Mushu and songs aside, what made animated Mulan so beautiful was the growth she experienced. She didn't know to fight, martial arts weren't her world. She was clumsy and not perfect at all. She worked hard to become who she was in the end. And in the end she still wasn't the best fighter, she made it through the war with her clever ideas, spontanous yet smart plans and intelligence. Her journey and growth was the coolest part of the movie because you were rooting for her. Here she's been a warrior since she was a kid, so basically was a perfect fighter when she joined the army. No growth necessary, it's already done. What kind of message is that? In the original it's ''you don't have to be perfect right away, you can become the best version of yourself by discipline and working on yourself''. Not ''hey you have to be perfect from day 1''. Original mulan was more relatable, this one's not at all.

Although, the Mulan tales - tell of her father teaching her Kungfu. She learns it well. Taking KungFu and then relating it to Military moves is not far fetched. One translates what one knows into military movements.
I was laughing so hard. Yeah, you can see how the 1998 Mulan really persevered to get there. 2020 Mulan is just trying to hide her strong chi and then coming out.
I wish people actually did their homework before commenting, I don’t blame any of you for not since almost all people are ignorant nowadays, but this film is the furthest thing from the original message of the ballad. The cartoon nailed the message of perseverance and a woman being able to do what a man can do, exploring your identity, and how men and women can play off of each other to be better. The live action took all of that away, it stripped the message of mulan, in this film mulan is just naturally good, she’s gifted, she didn’t have to work to get better. In the ballad and the animated film mulan was just a normal girl wanting to live her life and uphold her family honor, she had to work and persevere to get better. So when you say that this version of mulan is more accurate than the animated one then you’re disrespecting the original ballad and meaning behind it. Harsh words that needed to be said since most people here are wrong on so many levels.

Actually, I dont mind ppl liking this version, but I hate it when they say it is like the 1998 version, that they followed chinese og version, the message is more feminist, mulan is like that in chinese movies, or that it was done to pander to chinese audience or the chinese government.

About the realism of her not being discovered, you can say that they never imagined it being a thing to look out for since no woman has ever done that before, or she was really good at faking it, or just the clark kent effect

She encourages people who watch her to be the best version of themselves and don't care what others say because everyone one has her/his own way in this life .
The problem is she doesn’t grow at all. She starts out practically perfect. She doesn’t learn to be a good fighter, she just starts out as one. Her message is basically you can do anything if you are born perfect.

It is very inspirational she decided to go back to the troupe as Mulan and show who she really was and ready to accept the consequences and die as her true self. It is a beautiful emancipation story and a journey of self and purpose discovery.

This is very inaccurate to Chinese culture and lore, and the actress that played Mulan doesn't care about the police brutality in China. This is Disney's worst live action movie yet.

I watched this yesterday..very touching and beautiful movie..a lot of differences from the animated film.but equally entertaining and brilliant.
the visuals are stunning. The cast is really good. But i really missed the message for a (not chi super powered) normal girl that strenght can be replaced by cleverness. Personally I was really disappointed that Mulan seemingly doesnt care for her family, just for "honour"

It’s not that, it’s what they did with the character. The original Mulan was about a strong, valiant woman who desired to be taken seriously by others in a culture that saw woman as merely house wives. It showed that no matter what obstacles may come your way, if you persevere and work hard enough, you can achieve your goals. It was able to accomplish this without virtue signaling. This theme made it an inspiration to little girls and boys. We got to see Mulan go from a common maiden who wasn’t even suitable for a Husband ( Something extremely dishonorable to her culture), to watching her overcome obstacles that a lot of her male counterparts couldn’t.... And she used her wits, not brute strength. On top of that, it was her friends and love interest who helped her defeat the antagonist, showing both Genders need each other to succeed. This new movie is trash, because there is no character development and Mulan is basically a superhero. She didn’t work hard and train for her talent, it was literally given to her at birth. The whole lead up was executed poorly.

The movie sucked! I was expecting this movie to blow me away but it didn't i was looking forward to it but it turned out shit. Like her acting was terrible especially the part where she left her home to go to war you left no emotion the acting was bad and the story was rushed and had nothing special at all. They should have picked a different actor to play mulan maybe one who actually knew how to act

The visuals are stunning. I guess the fighting scenes dont have to be realistic. But sadly the movie is not realistic, too. Just watching a superpower woman using her superpower chi. And another superpower witch not using her powers, so she needs someone else.
watched it in the cinema yesterday and guess what, they removed all songs that were in the original one. I was kinda disappointed when scenes come without the songs. Other than that the movie was incredible and I got emotional in the end.

Lolo M they warned people ahead of time when it was being made that there would be no songs in it no mushu. And that it would be much more historically accurate to the ballad of mulan aka hua mulan the one the animated one disregarded the animated one was too westernized for the Chinese. The live action one should do better for the Chinese money wise
G Mitch nope because there was no lucky bug and dragon in the original ballad of mulan in hua mulan. Cricket is now a human but he’s still lucky. And the dragon/mushu is now a Phoenix that doesn’t talk. A lucky bug and mushu aren’t historically accurate to the original Chinese ballad of mulan the live action one is more historically accurate the live action one is a much more darker story but it still has a happy ending in a way since it’s you know done by Disney

This isn't the real Mulan, there was no witch in the real Mulan and in the poem she served the army for 10 years and she wasn't recognized as a woman in that time.

No it isn't, my gosh why are these people in the comments so stupid "Oh wow it's so good because it's not animated, meaning it's for adults and it's soo realistic, and also based on the "Real" mulan!" None of those are true. Animation is simply a form of storytelling, there are plenty of serious adult cartoons, it is not realistic in any way, there's a phoenix, chi superpowers, and a fucking witch. Also there is no real mulan, it's all inspired by a poem, which is nothing like either of the movies.

Im honestly surprised that noone comment on how the actress looks stiff af. She carried the same motionless expression throughout the movie.
She did smile when she saw her sister again. There were subtle expressions in her eyes here and there. Plus, what do you expect her to look like during all these fight scenes? Silly smiles or exaggerated looks?

The elements of piety, loyalty, courage and true are there, the rest are just components of story telling. This is well made for 2020 in my opinion. I especially like the contrast of Mulan vs Witch, same but different due to different chosen path.
I missed the worth of family here. Original Mulan really cared about her family, and they cared for each other. But new Mulan is too formal. Just to bring honor. Just to protect. I cannot see the charakters intention in here.
As for the witch: she has the power to became emperor by herself. She could kill everyone she wants to. Her intention is to be recogniced as a worthy woman, but needs a arrogant soldier to get there???n

I love the first fighting scene
Fighting is something this movie is really good in. They trained enough for their roles. But I would like to see how they got the "walking on a wall" scenes. I bet the actors felt like geckos. Mulans kicks are remarkable.
I somehow feel the fighting scenes are the only thing I will remember. Where is the great charakter evolving in this difficult time? I am not sure what the deeper meaning of Mulan is,I mean--what can the movie teach you....?

@@evelic That's not fair to say. It's to help make up for the money that they couldn't make during COVID-19. The $30 is equivalent to a family going the cinemas which is what would of happened.. The budget is $200 million and they need to try and earn that money and possibly more in the box office. I bought Mulan on Disney Plus and it is a one time payment. You can watch is as many times as you want, wherever you want. Besides, if you really hate the cost, you can wait until December 4th where you can stream it without paying
They say it will be available for free on Disney+ on December 3rd. Not too much longer to wait.

Just because you throw a temper tantrum does not mean you are going to become kung-fu champion in a moment. Even the Disney animation was more realistic. At least animation could nicely show the time passing. Here within a second she changed from a novice to a master.

I have depression bc I try to help a man do his work bc no other woman in the business wants to help him do hard work, so I was ridiculed for being a "man" bc I'm a woman. I have depression bc of their constant judgement, after watching this movie I cried, bc it takes a loyal, brave, and true woman to work/fight aside a man. I do a man's job, and I'm a tiney woman doing very heavy lifting, but, in my eyes no man should do their hard work alone.
The original movie does a much better job than this.

Just watched 2009 Chinese version. It's really really good! The story is much more attractive and realistic . Much better than the Disney version which honestly is only for kids.

I like the visuals in Disney's 2020 Mulan, but story wise, Mulan 2009 is much better.
