I'm building one off of the same thing so I needed this
I've already had one built. this one's cool and all but mines made with a hallowed out hoplite with and electric motor to spin the blade. and it's got a real blade but I've dulled it slightly so no harm comes to anyone that touches the blade
Raging Fatass yea mine needs to be a convention piece so it can make noise but it can't move
I once dressed up as Ash in full get up for Halloween after 9/11 happened. I spent over $50 to make the cheap costume and headed to work at the mall like that. After I finished my shift, security recognized my outfit and told me they've received a few complaints about me and told me next time to keep it in a bag. I didn't think my fake shotgun and chainsaw looked that convincing, but I later won a prize for best costume at a club.

How do I cut my hand off without bleeding to death?
Cauterize the stump.
That Guy dude had his hand possessed by a deadite, I wouldn’t be surprised if he wouldn’t feel any pain after that
The way I once did a hand off effect was I put my hand in a fist and put a sock over it. Cover just the top in fake blood and a little bit of liquid latex for the flesh and then cover the sides in makeup that’s your skin tone. It looks awesome and it’s effective

A 'Tamara's Never Seen' of the Evil Dead and now this, I really hope this means we are getting a Nostalgia Critic of the original Evil Dead
aspiring prop maker here; thanks so much James, for doing these. Between you and the DIY prop-shop folks on Awe me, I've learned so much. I'm still working with solid props, swords and the like, but I've begun planning some designs that will include triggered lights! can't wait to see what you have in store next
I built mine with the exact same Homelite XL chainsaw as they used for the film and show and yet yours came out looking better than mine, embarrassing but impressive. Also a little extra something for people doing this build, you can buy retracting key chains for like £2 on eBay, hot glue that inside and poke the wire through the hole for the starter cord and attach the wood to that and you have a "working" pull cord

Wow! This really brings me back, considering that, about two years ago, I personally made myself a chainsaw hand when I dressed as Ash for Halloween! Of course, I just took a toy chainsaw, wrapped the handle with cardboard, and stuffed the cardboard with newspaper.
Thanks for the tutorial! Made my own a tiny bit differently and I got a ton of compliments!

I watched one two and three for the first time last night. The second one is hilarious. I loved all three of them.
My suggestion actually made it! Very happy with what you turned out for this one, Jim. I've seen that chainsaw at the Halloween store for about $40 so hopefully I can get my hands on it soon. And not get them cut off in the process.

To this day I have never figured out how Ash actually operates the chainsaw with just a stump while holding his Boom-Stick

He has a hook on his shirt he puts the pull-trigger on, so he can just hook the trigger and use that to pull.

You should also have a metal gauntlet with you when wearing the costume. If you ever get tired of carrying the chainsaw, you can put it down and switch to the gauntlet. Remember, Ash got that upgrade in the third movie.

looks great! but I would replaced the circular vent where the cord is with a drain cover because the one on the chainsaw looks nothing like it should

as a possible supplement for the chainsaw pull cord, a retractable keychain with a dowel instead of a loop on the end will work as well. Giving the effect of an actual pull cord. Enjoyed the video and am hoping to tackle a build like this in the future.

a handy trick for cleaner circular cuts on plastic is take an old soldering gun that you no longer use and just burn through the plastic, it ends cleaner and gives less sanding work
