Quite apart from the morality, why would you scream racial slurs at someone FOR BEING THE SAME RACE AS THE OWNER and then expect the owner to be on your side? That's some poor planning, there.

I'm white/Latino, so I'm a little ignorant about the delicacies of racism, thought I'm trying to learn. But even if that was a factor, which it clearly wasn't, what this guy did was definitely not the right way to go about it. Stalking and getting that aggressive with someone was not going to win him any sympathy from anyone, and it doesn't educate anybody about racial profiling. But more likely, this guy was just a complete A-hole who happened to be black, just like OP was a confused customer who happed to be white, and he trivialized a real issue in the process.

    • @Flowerpotpowerrrrr

@@AnimaMandala This topic isn't something I can ever see as trivialized, I will always see it as something deeper. Something that hasn't really been addressed in the comments, is the likelihood of him having been through this before. The more you go through something negative, with a common denominator, the more you expect it, and the nastier you're expected to react. I can see it be weaponized for nothing though; and he has my sympathy for the aforementioned likelihood, not his anger.

There is a possibility (NOT certainty, simply possibility) that the guy was actually shoplifting, and he was waiting by the door for a chance to run. Then he gets a "gift from the gods," as it were, by way of this person not knowing if he worked there. He creates a scene, plays the race card, and then as a result of the confusion makes a clean getaway.
I am basing this solely on others' experiences that have been posted on videos with similar stories, wherein they have stated that shoplifters will create a scene in order to effect an easier escape.

Something like this happened to me a few times, always from the same guy. He and his family would come through the self checkout and he would (very loudly) accuse me of thinking he's stealing because he's black if I look in there general direction. Hell, I remember one time something fell off a shelf in a nearby aisle, and his first instinct was to look at me and go off when I naturally look towards the sound of the item falling. I'll never understand the 'you can't speak a foreign language in America' mindset. I mean, yes, it's a very good idea to be able to speak English if you live or are visiting here, but people speak other languages to friends or family or whatever all the time. I live in the northern part of California; it's not the most super-diverse area, but I don't think I've gone a week of my life while living here without hearing someone speaking Spanish, or a foreign tourist speaking French or German, or an Asian family up from the city speaking Chinese or Japanese to each other. I suppose it could be possible the waiter had already asked when the family was first seated if they would be okay for getting strangers also seated there, because the place was full and they didn't take all the seats and the waiter had guessed it would probably become something needed soon anyway.
But the fact that the mother of the family seems to have been totally blind to the fact that the Chinese girl came with a white American girl and they both sat down, and presumably looked as being together when it comes to their body language is also a bit odd. Well, I suppose it's possible she was somebody who actually had some sort of real mental issues. A nightmare for rest of that family as something like that would presumably happen pretty often whenever they tried to go somewhere all together as a family. And they maybe had to "rescue" the mother fairly often from all types of situations every time she left the house. 😆

Chinese restaurant story: Good grief, that woman was so incredibly entitled and racist she wouldn't even listen to her own family telling her she was wrong. She's lucky the owner only told her and her family to leave and didn't call the police to have her officially trespassed.
Best Buy story: Last time I checked the uniform at Best Buy was a light blue polo and slacks. A black tee and basketball shorts certainly doesn't match their uniform. Even if OP was a new hire who hadn't been given his uniform yet, he would have been told to dress more professional than that. After his arrest the jerk needed to be seen by an optometrist.
Thrift store story: Definitely racist and another one that needs a trip to the optometrist. Also who is she that thinks THRIFT STORES carries different sizes of shoes in the back? That's not how thrift stores work.
Red shirt story: IMO the guy in the shirt was being racist. He refused to accept an apology or listen to an explanation.

For that last story, while I get being tired of being asked if I worked somewhere because of my race or because I wore certain clothing, OP had one really solid reason that provides the context as to why they thought he worked there: the notebook, and standing right next to the stockroom. Plus, going by OP’s account, they were polite, and didn’t do anything like snap in their face or be disrespectful. It sounds like the guy was tired of being asked, but instead of listening, he kinda just took it out on OP, which isn’t very fair, but there may be a lead up to the guy just being done. Once the fathers of one of my classmates dropped by the house for something school related (many parents would often pitch in to help out whenever there were school events and festivals - so this was fairly common). Dad was at work, so mom answered the door and...he asked her if her employer was around.
To be fair, mom had been in the middle of doing housework, so that likely contributed to the assumption and he was extremely apologetic once she explained that she was not a maid and was in fact my mother. That being said, he probably wouldn't have made that assumption if mom had been Caucasian.
