I admire and am in awe of Pat McGrath the person and I ADORE Pat McGrath Labs the brand. I have all the motherships and probably 75-80% of all of her offerings… and I agree with everything you said.
I truly love the quality of her brand and the innovation. But you are so right, something feels off lately. I say this because I care, not because I don’t love the brand.
Oddly enough, I think the repeat shades are her attempt at playing to the consumer. I think it probably works-just not for people like many of us who are make up and brand enthusiasts.
To me, her most boring Star Wars quint was The Golden One. They were shades I have 5 times over from her. I wanted the other 2 quints. But… The Golden One was the first quint to sell out. I was shocked by that. At the same time…maybe not so shocked. I think for those of us who have most of her line-yes, it was the boring quint--but for people who don’t think a lot about makeup day to day, those are the shades they want.
I think you nailed it in that she needs to find a way to cater to both groups. I’m sure that’s a fine line to try to straddle, but she’s done it in the past. I think the balance is off right now. I hope it can return. I think if she released a Mothership with non-rosy/pink mattes and releases bronzers in 2023 that would go a long way to righting the ship.
I also wonder how much ingredient sourcing issues changes things. Like are we not getting a baked shades mothership because raw ingredient sourcing would make that difficult?
But the worst thing I can imagine is her selling the brand. It would be the end of all we still love about it. Just the thought of that makes me shiver 😱

I cannot agree with you more about everything you said. I too was super shocked about the golden quint being the one to sell out but it makes a good point that thats what sells for her. And agree if she can bring a non rosy/gold mothership and bronzers I'd be soooo happy! haha 💗💗💗
You’re so sweet… that holiday greeting 🥺. It can be and is a rough time for so many of us. Thank you for saying all of that and sending lots of love to your family. It’s so hard.
The look: stunning. Love that red on you.
The brand: I don’t think the brand is in trouble, exactly. Pat became a billionaire last year because of this brand, so I don’t think it’s hurting. The constant sales? Not many of us were ever paying full price for Pat’s stuff and the economy is rough right now. Makeup is soooo highly marked up. They’re still making bank. She priced her palettes too high out of the gate but it’s hard to change that now other than running sales. I think there’s a huge disconnect between what the stans and collectors want and what her average buyer wants. Pretty sure Divine Rose I is still her biggest seller. She did give us quads of all special shades in 2018. I have one and it’s my all time favorite palette. But they didn’t move. She finally moved the last quad left during Black Friday by giving it away as a gift with purchase. It’s still available on US Sephora. Even the coolest one didn’t sell out until 2021. So I think she might hesitate to do that again when that limited edition took 4 years to sell out. There are a few of us magpies that want all the special shades, but the majority of the public seems to want soft roses and golds. She makes more money off the general public and I think takes for granted that the collectors are going to collect. I hope she finds a way to provide for both camps. I’ll always admire her artistry, but right now I’m bored by the releases. God what I would give to be able to customize a palette.

I agree about Pat. I think she saw how well Divine Rose appealed to more typical makeup users and decided to play it safe by continuing to make more neutral and pink palettes. It’s a shame because there’s only so many shades of brown and dusky pink I can use.
I really appreciate your honesty and completely agree about her releases! As beautiful as her motherships are, the recent ones feel uninspired compared to the first few. I understand catering to the bigger crowd but I really hope we get a unique color story soon. And I really want more blushes! Happy holidays!

I hope you ended up having a good holiday. Or as good as is possible now. I’ve also experienced several significant losses, and the holidays can be so hard. I TRY to cherish every good moment when they come now, but it’s still hard.

Dogs truly do bring so much joy. My dog means the world to me and when I stop by my parents house I always bring her because they adore her as well and then her doggy boyfriend is one of their dogs so it’s just a good old dog time haha. But she really just is the center of attention and of she’s not she will make herself the center of attention. She will talk to you you or just completely climb on top of you with all 65 pounds of herself lol.
They really do. We totally don't deserve dogs in this world, they are so precious. Hahaha I love this for her! 💗💗💗
I absolutely loved this look, you look like Snow White in it. And oh gosh, I didn’t know about those PMGL rumors…. It also makes me quite concerned, and we completely eye to eye on this matter. Each and every time she announces that something new’s coming everybody gets so freaking excited, including me, and lately I’ve been feeling underwhelmed. And as you said, people have been asking for certain key products for such a long time and we end up not getting them, but a bunch of same shades in different collections instead. She’s been expanding her formula range which is quite nice, and I know there’s so much more to a business than meets the eye, I’m still concerned though hahaha you rock as always, xx ❤
I appreciate the sale I just ordered the moonlit Seduction mothership. I really hope that she’s not closing down. I only have 2 other motherships. Midnight Sun & Bronze Seduction.

What a pretty look and the red lip, gives Snow white vibes 😍 a princess for sure! I really hope Pat's business isn't in trouble. I have actually enjoyed alot of the newer releases like the new mega mothership with colorful mattes. I just wish the shimmers were more special in that palette. But I love color. I love a good nuetral too, and that seems to be what sells in her product, seeing that the Golden One Star Wars quint was the first to sell out. I just feel if she does a release she brings a little color and a little nuetral when introducing a new collection for those who love one or the other. She did have quads in the special shades in 2018 ( I have all of them) and they are stunning! But for some.reason they didn't sell. Maybe she is just producing too much and maybe needs to scale back on what she keeps on hand? And I do think she needs to figure out new shades other than mauve and pinky tones along with golds in every palette. How about a matte olive or mustard, or cool toned taupy mattes and maybe a deep grungy green, navy matte? Also, bring back the baked shades in her Motherships. And I agree, bronzers and a new foundation and concealer formula would be great. I love her foundation but I prefer a little more coverage. We will see what 2023 brings.

I honestly don't think she is going anywhere but I do hope we get some new color stories and products. And yes to the tones you suggested! I would die for a mustard matte from her haha 💗💗💗

I really enjoy the looks that you create and this one is lovely. I've only started buying Pat McGrath this year and I'm already finding that I have to be careful not to duplicate eyeshadow colours when new products come out. Having said that, I'm so happy with each item I've ordered. I can see that there are other products that could be offered and I agree about bringing out new colour stories and offering quads or motherships that are just special shades would be a great idea. Hoping that the brand isn't in trouble as it would be such a shame. I've ordered Sith Seduction because I really wanted an olive shade. Wishing you a lovely Christmas! 🎄x
I LOVE Pat McGrath but I’m needing something different. I don’t mind the pink shades (they’re at least kind of different) I loved the bridgerton collection… but I’m ready for something other than gold.

I did find you via your PML content. I don’t think you were nearly as negative about the brand as you think you were, don’t fret! I know there’s been chatter and worry amongst consumers re: what feels like her constant sales. I personally wondered if it was more of a clear out of existing inventory to make way for new products in response to the feedback from the customers. PML is a well established brand with a very loyal customer base (you and I included!) that I’m not sure it will be going anywhere, but in this economic climate who knows!? I guess a buy out is a possibility and that could also explain the somewhat more lacklustre innovation of late…who knows! We may all be wrong and actually Pat herself is just having a tough time at the moment but will come back stronger and more enthused in 2023!
Also, I agree with you that I enjoy the Bridgeton palette! I have the first one and didn’t feel the need for the second one as it felt a bit like the first but with Gigabyte added in…which I already have. I wore my Bridgeton palette just yesterday and was super pleased with the look :)

I just got mine this morning and Elson 2 is definitely orange red. Beautiful, very vibrant but orange red. If you looking for more like blue undertone true red that would be Elson.

This look is perfection. Elson 2 is a glorious red. 😍 I appreciate your getting into the conversation about PML as a brand. I’m such a fan of her makeup (8 motherships, 30+ lipsticks, etc). I’m not a collector, though, just a fan of the product quality and Vision. I think Moonlit Seduction is a masterpiece but that’s about it for the year. I picked up the Lunar Allure highlighter.
I think she’s a little off track because Divine Rose went viral and she chased that moment too far down the path.
The Star Wars release feels like a vehicle to move unpopular product and that’s about it.
I would love for the releases to slow down and for the focus to be back on what she does best-make drop dead gorgeous makeup for every kind of day.

Maybe it really hit them during the pandemic? Cause that's when they kept having sales. This year was crazy. It was one sale after the other though that time there was a glitch was great for me cause I got what I wanted for a lower price 🤭 But you're right. She needs to make the color stories more innovative than what she has now. Her first ones had such variety. And maybe bronzers are coming!! 🤞🏼
P.s. I just got the foundation. Didn't do homework and didn't know it had coconut D: I hope it doesn't break me out T.T
Aw thank you! And yeah, it might have for sure. I imagine the cost of her ingredients and packaging would be super high too and then sales would have been lower due to no one having any money. I placed my order in November. I got delivered a parcel for different person. With her personal info. And what was inside was completely different products from her order slip.
I sent a message to CS and no reply. I was planning to give the lipsticks to my friends for Christmas present. I had to rush to go buy replacement.
I still haven’t received my order, I sent email to CS but no response at all yet.
Oh wow that is so bad! Getting the wrong products is one thing but getting someone else's personal details is horrendous! I hope they get back to you soon and it all gets sorted for you 💗💗

That’s so awful! My order also only came with 2 products while I ordered and paid for 3. I contacted the customer service 3 times now but there has been no response. It’s very disappointing as the money wont be refunded it seems 😢
I don't know, I don't really love the products I have tried from the brand, but for some reason it does keep pulling me in. Maybe it's because all the hype and the love the brand gets. But my experience with the products have not been great. I own the Mothership five, don't love it as much as I thought I would. I have last years holiday palette, same thing. Bought the concealer in a shade that's too yellow, so didn't love that either. And I have owned and decluttered a lipstick, of which the cap didn't close all the way, and for that kind of money, that's so annoying. Didn't love the color as much either.
Yet, this Mothership midnight sun is still calling my name! But I am a bit scared for another disappointment.
Oh wait, I also own that very small white plastic palette with five shimmers. I do love that one.

I too have been feeling a little anti Pat this year. Her launches have lost that excitement they once had. Maybe its because we all have so much makeup now that they don't feel as special anymore.

Her brand has gotten incredibly repetitive and I rarely get excited when new products drop. I have all the mothership palettes, and I love the quality, but pink and gold are 2 colors I reach for the least, and she has oversaturated her line with them.

Beautiful as per usual. I enjoy her products as well, but I don't think she caters to us, regular folks. I fill her brand caters to more high-dollar people.
