I'm a retired auto tech of 48 years with a racecar background. This video is the best instructional video I have seen. You definitely are very good at what you are doing. Thank you for putting this video and many others together.
Thank you for your time making this video. We bought a 2015 Forester new with the 580 CVT, our first experience with CVTs. From new there was a 2-3 second delay when shifting from forward to reverse or forward. First experience with CVT we though it was rather inconvenient but a trait of theirs transmission design. At 99,975 miles we got the light show on the dash and after reading the codes ordered a valve body from Subarupartsdeals. After watching this video 2 times I replaced the valve body. The shift delay is gone and the mileage seems to have increased a bit. I appreciate you giving the parts numbers and the torque values in the video. You made this a quite easy repair and saved us a bunch of money. Thank you.

Just wanted to thank you so much because your video enabled me to get the valve body out of my 2014 XV Crosstrek. I had mistakenly removed the two nuts not knowing which silver screws to remove. But after watching your video it was clear, and I was able to remove it. So thanks again.
Thanks man, I bought just the solenoid on eBay and did it today. Fixed it! Had a little extra fluid around, recently did a 5 quart change. Just added it in the top. Easy way I found to get the cover off was used the ground wire bolt with the 12mm head and fasten down the box end of a wrench and pull up. If you do just the solenoid be prepared for the ground connector to break. Ez fix on that though.
Thanks for this info, I just had these codes show up yesterday on my 2013 outback with 113k miles on it. Do you have any links for what solenoid is needed or links to a video? Ironically I just did a double CVT fluid flush a month ago. I am pretty handy with a TH-cam video helping me lol.
Do you mind if I ask what your symptoms were for your bad solenoid? I'm considering this as a potential fix myself for extreme delayed shifting and gear slippage at stops. Can you replace just the solenoid, or do you need to buy the entire valve body assembly like the video shows?
Great video. Some small differences for my 2015 Outback Limited (no pitch stopper, but it does have the bracket), TCM is on top of the valve body cover, and the wiring harness includes ALL of the associated wires, so you can't just disconnect the cables and lift the cover off. So what I did was once I could remove the cover, I disconnected the connecter inside the VB, unscrewed the round connector on the top of the cover, and fished the connector up through. Just about everything else was identical. Saved me a significant amount of $$$. Thanks for the video!

This video is a lifesaver. I just had my 2012 Subaru with the TR580 CVT throw codes P0700 and P2764 over the weekend. We were 100 miles from home, and my son in law rented a car hauler and picked us up from the side of the road, so I drove less than 8 miles (to find a pull off on a 2 lane highway) after the car started throwing errors. Once I was home and in the garage, I pulled the codes. This morning the local Subaru dealer told me for these codes it would be $5000 to replace both the valve body and torque converter, claiming that the torque converter had to be coming apart to cause the valve body solenoid failure. From this video and others, it sure seems the dealer is feeding me some bull. I am mostly happy to see that the valve body can be replaced without having the car on a lift, meaning I can do it myself. Could there be any truth to what the dealer told me over the phone about the torque converter falling apart and causing this code? The car only has 115K miles on it...

Except in Canada, Subaru won't sell a valve body to anyone but a dealer. I needed a new valve body for my impreza but I couldn't procure a valve body from anyone. If I had the time, I might have been able to source one from the US. Basically, if you need a valve body up here, it's set up so you have to get the work done by a dealer. But this video would have set me up to do it myself. Next time.
Is the relearning procedure that's in the CVT fluid change video necessary? I suspect mine is going bad, and the cost of everything combined (from a shop) is painful. I don't even have a proper scan tool either. Do you have one you would recommend that won't kill the wallet?
Hi Mr. Subaru, My car is Subaru Forester 2014, it shows light on Check Engine, At Oil Temp (Flashing), ABS, Hill Assistant, Stable Drive. Scan tools shows P2764, P0700 ($7E8 and $7E9). It is TR580 CVT fluid. I plan to change the solenoid or in case will replace a valve body. I have a question: Must I change the transmission fluid after the valve body/ solenoid replacement? Since I will do replacement by myself, and drive the car to Subaru mechanic and let them change the fluid. Thanks for your videos too!
Question my friend. I just did the replacement but I still have the code p700. I don’t have failure on driving but code still pop up. What could it be?
Great to know about Subaru parts pro deals Robert, darn it I sure wish I waited on that back half of the air filter cover it’s the back half the MAF screws into and what happened is the little retaining clip for the power steering hose broke off on me ,I ordered it from elk Grove Subaru it took those clowns three months to get but then again maybe there’s a backorder situation on certain parts for SOA?
I was just quoted $2,307 to get this done. Found parts on a Subaru’s webpage and cut out labor would legit save me $1,300. My question is does this overlap to the 2017 Subaru Legacy? That’s what I drive.

I have the same problem with my Subaru Crosstrek 2019 but the problem is reprogramming question is, does it come already plug and play or would have to program it after installation?

This is also another good example ( as All of your video's are ) of why in the eyes of just about any dealership *You Will Never Be a Good Service Tech For Them.* You will Never make enough money to satisfy them. *Wear This Like A Badge Of Honor". They charge $150/hr. for full book hrs but demand the tech slam the job out in half time or less. You are too Thorough and Focused . . . as you should be and . . . We hope you never change. They want $peed at a level which *cannot be done unless the tech cuts every corner possible* for maximum profit and in many cases afterwards the car Is Still As Broke as when it came in. On top of that you may find something else is broke or is breaking soon after. Gotta Love Little Johnny . . . The tech's are pissed that they don't make enough $$$ and . . . probably don't. Nationwide they are perhaps in need of 3,000 tech's and many of those who are still on the job need to be Closely Re Evaluated and/or Retrained. Also, some sort of Local Gov't QC Insp. for Dealership Repairs needs to be created and I mean $$$ome kind of QC with Teeth in it. *But That's Just Me and My Stupid Way of Thinking*

Stop the juice, too much power man!
how did you recover from this issue? new transmission or bore out a larger screw?
Except in Canada, Subaru won't sell a valve body to anyone but a dealer. I needed a new valve body for my impreza but I couldn't procure a valve body from anyone. If I had the time, I might have been able to source one from the US. Basically, if you need a valve body up here, it's set up so you have to get the work done by a dealer. But this video would have set me up to do it myself. Next time.
Your the man! You saved me $1100.00. Great video, thanks a bunch
I have a 2010 Subaru Impreza outback sport! Great vids!
Great video! I managed to wiggle everything out without removing the throttle body though. 2014 Forester 2.5i
You can actually leave the throttle body in place. There's plenty of room. Good job!
agree, I did the same. But its probably worth cleaning that thing anyway!
Making Subaru Parts Deals my go to website. Thanks bruv
Is the relearning procedure that's in the CVT fluid change video necessary? I suspect mine is going bad, and the cost of everything combined (from a shop) is painful. I don't even have a proper scan tool either. Do you have one you would recommend that won't kill the wallet?
With P0971 valve body Code is ok at drive about 50 miles before the repair is made trying to save money on a $250 tow bill
What are those pliers you use at 6:30? Look like some time savers!
I’ll use them for my 60k service! Thanks!
Question my friend. I just did the replacement but I still have the code p700. I don’t have failure on driving but code still pop up. What could it be?
What symptoms were you experiencing that prompted this repair? Codes don’t always show immediately. Thanks.
Any recommendations to remove the cover if it didn’t come off so easy?
Do we need to do the relearn after the valve body replacement?
I was just quoted $2,307 to get this done. Found parts on a Subaru’s webpage and cut out labor would legit save me $1,300.
My question is does this overlap to the 2017 Subaru Legacy? That’s what I drive.
Great vids MRSUBARU, helped me isolate the problem with an XV i have here in Australia. Unfortunately Subaru Parts Deals dont ship internationally, another very similar name Subaru Parts Deal dont either. The latter did a kit version with all your parts & oil listed for a very reasonable price. Here's an example of how we're being royally shafted here in Aust, i've done the $ conversion for the valve body alone our local stealer asking $2,480 USD .. sad but true
I have a 2015 Subaru Outback 3.6 and its leaking from the the transmission pump gasket...is this a frequent issue?
Also, if I am doing this, should I also do the valve body replacement as a while your in there repair? The valve body seema to come up often as a item of concern...
You don’t have a traveling mobile company they call you when you come fix their car I wish something like that existed I know it’s an old video yet it helps me out
Question, if you have a 2014 Crosstrek that's approaching 190k and still on factory transmission, would you do this proactively? I know it's expensive, but getting stranded would be more expensive.
what was a reason for replace of that big part, how this fail influ the behaviour of cvt?
One question where the Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid goes.
You told me about SybaryPartsDeals the same day my 2007 Forester blew it's Fel-Pro head gaskets. Nice timing, Mr. Subaru!
Hi MrSubaru
I have own a 2016 Subaru Impreza the car have problem Valve Body my question is after you install Vale Body did you have to reprogram the transmission?
Thankyou hope to here from you soon
Fantastic! Subaru replaced my valve body a few years ago and now the seal is leaking transmission fluid. I'm going to replace the gasket using your excellent instruction and I will replace the CVT fluid also. But I'm not touching the valve box so will I have to do any reprogramming?
For the TR690 and the Throttle Body, can you just undo the 4 x 10mm bolts and remove the Throttle abody without clamping off the coolant hoses? I want to clean the full T.B. and replace the gasket withiut havinf to buy two hose clamps
How long should the transmission itself last after replacing the valve body?
From what I've heard replacing the valve body adds another 100k+ miles to the lifespan, as long as you replace the fluid every 30k miles.
Can you fill the trans through the valve body cover so I don't have to use a pump? I'ma already changing the valve body anyway
I have the same problem with my Subaru Crosstrek 2019 but the problem is reprogramming question is, does it come already plug and play or would have to program it after installation?
A very large thank you! Just did my 2015 Outback similar to what you did. All is well
After valve body replacement can 2018 Subaru Outback drive 25 miles to dealer to do transmission fluid change and relearn? I’m concerned transmisión won’t work without relearn.
Where can get the wire harness disconnect tool?
Great detailed video. One question I have before I start this job...I noticed when the pan cover was being put back on, I didn't see a new gasket put down. I only saw him put the black sealant on the bottom surface. Did I miss something?
Do you have to drain the fluid to change the internal harness? Mine is pinched
Question, The waning lights (matching combination related to this issue) only came on once in my 2013 Impreza 2.0L Limited. It has been a week since the issue and all ok so far. No limp mode, warning lights etc. I have not had it scanned yet (OBD tested). Could it also be due a faulty switch stop lamp (only question is the AT Temp light was on)? Any feedback would be great. Thanks
I have codes p0971 c1431 c1411 c1957 c1956 c1742 c1741 on 2017 Subaru Outback. Today out of nowhere christmas tree dash appeared. Drove fine. 170,000 miles never touched transmission. Is sensor or valve body on top or bottom on my 2.5i? Ive seen videos where it seems to be both maybe? Going to try myself. I am mechanically inclined and have all the torque wrenches etc to reassemble.
You saved me so much money and time.... thank you!
I'm trying figure out whether get full valve body or solenoid, but are all those solenoids different or use same part number? i have p0971
is there any need to add CVT fluid if we don't do a full fluid exchage? doesn't seem like you lost much fluid just replacing the valve body.
will i need to take my subaru to the dealer to do a computer relearn or will it adjust on its own?
thanks for the video!
I have a 2015 Subaru forester with a P0700 & P2757, what should I do to fix it? Thank you!!!!!!!
What tools do you need for this? My 2011 subaru outback solenoid is done for and they want 2k to fix it like bruh
Where is the oil plug applied to a CVT in a 2015 Subaru Wrx?. I need to add oil in the transmission and I don't know where’s the plug.
Any tricks on removing a frozen cover. I can’t get mine to move.
How do I know which transmission I have so that I ordered the correct valve body?
Is the relearn for the cvt necessary or is it good to use without a relearn?
How do I identify which transmission is on my 2019 Outback, as well which CBT fluid to use?
Thanks.
What's the labor time to do it ?? My mechanic said 3 hours but I don't believe hem...
whats the line that connects to the silencer chamber?
Local Subaru dealer here said that replacing valve body could cause negative issues to cvt. They won't replace valve body. Any truth to this?
Hey what's up MrSubaru, would you recommend sourcing the solenoids and replacing them? I got the light display and when I had the codes pulled it was for the valve body. My local dealership quoted me approximately $2800. I was thinking about replacing the valve body but when I started to research the procedure, I came across some forums that led me to this video and also said that the solenoids could also be replaced. what are your thoughts about this? love your videos, looking forward to a response!
Silly question, 2014 outback 2.5. How do I know what trans is in it? It is the cvt. Getting some jolting while accelerating, no sort of codes what so ever. Trans serviced last week, been doing it for the past few months
Very good video. I learn a lot from u mr sub. Because of the ease of repair I just bought my 24 ascent limited. just one observation, forgot to connect inside body connector.
My 2017 Impreza seems to be having systems of a bad valve body no check engine lights, is this common? Car has 180,000 mile ont it.
Thats awesome...i wish i could get these parts donated..ive been trying to save and buy one part at a time..i just cant get the valve body..i bought a 200 dollar one that was no good..changed just the solenoid..sucks..its like a thousand now for the valve body..anyway..thank you for the video. If i had a good oem valve body i would have gotten it done right..anyway..thanks man have a good day
For top end service on a 2011 outback premium 2.5 can I use the plug on the passenger side intake. Thanks
Hey great video..i was able to do the swap myself..1 issue the codes came back after 1 mile..runs great though..reprogram or relearn required to keep codes off??
I have a 2015 Subaru Forester there is a creaking noise when we are turning or driving on the streets I don't know if it's coming from the suspension what do you think needs to be replaced?
is this part compatible with 2016 crosstrek
Does this vid apply to a 2013 Outback 2.5L CVT?
What’s the name of that electric wrench? I needa have one!!!!
I just test drove a 16' legacy and I noticed a hesitation when I initially step on the gas. Like the engine or transmission hesitates for a second as it starts to drive. Is that normal?
How is this do it yourself if you have to have a computer for the relearn procedure?
