awww grandpa is so cute ;-)) I married a Goan ( Indian ) and your Grandpa not only looks Indian but also has the slight Indian accent ... adorable ;-)) He should be proud to have Indian Heritage , it is an ancient grand Civilization and was a civilization WAY before The United Kingdom ...
Hajar Renate Midbrød do you suppose he's ancestry is not from Goa, because of the Gujarati confusion they were having... You should ask your husband about it.
bless his heart. He seems to be struggling - that generation that was taught to be ashamed of anything other than Anglo-Saxon. Indians are a beautiful people with a proud heritage/history. I hope it inspires him to look more into it and maybe to visit 😊
Very interesting results. As an American, if you did not tell me where your grandfather was from, I would have assumed that he was from India after he spoke for a few minutes. His accent to me seems so much like an English speaker from India.
It was common for British soldiers to marry/ have relations with Indian women during the Raj. It created a mixed class called Anglo-Indians. Alot of Goans try to pass themselves off as Anglo-Indians.
You are 100% correct, they did thsis so it secured them a passage to England back then, bet they didn't write that in the history books, some of these comments on here are ridiculous and also verging on racism against whites! , where have they learned their history from, ist NOTHINg to do with being forced to be "ashamed" of their heritage and change to to more saxon sounding names etc, it purley more because of what you said and also some " faked" anglo indian to gain an entry into europe back then, I know because my grandmother who was of mixed race and (Anglo Indian) was from Raj days and was born and lived in india and told me many a true story from life there.
Fabulous I think what Jan was saying is that there are many Indian Christians who passed themselves off as Anglo Indians. And many of their names were taken from old Raj era grave yards.
I thought Goa was a Portuguese colony? There are over 25,000 Goans on my doorstep (I can't get out of the house!!) and they have Portuguese names. They are living in Britain on Portuguese passports. They are a lot darker than Grandpa here.
Yes Goa was a Portuguese colony and Goans are Indian people, some might be mixed with Portuguese, but the Indian side is always more evident, stronger gene.
i thought the same. i paused the video on her face and she has the facial structure and features of indians. then i saw her grandfather, its amazing what dna uncovers!
Blimey, that's one hell of a compliment, lol. I kinda see the resemblance in her bone structure but my lips let me down big time hahaha. It is really crazy to think how phenotypically strong my Asian genes must be despite being such a small portion of me, but I guess they may be amplified by my Italian genes too. Genetics are fascinating!
Not from Asia though, but I think your Indian genes have crossed really well and gave you such a distinct facial structure. At a first glace, it felt like you've good genes makeup at least by the facial structure. I don't know about the other stuffs and not so preeminent Indian records...Lol
your grandfather is a fine looking man, and I'd have guessed to look at him that he'd Indian in him. he appears to be mixed European and indian, which is exactly what he is
Actually his Mom might have told the truth. She could be Goan (so she gets Dravidian and Gujrati) and be catholic or native Christian (Christianity arrived in India ~100 AD). A lot of conversion happened in Goa. The fucked up part is: Portuguese targeted these Christians a lot (as that Church wasn't Catholic or Orthodox).
I absolutely see Indian in you. Since I have relatives by marriage who are Pakistani, I recognize a lot of the same features in your face. Fun to see. Too bad that your great-grandmother was in a world/time where she had to life about who she was ethnically. Thanks for sharing it. Wendy
You did a really great job. Racism has affected us all in immeasurable ways. It broke my heart to hear your grandpa say that his family was "pure anglo saxon".
Ahh, you and me both. I feel like he was kind of robbed of his rich culture. Still, by pretending to be Portuguese (whether for her own gain or not) I think his mother probably saved him from a lot of the social injustices of the time. He had a pretty charmed upbringing. Thank you for watching :)
I agree that there was a trade off. But I have family members who 'passed' and they said they always felt like they weren't being themselves. They couldn't go to the communities their families lived in or be around their families or risk being exposed. My dad was telling me about their aunt who was a bit of a rebel. She looked white but would come and get him and his sister and take them to the zoo on days when blacks were not allowed and was the first black woman to work as a typist/secretary for the city (though they didn't know she was black). I wish you all the best.
Can you blame anyone though, it's the same reason people immigrate, people blame them and say stay and make the country you live in better, sure it'seasy to say that from the outside, living it is a different matter, given the choice he'll yea I would lie, who the hell wants to live being treated like a second class citizen, going to terrible schools, having terrible hospitals etc. Its easy to say that now I'm 2017 when the situation is much different.
who cares what part of india. my thread is that they look indian. she should have stopped living in a dream that she thinks she's closer to whatever cos the indian is strong with this family
as for ignorant people like you must know that in Hinduism we have four color races of humans WHITE, BLACK, RED AND YELLOW there are many other species look like human and have diffrent color but are not of the human race, people have a brain and can see the diversity in animals and you can see that every animal lives in their own pack or tribes, KNOW LEARN TO RESPECT OTHERS BECAUSE WE BELIEVE THE WHOLE UNIVERS IS ONE BIG FAMILY AND FOR THE IGNORANT PEOPLE THAT DONT KNOW THAT THE WHOLE WORLD USE TO CONNECT TO INDIA IT WAS CALLED BHARAT VARSHA AND FOR MORE INFO YOU CAN CHECK MAHABHARATA WHERE EIGHTY KINGDOMS FROM EVERY CORNER FROM EARTH CAME TO FIGHT THE BIG HOLY WAR THAT IS CALLED MAHABHARAT, ALSO HINDU GOD SHREE RAM SONS LAV AND KUSH RULED THE BIG ISLE LAND THAT IS CALLED AFRICA AND MANY AFRICAN CALL THEMSELF THE PEOPLE OF KUSH BUT THEY FORGOTTEN THAT THE KING WAS A INDIAN, SO MANY MORE STORY ONE OF THE SAD STORY IS OF INDIA WHEN THE MUSLIMS RULED THEY KILLED AND ENSLAVED MILLIONS OF WOMAN WICH THEY SELLED WORLD WIDE SO THIS IS ALSO ONE OF THE REASON WE GET SO MANY MIXED UP PEOPLE, THE BOTTOMLINE OF MY MESSAGE IS WE ALL ARE BROTHER AND SISTERS WE HAVE THE SAME SOUL ONLY THING IS WE ARE MADE IN DIFFRENT WAYS AND NOT ALL WILL FOLLOW THE SAME PATH BUT WHEN WATCHING ON A SPIRITUAL ANGLE WE ARE ALL THE SAME HUMANS, ANIMAL ETC WETHER YOU AGREE OR NOT, OHM SHAANTI OHM
so uncomfortable to watch, but kudos to you for bringing the truth to light to this old man, he obviously lived in a time when indians were indentured servants and one can understand why he isn't too pleased to have his self image shattered like this.
Godfrey Winston I love that look also. I know it's the glasses but it's that look and the fact that he probably smells like grandpa's favorite aftershave.
My ex girlfriend was from Goa and would constantly refer to herself as portugese despite looking absolutely nothing like a Portugese woman. To me, it seemed that because of colonialisation a lot of people from that region were keen to have European ancestry despite not having any.
Actually she may right. Of course, she may not look Portuguese from her outside. There is a group called Burgers in Sri Lanka. I think in Dutch language it means citizen, but in Sri Lanka the descendents of europeans are called like that. Its a very small percentage, but they do have distinct cultures in terms of food and names. I understand they are all mixed up by now, but they have the legacy of their European ancestors. Is it something bad for them to say?
Goan Christians. Goan Hindus don't usually have this problem. Amazing how religion divides the same people doesn't it? Creating a different identity altogether. India has plenty of Muslims who claim they were Arab, Persian, Turk. Vast majority of them were converted.
This video really makes me want to do the DNA test!! My mom was Goan and my dad's Indian but his family is very light skinned with light curly hair, in fact my grandpa looked a lot like yours!! and my dad says they have some British in them, but I'm not really sure so the DNA test would be super helpful!! People are always confused where me and my bro are from because of the whole mix so now I really want to know our ancestry!!
You and grandma seemed more excited that he is Indian. He didn't seem very pumped to be Indian. He kept deflecting the fact with remarks like "I'm % scandinavian" " but my father's side is full Anglo-Saxon, no drop of Indian blood". At the end he about had it when the 40%Dravidian was explained lol
His father was British. You can be 50% Indian and 40% Dravidian. Of course, just because his father had British citizenship and was born in Britain doesn't mean his father was 100% British. I'm British, but my DNA is mixed up. It's pretty rare to find a Brit that is more than 50% genetically British. We're all British, Irish, German, French, Scandinavian etc... My family tree places nearly all of my ancestors born in England for the last 20+ generation, except for one Great-Grandmother from Syria. But even accounting for her, my genetics aren't very English. British, Irish, Western European, Scandinavian etc... I'm expect most nationalities populations are regionally mixed as well. The point being that even with a British father, it would make sense that he didn't have much British genetics. Western European aka Anglo-Saxon tribes and Scandinavian and Danes and the such are all mixed into British genetics. Welsh, Irish and Scottish often like to think they're "pure" but labs show they're not "pure" either. Genetics overlap regionally and that's how you have things like Indian and Dravidian at the same time.
Nikhil Sukumar These aren't races. These are just ethnic groups and because no society is static, no one is going to get these DNA tests and find they are 100% something. To be 100% one ethnicity is to be inbred. It's not destructive because not one person can take this test and be 100% anything. These tests are living proof that we are all part of one race.
I have to tell you, I live right by a very Indian neighborhood in Chicago. When the video popped up with your Grandfather-what a shock! He could walk through the Indian neighborhood and every single person there would think he is Indian! He looks profoundly Indian-just like the average, middle class Indian American men I see on almost a daily basis. Amazing how strong it comes out in him. Your poor great-grandmother-how awful she had to tell a "little white lie" just to be accepted in society. But the mix has come through the generations in a beautiful way-you are a beautiful young woman.
+Alejandra Soprano he knew he was part Indian already from my DNA test a few months before. What he didn't know was the extent to which his mum had lied to him about who she was :(
+Alejandra Soprano it was during the British Raj when the Brits ruled India and had formed a society where natives were looked down upon and mixed race people were at risk of being rejected by both the Brits and the Indians, especially because they didn't fit into the structured caste system. Of course there would have been exceptions but it wasn't an ideal situation to be in. We'll never know the full story, but she maybe did it to be able to marry my British great grandfather for love, or to better her own standing in society as well as her future children's. Still, probably tough to hear when you're in your 70s!
Having a sun tan, doesn't make anyone Indian. Double blind dna tests are far better The Cultural Marxists are crowbarring this into everyone's "results"
This was lovely to watch, I'm Indian (Anglo-Indian + Goan), with British-Somali great grandparents. Just doing some research before I get a DNA test done. Your grandpa is adorable, and grandmum too, he definitely looks Goan, my dad is Goan has similar colour and features.
+toofastforyall 85 thanks, I've spent a long time trying the different gedmatch tests in the past, but it seemed as though the proxies were more geared towards African or WHG populations rather than Asian so I don't quite trust the results, unless I'm looking at the wrong tests?? Any help appreciated! :)
lozzythesquirrel First of all sign in with your account and password, second when you're on the main page scroll down to a section that says ''Analyze Your Data'' then click on Admixture ( heritage ) then it should link you to a page that says ''Admixture Utilities'' then there should be a little box saying ''Select the project'' then select the one that says ''Eurogenes'' you have to select that even if you're not fully European to get the end result of your autosomal test then after that where it says ''Select how you want to process it'' click the first circle at the side to select the ''Admixture Proportions (With link to Oracle)'' then click on the ''Click here to continue:'' button then afterwards select your kit number ( I assume you already have that ) then obviously wait a second to let it run The end result should look like that as you can see South Indian should show up even if you have it in small or high proportions scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/14448868_770398986432462_4842772380880648011_n.jpg?oh=161822db0ecf17972816a9c58b3c1f03&oe=5896097E
Thanks for the detail! Within the Eurogenes option though there is another dropdown with different models (K12, K13, ANE, etc.). Do you happen to know the difference between those? I have no idea if you're actually interested in the results or not, but on the off-chance here's what my grandpa gets in the K13 model: North_Atlantic 24.50 Baltic 15.63 West_Med 4.20 West_Asian 9.94 East_Med 3.18 Red_Sea - South_Asian 35.59 East_Asian 3.73 Siberian 2.15 Amerindian 0.79 Oceanian - Northeast_African 0.26 Sub-Saharan -
Truthfully, when I first saw your grandfather I thought to myself of course he's Indian. Reminds me of my friend's grandad and he's full Indian, or so we think. Actually they could pass as twins only the skin tone is different. I feel sad that he didn't know his true heritage until now, like he has missed out on it.
The most logical explanation is that her grandfather's mother belonged to a family of local Christians in Goa. The Portuguese mixed with the locals and brought them Christianity and their language. So she might well have felt Portuguese and spoken Portuguese, but have still carried these Dravidian genes. She could also have had some small percentage of Portuguese ancestry herself.
You got to keep in mind that your DNA could pass down anything, that's why even siblings will have things that are like 50% Irish but the other could be only 10% .
I dunno if you've ever looked into Anglo-Indian history from the British Raj but it is so fascinating, I'd definitely recommend you reading up on it if you haven't already. My dad's side is Anglo (mum as Catholic Indian as they come lol) and your grandad looks a lot like them haha. But I think it's so interesting that you did these videos. The British Raj (because of my own background) is such a special topic for me! Thanks for uploading them!
You grandad is definitely more indian ..... his genetic makeup even if fifty fifty ... very clearly an indian man in appearance ... goan catholic people do look suave and well groomed like your grandad they take a lot of pride in grooming themselves well I can guarantee he knows KONKANI ... but will pretend he doesnt to prove he is caucasian and not indian He is very SUSEKAAAT and fun though ... lovely to have a granddad like that ! But like most goan catholics who are converts in history , he seems to be upset and struggling with the fact that he has to accept he is indian genetically And you dont need to be sorry for my cousin .... like your grandparents... she has successfully managed to surpass the indian origin because superficially being a very light skinned caucasian looking girl, and has the same identity crisis your grandparents had, for which they hid their indian origins from you .. she is just another goan catholic girl doing exactly the same thing what most goans do when they live abroad like your grandad for the fear of discrimination by having the term indian attached to them your grandmother who is european ... watch HOW SHE LAID IMPETUS ON THE SOUTH ASIAN percentage ! She knows he is indian but is being mild and doesnt want to hurt the husband she loves and bare open his identity crisis
I've noticed that Indians are really diverse concerning their looks. I've seen very pale Indians and really dark ones. Is the "Indian DNA" common for all of them, or are there various ethnic groups within India?
joanna_k I'm trying to research it, but apparently Brahmins (priest class) and 70% of Saurashtrians have the allele A (SLC24A5) which is the gene causing paler skin. It seems to have come from the Gujurat region.
Since DNA, is relatively new, I can understand why grandpa; did not know he was part Indian! He only went by the information, that was given to him! I would be shocked too! Actually most people don't really know their heritage! You do look Indian and Greece! Thanks for sharing your heritage with us!
I have watched so many videos where people find out about their ancestry. It's always fascinating to see how they react! I would love to do the test myself but unfortunately it is not offered in Germany -.-
Maigodseki there are websites that send you a kit to give them your DNA with, and you send it back to them and they give your results. Cost about 100USD
yes, I know but Germany has very strict laws concerning DNA tests. The only test available costs around 600 Euro, I guess these are 500$... That's a little bit to much for me.
Natanya T you think thats possible? but the would send it back to the same address... I dont have the money to stay at a hotel in France for 8 weeks...
I was told my whole life that on my mum's side, my great-grandfather was British and there was some Portuguese in there somewhere. My family was in India at the time of the British Raj. Looking at photos of my relatives and even looking at my grandmother and my mum and her sisters, something is just way off. My great-grandfather was so dark, my grandmother is dark and my mum and aunts look definitely mixed (dark hair, dark eyes, olive skin). One of my cousins has had health issues and the doctor who was taking care of him was talking about how his blood type originates from India/Pakistan regions. I reaaaaaally want to buy my mum a DNA kit now because I suspect the lie is HUGE! Lots has been hidden!!!
Sounds like my family! I didn't see a single photo of my gg until my grandparents moved house a few years ago and we found an old box of photos. That's when I realised Portuguese probably wasn't the whole story... Definitely get the test, it's honestly so great knowing where my family is really from, especially if you're like me and get constantly asked. Keep me updated if you do! :)
What you say at 1:30 does not make sense. Posing as a Portuguese-Goan in a British Raj society would not give any benefits, it would position you as belonging to and representing a rival colonial power. Not only that, but also a Catholic!
Mostly European mix of eastern and western mainly I think, bit of Irish. Possibly a very small amount of African or Native American as my Great Great Gran moved over from the US to the UK in the 1890's and was mixed race from South America. Who knows though lol. :D Very exciting to have the technology to do this. :)
This is really cool. My family is also Anglo Indian (we always knew it) and my test also came up with 19% Native American. I believe this came from a separate source as there was talk of a Native American ancestor in the family. You can definitely see from looking at you and your Grandad that there is a strong Indian heritage. I had my test done almost 10 years ago now, so the groups were more limited and India was grouped in with both Western and Eastern Europe. I am really looking forward to getting a new test done to define the results a bit.
+Rachel Rachel wow, 19% would suggest a very recent ancestor (grandparent being almost full NA). I wonder if it's actually linked to East Asian as the genes are apparently similar. Would love to know your results if you got a new test done!
This was the best DNA result I've seen. Our families have so many stories but it's great that your grandparents got a chance to look into their background.
Similar story here, my mum was born in India and told she was British with some Portuguese. I recently did my dna and what do you know 20% Indian, my mum has also struggled to get her head around this. From my research it seems my grandfather (her dad) was around 80% Indian but was either told (or lied) that he was English/Portuguese. Since researching this myself it appears to have been a common story for Anglo Indians to say this, it’s terribly sad but a result of colonialism. I’m now trying to learn more about this part of me 😊
being only 2% great Britain doesn't mean he wasn't anglo saxon. anglo saxon were a Germanic people all germanic people came originally from Scandinavia so it's normal for all to have percents from there also English people mixed heavily with the Celtic bretons his dad was most certainly English
Isacc Alves Alves where on earth did you get that. the Indo europeans have an origin between ukraine and Siberia but the Germanic language and people's developed in Scandinavia and northern Germany and spread south from there
@Andrew Fishburn English people (aka Anglo-Saxons) and Celtic Britons are not the same, why do you think the Irish and Scottish were fighting for independence throughout their history?
Me too, it's cool to finally have it confirmed though! DNALand.com is a separate website, so you download your raw dna data from ancestry, then upload it to dna land. Scientists get to study your (anonymous) genes and you get to find out more about your ancestry :) there's another one called Gedmatch which has a lot more info but is a lot more difficult to interpret.
Thats interesting.my parents are from belize in the caribbean and my dad is latino and british since british ruled belize for the past several hundred years.my moms great grandparents came from india about 100years ago and they were mixed with British since my moms mother had the name sewell and they are lighter skinned.then i have two cousins that marrried british soldiers and left for britain over 25years ago.intermarrriage with the british and locals happens much more than we know.i looked latino with redish hair as a kid but i look more indian now but my sisters look latino with light skin or they are hard to identify.we are more mixed than we know.but i am proud of my english, indian and latino heritage because each has made me what i am to an extent because those genes have influenced me mentally, physically ,emotionally and intellectually and i have things to be proud of from each.
This is so awesome! I think that you look a bit Indian! If you come here, people would just assume so. I am an American living in India, & my husband is south indian. our son is basically eurasian... our surname is from Cambodia (which explains your grandpa's polynesia result.... lots of migration has happened here!). South indians speak Dravidian languages... my husband knows telugu, tamil & kannada. I also have a "Portugese" grandmother (the rumor is that she is Lanape... but on paper she's German and Irish!! & Ukrainian grandma called her Portugese bc of her black thick hair lol) I can't wait to return to the US so i can order this test.
+Nicole that's so interesting, thanks for sharing. Generally speaking, from those I've spoken to in the UK (and I get the "but what are you?!" question at least twice a week), whites think I'm Asian and Asians think I'm Arabic or white (perhaps harder to believe, but I've been accused of wearing too much fake tan when in reality I don't wear any... 😂). The only place I feel like I really fit in is with Italians as I think I share their features and colour more, but then I'm still an outsider culturally 😔 You'll have to do a video when you manage to do a test! I think some companies like ftdna might offer them in India already?
+lozzythesquirrel you are the reason why men build huge monolithic structures. because once the see your beauty there yours. your such a perfect combination girl .
When I saw your Grand pa I didn't even need to see the results, he looks so Indian! hahah This is very cool though, so much things had to be hidden back in those days. Thanks and take care xxx
if I saw you're grandad on the street I would think he's indian!! he looks like my grandad who's fully indian. I've heard that lots of Indians have some pacific islander due to the "ancient indians'
the 11th century Denmark king makes sense with the Scandinavian. The Gujarati makes sense too. You might find this paper which touches upon Gujarati immigration history to Portugal interesting. In the olden days people covered it up if they married an Indian and called that person "Portuguese" and this is how it was convenient. gcids2017.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Rita-Cachado-and-In%C3%AAs-Louren%C3%A7o-Full-Paper.pdf
This reminds me of the saga of Merle Oberon. She hid her Indian roots and passed her mother off as her maid to pursue a career in Hollywood. Perhaps it was the mother's idea. It turns out that there was another layer to the lie and the mother was actually her grandmother; and she grew up thinking that her mother was her sister.
It must be super cool to do this with your grandparents! I would of loved to do this with mine were they still around. It’s lovely that you shared this together 👌🏽
There may have been a lot of secrets like that during the Raj. I think your grandpa might have been more than a little bit shocked to learn he is nearly half Indian. His mother may have been adopted by a British family in order to blend in so well, or your grandpa might have been exposed to the very close family ties that his mother would have otherwise have had.
Having been born in the Indian Raj myself of an Irish Mother and English Father and done a lot of research it was quite common at the time of the East India Company for there to be mixed marriages between employees of the company and high cast Indian women. In fact it was encouraged to stop the single young single men from feeling homesick and wanting to return home1
I guess people don't know Portuguese people very well because you both could pass for Portuguese plus your grandfather sounds Portuguese. I very happy that you were able to find out about your Indian heritage.
@@michelealbanese3261 majority of population of India lives in northern regions , and population of northern region can easily cover almost Europe so your point is irrelevant.
What is this dna land result? I dont have that and i have ancestry. Also, since he is over 50% Indian, I am going to assume his father was mixed race. My Father and I ended up with Indian DNA as well.
+Stephanie Seefeldt DNALand is a separate website, you have to download your raw dna file from Ancestry and upload it there. Since Ancestry doesn't test every single SNP in your dna, just a sample, it is possible that it could be skewed to make one ethnicity appear larger, which is what we originally assumed. However, you are right; I found a descendant of my grandpa's aunt who has been researching the family for some years now. She has a small amount of Indian blood, and through her research found that my grandfather's great-grandmother was also an Indian lady, her ethnicity either hidden or forgotten down the line. That means my great-grandfather had near to the same amount of Indian blood as me. You'd never think he was mixed from looking at photos though!
lozzythesquirrel oh okay, I uploaded my raw data to gedmatch. It seems like familytree dna tests differently - I am a significant amount more Middle Eastern on there vs ancestry and 23andme. Isn't it interesting the information that is discovered from ancestry research? I would love to be able to trace my Dad's Indian roots, but I think where his family is from, (Sciacca, Sicily) they are just all mixed with many ethnicites. (I have most of that line traced there to the 1700s.) You got very lucky that you were able to figure it out!
Could have been on both sides, but probably more rare. Have you seen "Indian Summers" on PBS? Anyway, my Dads family is from Sicily, no British there. Mine seem to have migrated from Asia and moved West.
I mean I find it hard to believe he didn't know he was half Indian, literally look at him. his mother was full Indian and it's hard to believe he wouldn't have realized loll
When the British East India Company first became established it was not unusual for British men to marry Indian women .Later when the British took over Indian and established the Raj the dominance of the British was established and racism enforced as part of the power dynamic.
Jesus, his mother must have been 80% Dravidian in order for him to be 40%, the average north Indian is only like 25% Dravidian, his mother must have been extremely dark skinned, aint no foundation covering up that blackness, you can tell from his reaction the way he's sticking his tongue out, he knew his mother was Indian - just didnt want to tell anyone
awww grandpa is so cute ;-)) I married a Goan ( Indian ) and your Grandpa not only looks Indian but also has the slight Indian accent ... adorable ;-)) He should be proud to have Indian Heritage , it is an ancient grand Civilization and was a civilization WAY before The United Kingdom ...
Hajar Renate Midbrød do you suppose he's ancestry is not from Goa, because of the Gujarati confusion they were having... You should ask your husband about it.
I heard the accent as well. Plus he looks Indian to me. It’s funny what people don’t see in themselves.

Fabulous
I think what Jan was saying is that there are many Indian Christians who passed themselves off as Anglo Indians.
It so obvious dear, you even look very Indian. You look very Northern Indian, you could pass for Punjabi or Pakistani or even Afghani.
charlene hughes-peseta I absolutely agree
i thought the same. i paused the video on her face and she has the facial structure and features of indians. then i saw her grandfather, its amazing what dna uncovers!
Vir They are very beautiful. I agree
I don't know about the other stuffs and not so preeminent Indian records...Lol
your grandfather is a fine looking man, and I'd have guessed to look at him that he'd Indian in him. he appears to be mixed European and indian, which is exactly what he is
Yes, he is a handsome man. I do see the Indian features, too.
What a magnificent Irish name you have Roisin.
Exactly, I've seen so many good-looking wise older indian men who look just like him!
I agree they are a beautiful couple . The granddaughter looks Indian but they don't .I have trouble understanding them.
I absolutely see Indian in you. Since I have relatives by marriage who are Pakistani, I recognize a lot of the same features in your face. Fun to see. Too bad that your great-grandmother was in a world/time where she had to life about who she was ethnically. Thanks for sharing it. Wendy
SC IDEAS j full
SC IDEAS I totally see it too, her eyes man,so Punjabi
SC IDEAS she looks like a Arab.
Like many generations of Mexican and Mexican-Americans claiming to be "pure Castillian" when there is no such thing.
Jason Bush
Arabian. Pakistani. Same thing.
+Christian “MediaMaven” K oh wow, fascinating! Thank you, you too :)
CuppatoCopa It was upsetting...he looked like a lost child. You are very brave. I wouldn't have had the courage.
wow that's so interesting I can't believe he has lived his whole not knowing he is half Indian. DNA test are revealing the truth.
Not half 10%
Wow, this was so interesting. It is great you all uncovered your roots.
Thank you :) cheers for watching!
You don't want to uncover your roots.....you might fall over.
elozabeth he is an Indian he is part Dravidian from South India
OMG
his face lookalike Indian old man
ur dad looks indian.. whats the surprise?
she is 12% indian
who cares what part of india. my thread is that they look indian. she should have stopped living in a dream that she thinks she's closer to whatever cos the indian is strong with this family
there is no Dravidian or Aryan... It has been proven scientifically they are all the same. It was easy for Britishers to divide India on that basis
as for ignorant people like you must know that in Hinduism we have four color races of humans WHITE, BLACK, RED AND YELLOW there are many other species look like human and have diffrent color but are not of the human race, people have a brain and can see the diversity in animals and you can see that every animal lives in their own pack or tribes, KNOW LEARN TO RESPECT OTHERS BECAUSE WE BELIEVE THE WHOLE UNIVERS IS ONE BIG FAMILY AND FOR THE IGNORANT PEOPLE THAT DONT KNOW THAT THE WHOLE WORLD USE TO CONNECT TO INDIA IT WAS CALLED BHARAT VARSHA AND FOR MORE INFO YOU CAN CHECK MAHABHARATA WHERE EIGHTY KINGDOMS FROM EVERY CORNER FROM EARTH CAME TO FIGHT THE BIG HOLY WAR THAT IS CALLED MAHABHARAT, ALSO HINDU GOD SHREE RAM SONS LAV AND KUSH RULED THE BIG ISLE LAND THAT IS CALLED AFRICA AND MANY AFRICAN CALL THEMSELF THE PEOPLE OF KUSH BUT THEY FORGOTTEN THAT THE KING WAS A INDIAN, SO MANY MORE STORY ONE OF THE SAD STORY IS OF INDIA WHEN THE MUSLIMS RULED THEY KILLED AND ENSLAVED MILLIONS OF WOMAN WICH THEY SELLED WORLD WIDE SO THIS IS ALSO ONE OF THE REASON WE GET SO MANY MIXED UP PEOPLE, THE BOTTOMLINE OF MY MESSAGE IS WE ALL ARE BROTHER AND SISTERS WE HAVE THE SAME SOUL ONLY THING IS WE ARE MADE IN DIFFRENT WAYS AND NOT ALL WILL FOLLOW THE SAME PATH BUT WHEN WATCHING ON A SPIRITUAL ANGLE WE ARE ALL THE SAME HUMANS, ANIMAL ETC WETHER YOU AGREE OR NOT, OHM SHAANTI OHM
Bullshit, backwards and retarded racism ...
He looks and sounds India. How can you not see and hear that?
The minute I saw him I thought Indian and when he spoke, it confirmed that he was Indian.
so uncomfortable to watch, but kudos to you for bringing the truth to light to this old man, he obviously lived in a time when indians were indentured servants and one can understand why he isn't too pleased to have his self image shattered like this.
Yup, Indian women are very beautiful and have gorgeous eyes. You have the same eyes. And, your grandpa looks Indian.
@Broly lol
@Broly i know being an Indian man 😂😜
I love how older people almost always tilt their head upwards when they are looking at a computers lol!
Godfrey Winston it's line less bifocals. it's how they work.
te'Shara Nono ahhh. Probably will be using the samething in a few decades
Godfrey Winston I love that look also. I know it's the glasses but it's that look and the fact that he probably smells like grandpa's favorite aftershave.
It's called bifocals. You look through the bottom part of the lense for near vision.
vlthompson3 Did you not read the first reply to the post in this thread or am I missing something that I didn't see through my bifocals? Lol
My ex girlfriend was from Goa and would constantly refer to herself as portugese despite looking absolutely nothing like a Portugese woman. To me, it seemed that because of colonialisation a lot of people from that region were keen to have European ancestry despite not having any.
Devon Austin Obviously the woman suffers from low self esteem, hump and dump kinda gal if you ask me.
She might have been referring to her nationality. In some regions of India, people can choose to have a Portuguese passport.
Goan Christians. Goan Hindus don't usually have this problem. Amazing how religion divides the same people doesn't it? Creating a different identity altogether.
India has plenty of Muslims who claim they were Arab, Persian, Turk. Vast majority of them were converted.
Same phenomenon with some people from Vietnam being keen on claiming French ancestry given the history of colonization
your grandpa definitely look anlgo-indian or eurasian. he had a hard time processing the fact though :D
I think he knew and was pretending to be surprised.
Did you ever do one?
Believe me they are Indians its inferiority complex
You and grandma seemed more excited that he is Indian. He didn't seem very pumped to be Indian. He kept deflecting the fact with remarks like "I'm % scandinavian" " but my father's side is full Anglo-Saxon, no drop of Indian blood". At the end he about had it when the 40%Dravidian was explained lol
LOL yeah. im sure he is more than 50% indian DNA probs 85% indian
InandaroundTO but this whole race finding is destructive there is only one race and that's Human.
Nikhil Sukumar
These aren't races. These are just ethnic groups and because no society is static, no one is going to get these DNA tests and find they are 100% something. To be 100% one ethnicity is to be inbred. It's not destructive because not one person can take this test and be 100% anything. These tests are living proof that we are all part of one race.
InandaroundTO that's good to hear. Yes we are all one.
I have also gotten back my DNA results.
It showed my grandma was spiderwoman and our mailman is my father.
Ahahhahahahahhahaha
Lancelot Xavier seriously is that true?
my dad was the milkman.
My father is the baker.
OMG the first second I saw your grandfather I knew for sure he was Indian
megminmay how me?
Yeah , even she look north Indian
She doesn't look fully North Indian... She looks like a shuttle mixture of North Indian and European (no particular European country).
@@priyakparmesh no
He does not look indian
I had a DNA test done and it reveled what I had long suspected. I'm one third pineapple, one third warthog and one third soft fluffy pancake.
:)
Sounds like a yummy breakfast! Bacon and pineapple pancake!
Mike Foley yum, I love soft fluffy pancakes!
Mike Foley you sir sound delicious!
Mike Foley no no no,
one third pen
one third apple
one third pineapple
Tell your granddad to accept the reality and be proud. Nothing wrong with being Indian
And tell him to chew with is mouth closed.
Lou Nunya omg i honestly cant watch the whole video. Dang it, i know its my hang up. I do feel really bad even guilty about it though!!
willis strokes lol 😂
It happens to be a better position for your neck. It starts to curve downward when using cell phones and PCs.
Tonka Goldman Lol even Indian don't want to be Indian apparantly, their women are leaving Indian men for other men in droves.
clicked on this video because i thought you were Indian and wanted to see what results Indians get
miss42310 me too. lol😊
I am Italian and when I first saw you I thought you were Indian
Her grandpa got mad depressed when she said he was part indian lol
+Alejandra Soprano he knew he was part Indian already from my DNA test a few months before. What he didn't know was the extent to which his mum had lied to him about who she was :(
But she must to have a reason to lied to him and why would she lied about something
like that??
+Alejandra Soprano it was during the British Raj when the Brits ruled India and had formed a society where natives were looked down upon and mixed race people were at risk of being rejected by both the Brits and the Indians, especially because they didn't fit into the structured caste system. Of course there would have been exceptions but it wasn't an ideal situation to be in. We'll never know the full story, but she maybe did it to be able to marry my British great grandfather for love, or to better her own standing in society as well as her future children's. Still, probably tough to hear when you're in your 70s!
Alejandra Soprano he just tilted his head. Looked more like surprise.
elozabeth how did his mom lie to him? Sorry im late to the party 😭
im so jealous. your grandparents are delightful
Aw thank you, I agree! :)
I wish I had grandparents so nice
He sounds and looks Indian. I'm not surprised seeing and hearing him.
he sounds indian but doesn't look that indian in my opinion
@@TheRageQueenTTV He doesn't look indian at all
@@imposter1721 no, he does not. I know northern indian people and they are not like him at all
@@imposter1721 bro, this test are not reliable, so maybe he has some indian in him but no so much
Super cool and interesting. Thanks for sharing with us!
Having a sun tan, doesn't make anyone Indian.
Double blind dna tests are far better
The Cultural Marxists are crowbarring this into everyone's "results"
This was lovely to watch, I'm Indian (Anglo-Indian + Goan), with British-Somali great grandparents. Just doing some research before I get a DNA test done. Your grandpa is adorable, and grandmum too, he definitely looks Goan, my dad is Goan has similar colour and features.
I don't know why people are being so rude and abusive to you. Please disregard the haters!
Ha, thanks doll ;)
+toofastforyall 85 thanks, I've spent a long time trying the different gedmatch tests in the past, but it seemed as though the proxies were more geared towards African or WHG populations rather than Asian so I don't quite trust the results, unless I'm looking at the wrong tests?? Any help appreciated! :)

First of all sign in with your account and password, second when you're on the main page scroll down to a section that says ''Analyze Your Data'' then click on Admixture ( heritage ) then it should link you to a page that says ''Admixture Utilities'' then there should be a little box saying ''Select the project'' then select the one that says ''Eurogenes'' you have to select that even if you're not fully European to get the end result of your autosomal test then after that where it says ''Select how you want to process it'' click the first circle at the side to select the ''Admixture Proportions (With link to Oracle)'' then click on the ''Click here to continue:'' button then afterwards select your kit number ( I assume you already have that ) then obviously wait a second to let it run
The end result should look like that as you can see South Indian should show up even if you have it in small or high proportions

So should Iberian but unfortunately it doesn't get specific on Spain S.France or Portugal it just says Western Mediterrenrean, sorry!
Thanks for the detail! Within the Eurogenes option though there is another dropdown with different models (K12, K13, ANE, etc.). Do you happen to know the difference between those? I have no idea if you're actually interested in the results or not, but on the off-chance here's what my grandpa gets in the K13 model:
North_Atlantic 24.50
Baltic 15.63
West_Med 4.20
West_Asian 9.94
East_Med 3.18
Red_Sea -
South_Asian 35.59
East_Asian 3.73
Siberian 2.15
Amerindian 0.79
Oceanian -
Northeast_African 0.26
Sub-Saharan -
Truthfully, when I first saw your grandfather I thought to myself of course he's Indian. Reminds me of my friend's grandad and he's full Indian, or so we think. Actually they could pass as twins only the skin tone is different.
I feel sad that he didn't know his true heritage until now, like he has missed out on it.
"I thought Malaysia was a disease..." 😂 your grandpa's hilarious 😀
Melanasia*
The most logical explanation is that her grandfather's mother belonged to a family of local Christians in Goa. The Portuguese mixed with the locals and brought them Christianity and their language.
So she might well have felt Portuguese and spoken Portuguese, but have still carried these Dravidian genes.
She could also have had some small percentage of Portuguese ancestry herself.
Your grandpa and ggrandma are so sweet!
Thank you!
You got to keep in mind that your DNA could pass down anything, that's why even siblings will have things that are like 50% Irish but the other could be only 10% .
Ana K No. There's definitely variation, but not that big a variation.
Breanna May My sister and I have a big difference in DNA heritage.
Ana K Did you do the test? What percentage did you each get?
because you're adopted
Dont Barud lol no.
Aw, your Granddad's reaction is so cute!
It isn't truly responsible for the fact
You grandad is definitely more indian ..... his genetic makeup even if fifty fifty ... very clearly an indian man in appearance ... goan catholic people do look suave and well groomed like your grandad they take a lot of pride in grooming themselves well
I can guarantee he knows KONKANI ... but will pretend he doesnt to prove he is caucasian and not indian
He is very SUSEKAAAT and fun though ... lovely to have a granddad like that !
But like most goan catholics who are converts in history , he seems to be upset and struggling with the fact that he has to accept he is indian genetically
And you dont need to be sorry for my cousin .... like your grandparents... she has successfully managed to surpass the indian origin because superficially being a very light skinned caucasian looking girl, and has the same identity crisis your grandparents had, for which they hid their indian origins from you .. she is just another goan catholic girl doing exactly the same thing what most goans do when they live abroad like your grandad for the fear of discrimination by having the term indian attached to them
your grandmother who is european ... watch HOW SHE LAID IMPETUS ON THE SOUTH ASIAN percentage ! She knows he is indian but is being mild and doesnt want to hurt the husband she loves and bare open his identity crisis
Less than 10% of Goans have mixed Portuguese ancestry
Also Goans r not just Catholic but Hindu too and a small minority of Muslim and Jain
I've noticed that Indians are really diverse concerning their looks. I've seen very pale Indians and really dark ones. Is the "Indian DNA" common for all of them, or are there various ethnic groups within India?
Most probably a mix. I think the hierarchy was based on colour too.
Sara Simm I only know about the Caste System, but I'm not sure if that was based on ethnic diversity or was simply a social discrimination.
joanna_k I'm not entirely sure, but some Indians are 'white' and usually in the higher castes.
Sara Simm Yes, I'm under the same impression as well.
joanna_k I'm trying to research it, but apparently Brahmins (priest class) and 70% of Saurashtrians have the allele A (SLC24A5) which is the gene causing paler skin. It seems to have come from the Gujurat region.
So cool....! Please post your Grandma's DNA results. Really interesting.
Even his attitude is like Desi uncles lol. adorable!
Grand Dad knew all this
This was great fun to watch :) Thanks for posting!
I look forward to seeing your Grams' results :)
Since DNA, is relatively new, I can understand why grandpa; did not know he was
part Indian!
If you travel outside the country perhaps you can plan ahead and mail one to yourself at the hotel. LOL>
Natanya T you think thats possible? but the would send it back to the same address... I dont have the money to stay at a hotel in France for 8 weeks...
Maigodseki It would possible if you were doing a semester abroad or visiting a friend or do an internship or something like that.
Aw your Grandparents are bloody lovely! :)
Thank you! They're my favourite people on the planet :)
Also the mix in you looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing! Awaiting my ancestry DNA results myself, it's exciting! :)
Aw thank you so much :) very exciting! What are your predictions?
Mostly European mix of eastern and western mainly I think, bit of Irish. Possibly a very small amount of African or Native American as my Great Great Gran moved over from the US to the UK in the 1890's and was mixed race from South America. Who knows though lol. :D Very exciting to have the technology to do this. :)
bloody?
Anastasia Lightfoot aa
You are so fortunate to HAVE a grandma and grandpa. Be happy for that!
that was fun... and can you share your grandparents with me?!? They're fabulous! You're a fortunate young lady!
Haha, thanks so much! I'm afraid you'd have to fight me for them...
It is so obvious that your grandfather is Indian just by looking at him. You even look Indian yourself.
I’m now trying to learn more about this part of me 😊
Colonial history doesn't play 100% in it ....
Indian subcontinent is oldest civilization!
Their history is only few centuries old, let them enjoy it, we can be the bigger men.
Love that bit when you said he only is 2% GB :D
being only 2% great Britain doesn't mean he wasn't anglo saxon. anglo saxon were a Germanic people all germanic people came originally from Scandinavia so it's normal for all to have percents from there also English people mixed heavily with the Celtic bretons his dad was most certainly English
agree
Not really, germanic have origin between siberia and Ukraine.
Isacc Alves Alves where on earth did you get that. the Indo europeans have an origin between ukraine and Siberia but the Germanic language and people's developed in Scandinavia and northern Germany and spread south from there
English people and Celtic Britons are the same people. Let me guess you're a jock right?
@Andrew Fishburn
English people (aka Anglo-Saxons) and Celtic Britons are not the same, why do you think the Irish and Scottish were fighting for independence throughout their history?
thanks for share your personnal and family story and dna results!! it s always a good thing to know your roots!!
I agree...your grandfather looks Indian.
Where is that DNA Land chart found? I've never seen that before, nor in my own Ancestry results.
Thanks! I've transferred my data to Gedmatch. Guess DNALand is next!
Ah cool! DNALand takes a day or so to process once you've uploaded it, but it's worth the wait :)
Nicole You husband speaks all South Indian languages except Malayalam, that is a bummer. അപ്പം ശരീ നടക്കട്ടെ.
Your Grandad is such a sweetheart! Loved his reaction!
When I saw your Grand pa I didn't even need to see the results, he looks so Indian! hahah This is very cool though, so much things had to be hidden back in those days. Thanks and take care xxx
the NSA thanks you for your compliance.
if I saw you're grandad on the street I would think he's indian!! he looks like my grandad who's fully indian. I've heard that lots of Indians have some pacific islander due to the "ancient indians'
That's pretty cool! Whereabouts in India are you from?
+lozzythesquirrel south india :) we're tamil
Also many Indians look Chinese, they are called Northeast Indian and people can't people they are Indian. so the east Asian may come from there.
the 11th century Denmark king makes sense with the Scandinavian. The Gujarati makes sense too. You might find this paper which touches upon Gujarati immigration history to Portugal interesting. In the olden days people covered it up if they married an Indian and called that person "Portuguese" and this is how it was convenient. gcids2017.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Rita-Cachado-and-In%C3%AAs-Louren%C3%A7o-Full-Paper.pdf
grandpas so cute💖 he's chewing that gum!!!
That was really interesting, I can't wait to get mine done!
Your grandpa is adorable!!!
Your grandparents are adorable!! What a sweet video. 🙂
Great video!
I enjoyed watching your grandpa reading the results.
I guess people don't know Portuguese people very well because you both could pass for Portuguese plus your grandfather sounds Portuguese. I very happy that you were able to find out about your Indian heritage.
As an Indian, I can tell you that your Grandpa does look like us....a lil bit. If he came here and said his name was "Bharat", we'd be like "Cool".
haha I love you grandparents!!
he looks like Rolf Harris
I thought that too!
goa that is in India was Portuguese territory until 1961 who was born there till that date was a Portuguese citizen
I can see the Indian ancestry strong on him. He looks more Indian than I look Iranian and my gf looks Iraqi-Syrian. In which we have ancestry.
You guys are crazy in brain. You can't see a sh it on him, he doesn't look at all indian
@@michelealbanese3261 he totally looks like my great grand father and I’m North Indian. India is most diverse country in the world.
@@rovercanvas it's not true, indians are the same especially in the south
@@michelealbanese3261 majority of population of India lives in northern regions , and population of northern region can easily cover almost Europe so your point is irrelevant.
@@rovercanvas I knew just dark skinned indians, only 1 more clear
you are so blessed to still have them! I like how he fixes his hair, very handsome. cant wait to see your grandmothers!!
This always cracks me up because people are always going to be getting it on no matter what society says 😂
That was wholesome. I loved your grandpa.
Not sure what side they migrated from. My Great Uncle has East Asian dna, so they migrated and went to sicily id guess.
Could have been on both sides, but probably more rare. Have you seen "Indian Summers" on PBS? Anyway, my Dads family is from Sicily, no British there. Mine seem to have migrated from Asia and moved West.
LiGht YaGami oh yah. totally makes sense!
I mean I find it hard to believe he didn't know he was half Indian, literally look at him. his mother was full Indian and it's hard to believe he wouldn't have realized loll
Your Grandpa looks a little Indian.
Your DNA makeup seems to be a perfect mix, you are beautiful young woman!
His Indian genes look pretty dominant in his look and colour. And he says No Indian blood, lol!
Grandpa looks totally Indian
I'm fully Portuguese and I can say the 6% on your test is very strong! You look like you could fit in very well in my family 😂
Hahaha the grandpa looks Indian and gotta love his denial.
When the British East India Company first became established it was not unusual for British men to marry Indian women .Later when the British took over Indian and established the Raj the dominance of the British was established and racism enforced as part of the power dynamic.
Anglo-Indians

Jesus, his mother must have been 80% Dravidian in order for him to be 40%, the average north Indian is only like 25% Dravidian, his mother must have been extremely dark skinned, aint no foundation covering up that blackness, you can tell from his reaction the way he's sticking his tongue out, he knew his mother was Indian - just didnt want to tell anyone
This man knows he's indian.
He looks and sounds exactly like Dr. Basdeo Panday.
You from Trinidad?
