    The supermarket duopoly in NZ means that we pay *more* for a tiny jar of peanut butter than that giant one sells for in Walmart. Last week I had to pay a dollar an egg -- and that's when I was lucky enough to actually find any eggs on the supermarket shelves.

      You can’t win anywhere! I wish it was easier to find good quality items here. And honestly when you do find the real good quality things they cost the same as NZ, so not really sure if it’s any better here 😅

      @@Becca.Loveless i'm saving to come up to the USA and travel around a bit - We want to bring my mum's ashes who passed last year at 88 - she had only ever travelled to Australia and want to show her the world and spread her ashes in the sea world wide.

    You're right - it is very cool for this kiwi to see what grocery shopping in the US is like :) Seeing the variety of chilies helps me understand why American recipes often specify which type of chili to use, in a way that doesn't make much sense in Aotearoa.

    • @Becca.Loveless
      @Becca.Loveless  ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol talking about chilies and peppers always confuses me because it feels like there are thirty different types of each! That’s why I love calling bell peppers capsicums - at least there’s one distinguished from the rest!

    Omg the chubby cheeks at the beginning - All I could think about for the whole video 😍 so crazy seeing the giant mega stores but man am I jelly of the Mexican food! Looking forward to IG food posts 😜

      We eat something Mexican inspired at least once a day 😂 and the chipmunk cheeks are too much 🥰

    Overwhelmed is the right word! I remember going into a Walmart while in Texas and feeling that way. There was even a religious section where you could get light up crosses etc. We are currently travelling down in the South Island and wow, prices are so expensive here in the smaller supermarkets! I'm glad you are finding all the goodies you want over there.

      So much variety but honestly it feels so hard to find really good quality stuff! So that’s been frustrating 😅

    So unfurnished temporary rental house in Utah?
    I also wondered if you ever had a whole house of stuff you had to declutter before you moved to New Zealand, or if you were in kind of temporary/short term housing while Billy was doing his masters and you were in New York and managed to avoid that massive "getting rid of everything I own" thing.
    What kinds of coffee do you like? I'm a coffee snob and work at a coffee roaster and know lots of options. And have done oodles of taste tests. Califia farms is one of my favorite cold brews, so good choice there. :-)

    • @Becca.Loveless
      @Becca.Loveless  ปีที่แล้ว

      We’re staying in his sister’s empty house she’s trying to sell 😂
      We did have a bunch of stuff to declutter before moving to NZ, but it was kind of similar and maybe even less than what we had in NZ. But everything we owned furniture-wise was secondhand and we lived very minimally then. Gave a lot away to family and friends.
      I don’t know what coffee beans I like here yet! I haven’t found a good one. That cold brew was pretty good! We’ve gotten some beans from Winco bulk section which I don’t like at all and some from Walmart we haven’t tried yet but I don’t have high hopes for them 😂

    I miss Walmart, the huge variety, brandnames & generic- like you say everything!
    Supacentres 👏
    Even converting NZD to USD we spent well under half on grocery shops ( once ,I'd settled in that is) 😂..
    I still remember random deals like a Mozzarella ball for 39c! What!!..think that was SCarolina. Prices vary state to state.
    Kumara prices ,in fact produce are super high in NZ at the moment.
    Downside of smaller bulk imports.
    USA, like the UK is better placed to trade more vigorously. Buggar😂😂
    You all looked happy and less stressed.
    I understand your future is topsy turvy right now however you have each other & surviving ❤🎉power to ya! Nga Mihi nui

    You have Harmons and Trader Joe’s in Utah, but Walmart is your first go to? Is that just to show the cheapest options? I will say that Trader Joe’s prices are super low especially for their organics. Miss that place so much.

    • @Becca.Loveless
      @Becca.Loveless  ปีที่แล้ว

      Walmart was also the closest. We had Trader Joes when we lived in New York and we never went unless to get avocados and peanut butter. I still dont think we know how to shop there lol.

    As a Kiwi living in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, I have to say this…..
    Yes, it’s cheaper - BUT - there is so much extra Sugar in Food here, plus, Genetically Modified Foods are EVERYWHERE…also, all Livestock here are “Grain-Fed” which of course is GMO based Feed. ANimals & Birds here are chokka full of Steroids and antibiotics - which are banned in NZ. Meat here ( US ) tastes Bland, and there is a substance called “Pink Slime” which is just nasty-arse muck, passed off as being ok for consumption - it’s the US version of Mince.
    Chemicals!!! Oh yes, the foods here are Chokka blokka full of stuff you have fun trying to pronounce and cannot be good for the digestive tract…
    Now, I’m not B.S.ing when I tell all you Happy Campers this - I was in the US of A, for just three Weeks, before I started having issues with my joints. Just weird aches and pains that I thought would go away. Uh uh…..Twenty ( 20 ) Years later - I am still watching what I eat here. My observation is this - There is so much crap, pumped into Foods here, plus the GMO stuff, that it’s affecting Americans Health. Now, you may ask what I base this on - right?
    My ex-Wife, who is NYC Queens, born and raised - was told from about the age of 7 or 8, that she had Irritable Bowel Syndrome. K? So, her Dairy intake was pretty much zero here in the US. Even when she tried as an Adult - nope - she got sick. K?
    So, we went back to NZ for a Holiday and for me to catch up with Whanau ( Family ) and go Surfing. I have always said to her, that I believed her issues were with the Food in the US, and not some Mythical Monster called “IBS” that the American FDA touted as being the cause of Millions of Americans health issues. Poor bloody people. Makes me sad the B.S that people are told here.
    Anyway, I digress - So, we are in NZ and I convince her ( and this took a bit of coercion….) to try some Ice-Cream; this was a test and she understood the implications but was willing to try her Hubby’s theory. Guess what? Yep…..no issues. So for three weeks, I have never ever, seen a person go absolutely hog-wild on Dairy. Ice-Cream, Milk, Cream, Cheese, Butter - she ate so much Dairy that I was simply stunned…and…NO ISSUES. Nada, not a HINT….of feeling bloated and or sick etc. Not one….nope.
    We return to the US……and she is convinced that maybe she’s all good now with Dairy; I of course, am telling her that I think it’s not going to go well and she should proceed with caution and try one thing first - and sparingly.
    Poor Woman - I felt bad; she had just bloody Milk - and got sick. Tried Cheese - got sick. Tried Ice-Cream and yeah. Crook as…
    I believe, that the amount of crap and Sugar put into Foods here, plus all the GMO crops, are killing Americans and or making them miserable. We are what we eat right? How is eating a bunch of Chemicals you read about on Labeling - healthy? I mean - what could possibly go wrong???
    I love the US and I am now an American Citizen, BUT…..the Food here is not Healthy - UNLESS - you shop wisely and look for Organic etc. Here’s the thing; Organic Labeled Foods, are generally more expensive - and for a lot of people, prohibitively costly - Pricing, which is very similar to the cost of Foods in New Zealand. How the hell does that work???
    “Oh, if I want to eat Healthy Organic Food - I have to earn a six figure Salary”……that’s bullpucky, but, it’s what many Americans face every day.
    Just my 5 cents worth….
    Cheers.

    • @Becca.Loveless
      @Becca.Loveless  ปีที่แล้ว

      That was more than five cents! Lol but I agree with everything you say. I try to avoid the horribly processed things and like to think of them as “food-like substances.”

    US food prices look a lot cheaper than NZ, but here in the UK prices are around half that of the US. I watched a video by Evan Edinger, an American living in the UK, he did a good comparison video, I was surprised at such a big difference as the US is a much bigger market and I expected it to be cheaper. You didn't say much about the "empty house", are you squatting in it?😂
