  • For decades now, Iran has been clear on its intent to harm Israel. Tehran even unveiled a doomsday clock in 2017, slowly counting down to the destruction of the Jewish state in 2040. But the shadow war between the two countries is now in broad day light, following the October 7th attack on southern Israel by Hamas. Iranian leaders have framed the attack as a historic moment in the destruction of both Israeli and American powers, using the massacre as a rallying point to unite regional forces and proxies against Israel. While Iran uses its proxies such as Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis in Yemen, and Hezbollah in Lebanon to fight the country's war, it's all part of Tehran's larger regional strategy against Western powers. So what can be done to combat the growing Iranian threat? Research fellow at the Iranian program for the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) and former head of the Iranian strategic branch for the Israeli Defense Intelligence (IDI), Danny Citrinowicz, takes an in depth look at Iran's regional strategy amidst the war against Israel, in this week's episode of the National Security Podcast.

Influencing an enemy's population and culture by cyberwarfare is a full court press affair. When one is being attacked in this way, the mental state of the targeted population must be analyzed and probed for weaknesses, some of which are obvious, and some of which can show up during the process of manipulation. When confronting such an offensive, one must be careful to not get into the same type of warfare against one's own population so that the cyberwarfare becomes a competition between governments. This is an area that requires honesty and sophistication. People everywhere are subject to many of the same human weaknesses. Israel has one of the currently most enviable fairly open political landscapes in the World. People are not afraid to express their opinions, founded or unfounded. The sophistication of the average social media user is not up to the challenges of what is being thrown at them. This is a weakness in the West where social media is widespread. For those responsible for protecting a democracy from the inside, a healthy dose of metacognition is indicated. The narrative that currently plagues Israel goes beyond traditional anti-semitism. It comes in at a low level around the World wherever a weakness can be scaled up and adapted to cultures everywhere. The tactics are not sophisticated; but the strategy definitely is. The goal should be to analyze the game from a broad perspective and determine the actual playing field. I think that there is some catchup work to be done here.

I can see good reasons why taking the dead bodies down that way makes sense in that situation. Can you also see any good reasons why Hamas tortured and threw live bodies off of the roofs of Gaza right after they were elected? But you did not report that, did you. So I guess that you can justify your efforts to depart the road of objective journalism to the sleazy side of reporting.
