I have a 1986 Martin D-28 that I bought new. After 10 years the tone was phenomenal and 10 years after better and 10 years after better and now almost 40 years just so sweet! Love Love it… 💕🎼💕
Listening to you tell that story was as dazzling as hearing you play. 50 yrs ago, Bernie and I often found ourselves on the same band. He was ALWAYS playin' something different! He was way better than me, too. ☺️🎸
For 8 or 9 years I worked for the business that was the Western Australian Martin Importer/Supplier I've sold and played hundreds of Martins new out of the box and old. There is definitely something amazing about the old pre-war instruments, the golden era that is pretty much incomporable. Having said that though I heard newer ones change a lot for the better after a few years of playing. IMO they're still building some excellent instruments. You play so expressively that it always sounds lovely in your hands.
Hey Shannon ✨ Thank you for this video in the series ! I bought my latest guitar as a 'mid life crisis' treat.....it's an electro-acoustic Sigma, very Martin in appearance, only to find out recently that Sigma was once owned by Martin , and released as a line of guitars at affordable prices. Stay Safe as Always ☮🕊☯🧡✨🎄🎅🏻🦌
Here’s an old trick to help a guitar “break in” First, Put your guitar on a stand and place a speaker in front of and behind the guitar. Pick out some music to play and hit the repeat button at the relative volume of a live stage situation. Next, go to Europe for about six weeks and tour, and when you return your new guitar should sound as though you’ve been playing it for a year or so. It’s all about vibration with acoustics, and believe it or not, this works. I just acquired a 1971 OOO18 from a friend who passed, and I’m one payment away from bringing it home. I can’t wait to take it into the studio. Good luck, and play pretty.
The string tension is less than an OM-28 making a OOO Martin slightly easier to press the strings & bend them . Prefer electric guitars myself , but acoustics are fine . You are beautiful .
My favourite acoustic! I bought mine when it was three or four years old I guess. So, fairly new, but played and loved a lot. Fortunately these break in relatively fast. The sound is absolutely amazing. Especially when you really dig in. I own a J-45 that needed 12 years to sound as good as it does (and believe me when I say it sounds glorious - the warmest sounding J-45 ever! 😊). I guess what I’m trying to say is they don’t necessarily need to be real vintage instruments to sound as good as one. But I understand. I’ve always wanted to have a good guitar from my year of birth. Unfortunately I’m rather vintage myself (1967), so for someone like me, having a dream like that, it’s pretty unobtainable. Although I recently played a 1967 Martin 0-18. A friend of mine purchased it for a ridiculously low price, because it needed A LOT of work. But he was fortunate enough to know a luthier who was willing do do all of that work in change for some studio time (my friend runs a small studio). When I saw that guitar I fell in love with it and it still haunts me in my dreams. One day… Anyway, I love your work. Greetings from the Netherlands. 🧡🧡🧡
so true! this has already started to feel so much better, just needed some playing! i love a j-45 also... might be my next purchase, but not anytime soon!
They're super sweet guitars. I got a 00-18 I love. As for picks, I can't play with a pick at all. When I was first learning guitar, I kept dropping them in the soundhole, and I got annoyed and quit using them. Been playing with my fingers ever since.
Great vid. I do have some guitars but I also managed to sell a few again (one semi acoustic actually got stolen). My favorites are a 10string classical and an Aria pro ll. Apart from that it seems all kinds of instruments just keep coming to me like some people end up with a bunch of cats. Take care and all the best.
Ive had 15 guitars but part exchanged each one so i only have two at a time, recently my latest a blue lava touch.modern, amazing sound but now I need a martin so put my blue lava up for sale , love yours 🇬🇧🙌❤️
Just bought a Martin O-18 from Alyssa at Russo’s in Philly. So e-z to play. Fast action and so much sound out of this little instrument. BTW you sound great.
Hi Shannon. Today I Drove to a Shop in the Uk called richtone music to trade in my Headrush MX5 and to check out a Jackson x guitar. But when I eventually felt at the guitar I immediately thought ist not Right. Compared to my own modified guitar it felt heavy and clumsy. I think that at the end of the day Colour doesn't matter and many guitars that you initially fancy seem not to sync with you conception of how they should be. To me its like pickin the best of bad bunch or am I a bit 🎸 Guitar crazy 🤣😧😊 and got a critical case of GAS. Anyway have fun 😉😊 and keep on knocking out them groovy 😜 tunes. John.
I've been playing 45 years but am not a professional and I wish I could say "yeah, 30 guitars? Pfft, yeah I'm lousy with guitars like that..." but I can't because I'm married and have kids who knock things over. I can relate to having a guitar show up as a gift though: I had a Larrivee OM arrive on my doorstep about 19 years ago that was really humbling. Like with your Martin, my Larrivee was not originally to my liking so I got it set up and added some upgrades and not it's like a comfortable pair of boots. I don't think either of us are "vintage" though - "distressed" is probably a more accurate word!
I actually have two Martin 000 18s. First one is a 1951 that my dad bought when he was in the service. The second is a 2021 that I bought a few years ago. Awesome guitars!!!
I use the ToneRite device on my Martin 000-28ec and my classical guitar (set at various volumes). Really opens up the new guitar after 100 hours. It is also great for warming up the guitar if it has been sitting in its case.
Your speaking to someone that ordered and returned over 20 electric guitars from Guitar Center. I really like the Gibson HP Wide Necks. Guitar Center has a 45 day return policy, and offers up to 3 years of warranty on Gibson guitars.
Hey, Shannon. Since you have the opportunity to really play several guitar models; can you tell me your thoughts on this 000-18 as compared to perhaps, if you have one, the 000-28. Basically between the mahogany and the rosewood.
Hi Shannon ! I have a Martin DM 1998 tone is great. Like your playing and your discussion about your guitars. I have recently played a D-18, D-28, HD-28, D-35, and a 000-15SM. They were all wonderful in different ways. Have you played any of these other Martin model's that you liked ? I never played the 000-18 Martin. Yours sounds great ! Thank you !
@shannonlcallihan Thanks for your reply Shannon ! I hope your future in Music remains brighter than ever. You are talented and I am wishing you the very best ! I am looking to upgrade guitars. Have played a Gibson J-45 and Hummingbirds, Taylor's, and Guild's also. Wish I could have them all. The one I have not found to play is the D-45 Guild. The D-20 and D-40 were amazing sounding guitar's ! I am taking my time in the journey. Any thought's you have on any of these other acoustic guitar's mentioned are welcome. Have a sweet week ! Thank you ! ✌️
Congrats!! Is this a 2024 model? I just got my first Martin earlier this year, a 2023 000-18, sans LR Baggs p'up. I'll record at home, but I have no plans to bring it to a live gig. It's definitely a buy-it-for-life (BIFL) guitar. 😁
I only have only 22 guitars including a D35. The thing is I got them all used. I have sold some and bought some. These are works of design art really and a quality one will go up in value. You cannot lose if you choose wisely. Think that say you pay $1200 for a guitar and keep it ten years that is only 10$ a month. How much fun otherwise did you have for ten bucks last month. Furthermore in ten years if it is good you can get your money back or more. Buying good guitars is a no brainer if you play them and buy the right instrument
I bought my Martin D 18 brand new this past January, about halfway through what has been a couple of years of deep crisis: disaster, loss, abuse, and trauma. I was reeling with the mother of all CPTSD emergencies, and my former employer decided to aggressively pursue my termination. They were aware that I was suffering Real torment and mental anguish, refused medical documentation meant to show an established history of treatment, and then fired me with no severance or healthcare…for playing my guitar on my unpaid lunch break where other people could potentially see me if they went looking for me. Literally that was the final excuse after six months of coming up with reasons to document and build a case against me: my final offense was playing that guitar. So I took my Martin out to the street with me and it took on the exact same level of abuse that I've been taking on and then some. I turned it into a shop in Brooklyn after I narrowly avoided homelessness: I'd begun sleeping out on the on purpose a few days a week: I figured if I was going to be homeless I better learn how to Live that way, so I went out and practiced. The guitar was rained on cried on, beaten and banged on (what a greet drum), bled on, dropped, cracked, and held onto for dear life. Told them to get the fretboard as playable as possible and leave every cosmetic scar exactly as it was: I'm literally launching my brand with it when I get it returned. It is a one of a kind piece of art that has pieces of my soul beaten into it in the streets of NYC, as I howled in agony and outrage and pain: and soaked in some of the most profoundly beautiful connections I experienced with people from all walks of life. I’m going to add custom artwork and write some poetry and snippets of lyrics all over it, then build in LED lighting to visually enhance my story , and bundle it with some NFT video content, and market that as my introductory piece for my new life as a working multimedia artist, performer, and entertainer. Thank you for mention the dings and scratches: every single mark on mine really mean something: and I think that's really why someone like yourself appreciates the little swings and arrows that get thrown into a working instrument all the time and the marks behind: the wood changes over time and every all solid wood guitar eventually developed its own unique tone: I went ahead and accelerate that process a bit… lol. All the best beautiful work.
The 000 size is a little smaller, lighter and easier to handle than the D. Mine is a 000/28 12-fret Norman Blake 2005. I keep it in Open D usually for the full resonance.
I am blown away by how well you play! 👊🏾Thanks for sharing !
thanks so much!
love the LLRBaggs & your good buddy getting this beauty for you! love your style!❤
thank you!

You are just amazing!❤️❤️❤️
very cool sounding guitar! xo
So somebody just gave you a 00018!? Must be nice. It took me years to save up for mine. They’re very balanced guitars. Great for recording.
Great talent, sounds wonderful, new friend, Greetings. Fernando 💯👍
thanks!
Feels like home❤
You're so cool, could listen to you play all day. Very John Mayer Neon

I’d love to play that 1951 Martin !!!

30+ !!!!! Dawg I have 13 and I thought I was bad 😂. Will say I don’t have a martin😢. My only acoustic is a 1930 National Resonator.

Never ending cycle … true
The Martin 000 15 m is nice too. But they have jumped in price.
The ES-125 is a great old guitar but aren't they f-hole electrics?
