  • The Souvenir: Joanna Hogg & Tom Burke Interview
Many films go into their Sundance world premieres with no distribution. Joanna Hogg's The Souvenir, on the other hand, debuted at the festival with A24 having bought the North American rights to the film and also knowing that the sequel will go into production this summer. The Souvenir marks the very first lead role for Tilda Swinton's daughter, Honor Swinton-Byrne. She plays Julie, a young woman enrolled in film school who doesn't quite know who she is yet, who crosses paths with a mysterious man named Anthony, played by Tom Burke. Julie falls so hard for Anthony that before she knows it, she's detached from her friends, lets Anthony borrow money whenever he pleases, and is essentially doing everything she can to serve his needs - even if it's at her own expense.
During the Sundance Film Festival, Hogg and Burke took some time to swing by the Collider Studio to talk about their experience making the film. They dove into the semi-autobiographic nature of the story, what it was like for Burke to play someone so arrogant and manipulative, the process of casting Swinton-Byrne as Julie, what the Sundance debut meant for the Souvenir sequel, and so much more. You can hear about it all in this video interview.

AHH! So she DID shoot in story order. Another filmgoer and I had a big debate about this after the show. It definitely allowed the intimacy between the characters to grow in a well catered to way. Very interesting

Yes she filmed mostly in order.
I was blessed not only to play Ray the intruder but I was consultant on both of the films, working with Joanna, Tom, The art department and the DOP in creating an authentic look.
Joanna launched my consulting career. I was 18 months clean and sober when we met and I'm eternally grateful for her support and trust.

weeks after i saw this movie in the theater, and i loved it so much. Such a compassionate masterpiece and it's illuminating to hear them talk about how they made this movie together and the director's vision and passion and what it means to her.... gives insight into what created this magic ...by the end of it i was going : i've never seen anything quite like this before.
One thing i loved is that the more the movie went on, i started to hate him, and then at a certain point....i was amazed how that all fell away and his character is really being seen as he really is, even for a brief time. So moving. And how both characters are relieved and in a way gifted by the love of that. All the more heartbreaking, the ending. 💜🌌

Jo and Tom put a lot of love and trust into me and helped launch my career as a Consultant in films.
I was 18 months clean and sober when i started working with her.
Im forever grateful to her for helping me launch my career.

[spoilers] The subtlety, intelligence and humanity of Tom Burke’s nuanced performance is remarkable. I knew nothing about the film when I saw it, but in Anthony’s first scene with Julie it was apparent from his first, seemingly banal utterance that there was something very wrong and that he couldn’t be trusted. Despite every manipulation and every act of harm and deceit (culminating in Julie’s illness, which was quietly horrifying) Tom still did enough to make Anthony’s death seem utterly tragic.

The bit with Julie getting ill...there was something I wasn't clear about. Was that scene implying she caught an STD from him, or was it just simply that chaperoning him around on his furtive errands caused her to catch the flu or something?
