  • TECHNICALLY SPEAKING, I DIDN'T DO ANY PORTING, I SIMPLY UNSHROUDED THE VALVES. WITH ASSISTANCE FROM MENTOR BRIAN TOOLEY, I TOOK TO THE CHAMBERS ON THE 706 HEADS AND IMPROVED THE FLOW RATE BY 10-15 CFM JUST BY UNSHROUDING THE VALVES ON THE SMALL-VALVE HEADS. WHAT IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS?

    I would blend intakes/heads ports and shine them up all pretty, Thin out pushrod pinch point. Hog the bowl and smooth the guide boss and make it all pretty and people would pay me to do them because they looked pretty. I found David Vizard and learned I had been doing all the wrong things. Thinking I knew where Air wanted to go instead of where it actually go :p I would not pay attention to throat size or bias on the bowl. I didn’t understand how much the valve job had to do with flow all I knew was 3 angle was better than stock. If you confused about where to cut check out how David Vizard shows a way to do a proper geometric approach to “area rule” the combustion chamber.

    I pretty much ruined the first cylinder head that I ported as a teenager. I removed too much metal thinking that maximum flow meant more power.
    What I eventually learned was to closely examined the ports, pockets, & chambers before reaching for tools. The biggest returns seem to come when I remove very little material in just the right places. Don’t try to re-invent the wheel. Just minimize the restrictions. If you think the ports or chambers are significantly too small, then you need to go shopping for a different set of cylinder heads.

    I ported some stock 305 chevy castings, it was one of many mods that took the stock engine from running high 17's at Bandimere to high 15's in it's current state. Well worth the trouble even on a 9 to 1 c.r. engine.

    Thank you Richard for choosing one of the most interesting and valued topics for the home garage guys to discuss about😊! The only thing i'm concerned is make all the 8 cylinders porting identical. Is there ways to keep track on your own porting work, other than cc; ing the chamber in this case?

      Modeling clay. Work a bit and make a shape mold. Keep your pieces. Sharpie marker and then give to kids or grandkids when done😊

      The ports aren’t all the same to begin with so don’t focus too much on that. From what I have seen and watched, it takes a far bit of fuckery to really mess something up. Sometimes in life, less is actually more. Start small and see what other people have done on your particular engine here on TH-cam.
      If you can get a head from the wrecking yard and practice on that, you can’t screw up yours. Good luck if you try it.

    I ported a pair of iron heads with a Dremel, because I'm a masochist. It was a chevy 3.4 V6... took a couple days.
    Side note: I will never do that again.

    I remember the days of normal aspirated engine mods trying to get every last bit of power out of engines.

    Hey Richard! It’s me again lol just finished up my stock rotating assembly lq4 block with 243 heads that I did a very mild port and polish on. I used trick flows sloppy stage 2 cam and I’m planning on using a fitech ultimate ls kit fuel injection to run this combination with full accessory drive. they offer this kit in a 550hp kit and a 750hp kit. I plan to keep it NA for now because its just a street car. I’ve watched most of your videos and seen you run a ly6 with 799 heads and that was above 500hp and also ly6 with tf ss2 cam which was above 500hp (no accessories on). The 550 with 92mm tb or 750hp with 102mm tb kit? I want to maintain drive ability without sacrificing horsepower. Your ly6 ss2 cam combo made 514hp @ 5700-5800rpm and a min hp of 240 ish at 3000rpm they rate the kit at max/min hp the 750 kit is min 250 and max 750 and 550 is 200 min. What do you think is better for my application? Sorry for the lengthy comment and thanks for any insight you can provide. I based my whole build on info gathered here. I heard using a throttle body that’s too large could make throttle sensitivity down low tuff to drive. Is the 92 enough? I’ve also heard 6.0 can take as much air as you can give it. Thanks! Oh and just because I’ve seen your 92 Vs 102 video the intake supports the 102mm tb

    • @hondatech5000
      @hondatech5000 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomcelica if Eric is doing the head then he probably doesn’t do a port match alone do you know if he sells that? The reason he does match is there’s a large intake or some reason it benefits. Port matching just because you have the heads off I don’t think does much. If your not improving flow and you make the port bigger at all you will be losing cd and ram effect… if all you do is port match have you found the area of greatest restriction and addresses that first?

      @@hondatech5000 racing friends in pure stock dirt track weren't allowed to port heads or intake, but they could gasket match both only 1/2" into the port. I wondered if that was a waste of time with the irregular shape of factory head and intake ports?

    • @hondatech5000
      @hondatech5000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kevinshiley9061 well if your racing you do everything. But you also do a lot of trial and error. I don’t know if it’s worth anything but it’s not much. Restriction from most to least typically: intake valve, chamber/top cut and sealing seat angle(I consider one move) bottom cut blend/the throat, the bowl on both sides of guide boss, the pinch point(pushrod), then the port opening. So consider that. What can you do to the seat?? And can you blend you cuts on the seat 🤔 or does it have to be raw untouched. Also technically is unshrouding considered porting? I mean it’s more a combustion chamber mod 😜 I dunno what’s accepted in those classes. How do they contest it pull the intake? 😎

Optimize NA Flow. & Double the atmosphere. Now we're Going to spin Tires? At Will. A little more Traction. We'll Haul Ass. If we step on the throttle. NICE.
