Locked Jaw | |Trismus
There are 4 main ways to help manage trismus:
Massage (gently rub) your jaw muscles.
Exercise your jaw muscles.
Keep good posture.
Keep good oral hygiene.
A) Massage your jaw muscles
Place your index (pointer) and middle finger on your cheekbone. Keeping your lips together, relax your jaw (don’t clench your teeth).
Run your fingers down over your masseter muscle, which ends at your bottom jaw.
As you move your fingers, find areas that feel tender or tight.
*Massage these areas with your fingers in a circular motion for 30 seconds. Do this 2 to 3 times every day.*
B) Exercise your jaw muscles
Follow these tips when doing your exercises.
It may be helpful to use a timer or clock to make sure you hold the stretches long enough.
Breathe normally. Do not hold your breath during the exercises.
Do the exercises slowly and smoothly. Do not make any fast or jerky movements.
Watch your movements in a mirror to make sure you’re doing them correctly.
You can do these exercises while sitting or standing.
✨ Active range of motion and stretching exercises
Do these exercises 3 times every day. Hold your head still while doing them.
Open your mouth as wide as you can, until you feel a gentle stretch but no pain (see in video )
Hold this stretch for 10 seconds, then relax. Take 1 full breath between each repetition. Repeat this 5 times.
Move your lower jaw to the left (see in video ). Hold this stretch for 3 seconds, then relax. Take 1 full breath between each repetition. Repeat this 5 times.
Move your lower jaw to the right (see in video ) Hold this stretch for 3 seconds, then relax. Take 1 full breath between each repetition. Repeat this 5 times.
✨ Passive stretching exercise
Do this exercise 3 times every day.
Place your thumb under your top front teeth.
Place the index (pointer) finger of your other hand on your bottom front teeth.
Open your mouth as wide as you can. Push your fingers gently against your teeth to give extra resistance.
This will help to keep your mouth from closing. You should feel a gentle stretch, but no pain.
*Hold this stretch for 5 to 10 seconds, then relax. Take 1 full breath between each repetition. Repeat this 5 times.*
C) Keep good posture
✨Neck stretches
Do these exercises once a day.
Bend your head forward (see in video ) . Hold this position for 30 seconds, then relax. Take 1 full breath between each repetition. Repeat this 5 times.
Bend your head backward (see video ) . Hold this position for 30 seconds, then relax. Take 1 full breath between each repetition. Repeat this 5 times.
Turn your head to the right (see in video ) Hold this position for 30 seconds, then relax. Take 1 full breath between each repetition. Repeat this 5 times.
Turn your head to the left (see in video ) Hold this position for 30 seconds, then relax. Take 1 full breath between each repetition. Repeat this 5 times.
Bring your left ear to your left shoulder.Hold this position for 30 seconds, then relax. Take 1 full breath between each repetition. Repeat this 5 times.
Bring your right ear to your right shoulder .“Hold this position for 30 seconds, then relax. Take 1 full breath between each repetition. Repeat this 5 times.
✨Chin tuck
Do this exercise 3 times every day.
Sit or stand with your back and head leaning against the wall.
Tuck your chin in and try to flatten the back of your neck against the wall.
Hold this position for 5 seconds, then relax.
Return to the starting position.
Take 1 full breath between each repetition. Repeat this 10 times.
✨Shoulder blade squeeze
Do this exercise 3 times every day.
Tuck your chin in (just as in video )
Push your shoulders down and away from your ears. This stops you from shrugging.
Squeeze your shoulder blades together as tightly as possible.Hold this position for 5 seconds, then relax.
Return to the starting position.
Take 1 full breath between each repetition. Repeat this 10 times.
D) Keep good oral hygiene
Brush your teeth and tongue when you wake up, after each meal, and before you go to bed.
If you have removable dentures or a dental prosthesis, take it out and clean it each time you clean your mouth. Do not sleep with it in your mouth.
Floss your teeth once a day before you go to bed.

My mom undergone tongue and lympnode surgey for her squamous cell carcenoma pT1N2b. gone with radiation+chemo(carboplatin) treatment.
its been 5 months treatment completed, and she is using mouth opener exercise daily, still she is feeling vibrations and tightness at her neck and eating track.
Doctor is also not suggesting anything else apart from mouth opener. what else can we do for the relaxation of that vibrations and discomfort at the neck and jaw area where radiation happened. Please suggest more on this.

Mam mera papa ka buccal mucosa ka operate hua hai 10 month hue hai operate ko unko phirse ho gya hai chemo chal rhi hai but face ke dusri side hard ho gya face turn krne me bhi problem ho rhi hai aur pain b bhut hai.skin hard kyu hui hai aur kya treatment ho skta hai iska pls kuch suggest kijiye.

I had 2 surgery in 7 mnths, first was tongue done in Janand 2nd was buckle done in september and in the second surgery they used free flap to repair my jaw and the tissues were extract from my thigh now the problem is i see some small here growing on those flaps, now do i need to take separate treatment for this problem

hello ma'am mere papa k tongue cancer December last me detect hua..5 saal phle unka heart ka b operation hua tha now heart 35 percent work kr rha h..so Dr operate krne ko b mana kar rhe hai..aise me inke phle 21 days k gap se 3 chemo lagi..then 35 radio therapy b hui...now 7 din k gap se 6 chemo aur di Dr ne...but problem abhi bhi kam nhi hui..aise me aap btaye hum aage kya treatment le jis se Inka cancer pura cure ho jaaye

Hello doctor mera tongue aur jabde ka cancer ka operation 1 jan 2024 ko hua hai uske baad 6 chemo aur 33 radiation ki cycle poori ho gai hai doctor ne 45 din ke baad dobara bulaya hai mein abhi liquid diet hi le paa raha hu bohot bhook lagti hai kya solid mein le sakta hu pls suggest.
