Good '22 summer day to replace fuel filter on my WRX. I have been pushing this aside since recommended replacement of 60,000 miles. I finally caved-in since gas prices are much higher, and I want to yield less fuel consumption when driving.
I've also have gotten ODB fuel codes twice and removed it by replaced gas cap or removed battery to reset ECU. Hopefully by replacing fuel filter this goes away till next service or next comes back.
This project is fairly simple. A little preparation and due diligence can make your installation faster. It took me more than an hour since I was documenting and reading notes along the way. With experience, you can tackle this around 30-45 minutes.
Project Scope:
1. Easy

Parts:
1. Fuel Filter: 42072FE020
2. Rubber Seal: 42060AA040
Tools:
1. 12mm socket.
2. 8mm socket.
3. Phillips screw.
4. Plastic fastener remover.
Pre-Installation: Removing Seats
1. Remove caps and unscrew bolt of seats with 12mm socket.
2. Remove seat cushion.
3. Remove back seat bolts.
4. Remove seatbelt buckles out of the way and remove by lifting up the center of the cushion.
5. Remove the rear passenger side bracket that holds the rear top cushion with 12mm socket and plastic fastener remover.
6. Remove metal lid with Phillips screw.
7. Remove fuel filter lid out with bolts 8mm socket.
Fuel Filter Replacement
1. Take out gas pressure out by releasing fuel power plug (white) from the fuel pump.
2. Start power and till it is hard to start.
3. Disconnect battery.
4. Disconnect fuel lines and towel, just in case fuel spills.
5. Wiggle and remove the fuel filter/pump kit out of the tank.
6. Unscrew bracket with two Phillips screw.
7. Replace fuel filter.
8. Replace fuel filter tank seal, with new rubber (optional; but recommended if rubber seal is brittle).
9. Reverse installation: Hose, bolts and tank cover seals.
Post Installation
1. Connect battery and build pressure to the engine to the fuel by ECC the engine, till you hear no more air in the line.
2. Turn on engine and check for "Check Engine Light".
3. While engine is on, check for visible leaks by fuel filter area.
4. Put everything back to its place from seat cushions, bolts - with reverse instructions.

my guy, this is the fuel pump not the filter.

You have to take the pump out to get to the filter, which is what they did. Google the part number if you don't believe me. 😘
