I watch your videos religiously because am going to try to replicate your farming methods in my country of origin. Am definitely going to use the woven fabric for weed control, and also the drip irrigation system to water my crops year around. Thank you and your family for posting and sharing. knowledge
I never had luck with Brandywine in kansas but here in NW Missouri, I had great tomatoes from one called Better Brandy, I believe. Big slicers and lots if them. Oddly, I've never had much luck with her star or celebrity. My favorite is an heirloom big slicer called Delicious. Try it for fresh eating.
I picked up a black brandywine tomato at Baker’s Creek on Monday too! I’ve grown the regular brandywine variety for quite a while and love the flavor! Of course mine will be in a pot this year since we are still waiting for our homestead here in SW Missouri!
i tried this method for first time. perhaps our holes weren't big enough because i found it difficult to get the hole dug without caving back in and hard to get it deep enough for plant. damaged my first plant. but i didn't give up! planted one seed in each hole for beans and peas also. excited to see if this no weed method works...my husband has doubts
You will Love the Brandywine Tomato's all of the heirloom tomatoes are great, so much more flavor. They may not look pretty (cracked and catfaced) but they taste great. Remember if you like them, save the seed, unlike the hybirds they are true to seed and you can grow them next year from this years seed. Great for off griders/homesteaders
In additional to the rabbit pellets, I add crushed egg shells to the hole when planting tomatoes to help with blossom end rot. With chickens and rabbits on site these amendments are free even if they do nothing.
Wow nice tomato plants I want to try the San Marzano tomatos I have 35 tomatoes out I 'm doing super beefsteaks, and Better boys ,and roma I grow mine from seeds to ,garden is looking great I have thought about trying the weed fabric will be watching and see how it does for y'all thank you for sharing God Bless
I plant 23 in a 4 x 30 foot area myself grid pattern of two eight plant rows and one seven plant center row. ( Caged ) ALso it shocks the pant to remove the leaves just bury the leaves.
Do you tie the tomatoes to the fence or do you weave them in and out of the fence? I never have tried doing it the way you are and am looking for a better way to do it. Thanks guys, God bless you all.
San Marzanos are a great variety for sauces and pastes! I am growing those this year, and I did last year also. I started them in the house last week, and they will be going in the ground June 1st (Lord willing the fencing will be finished, otherwise, they'll be going in my pots). ☺ Thanks for sharing how you plant! I do basically the same thing, but since I don't have rabbits, I put some homemade compost in and on top of the hole. I also massage the root system to loosen it when I put the plant in.... I don't know if that makes a difference....? Anyhow, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge!! Blessings to you, your family, and the garden. ☺
Looks like you're a week or two ahead of me. In Dayton, Ohio, the normal "last frost" date is Mother's Day, but this year, the 10 day forecast looks good now, so I'm hardening off my plant starts, and preparing the newly expanded garden area as best I can, (given that April, and now May, have gotten crazy busy in my photo/video business.) I'll be using a similar method, with an overhead line, and strings to the ground, and I'm planning on three rows, so I'll be using the same 18" spacing you do. I've been hoping to get to a "famer's market," in my area to sell off "extra" starts, but haven't made it yet, mainly because the starts hadn't even been outside yet. With temps in the high 70s and low 80s the next few days... I'm hoping to change that, but it's hard to find spots outside in the shade... Thanks for your videos, it's always inspiring. (And often motivating, as well.)
Sarah, I got a free packet of tomato seeds at Bakers Creek this year. I started them, they are just getting their true leaves, but still very small... my question is, did I waste them, or is there still time for them to produce this year? Just appreciate your information and thought I would see what you thought. Have a wonderful day!
Thanks Sarah, for sharing. What kind of fabric is that? And if you dont mind where did you get it? Thank you. Enjoyed meeting you guys at Bakers Creek this last weekend..
Hope I ordered it right it's the DeWitt 3000 fabric ? Cant wait to do my garden next yr we had our house built this yr so skipped garden this yr. Plz keep videos coming love your way of thinking and doing things. Weeds run me out of my garden last yr : ( how long you think the fabric will last ?
That's the right stuff. If I remember correctly I think it is rated for 8 years or so. I will be happy if we can get 4 or 5 seasons out of it. We love the way it is working. Kevin
1st year gardener. When i dig out a hole do i need to try to remove all the old roots from the soil before i put it back? Will thy just break down or do they grow into weeds?
Planted our tomatoes last nite in our garden boxes. We use to trench plant 104 tomatoes. Now with garden boxes we trench plant 21. How did you dig the holes out? With the plastic and fence in place?
So is the hole directly below the wire? Then did you alternate which side of the wire the tomatoes were on? I used cages and my tomatoes were way too big for them. I want to try this.
I did the single stem method right next to my cages and both method did well, I think the single stem had more tomatoes at the end of the season. I really don't think there is any reason to alternate sides because that field fence is strong and will hold a lot of weight. I did something similar with my pole beans and plan to grow cucumbers on the same structure (I used 3/4 electrical conduit as a frame with 2x4x60 wire). You could use concrete wire or cattle/hog panels or the fence wire with large openings.
Just planted tomatoes also!! Missed you guys at spring planting festival. Found Doug & Stacy and Zach. I have a question. What is the type of weed fabric that you guys used? Looks a lot thicker than all the types I can seem to find. Is it a nursery product?
Awesome! How did you get your tomato stems so sturdy? Last couple. Years I've started my own from seed and they are floppy. They do survive once transplanted, but I have to tie them to a stick or trellis right off the bat. Thanks for taking us along on your journey!
Like to watch their progress ? I plant way deeper (dry summer normally)on the plant with mine all but top. But starting a plant half that size, been in the ground 2 weeks that size now with blooming starting, do yours have any sign of transplanting shock?
I am so far behind. Hoping tomatoes with in the next week. I have been dodging rain to plant beans, beets, carrots and others. Praying for a good harvest because it is what we live on all winter and summer. I have started some odd tomatoes this year because I need to get tomatoes with less acid so started a lot of orange tomatoes
I'm planning on using raised beds 30" high. I turned 70 today & have problems bending over for long periods of time because of my back. Would these panels work with this? I'm assuming the tomatoes grow on both sides. If my beds are 4' x 8', will I need one whole bed just for tomatoes?
GREAT video! ur tomatoes look so strong and perfect 😁 how old are your plants? this is my first ur from seed, mine are strong but tiny still... I'm a little nervous I didn't start them in time 😕 love watching you guys 😊
A very nice video! I would like to have heard and watched more of the planting process, all the way to the finish line, rather than hear half the video talking about how many tomatoes you guys eat.
you can find patchouli at the Missouri botanical garden in their garden shop called the garden gate. www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/things-to-do/shop-dine/garden-gate-shop.aspx
Thanks for the video! Can I ask what you're going to do about weeds in the walkways between the weed cover? I'm thinking of using the weed fabric instead of chips, but live in a temperate rain forest area in the Pacific Northwest, and any ground not covered or planted becomes an instant weed garden. Is it not an issue there? And if not, won't the soil erode without some kind of covering? I've seen other places use mulch in the pathways. Just wondering what your plan is with the new gardening method. God Bless! I love your videos!
Very Glad to see Sarah wearing a button up sun protection shirt! Very lady like!
I watch your videos religiously because am going to try to replicate your farming methods in my country of origin. Am definitely going to use the woven fabric for weed control, and also the drip irrigation system to water my crops year around.
Thank you and your family for posting and sharing. knowledge
Garden looks beautiful and organized, look forward to watching your gardening season.
Proud of you for grabbing that rabbit poop! I raise them too. Love my bunny poo!
Rabbit poop is black gold! We do the same every year and have always had a nice garden. Plants love that poop, lol.
Loved that you told how many plants you planting!!!!
I never realized you could plant tomatoes that deep! This was very helpful. Thank you!
You can but, the soil is cold and the roots are below the organic and soil life.
You both are such a wealth of great knowledge! Enjoying your channel! May you have an abundant harvest.
loved this...like the way everything is laid out and the bunny poop fertilizer.
You inspired me to get out there, prune my tomatoes and start rooting the pruned branches.
My goal is to share with my neighbors.
Awesome video once again... Thanks for the help with tomatoes...
Thank you for sharing, love gardening
This was a great demonstration. You are amazing. Hugs❤️

Sarah, thank you so much for this video. I'm so excited to see how things are growing on your homestead and in your garden. Wonderful tips! :)

I love tomatoes, can't wait to eat fresh ones.
Looks goo guys!! Thanks for letting us be a small part. God Bless
Hi Sarah great video. do you have a video of what and how you burnt the holes in your ground cover please.
Mmmm. Nothing beats tomatoes!
WISHING you the BEST SUCCESS with your garden ( Yeah, Tomatoes ) to a DELICIOUS HARVEST...Enjoy
In additional to the rabbit pellets, I add crushed egg shells to the hole when planting tomatoes to help with blossom end rot. With chickens and rabbits on site these amendments are free even if they do nothing.
I will be sprinkling with powdered egg shell soon. I have a bunch to process. Good reminder and a great practice!

Another great video! Hoping to plant my tomatoes soon!
My back hurts just thinkin of you putting in 60 mater plants. Lol, Put in my tomatoes yesterday. 👍 👍
great job here in Texas mine are 6 foot tall cb
Great job done Sarah! Going to be lots of awesome maters this season for sure! Hope you folks have a great day!
I plant 23 in a 4 x 30 foot area myself grid pattern of two eight plant rows and one seven plant center row. ( Caged ) ALso it shocks the pant to remove the leaves just bury the leaves.
Great video instructions. Thx!
You encourage me to add rabbits back into my backyard culture.
Another awesome video we are going to plant tomatoes this weekend here in Oklahoma.
Where, mines be in the ground couple weeks now, their starting to bloom. But lucky it has not got cold again
We are gonna try raising rabbits soon
I want to try rabbit manure in my Fall planting this year. Can this method by used in container gardening as well?
Do you tie the tomatoes to the fence or do you weave them in and out of the fence? I never have tried doing it the way you are and am looking for a better way to do it. Thanks guys, God bless you all.

Having just moved to Mo I am very far behind in a garden this year! I am going to have to plant someone else's starts this year I guess.
Good Morning !! First !
Wow, your tomato plants are nice and big. When did you start them?
Sarah, I got a free packet of tomato seeds at Bakers Creek this year. I started them, they are just getting their true leaves, but still very small... my question is, did I waste them, or is there still time for them to produce this year? Just appreciate your information and thought I would see what you thought. Have a wonderful day!
What sort of temperatures do you want to have before you plant your transplants?
Thanks Sarah, for sharing. What kind of fabric is that? And if you dont mind where did you get it? Thank you. Enjoyed meeting you guys at Bakers Creek this last weekend..
It Dewitt brand fabric. You can get it here... www.growerssolution.com and use Coupon code "Traditionalist10" to save 10% on your entire order!
I though you would bring the soil up over the edge of the ground cover. How do you get the stems on your tomatoes to thicken up?
Love

1st year gardener. When i dig out a hole do i need to try to remove all the old roots from the soil before i put it back? Will thy just break down or do they grow into weeds?
It's easier for the plant if you remove the other roots, but you don't have to go overboard. They will break down over time.
Planted our tomatoes last nite in our garden boxes. We use to trench plant 104 tomatoes. Now with garden boxes we trench plant 21.
How did you dig the holes out? With the plastic and fence in place?
How often do you fertilize with rabbit tea?
do you have a video on burning the holes into the fabric? I can't find it.

good video
Could I use goat/sheep pellets?? No rabbits here on our farm in West Plains MO--thanks--Kristy
Yes.
How did you dig the hole within that plastic hole?
How far are u spacing yours?
you can find patchouli at the Missouri botanical garden in their garden shop called the garden gate. www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/things-to-do/shop-dine/garden-gate-shop.aspx

I think it would be great it they planted a cover crop of winter rye. It would stay short and green this year Until next spring.
Thanks for sharing! Are the tomatoes you are trellising determinate or indeterminate? Or does it matter?
They are all indeterminate, but all tomaotes need support...in our opinion.
How long did it take you to plant that many tomatoes by hand?
The hole looked cut not burned??
Don't forget to give Epson salt to them and your peppers
😊
What kind of fencing are u using?
😱😖 I can't believe you bare-handed the poop! Lololol! Only joking.
Great video! What kind of contraption did Kevin use to make those perfect holes in the ground?
Soloman Nivasa I was wondering the same, maybe an auger.
This contraption 😊 th-cam.com/video/jhQlwE06LWs/w-d-xo.html
This contraption 😊 th-cam.com/video/jhQlwE06LWs/w-d-xo.html
What tool did you make the hole with?
Goats manour equally good
:")
:-)
Ummm... Tomatoes are fruits, not vegetables.
:-)
