Ali is lost because Korean isn’t his native language. So when he asks what something simple is, he’s really asking what the Korean word means. So, he didn’t understand the Korean words for boot camp.
Yeah. The subs & dub make it seem like he doesn’t understand basic concepts (multiple times) when in actuality he just doesn’t know the Korean word for the thing that was just used. He’s not dumb, he’s just not totally fluent in Korean and doesn’t know words that might not come up in everyday conversation.
@@YankeeBlues21 It tripped me up in a later episode like, “Why wouldn’t he know what this means,” and then it hit me he didn’t recognize the word. And I’ve been learning Korean for three years and didn’t know the word either. 😭
@@NinaPB “Even and odd”, right? For me that’s where it became clear that he just didn’t know the Korean words for things. Cause the first time, it’s “boot camp” and I’m like, “okay, maybe that’s just not a colloquialism they use in Pakistan”. But then during the cookie game he says “daira” (Urdu for “circle”) and draws a circle in the air, and needs to be told “circle”, which I was reminded of during the later “what’s even and odd?” moment. It seems weird because, whether we’re watching the show with subs or dubs, we’re processing the dialogue in our own language, but he’s simply asking “what was that word you just said?” I wish they’d have made it clearer in the translation to make him seem less unintelligent and more that he just isn’t a native Korean speaker
1. Ali is a Pakistani immigrant working in Korea. He speaks Korean to assimilate, but he wouldn't know abt all the types of Korean childhood games, played by locals growing up. 2. The "orphan" boy is the girl (Sae-byeok) 's younger brother. They're not orphans. They're North Koreans who escaped to live in South Korea. As explained in ep2, her motive of joining the game is bc she needs the money to bring their parents into South Korea. And the money she pickpocketed from the gambling dude, was cheated out of her. Ep 2 showed how she's motivated bc she made a promise to her brother to unite their family again. 3. Also, if you have Eng sub option, it's a better translation and transcription. Apparently, the Eng CC misses a lot of nuance and changes the translation slightly.
@@liri100000 what are you talking about? He's literally an immigrant. Knowing the games or just recognizing them will definitely help in making better decisions (like choosing a triangle instead of an umbrella for example) and no one said he was forced to do anything. Ali may speak korean but he's still unfamiliar with korean culture and some words that's why he gets confused sometimes especially with korean traditional children games..that's why sangwoo offered to help him in the future
Great review! It's a stressful show 😩😂Remember, Korean wouldn't be Ali's first language so he might not know what all words mean and he wouldn't have played Korean games as a child. So he's not dumb, he just haven't been in the country that long!
Im not from Korea or the US. I’ve played red light green light and rope pulling but none of those other. I’ve had marbles as a kid but I didn’t use them for much I think. And cookies? Is that really a game or was it used but with different tools?

that gta reference was gold. and he switched his id with the guy so that if they found a body they wouldnt expect an intruder because they wouldnt know who he was. instead of thinking it was one of their guys they would assume its a dead cop.
The orphan is her brother. The translation is not really on point, but she said ''sis will take care of it''. She put her brother in orphanage where you can also put children for temporary foster care.
Ali ( the Pakistan man) even though speaks Korean, it not costumed to Korean culture, like the games played by as kids. I also believe he grew up in Pakistan, and probably didn’t get much of an academic education like the rest of them

the cop put his own badge on the dead body that he threw overboard. the guy he killed in the red outfit was not the police. he's trying to make them think that this guy isnt part of them in case they find his body.
Your comment on the detective being similar to Joseph Gordon-Levitt in "The Dark Knight Rises" is genuinely astute. As soon as you said it, it was like being hit with a "YES sledgehammer" Also grading Episode two 10/10 is really going to ruin your scoring system once Episode six rolls around.
The woman who used the lighter--they know she is using it. There's no way they wouldnt see it, but they just let her be because it's not really against the rules. The instruction was to only cut the piece out. They didnt say you could only use the pin,so it would really be up to your strategy. It's the same thing as using your tongue. They just let him be because again,as long as you cut the piece out,you pass.
I thought they didn't see her use the lighter she was hiding under the slide. The cameras couldn't see her so she just had to hide it from the guards in masks. They don't have the best peripheral vision and there were lots of players to try to monitor. You could be right though because I don't know how snake tatoo would have hid the lighter after she passed it to him.
That crazy lady from “the bathroom”, is a con-artist. She just wants to side with the toughest crowd so she can secure herself a spot in the next game.

Ali is also there because he's an immigrant worker who was never paid (which happens a lot to immigrant workers). He got enough to get his family out when he took his boss's money, but not enough to sustain them wherever they are/were going. They aren't just gamblers.
