  • Union General Joseph Hooker is best known for being the recipient of Stonewall Jackson's flank attack at the Battle of Chancellorsville. However, outside of that one moment, Joseph Hooker demonstrated great ability as a commander. His ambition, however, may have caused him to overstep his ability. Hooker constantly sought promotion, even rubbing shoulders with President Abraham Lincoln's cabinet members. This biography highlights the life and career of this unique Civil War general. From his early life to the Mexican American War to his attempt at being a rancher in California and his tumultuous Civil War career, Joseph Hooker's life is anything but boring.

General Hooker was a good soldier & general officer. He excelled at being an amazing organizer who could inspire pride & confidence in his troops like an earlier predecessor, Gen. George McClennan👍

I would love to hear the Wilder Historian dig deep into that period of Cherokee removal.

Thank you, Dr Wilder. Hooker was certainly an enigmatic character with plenty of boosters and detractors, and arrogant in the extreme.

When he was in San Diego he shared a house with Captain George Stoneman. Is that the same Stoneman referred to in the Band song "The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down" where the lyric sung is
    "Virgil Caine is the name
And I served on the Danville train
    'Till Stoneman's cavalry came
And tore up the tracks again"
    ???????????????????????????????????????????

@@j.dragon651 Yeah, it was. Danville,VA. is Southside Viginny, down near the Nawth Carolina line!
Jeff Davis stopped in Danville, after Gen.R.E.Lee informed him to evacuate Richmond. I reckon you know the rest of the story, as ol'Paul Harvey would have said.

Hooker was a mixed bag. Certainly better than McClellan, being both aggressive and competent in the field. But his endless self promotion was a personality flaw, and he lacked Grant’s fearlessness. All in all, he was just not up to independent command.

Always liked Hooker. I hate to say "unlucky" at Chancellorsville. He did get the drop on Lee. But his cavalry and communications failed. And at the key moments, he made the wrong choices.

Lack of Respect towards Superheroes early on. He was a Great jr officer if used well & humored. McClellan seemed to have the proper attitude to Hooker.
Hooker also fell onto the wrong side of Post War army Politics. He fell on Taylor’s side vs Scott.
