  • Managed Grazing - Part 2 - Animal Management - Iowa State University Extension 1995 - VID 0018 - Managed Grazing. Animal Management. The goal of managed grazing is to mutually benefit plant and animal productivity. Paddock system design and management are affected by seasonal plant growth and varying livestock nutrient requirements. This video is a guide to paddock system design and to daily grazing management decisions to make optimum use of forages. Posted with permission. This program was produced through a partnership of the Iowa State University Cooperative Extension Service, the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture and the USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program.

The better idea would be to put higher animal units in each paddock per day and then move them each day. By this calculation, you could stock 333 cows on roughly 100 acres with ample room for haying and fresh grass every day with at least a 60 day rest between grazing. Consequently, you could also stock 5 hair sheep for every cow and reduce the number of cows to 300 while adding 165 sheep. This would most effectively increase pasture quality and diversify your farm.
