Nichol's turks head cactus in the Sonoran desert, is this a valid taxon?

  • In todays episode I traverse pima county Arizona in search of Echinocactus horizonthalonius var. nicholii with a special guest, my buddy Elijah (@sunrise_cactus) as well as do some comparison with the Mexican populations of the genus I've entered whilst traveling though Coahuila, San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas Mexico. I really find myself not agreeing with so much splitting that goes on in taxonomy and as a nascent hobby botanist I am always curious and trying to gain understanding. I thought it was so cool to see these echinocactus that grow side by side with Lophophora in mexico growing with Ferocactus cylindraceus here in the American southwest. I love the Sonoran desert.

Very cool watching these plants in their environment. It makes me appreciate the cacti in my collection, home in Australia so much more. You guys are very fortunate to track around searching out these plants. Amazing plants.

in Italy there is an old saying “the sun kisses the beautiful” …. and indeed these sun-kissed desert plants are beautifully gorgeous.
Thanks for these pictures and greetings from Tuscany

Nice video. I have one in my collection but they are painfully slow to grow. But they are nice.

I've seen these growing in Pima Co. near the Waterman Mts, and by the Silverbell mine, but I haven't seen an area where they grow this dense. Were you in Pinal or Pima Co.? If it was in Pima Co., was it near the areas I mentioned?

Not all limestone forms in the sea. The only way to know forsure is if you can see indicator fossils, or if you mapped the overlying and underlying units and the sequence is indicative of an ancient sea.
also the limestones usually don’t form at the “bottom” of the sea, the bottom of the sea is where you’ll mostly get your fine grained deposits such as shale, mudstones, etc.

I need to do a deep dive into it. I find fossils sometimes more so in some areas than others.

it’s hard to recommend where to start, sedimentation and stratigraphy is usually the last upper level class someone takes for a BS in geology.
which is were geologists learn the most about limestones.
I would say reading a book on geomorphology and surface process would really help with learning about sed strat with respect to limestones.
sorry not trying to be a dick 😅, these things just get me going, as a geologist. limestones are pretty complex things and there are people who dedicate their lives to studying limestones.

You should definitely not take any plants out of their environments. Anyone who loves and appreciates plants would leave them as they are.

I see from some of your previous videos that you make your own pots. Do you use a wheel or hand-build such as through coil? At first I thought to buy some nice pots for staging two of my cacti, but then I thought "why don't I just make it myself?" I'm thinking to try my hand at making the pots but it's going to be a learning curve. To get your crackle texture pots, you paint the glaze on to unfired clay right? I would think so because after bisque firing the clay is no longer malleable. Of course I am no where near using a propane torch yet! ^^
