  • I haven't done a van video for a while, so today I decided to take care of some things on my van to-do list. One of the things was to remove the spare tire mount, get rid all the rust on it, then give it a new coat of paint. Not a big time, complicated project, but one that needed to be done. And then there's that dang skylight, leaking again, but from where?

Seems like those sky lights sooner or later leak. I’m sure you will get it fixed one way or another in time. It’s nice you can fix things. I have a husband that can fixed things too which has saved us a lot of money over the years. He just doesn’t have the stamina he use to have. We had our 57th anniversary July 1.

Congrats on your anniversary, Susie! You're right about skylights leaking, especially this type. I thought that I had this one taken care of, but of course I was wrong....

Get you some Dicor RV roof sealant. I've used it several times on my camper roof. High quality stuff and self leveling. Comes in a caulk tube. Amazon has it.

I have Dicor, Greg. If you look at the rooftop shot in the video, there is Dicor around the RV style roof vent. The problem is that the skylight is the old automotive-style, with a rubber gasket. As they get old and the rubber dries up, they leak where the glass meets the rubber. I don't believe that Dicor will work in that application....

Skylight to the dump. Sheet metal patch.

Awww....c'mon, Rene, that would be too easy! Then the metal patch would probably leak. The hole is too big for a 14 X 14 roof vent. I've thought about making the hole larger, and replacing the skylight with a boat hatch, so I could open it if I want to....

Water travels. We think it comes from where we see it, but often, it comes from another area entirely. I know you've taped up the sections that have been leaking, but how about if you remove all the tape from around the entire skylight, clean it off, put Butyl tape around the whole skylight. You could also use Eternabond, which I've had good luck with, but I do not know how well it will work in extreme hot weather. Most of my experience with it was in New England. Let us know what you end up doing and whether it worked.

I have some Eternabond tape, Lisa, and I'm thinking about using that. It's actually an old-style aftermarket automotive skylight that used to open. It has a rubber seal around it that has dried up, which is why it leaked, so I covered the entire rubber seal with waterproof tape....but alas, it still leaks from time to time. Dang thing....

Morning Chuck, Is it possible the water is entering via the mounting bracket? Each one of Those penetrations usually has a small rubber gasket as well.

@@vincemarshall9520 Good morning, Vince.... The skylight doesn't really have a mounting bracket, as such, and everything has been double and triple sealed with allegedly "waterproof" tape. Yet when it rains really hard, a small amount of water continues to find a way through somehow. It's not a big thing, and I'll figure it out eventually. The skylight is just a single pane of glass, and another thing it does, which I haven't talked about, is form droplets of condensation when it's warm inside, but cold and wet outside....much like the moisture that forms on the outside of a drinking glass. While the rear of the van would be pretty dark without it, I would be happy if the skylight wasn't there at all....
