My 80 year old father is currently in the hospital with HSV-1 encephalitis. As in your video, he had symptoms for days, perhaps weeks, prior to having a couple of seizures and being admitted to ICU. While in the ICU he had random low (25 Bom) and high (130 bon) heart rate. He became more and more confused, fever, slight pneumonia. He was treated with a couple different antibiotics and moved to the geriatric ward. It wasn't until a week into his hospitalization that viral encephalitis was suspected (delirium was initially suspected). Antiviral was started. After 3-4 days another CT scan revealed the infection was progressing. He was induced into a coma and after 2 days this was stopped. It is now almoat a week and he hasn't woken up. He is moving his legs, arms and even head in his own. 2 days ago he slightly opened his eyes. He is not responding to any simple verbal instructions. He is intubated but able to breathe on own. Tube left in, for now as they are concerned he may stop breathing in his own. Yesterday his breathing became more rapid. Family has been told in a few days they will need to remove tube and insert through neck (tracheostomy) and similar to his stomach for feeding. Family was told at this time we will need to make a decision to continue care or not (commence palliative care). Do you have any advice? Specifically with specific questions we should be asking his doctors. Thank you.

Just saw your message. Sorry to hear about your dad. It's always a good idea to have a family conference involving the intensivist, neurologist and the infectious disease specialist to discuss prognosis and goals of care.

I just want to say thank you. Love your videos. My wife had a brain mass removed the mass was under her brain pushing on the brain stem it was the size of a baby Orange and as long as a corndog. 1/10/2020. She seized after surgery and now her eyes roll in the back of her head. The docs have put her on an eeg 2 times for 24 hours. Last night i watched her eyes roll while on the eeg and could not see any thing. Note im in seattle wa. Uw medical center. I asked for them to turn the notch on to 60 for the fact when she was sleeping her whole screen was black. Thanks to you and your videos the docs dont like me im telling them how to do there job lol. 😂😂😂

I am currently recovering from this disease. I am going to look at my own EEG now and see what I have learned from your video. Thank you. (I am lucky and it appears I will make a nearly full recovery.)

Great insight into HSV encephalitis - one can get fronto-temporal haemorrhage too! Hopefully I can upload more medical educational videos like you too one day!
