    Coming from a BMW F30 and G20, both using 8 speed ZF gearbox and now to an A7 s-tronic gearbox, the standard autos are so much more usable, the gear changes are more intuitive and acceleration is instantaneous with the torque converter locking mechanism. With a DCT, you suffer with the difficulty of the gearbox guessing which gear you want next, if it decides incorrectly, you end up with 1-2 seconds of lag before you feel acceleration. The biggest issue is acceleration from standing, once you let off the brake the car needs about 1 second to engage a gear before you get drive, this leaves you timing gaps in traffic, the worse part is pulling out of busy junctions and the gearbox isn't responding. For everyday driving and none super cars, they really do not have a place anymore in my opinion.

  • @unknownunknowns

    I wonder if it’s because DCTs have more moving parts than a torque converter so they require more maintenance.

    I was considering a VW Passat TDI in 2013. I test drove one and really enjoyed it on the highway and the windy Palisades Parkway. However in Manhattan stop and go driving it was jittery and shuttered. I ended up buying a mint condition, one-owner SAAB 9-5 with a 5-speed Aisin slushbox with paddle shifters. It's pretty much bulletproof.
    Also, DCT's are ridiculously expensive to fix and rebuild.

    I had a 2012 Focus. The transmission wasn't that bad. It shifts quickly and is good on gas 40+mpg avg 75mph. I bought the extended warranty too which is quite cheap, ~$1k for 3 years bumper-to-bumper for a car with 60k miles on the clock, but sold the car anyways because I wanted to upgrade.

    I got ride of my 2016 focus because of those powershift issues. It was a lease and I had plans buy out the car but the shuddering from 1- 2 second gear was not a feeling I liked. It always felt like the bar was broken in some way. If you put you foot down, it does it job pretty darn well but i cant go flat out driving though neighborhoods and state highways so it is Ford problem now.

    I love DCT - have a VW Tiguan DSG in the family, and it's a fantastic transmission. Borrowed a friend's C240 with a 5G-Tronic transmission the other day and I was not impressed. Drove a Jaguar XF with the 8-speed ZF torque converter automatic as a courtesy car, however, and that was almost as good as the DSG. Torque converter automatics have really come a long way in the past decade.

    There are so many advantages to a DCT (like fewer parts, which would after a few decades mean lower cost), however, their Achilles heel is bumper to bumper, stop and go traffic, particularly on an incline. The conventional automatic shines under these conditions, whereas the DCT (if not adjusted and engineered perfectly-which is where we're at today), shimmies its way up the hill at walking speed, while overheating the clutches. If only a small fraction of cars experience this condition on a regular basis, it's enough to make nobody want one.

    I drove a fiat with what must have been a dual clutch automatic manual transmission and it was just awful. I’d put my foot down to try and take off in a hurry to merge into traffic and the car would sit there for sometimes one full second before it even started moving.
    Not to mention, the future of cars is fully electric and they don’t even need transmissions.

    There’s a reason why auto makers are going back to conventional autos and abandoning dual-clutch autos. The transmissions are slow to respond off the line, loud, and jerky during slow speed situations. The last 2 vehicles I had were dual clutches. I didn’t notice how jerky it was until I drove a conventional auto the other day. I pulled up to spot where the front of the car was facing the building going slightly uphill. Wanted to move up a foot or so and was giving it very light dabs of throttle. Then I noticed that I didn’t need to do that with a conventional auto. I just gave it a little gas, kept it there, and the car creeped forward with no drama evenly. Compare that with the dual-clutch trans and it was a completely different experience. The Dual-Clutch transmission still has a clutch that needs to be slipped in order to engage gears. It’s the same process that you would do with your left foot on a manual car, except instead of the clutch being controlled by your foot as with a conventional auto, the clutch is controlled mechanically by a computer. And that is where it messes up. The engagement point is inconsistent. The car just gooses the gas for you and slips the clutch. So even if you have the gas down at a consistent level, you will hear (and feel) the car going off and on the gas slipping the clutch for you. It’s unnerving because you don’t know when it will grab completely and fully engage 1st gear. This doesn’t make for accidents. It just makes smooth driving in parking lot situations next to impossible. You end up getting used to it and adjusting your driving style accordingly. But it will always be inconsistent. You can give it a stab of gas and just get enough clutch slippage enabling you to creep forward, or that same stab of gas can cause full engagement of 1st gear causing the car to leap forward and scaring the heck out of you in the process.
    I think the main issue is that the clutch and transmission doesn’t utilize any vehicle incline sensors. The same about clutch slippage required to get the car engaged in gear on a level surface, should not be the same amount of slippage needed to get the car going uphill. The Dual-Clutch Trans doesn’t know the difference. Your right foot has to know the difference and even then it isn’t as consistent as say normal clutch engagement with a manual using your foot. They’re were tons of instances where I thought If I had the clutch pedal under my foot, that I could have done a smoother job, albeit with more clutch slippage.

    I prefer the DCT, DSG over a slushbox. Reason being is I like how it feels. I don’t mind it not being so smooth I can’t even feel the shift. I hate CVTs I hate how smooth it is. My M3 has a DCT and I can’t complain.

      Matthew Jackson They’re smoother because they can find the exact ‘gear’ because of the design. But the downsides are the shifts are slower and they’re not built for high torque. If they were Nissan would have used it in the GTR, but went with the dual clutch. You won’t see a normal CVT outside of lower power cars

      Naughtysauce Sorry I should have added the year in my comment. Mines a 2017. What I will say though is that when the car is cold, it can be a LITTLE loud, but still runs totally smooth. Like for example if you're driving when it's 25 degrees out and you're not at full operating temp, you can hear the clutches disengage a little, but that's really it, still smooth, not jerky, etc. Then when the car warms up to operating temp it's smooth like butter.
      Driving in traffic is totally fine, I am not sure what people mean when they say it's a nightmare, in my experience it's been great. The car is obviously still pretty new but I can't really see it getting worse. Unless they do, you might be able to answer that one.
      But I have to say, the 17 Mk7's are nicely refined. Don't know about the 7.5's though, I know it's a 7 speed DSG now...

    • @flopkin
      @flopkin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Naughtysauce My theory is that the 17 DSG's have perfected the 6 speed DSG throughout the years. They've been around for a while now. But now they're on to a 7 speed, so there could be some problems with that one I suppose.

    My preference of transmission would be Manual -> Dual Clutch -> CVT -> TQ-based. However, the TQ-based transmissions like the ZF boxes can handle so much torque that the other types can't! With the option to add gears like Billy Mays, it's just so hard to say no to TQ-based transmissions. Another thing is automated driving, where TQ-based transmission can be so smooth yet programmable to skip gears like a high school senior, no wonder they hold so much promise. The upshot is that the Manual camp and the TQ-based camp are holding firm in their preference, with the other camps having to give way due to no particular passion or utility advantage.

    True words. Try to drive a two litre VW Diesel engine with DCT - It's just bad. Unless you don't reconfigure it's not really smooth and shifts too early. There is basically no comfort during the ride.
    My car has a torque converter and I will stay with the system, because it just smooth and easy. Not so indirect like CVT and by the possibility to shift by myself fast enough.

    Realistically with more auto manufacturers wanting to get better fuel economy even if the EPA is not requiring it especially when it is a car that I already is aimed at trying to be more of an economy car and get better fuel economy the CVT transmission is the more popular style of transmission over the torque converter transmission I've driven and owned many vehicles that have CVT transmissions and I think they are great they run wonderfully and realistically you can actually get better performance out of a CVT transmission then you can a multi gear transmission of any sort anymore even high variant 6-speed manual or 10-speed automatics because you can get the car up into its peak horsepower more quickly and let it sit there throughout its entire acceleration Subaru ran a CVT Transmission in the WRX for a few years and it just fell out a popularity cuz the type of people buy those cars either want a manual transmission or they want an actual multi Gear transmission not a CVT but if manufacturers like General Motors Ford and Dodge Chrysler built tougher CVT transmissions that can handle lots of horsepower and torque from a car we would be more likely to see Corvettes Mustangs Camaros Chargers with CVT transmissions even just the year of the switch over using the same engine and body and just changing the CVT transmission would probably shave a little bit of time off of the acceleration on the CVT Transmission Car versus the multi speed gearbox.

    This makes me want to have a manual transmission. I feel like manual cars are going to be collector cars in the next 30 years since they won't exist.

      Maybe in the US, in Europe, we still have the majority of manual, especially for smaller size cars.

    I can tell you more than 5 negative on my VW double clutch but only 1 positive. All I can say is that I would never buy that thing again. Very disappointed

    DCT are unnecessarily complicated. a sporty beefy automatic is simpler, lighter, stronger, more reliable, and with the right programming shift faster. DCT will eventually die out.

      @Mladjasmilic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mister Mood Actually, DCT is simplest automatic solution.
      It has actuator for each gear and 2 clutches. That's it.
      Slush box has torque converter, oil pump, brake bans for each mode of it's many planetary gears and complex hydraulics.

      @AkioWasRight 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mladen Milić is correct, but simple don't mean more reliable. A torque converter inherently reduces stresses in the transmission, making it more reliable.

    We had a diesel VW Jetta Wagon with the dual clutch transmission. I Loved the precise and quick shift, but it had one fault. If I smoked cigarettes I would have had enough time to finish one when shifting from reverse to drive. I had to plan backing out of my driveway and shifting into drive so I wouldn't have cars slamming on their brakes to give my car time to think about its shift. Kinda scary!

    Unfortunately, no. Especially in Hyundai's new hybrids.
    Feeble DCTs + electric motors? Expect hard, messy and expensive transmission and clutch failures.

    CVTs. Cheaper to make and warrant. The average customer just wants to go. Hell, these next generations don't even want to drive.

    Dual clutches suck. The PDK in my Panamera is a total pile of junk. They should have stayed with the tiptronics and not just in the hybrid

      cedrick305 The DCT is a uniquely bad transmission (fortunately mine only needed a software update but others have had much worse luck). The Fusion and Escape which use traditional automatics drive much better.

      Other than the F-150 and the Ford GT that’s about it, the Mustang doesn’t count because it’s driver run over people at cars and coffee.
