The Weeknd is at a different place in his life, he's not homeless anymore, making "dark, depressing music". He's living good, fucking a model so that explains this more up tempo, pop-ish sound.
AnEvoultionaryLevelAbove HumanXenununubitch More radio friendly + more radio plays + more exposure = bigger. Just look at Love Me Harder and Earned it.
***** I have listened to the song. Those are both lines in the song, and like Twixilu said he was just quoting another line from the song. btw You look hella dumb right now.
Yes 2015 was a good year I had someone special during that time who went to Ocean City MD for vacation. That is one time I'll always cherish now everything is depressing to me!

I fail to comprehend why so many people, especially fans, are disappointed with this single. Yes, it does have a more pop radio appeal to it, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's selling out. I just think he's trying to expand his fan base and is evolving in terms of style, music and artistic persona, which I have no problem with. Just because an artist is aiming for mainstream radio, does not necessarily mean they are diluting their sound or art form. For example, look at Ed Sheeran. He has become very much mainstream but he has been able to do that while still remaining the same artist as before. He's only grown not regressed and that's the same case with The Weeknd.
"Expanding your fan base" translates to "Changing your style so you can make more money" which translates to "selling out". Im not saying hes selling out to begin with im just saying you're contradicting yourself or you are trying to sugar coat things. Either way, theres nothing wrong with a fan being disappointed that one of their favorite artists is changing their style. To simplify it, if your favorite fruit is an apple and you have a apple tree in your backyard, wouldnt you be kinda pissed if it grew oranges instead? Comprehendo now?
Huh? Did I say there was anything wrong with being disappointed cause clearly I did not. You have your opinions, I have mine. Simple as that. I'm just saying that I personally don't think this single indicates that he's selling out just because it so happens to be a pop record.Yes, it seems to me that he is expanding his fan base but again, I don't necessarily think that means selling out. Would you say someone like Kendrick Lamar is a sell out because he has gained a larger audience over the years? He's still the same innovative artist who is continuing to grow despite his mainstream success. I think you and I have different understanding of the term "sell out". To me, a sell out is someone who completely loses their roots of music to lure mainstream viewers. To me, that is not what Kendrick Lamar or even The Weeknd are doing. You can still stay true to your roots and become mainstream without dumbing down or diluting your style.
The only thing mainstream about this is the beat and the melody he's singing it in but the lyrics are about his favorite drug and not a girl like most people will think. So this is classic weeknd if you ask me
Jbird VOR Not really because it will probably still grow apples with an occasional orange. Now I have the option for an orange if i ever get tired of eating apples.

Moby Dick 2nd place belongs to Elton John, by the way. And yes, he's not just a "hired hand", but Max Martin was the main writer. The Weeknd may have contributed a bit of lyric or a line of melody here and there, but the main song structure was composed by Martin. But hey, I like The Weeknd, which is more than I can say about the majority of artists over the last 20 years...
Moby Dick I don't know where you get your definition from. but to me, a songwriter is a person who writes a song. That is to say, both the music AND the lyric. Or just the music, if it's an instrumental piece. Elton John doesn't write lyrics, and it can be argued that his songs would much less significant without the superb lyrics by Bernie Taupin, so in their case, clearly they are both songwriters (together). However, since a melody without words is still a song, and a lyric without music isn't, it must be said that the most important aspect of any given song is, in fact, the music. So, since Elton provides the music, he's the one I mentioned as being in 2nd place. But Taupin certainly deserves to share that spot with him. And I could give you a link to a site which mentions Elton being 2nd. But it's in Swedish, so I doubt it would do you much good.
Garry Caprani it's not the fact that he's popular, it's that he's completely changed the sound he came up off of. I dont have problem with the song but I understand why people would think he "sold out".
TheDFRNT that's true man, but artists need to evolve to progress. I'm sure there will be more The Morning type songs on his album, just gotta mix it up a bit.
Garry Caprani It really irks me when people say this. Artists DO need to evolve, but artists changing their sound as soon as they go mainstream/get picked up by a label is NOT evolution of their music. It is called **commercialization**. If you want an example of an artist whose music and sound actually evolved, while still remaining commercially successful, look at a band like Radiohead. They have very admirable careers which they successfully advanced on their own terms. I completely understand why artists want to be financially successful and get rich making their music. But sadly, this *almost always* comes with high costs, such as the loss of creative control over their work. Their sound gets changed, their music gets "dumbed down" and infused with pop or dance elements, with the sole goal of achieving radio play and appealing to the broadest audience possible (just look at this song for an example. It was clearly manufactured for the radio and MTV). So when people accuse an artists of 'selling out', they are referring to this process. As a side note, this can be extremely frustrating as a music lover, but what can you do? In order to be financially successful in the entertainment business you need to tap into the world's largest consumer market, which is in the United States. And unfortunately, the general American public seems to have an atrocious taste in entertainment and so unique artists making good music all too often get butchered in order to appeal to these crowds. That is capitalism at it's finest!
MrVidsAllDay Yeah true, but he has his own record company! He also has made the hills, the night, and kinda of old but the king of the fall. Those still sound dark and mysterious. He just exploring different areas. No one can just stay in one mood, he has different moods, from being happy from being high, to lust.

Richie Melgar The reason people complain about it is not because he went mainstream as much, it's more that his newer releases are much different than his music from Trilogy.
Maurice Weakley but he has variety of types of music. All with the a same simple concept. What about his songs in kissland? If you look at it with an open mind whether you want him singing this or not, he totally killed the beat. Ya it sucks how people say xo xo but they dont know shit but we all start from somewhere right?
Maurice Weakley what do you want him to do, make the the same music with the same feel and sound over and over again? The people would say he's not versatile as an artist. He's expanding his style nothing wrong with it. Real Weeknd fans undetstand.

I always listen to the weeknd and I never really read these comment sections to know what other people think, and now I see the same shit I see everywhere else. It ruins enjoying the music sometimes cause you wanna defend what you like. It's all pointless at the end of the day though. Lighten up, all I gotta say.
Ignorance is bliss! But honestly I have to suggest listening to his earlier XO shit. Wicked Games, Next, Pretty..... I could go one and on, I love the gritty side, everything I have heard mainstream seems to fall short.
He started in 2011 I think. I'm also a new fan, I started listening a few months ago... Just search "The Weeknd Trilogy" It's a mix of his first three mixtapes House of Balloons, Echoes Of Silence annd Thursday, you'll love it
Yes, of our generation he is. But also, don't disregard Justin Timberlake, his music is on point. My opinion JT is King of Pop now, I think The Weeknd should be prince.
C-Master Excuse me, but in my opinion i dont feel like the weeknd's music should be placed on the "pop" category, just because most of his music is r&b and rap. This song I would def call pop, but i feel like he should be the king of r&b :)
Link Gamer Actually, I've seen the Weeknd live in Glasgow. And I can say he sounds the exact same if not better live than he does in any of the songs you will hear on his albums. So autotune or not, still phenomenal.
My brother discovered weeknd before he went big. I listened to him thinking “HOW is he not famous yet??” Literally, maybe 4 months later, the 50 shades of grey movie came out, with his song. I was like well ITS ABOUT TIME. Also as others have said, I LOVE how similar he sounds to Michael Jackson! If MJ was around right now, this is what his music would sound like. ❤
As an old fan of him, seriously I am the happiest person to see him gaining a lot of fans, well a lot of people knew him because of Earned it, so to those people, please listen to his old amazing songs, you will never get bored of them. He is dope, and his songs are just so fucking amazing. I love him so much. XO.
OMG I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR AGEEES! ALWAYS HAD TO LISTEN TO IT ON DAILYMOTION...I can finally download it on my phone. But this is still not my favorite... I'm waiting for Girl born in the 90s.
Too many people complain about how The Weeknd's music has changed, but they're too close-minded to realize that every artist changes throughout their career. An artist that sings about the same stuff with the same production gets old FAST. Also, he warned us that he would change in "Rolling Stone" so there really is no need to complain. Anyways, this song is amazing. Very 80's, Michael Jackson-esque. It still has a bit of a dark feel, but it's also upbeat enough to dance to. And it's radio-friendly, which means he will reach a wider audience. Can't wait till his new album comes out ❤️
This song has a special place in my heart. I was born and brought up in a Catholic family in Texas and my boyfriend was born and brought up in a strict Hindu family back in India. He moved to the states for college. We met in class and instantly fell for each other. The difference in our races created many obstacles for us. Even our parents stood between us because of the religious differences. But we stuck to it and fought all those battles together and today we are the happiest of couples.I hope we get to live with each other forever. ❤️🇺🇸🇮🇳❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
amazing to see the growth of the weeknd looking back to 2010(edit: 2011!) when he didn't even show his face. he has SO much talent. he has the closest voice to michael jackson since..well, michael jackson
You know people cant feel their face, toes, or hands cause when in the winter it is not a persons normal temperature but if it was hot your body wont feel so bad it would just burn hot (just to let you know if you knew this your smart if you didnt stay in school)
I remember when this song first came out I was so relieved I found this song and album 7 years ago istg time flies it feels like beauty behind the madness was dropped yesterday bro that iconic hairstyle says it all
''I''ll be different. I think I'll be different. I hope I’m not different...and I hope you’ll still listen'' Abel Tesfaye (Rolling Stone, 2011) Have been listenin this guy since House of Balloons...so? His music has changed? Of course, wtf u expected, you're not the same person now than 4 years ago...neither him! Just fuckin dance and stop hatin!
AnEvoultionaryLevelAbove HumanXenununubitch Wtf hahahahaha of course i prefer old Abel, but I respect him, and this tune is dope...im not defendin ''Earned It'' and new bullshit...just respect an artist who gave me so much, he deserves it Chris brown....nigga please.
"Can't Feel My Face" is another great song. After hearing this song, it looks like I can feel anything else that is needed. #SuperAwesome for the Summer!
Takes me back to my senior year of high school, this song was a staple EVERY weekend that winter when my friends and I would go ice skating Friday night after school. Such good times. I'd love to just have a surreal dream and think I'm back there for a night. Feels like yesterday but instead 10 whole years is sneaking up and it's right around the corner. Try to enjoy every phase of your life, because even when you think it's all gone to Hell, something as simple as a song can take you back to that exact moment, sometimes to the only bad feeling, but I've found more often than not, I find the silver lining when looking back and miss something about it.
Btw this song is about a drug addiction ( she = drugs) I'm letting ppl know about this bc i keep seeing comments about how the song is stupid or it doesn't make sense If you actually pay attention to the lyrics it will make sense
It doesn't make sense to the dumb ass bandwagons that only know him because of earned. But it makes sense to people with a brain or people who have been listening to him
xrixnee lizxmx I don't think people are dumb for not getting it lol TH-cam is made up of mostly really young kids so they wouldn't get it like we would.
Funny how people are just now finding out about The Weeknd. I've been listening to him for a out 4 years. "High for this" was one of the first song I heard.
People confuse mainstream and pop. Yes it's a pop song, if you don't like it then this song isn't for you. That's why he has songs like "the hills" "king of the fall" and "often". And even if he is being mainstream why wouldn't yall want an artist to be heard by different demographics. If you like an artist you gonna want everybody else to like him as well. Let him expand his audience. Yall should learn from kiss land he's not gonna sound the same EVERY project. Most artists evolve trilogy was damn near 5 years ago.
Plus for dark music to be good it has to come from an authentic place. I guess that's true for any music really. If he's feeling this, he should write music like this. It's still a cut above the usually poppy, mainstream dance stuff.
I too think of Michael Jackson when I hear this song lol. To the other people, how is it rude to say the weeknd ft. Michael Jackson, it doesn't have to be the other way around. Level of fame and awesomeness doesn't change the fact that they're the same, they're artists. Nothing diff.
The Weeknd is at a different place in his life, he's not homeless anymore, making "dark, depressing music". He's living good, fucking a model so that explains this more up tempo, pop-ish sound.
vinsanity227 And I also think he wants to be one of the biggest artists in the world. This will get him there
***** no...they're just shit.
AnEvoultionaryLevelAbove HumanXenununubitch More radio friendly + more radio plays + more exposure = bigger. Just look at Love Me Harder and Earned it.

vinsanity227 explain the hills then ? lol
"...and I hope you'll still listen." Rolling Stone lyrics are coming to life. We love you Abel and your new sound. Can't wait for the album. XO
"I hope I'm not different."
***** when did he say that he didn't.
***** what are you saying
i just added a line from the song lol
***** I have listened to the song. Those are both lines in the song, and like Twixilu said he was just quoting another line from the song. btw You look hella dumb right now.

But it's in Swedish, so I doubt it would do you much good.
i miss his dark sounding music
Michael Hope dude its one song hills just droop that bruce jenner shit is dark
Then replay his old songs you band wagoner. What's so difficult about that.
I feel you man. Trilogy and Kiss Land all the way
Micah Sanders lol some songs on kissland sound like this song... So idk what yall talkin about.
Xitlalli Garzon the only one I can think of is Wanderlust. Everything else is totally different
As soon as someone becomes popular, apparently they're a sell out.. Great logic
Garry Caprani ikr, only hipsters say shit like that.
Garry Caprani
It really irks me when people say this.

All y'all saying the weeknd is turning too mainstream...what did you expect...he's too amazing to stay underground bruh...
EXACTLY, everyone's wanting him to stay in the one small corner instead of wanting him to grow in the music industry.
Richie Melgar The reason people complain about it is not because he went mainstream as much, it's more that his newer releases are much different than his music from Trilogy.
Maurice Weakley exactly!!

The beginning came on strong I take it he is telling pple who know him that he hasn't changed.
*****
Ignorance is bliss! But honestly I have to suggest listening to his earlier XO shit. Wicked Games, Next, Pretty..... I could go one and on, I love the gritty side, everything I have heard mainstream seems to fall short.
i tried listening to the Weeknd's earlier stuff since so many people suggested it but i just couldn't get into it
***** *applauds* So true.
This guy's music is amazing, from "Earned it" to "The Hills" then now this. Does anyone know he is from? I heard Canada but not sure.
Mbandi Music he comes way back actually..Do it, High for this etc. Earned it isn't even in the top 15 of his best tracks
Mbandi Music and yeah he's from canada, you should listen to his old stuff, I'm sure you'll be blown away
Mandy X'O-twod I am gonna have to. Do you know when started releasing music, I never heard of him till the "Earned It"
All His Songs Are Amazing . Not Just These Three.
He started in 2011 I think. I'm also a new fan, I started listening a few months ago... Just search "The Weeknd Trilogy" It's a mix of his first three mixtapes House of Balloons, Echoes Of Silence annd Thursday, you'll love it
He really is the Michael Jackson of our generation
Yes, of our generation he is. But also, don't disregard Justin Timberlake, his music is on point. My opinion JT is King of Pop now, I think The Weeknd should be prince.
***** ha
C-Master Excuse me, but in my opinion i dont feel like the weeknd's music should be placed on the "pop" category, just because most of his music is r&b and rap. This song I would def call pop, but i feel like he should be the king of r&b :)
Adam Fa Sorry, but Michael Jackson didn't use autotune.
literally...
Except he sounds male.

Lulucmoi07 Oh, u on them bread crumbs, good trace!
I'm from India too hope you guys have a great journey ahead...

Btw this song is about a drug addiction ( she = drugs)
I'm letting ppl know about this bc i keep seeing comments about how the song is stupid or it doesn't make sense
