In the video I start by going over the reasons of why my previous laser blasters couldn't burn things from far away. In order to do long distance burning, I needed something with higher beam quality/smaller emitter size. I settled on a 1W 405nm laser diode. It is significantly less powerful than my 200W laser bazooka, but the high quality beam it makes can travel much straighter than those huge diode arrays.
A single spatial mode laser diode wasn't enough though. I built a beam expander (just a Galilean telescope in reverse) to widen the beam leaving the aperture so it could stay tighter over a distance. It was cool getting to use old technology on a device like this.
For the burning demos I started with some balloons. I found that the laser had to be very stable in order to pop balloons from a distance. I explain in the video that unlike a real ghunn, the laser needs time for the target to accumulate energy so it heats up significantly. With a tripod I was able to pull off some long distance balloon pops, but it became very difficult past 100ft. The most distant shot I made was from about 150ft.
For the boomy targets, I used a mix of several chemicals that don't don't like to be together, added charcoal to make it dark for laser absorption, and bound it into a puck with red gum.

I don't know how good you are with software/hardware, but you could measure the distance with a laser and have the aperture automatically adjust itself to a perfect focal point. I think that would dramatically increase the burning efficiency.
That sounds like a very cool idea, I guess the measuring laser itself would also need to converge but that can probably be mitigated by routinely trying various configurations until good focus is detected (?)
@@samuelallan7452 The measuring laser doesn't need to be focused to converge on the target, it just needs to have low enough divergence that the majority of the laser light reflects off of the target.

You could determine the centre of the observed shape and then even if the radius at a certain distance is greater than the object, the centre of the observed shape (e.g. red circle) could be regarded as a point to use for distance calculation (? I’m just starting on electrodynamics)

I built a control system for my telescope tripod, using an arduino gears and some stepper motors. I can control where my telescope looks from my computer and the image is fed back over WiFi. I think you could do something similar to aim your laser rifle. Could be a cool project, it was for me

You are the inspiration behind the laser rifle I built using an engraving laser. I wish I had the laser training you had. I have zero knowledge on laser technology or even basic electronics. Love these videos though.
The CNI lasers have some of the thinnest, low divergence beam quality of any hand held laser I've ever seen by a long shot. My 200mw 532nm is still my favorite laser in my collection :)

Would pulsing the laser increase effective range? I imagine a passive q-switch placed inline before the beam expander would work.
I really think you should try this again using a telephoto camera lens. They would have a lot finer focusing to make your dot as concentrated as possible. Some tv lenses have geared focus that can be servo driven. Could make for an awesome laser rifle

Pretty creative work.
It needs to be an impulse laser. Because then you have more power, for a tiny moment till a cap recharges. The reason i say this, is because a constant low power source is less efficient. Because the surface your heating up, constantly radiates that heat as well. So if its an impulse, its more likely to cause damage.i dont know what you could fit in there, other than a short co2 laser.
Could also help prevent overheating the laser itself. Would need diodes that can handle that kilowatt millisecond burst or whatever it is.
It would also be much easier to aim since you don't have to hold the laser still

I am a machinist in the aerospace industry. I can tell you metal is not the way to go. It'll be heavier and won't solve the flexing because of the loose thread in the pipe. But there is a simple solution. Just put what you already have in a single larger tube to prevent the flexing by supporting your 'scope at its joints. Long ago about 30 years I used a rifle scope as a LASER collimater .
I used it to raise hell on Earth along with a modified Radio scanner used as electronic warfare equipment and it was a lot of fun
