      +Reptile Z Hi Reptile Z! If you will have adult supervision and parents/guardians that are willing to take you to the pet store or somewhere of the like....totally! The only reason I advise against pets for really young people is because there are illnesses that can arise and parents aren't always willing to help. You know yourself better than anyone so if you are mature and think you can commit to taking care of a living thing - go for it! You just need to prepare yourself and make sure you know a lot about leopard geckos! If you have any questions feel free to ask. I wish you the best of luck with your new friend. :D

    Hey! I've had a leopard gecko for 2 years and recently got one that my girlfriend bought me. They are wonderful pets and I love mine to bits. I have my male Loki and my female Frejya. Both are currently separated as Frejya is young. About 6 months old I believe.
    A suggestion to those who want a leopard gecko: They do in fact eat insects but always research before buying. There are a lot of pros to owning one and it's quite a learning experience.
    A good feeder insect is the dubia roach. Currently only available online, they are a healthier feeder for a leopard gecko as they have more vitamins and nutrients than a cricket when gut loaded. Crickets are known to carry more parasites than any other feeder insects. I currently feed mine mealies, dubias, and occasional waxworms. They love it. Dubias can cause growth spurts in leos too. My male already grew an inch. 9 inches and a bit heavy now!
    This is a great video and y'all should watch it to know the pros and cons. Hopefully those who want a leopard gecko will take great care of them! :D

    Every time I see a video saying how quiet leopard geckos are I think of the one at my work that is so vocal. He makes tons of different sounds and you can pretty well tell his mood from his sounds (as well as body language, but he makes very specific sounds for different moods). I literally want him SPECIFICALLY for how vocal he is because it's so cute.

      It all depends on personality and whether they are tamed or not. I own 2 leopard geckos, and one is completely fine with me. Curls up in my hair and sleeps. The other tries to run from me and freaks out, but lets me hold her for maybe 10 seconds before leaving. (Still trying to tame her). It really all depends.

    Every video I've seen has discussed how quiet leopard geckos are. I agree, mostly. They can scream if they're super upset. However, if they're well cared for and not stressed, they usually don't say anything.
    My leo, Helena, just discovered a great spot to hang out when I'm holding her. Found this video when I was looking for something for both of us to watch, but then she zonked out. I'm wearing a cowlneck blouse, and she's asleep in the folds of the neckline. She's such a sweetheart, and absolutely gorgeous--dark yellow with purplish brown spots and some white on her tail. The spots on her hips look like a butterfly. Darling girl won't eat out of a dish, though. I'm not sure whether it's a vision issue or a case of spoiled gecko syndrome, but she'll only eat if the bugs are handed to her one at a time.

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They only scream when babies

    • @deusregnat
      @deusregnat 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Leo Life True, most screaming is done by babies or geckos in a "fight or flight" situation. In the months since I made that comment, though, I've learned that leos have a lot of other vocal sounds. On the gecko forums I frequent, I've heard of some abnormally verbose leopard geckos who initially freak out their guardians by spending the majority of their active time squeaking, chirping, whistling, clicking, and grunting. Until the human gets used to it, it's a guaranteed way for the scaly baby to get attention--the voice of an animal that shouldn't be making noise understandably brings someone running to see what's wrong.
      My sweet girl occasionally makes noise but never screams. If she's upset about a bad shed, a pesky dubia that escaped the dish and invaded her hide, the indignity of having a belly check during mating season (she has a history of infertile eggs), or something else along those lines, she makes this quiet grunt/screech/hiss noise. If she thinks I'm ignoring her when she wants attention, she has a chirp which so nearly resembles a bird that I almost started looking for geckos when I was out shopping and heard one bird call to another.

    Hi, pretty good video. I just want to mention a couple of things:
    1-she has stuck skin, you can remove that with water and being gentle with a qtip. It’s important to aid them with that if it’s stuck.
    2-leopard geckos are not nocturnal, they are actually crepuscular, meaning they are awake around dawn and dusk.

    Good pros/cons list. I just got a Leo. I choose a Crested Gecko for my first, well second as I had a Green Anole, lizard because the no heat lamp requirement for them was at the time better for the space I had available. Love her though, and I can't wait til my new Leo is settled in. Definitely, think she'll be easier to tame than my crested gecko was since cresties will drop their tail in a heart beat if stressed or feeling threatened (ie when you reach for them). Leos seem much more attached to their tail but I learned a lot about handle taming with my crested gecko and she was a toughie (used Tegu taming techniques). Learned a neat trick that I tried on the Leo before I bought her and she seemed to start taking to it so she seems like a quick learner. My crestie is fast too plus can jump quite a few feet and then sprint up the wall if she wanted. It was like hop scotch the first month of handle training. Now she walks hand to hand pretty nice. I know Leos once tamed tend to be more lazy than cresties after they reach over a year.

    i own a bearded dragon right now and im thinking of trying a gecko out after my beardie... are they very different from bearded dragons or are they kind of the same... bearded dragons eat mealworms too so i have no problem with bugs.... does the temperature need to be hot or cold? what do u use for flooring in their cage? and do they like green looking cages or desert-like cages? this video taught me alot about them thank you :)

    • @jordantate_
      @jordantate_ 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm getting a gecko soon and after lots of research I've discovered that yes they are similar to bearded dragons. Except they prefer there heat to come from under the tank (undertank heating pads instead of heating lamp domes) and they're nocturnal while bearded dragons are diurnal. Also, the temperature of the heating pad needs to be 75-90, definitely not 100+, that's too hot for geckos. Most importantly DO NOT use sand for the substrate. You can use a paper towel for baby geckos and juveniles but for adults I recommend some reptile carpet.

    My teacher gave me her gecko for free, so she's already tamed. I've handled Clyde like a few times and she was so calm. Leopard geckos are so sweet, fun, and adorable. I recommend getting one, except if you are squeamish and don't like bugs, then you really don't really want to get a Leo.

  • @ProfessionalPets
    @ProfessionalPets  11 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    jonah molina Hi! I wish! haha! There is maybe a 5% chance that once you get a leopard gecko it will be tamed and that is only if the leo you get is from a breeder or a friend that has already tamed them. If you adopt 99.9% of the time they aren't tame, especially if from a pet store. Also even if they were tame they still need to adjust to you, their new owner! So I hope I answered your question! Thanks for watching, and commenting. it means a lot. Also, I have many more leopard gecko videos on taming. Look around the channel and you'll find some :)

    I have a leopard gecko, and he's my lil homie!
    I agree with everything in this video. And AJ, my gecko, is my first pet. Super easy to take care of, really all I have to do is clean his tank and stuff. If you're looking to get a pet that's super easy to take care of and one that will make your friends and family impressed, I'd definitely suggest that you get a leopard gecko. Lucky for me, I live out in the country where crickets and small grasshoppers are pretty much everywhere outside, but I'd suggest you go to any fishing bait store where they keep live crickets. I also found out that adults can eat small earthworms. At least AJ does with no problems.

    Cool, I actually owned a leopard gecko once as a kid, but my Dad was mostly the one who took care of it, but I still helped out with feeding her and we even took her out of her cage sometimes to interact with her. Her name was Charmelon and she was a cool pet we had, she actually had a lot of spots compared to yours and we mostly fed her crickets, which I didn't mind getting as a kid, my Dad was the one who bought them, but I still helped by feeding her the crickets when she was in her cage, and I always thought it was cool at how she ate them, she always ran up and just chomped them down, which looked cool to me as a kid. I might think of getting a new leopard gecko in honor of Charmelon, cause I would really love to have one again, though I should only get one when I don't have a dog or a cat, cause I feel it would be dangerous for the little guy to be around a dog, especially my dogs. Hey isn't also important to have a lamp for them and to keep them in a warm room to help live in a suitable environment? Cause that's what my Dad did for Charmelon.

Few questions: The ones in the petshop had heat lamps in their enclosures, when you take them out do you have to make sure they don't get cold or is it ok as long as it's not for too long? Is it likely that when you first get one they will be scared and their tale might drop off? and how long do they usually live? Thanks :)

  • @Nemozoli
    @Nemozoli 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi! Great video, almost all the pros are accounted for... :-)
    I might add that it is really good that you can go for a vacation for a week or two and still return to find your geckoes healthy and feeling good if you fed them well before leaving home. That is not the case with cats/dogs/etc....
    My leopards don't eat every other day, they are more accustomed to feeding twice weekly in summer, once a week in winter time. If I try to feed them more, they just ignore the crickets/whatever.
    My favourite gecko (the tamest one) sometimes scratches the glass of the terrarium in the evening to be taken out and have a chance to climb and rest upon my shoulder (and be able to heat up a bit :-) )
    Sometimes he climbs into my breast pocket (if there is one on the T-shirt), snuggles up there and goes to sleep :-) and looks really annoyed when I try to put him back into the vivarium. :-D
