How Azure File Sync Works

  • How do you share files between multiple locations for collaboration? The easy answer might be OneDrive, but that's not always the best answer. Services like OneDrive are designed to provide services to a single user. But when entire departments or organizations need to access files from a central location, Azure File Sync is a relatively easy-to-deploy cloud solution that allows larger organizations to safely and securely store and share files across multiple locations.
Imagine if your headquarters needed to share financial data with various branch offices. There are multiple ways to accomplish this task - but most of them require a lot of upkeep and maintenance. Likewise, data syncing operations can be much more complicated than you might think. Using a hybrid solution like Azure File Sync takes the guesswork out of those operations.
Knox Hutchinson lays out a few steps that show how to deploy Azure File Sync:
✔ Step 1a: You will need Azure storage - specifically, Azure file storage. You’ll want to deploy Azure file storage with Azure storage account with file storing.
✔ Step 1b: You’ve got to tell it to sync a file share - so you’ll configure an Azure file sync resource that’ll tell everything where to land.
✔ Step 2a: Make sure your environment is ready for the installer! Do a basic assessment to ensure that you have the correct .NET framework already installed - usually a version that’s greater than 4.7 (or the latest version required for file sync).
✔ Step 2b: Have the correct Powershell module installed so you can run the commands needed.
✔ Step 3: Install the agent! Download, run the installer, make sure it works … you know the drill.
✔ Step 4: Jump back to Azure and configure Azure File Sync.
Ta-daa! That’s how you get started with Azure File Sync.

What is better for collaborating on the same spreadsheet? Azure File Sync via a cloud hard drive or OneDrive or DropBox? Please give two answers: business with no IT staff, business with IT staff.

Does this file sync and cloud tiering solution also manage file locking to prevent 2 Users opening the same file to edit and ending up with file conflict like what happens with Dropbox and locally cached files?

How do you make this a two way sync? I have it configured and it's only going in one direction.

Thank you for this video. I'm looking for a similar solution. In my case we have 1000+ servers, that need to push files. I wonder if Azure File Sync is the right solution for my use case.
My concern is about configuring/monitoring 1000+ servers. Do you think Azure File Sync scales for such a large number?
