This really does read as a solution looking for a problem. And arguably makes it worse, as locking it causes some spray (At least in this video).
Also that build quality (or lack thereof) really spoils the deal, with the threads and sealing problems .Considering that a Twsbi 580ALR can be had for around the same cost, it just doesn't feel worth it.
I really appreciate how all these little details are shown and discussed in this video. I really appreciate the "living with it" style testing that is done.
It seals well, like most pens out there under normal conditions. But the nib down "airplane test" is the worst condition usage test the pen can go through (without willingly abusing the pen). Most pens don't pass that test to be fair. But there are some that do AMAZINGLY well! I will do a video on my top airplane pens.
Doodlebud adding mini-physics lessons to fountain pens is one of my favourite things
It's where my mind always goes right away 🤓
I just watched a This Old Tony video, and now this one. It's all hands! 😄

Handy handy
This pen makes it look like Monteverde wanted a piece of Twsbi's pie. Lol
Precisely - and yet, they managed to execute it poorly (Polariscope indicates much more stress on the Monteverde than on the TWSBI; injection molding seams are sloppier; cap doesn't seal as good; aggressive profile metal threads on resin threads (TWSBI is resin on resin); and poor tolerances), yet they still have the gall to sell it at a $20 USD markup over TWSBI. My opinion of Monteverde gets lower as time passes, and this pen frankly just straight up pisses me off, lol
These honest reviews are so helpful. Much thanks.
Great content with lots of valuable info! The polarity check is a good indicator of internal stresses, which may cause brittleness especially when exposed to extreme temperature or pressure. Also (as others mentioned) the Wing Sung 698 is probably a closer comparison than the TWSBI ECO, as it’s also a piston filler with a locking knob.
Yeah just has a look at that pen.... styling is pretty damn boring LOL I can see why I never picked on up ;)
@ I briefly had one, you didn’t miss much lol. Wing Sung’s QC has come a long way since then
I like how it handles glitter ink and that it lets you post the cap.
Yup probably a great pen for shimmer inks
Looks like an answer to a question no one asked. The pen is not ready for prime time. I appreciate your explanation of the injection process. Thanks for the review
I always like checking clear injection molded pens with the polariscope :)
Huh. I have had a few piston pens over the years with a locking piston knob - the wing sung 618 in particular comes to mind. I did enjoy having that extra security on the pens that do it, but I don’t know if it’s the… major innovation Monteverde is trying to make it sound like 😅
Agreed.
The Wingsung 698 has been around since late 2016. It's an all plastic pen which happens to have an innovative² TM piston locking mechanism.
:))))
The 698 came out a little before a slew of other models, including the 3008 and your version.
Check out chrisrap52 for his 2017 reviews of these models.
The 698 itself is an outstanding and versatile pen that's aminable to easy nib replacement or modding.
Peace out.
@ I did quite like my 698 while I had it! It had real bang for your buck, and I ended up using it (and my 618) to penable some friends 🙂 Also great shoutout - chrisrap52 does fantastic reviews!
@mariexlupin Many thanks.
Yeah, watching that chrisrap video right now :)
He also mentions the no tool disassembly of the piston.
I should direct people on Doodlebud's general comments on the Monteverde. The similarities between the Monteverde and the WingSung are "excessive," apart from the nib.
:)
Never knew about those ones. I had a look however and the styling just doesnt do it for me so I can see why I overlooked it.
Exactly, I have had quite a few pens with the locking mechanism as well. Wing Sung 698, 618. Luoshi piston-filler are the ones I recall.
Great honest review, greatly appreciated.
I try to be as straight up yet fair as I can.
Works like the crown of a watch, very cool!
Wing sung has the 618 and 698 with a locking position knob. It’s kinda neat.
I've seen that pen online but never used one. Is there system better I wonder?

Thank you kindly :)

Love me some Doodle science !
Another reviewer said you can't disassemble it to clean it. I like my pens sorta spotless (except for the one dedicated to Bay State Blue), so I decided to skip this one. And now, you're telling us that it leaks. So, yeah...thank you again, Doodlebud.
It's doesn't leak, just doesn't pass the nib down vacuum test (simulated flight) which most pens dont pass that test. Only a handful pass nib down. Not an amazing pen (at least in my view) but doesn't leak under normal conditions.
It is Doodle Nye the Fountain Pen Guy!
I purchased two and had to send them back because they both siezed permanently at the locking knob. Since they aren't made to be disassembled, there wasn't anything I could do. I even verified this with Yafa and Goulet, and thankfully the return process was simple. Hopefully they do a better job with a potential MP2.
Hello!! Is a bit expensive, there is an olive green version. Thanks for the review and fine details.
I have one and agree, it’s okay.
Solid 6/10!
Awesome vid once again. Hope you can check out the Hong Dian M2. It seems to be pretty popular.
On idly twisting the piston lock: "I do something I shouldn't -- and it's everyone else's responsibility to stop me."
There are design choices. One way lets the knob wiggle, another design won't have a wiggly knob. Just depends how much design consideration is done.
I am just two minutes into the video. But I am seeing some hate in the comment here and in other video reviews for the lock system. I actually love it, and I think it is an amazing addition.
Let me explain. I live in a mountain. My house is at a hight barely below 2000 meters (6400 ft) above sea level, but my workplace is at about 1200 m (3800 ft), and my wife's at 900 m (3000). We both write a lot, almost exclusively with fountain pens, and like pens with larger ink capacities. We own quite a few TWSBIs. The ECO and 580 start burping ink on us often, once the reservoir is about half empty.
Guess what... we bought two of these, and as soon as we see enough space to push the puston out and flysh the air out, we do it. Not one instance of burping since, and we both have gone through at leas one entire filling (I am in my 3rd, but I like broad nibs).
I do like this MP1
Well that was a timely reminder for me to check a new Lamy nib I put on my pen yesterday. I’m used to that pen being scratchy and hadn’t realized the new nib was a bit misaligned.
Any advice on a good source for cheap practice nibs? I feel like I need to improve my skills but don’t want to wreck a bunch of Lamy nibs learning.
Aliexpress. There's bunch of cheap nibs (Jinhao has quite a few and I believe they have Lamy Safari compatible clones). I learned tuning nibs on Jinhao's no6, they were like a lot of 5 for couple of dollars.
Aliexpress has a bunch
"ok" is the exact thought I had when I first heard about this pen. Happy it's there for those who enjoy it but definitely not for me.
Someone will love them and glad they do. But I'd pick something else over this one
Thank you. Sounds like the Eco at lower price is a better pen. BTW, i like your watch...what is it?
Here's my watch s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_mKIoXcn
I did a review of this one and another. Very impressed with the build quality
That was a nice look at the pen DB. I've had the black model with a 1.1mm stub since Nov. and noticed the same things. I'm guilty of being the "Magilla Gorilla" kinda guy, sometimes over tighten my metal pens, but try harder to be careful with the plastic ones. I like the pen well enough and with the stub on it it is a fairly wet writer. Sometimes it pays to see the better reviews, like yours, before buying. It certainly would have been better if they had taken more time to get things right.
@@zeus52452 I REALLY like my Monteverde Ritma with the stub. But this pen could use some more refinement
For the love of the universe, I do not understand why it's so difficult to design a piston knob that just won't turn when you cap your pen. It's not rocket science. It doesn't have to lock. Just make it smaller OR make the cap crap much lower than the knob. Or just do both.
Hi , what is the blue pen? It’s so cute pls lemme know. Tia ❤
Asvine P50

There are other pens that have a locking piston like that. I can't think of any names at the moment, but I'm sure I've even had it on some cheap Chinese pens, maybe Wingsung or Jinhao or PenBBS
A few mentioned that. I wasnt aware of those pens. I had a look at the wingsung 618 & 698..... I can see why I never picked on up LOL. Probably a better job on the piston lock, but the styling really doesnt do it for me. Looks they they were inspired by cold porridge....
@@Doodlebud 😂😂😂
Oh i love this pen its quite good for comfort writing for me
Anyways day 18 of saying
As always a great review!
Thanks for checking out the vid
Yeah never had a problem of the twist piston engaging, but I only travel with Kaweco or the Nova Pocket (thanks to your review, lovely pen) so maybe it is a problem for people who toss their pen into their bag or something
They need to make more piston fillers that you can unscrew the entire nib and grip section imo, so much easier to clean the barrel and grease up the piston, this one I see has a restrictor behind the nib too, terrible design.
Doooooodlebud!
I enjoy your cynical side 😂
Had to pause for a second and check myself LOL
The rainbows not only show where stress is trapped in the plastic, the more rapid the rate of color change over distance the greater the stress. The problem starts with injection. Shape your mold wrong or poorly locate your injection ports (gates) causes flow induced stress. Cool things down too quickly and internal stresses balloon. Miss handle any a number of factors increases stress. It all gets "frozen in" as the part solidifies. Over time this frozen in stress can cause micro-cracks to appear. These cracks shift stress distribution to the point where it exceeds the strength of the material - that's when you get sudden, catastrophic failure. This is why a pen sitting unmolested in your desk drawer might suddenly break. Attention to minimizing molded in stress stops when failure losses are low enough management chooses to live with it. Note: Attaching finials and pocket clips adds mechanical stress, the reason you see a lot of failures at those points.
Thanks for the extra info
Is the polarization quantum electrodynamics or quantum chromodynamics? I can’t remember.
I think it’s QED.
@@ryansullivan3081 I'm not sure I didn't study it that deep. Was shown as an engineering inspection trick, not learned in a physics class. But if I have the time I could delve into it more
@ I know QED also has to do with the delta in time that it takes light to reach your eye, but in the book the example is the reflection of light off of an oil slick. Not sure if it’s perfectly analogous, but it sounds similar.
Yes that is a common analogy and as far as I know its the same principle. Same thing for the change in color when I anodize Titanium. The thickness of the oxide layer creates the time dilation. When you think about it, its one of those beautiful things in physics. Its an amazing visual effect and the reason behind it is mind blowing and our eyes can easily see & measure it effortlessly. The regular person sees pretty colors, which is great. But simply ask 1 important question.... "Why does it do that?" or "What makes that happen?" and it opens up a HUGE world of knowledge and discovery. And all you do is keep asking that same questions until the full and complete answer is achieved with 100% certainty (or close as you can since there is always a little bit of uncertainty). "Curiosity killed the cat" is the dumbest expression there is. Curiosity changes the world. All the cool stuff we have created is because someone was curious. "Curiosity makes cool shit!" should be the expression.
The lock enables posting that is not possible on other piston pens.
Ha b ing said thst, I do wish the pen had been engineered & assembled more precisely.
A lot of piston filler don't post on the piston nob.
For sure, its just a bit janky. With a little more thought and attention to detail it can be a bit more elegant. Probably not any more expensive to manufacture in the end if a little more time is put into design on the front end. There are lots of tools or items out there that have locking knobs. Just have to look around to find a really smart design. Then when you find a good one, replicated/adapt it to the specific application (fountain pen knob). Don't always have to create a new solution. Just have a to find a great solution somewhere else and use in a different application.
btw this actually istn any new system, this has been around in the ultra cheap chinese piston filler pens such as the wingsung 698 for years
It's an idea. A well executed idea? No, they could have engineered if better. I dont like the looseness of it when it's in the locked position and the snapping noise it makes to get there.
Yeah, it works just fine but a bit sloppy
It is a problem for those of us who normally use vac fillers, and are absent minded 😂
How to fix one minor problem and introduce ten more.
Pretty sure that lockable piston has already been done by one of those cheap wing sung pens...
Nice colour but too many issues for me , good to lock piston if it lasts the life of the pen.
$75? I thought these were $52 across all websites?
$75 Canadian.... So probably $52 USD
It's an interesting idea. If the rest of the pen was nicer looking and of better quality, I'd want one. As it is, no. Edit: mabe I spoke too soon. The writing sample is fab.
In all my years using fountain pens I have never run into the problem of the piston turning. This seems just like a gimmick to me. I'd be more concerned with over-tightening the cap and cracking the acrylic body. Overall, the pen just looks cheap to me. All of that plus the amount of turns needed to uncap the pen means I'll pass. Especially at that price point.
Pffft. $75 (not for aluminum!)
Not sure why anyone who is not an engineer would bother to review pens. Great job!
My take is just one viewpoint. Doesn't mean its any more valuable than anyone else's.
Overall the construction looks really flimsy and at that price point it certainly doesn't beat any of the existing options.
Have seen the locking piston on some pens from china lately. Coincidence? 🤔😅
*_"I don't know, just don't do that"_*
Ever thought about becoming a therapist?
I figure I should probably see one instead of be one LOL
just sounds like another opportunity for the plastic pieces to crack.
Attractive pen, however appears problematic. My only experience with Monteverde was a couple years ago with a Ritma, also visually attractive, but it was not a good experience. Doesn't look like their design/QC has changed for the better. But they do have a solution in search of a problem.
I had their giant sequoia pen, absolutely gorgeous but it wasn't a great experience using it, and their ink bottle, wasn't even threaded correctly and had a sharp edge that cut my finger twisting it open...
I have a Ritma and its actually one of my favorites, stub nib is great! Whats the issue with yours? I let a friend borrow mine and he loved it so much he ordered one with the same nib too LOL
@@Doodlebud Goes back to early in my accumulation of pens, mid 2021. Pen kept burping on me. Was able to resolve with a different converter - the one that came with it would not fit snugly. Although I loved the looks and the magnetic cap, the grip section was way too slick for me. Went to storage for awhile until I gave it away.
Solving a problem that to me does not exist. I would rather just have the original Twsbi instead of this I think.
I just got one a few days ago. The pen feels like a chinese knock off Twsbi.
Looks so similar to a TWSBI
