President Bill Clinton on Gun Safety

  • James welcomes former President Bill Clinton to Stage 56 to discuss assault weapon legislation and the difficulties to reach an agreement on this issue. Because he grew up in a culture of firearms, Clinton offers advice on communication between people who disagree about gun rights. Clinton then expands on what's next in the fight to pass laws that will protect people and children from gun violence. And on a note of positivity, Clinton says focusing on children's futures is the best way to stay optimistic.

I feel like it’s important for me to first say that I’ve always been a conservative and still am. With that out of the way, I cannot tell you how absolutely nostalgic this interview made me feel. I’ve never liked the Clintons, however, I am honest enough to give this man credit for some good things he accomplished while in office. What really hit me with this particular interview is how sincere he came across. It has been well over a decade since we’ve had a president that doesn’t immediately make things about “us” vs “them”. They are all so divisive. Every single one of them. And we let them divide us. I’m not saying Clinton or Bush Sr or Jr didn’t pick sides in a battle, but at least during those times, we all still talked to each other and weren’t practically terrified of coming out and admitting our political beliefs at work, with our own families, or in public settings in general. The fact that we’ve gotten to that point is disheartening and sickening to me.
I honestly don’t know if we will ever get back to some level of civility between our divergent views or beliefs, but I do truly hope and pray that we will soon realize that what President Clinton said in this interview can save us from destroying our democracy, because that is exactly what we’re doing and heading toward. We really need to talk *to* each other, not *at* each other, and then we need to *respectfully* listen to each other and recognize that in the times we’re in now, sometimes compromise will be the only way forward. We need to stop holding back the good that could be done for our country by having this “all or nothing” mentality that sadly plagues the minds of our congressional representatives on both sides of the aisle. For far too long, not even something as awful as all these school shootings have been able to get a majority of us to agree. We will not ever be able to move forward if we do not compromise. Simple as that.
Anyway, that’s all I have to share. It was just genuinely refreshing to see a truly presidential leader on that couch.

Hmmm slight revisionist history on your part. Let’s not ‘both-sides’ this. The divisiveness started when Obama became President and McConnell and Paul Ryan responded with, and I quote “our goal is to make sure he fails in everything.” So if they made up their minds to reject all his plans before he even presented them, how the F was a conversation supposed to happen.
Representatives are a reflection of their voters. GA voters don’t have to keep voting Marjorie Green into Congress, yet here we are.

We're too different in basic ethics and values to have a genuine conversation anymore.
It's natural to be divided when the two sides can't even agree on objective reality.
I'm also personally offended at suggesting the idea of "compromise" when I have yet to see the Left compromise anything on gun control while the government continues to further and further restrict gun rights. So can we expect any kind of attempt at them moving towards us in the middle?

@@lisasmith5030 So True 👍 👌. You are 💯correct. Some tend to have selective memory. McConnell with his hateful divisive rhetoric started this. Let's not forget the Republican Party voted for Donald Trump out of 16 other candidates to include the so called Conservatives after we all saw what kind of person Trump was and then put this crooked, lying, racist, despicable, narcissist in the highest office of our land. Many of us alway knew that the Republican Party had racist tendencies but Trump just brought it to the forefront what we suspected all along.

The Republican party values now appear to be lying, cheating, dishonesty, morally corrupt ignoring and denying facts, science and creating alternativefacts to suit their narrative. I'm not sure where the ethics in the party exist @ all. Those few Republican that stand up for truth and doing the right thing are then treated as pariahs. if you can call the party a party. All of the values that the Republican Party used to tote as their values went out the window with the election of Trump because his values & ethics are in the gutter.

I see Republicans screw everything up then Democrats have to fix it but get blamed for the mess Republicans made while fixing it. Then when we are close to progressing, Americans vote in Republicans who screw it all up again. Being on the left means thinking outside your own bubble and helping all, believing in equality. It's not a bad thing like the right says. Right now, Republicans just blocked lowering prices. Smart voters will vote blue and get the senate to 60 votes. But bc the wrong side gets blamed, it will most likely be a red wave and nothing will get passed.

The Democrats falsely named these guns assault rifles to demonize them. They are semi automatic guns just like hunting rifles. Actually the AR15 is weaker than most hunting rifles. Most states won't allow people to hunt deer with AR15's because they are not powerful enough to kill the deer and would just injure it, causing suffering. Any gun could be used to assault someone with. A 30-06 deer rifle would cause more damage than a person being shot with an AR15.

@cyan ... for the record, American society and its media/news have a global impact. You can't proclaim 'Leadership of the Free World' and then wash your hands of the world having an opinion about how your society functions. Example: A day following the US tragedy, a 20 year old man, less than an hour from where I live, took his hunting shotgun out for a walk because he was having a bad day and had been impacted by the news coverage of the US school shooting. There were 3 schools within minutes of the block he was reported to be on. Fortunately, (1) we can't legally take our firearms out for a walk, (2) someone saw the young man out in public, (3) the sighting was called in, and (4) police responded to the scene. Unfortunately after refusing to drop the gun and instead raised his gun, he was shot dead. Sadly, it appears he was hoping to commit suicide by cop, figuring that even OUR 🇨🇦 Canadian police would be on heightened alert after such a devastating loss of life south of the border. So with all due respect, get your head out of the sand, SORRY... first get your head out of your ass and then work on getting it out of the sand!!!

Responsible people shouldn’t mind if there are checks to be done and criteria to be met in order to own a gun. Those people will meet that criteria and will be able to have their guns. It’s the people who shouldn’t have them that will be affected and they are the ones that need to be monitored. It’s just common sense. When Clinton was running for President, I declared that if he won, I'd move to Canada. I'm not a Democrat and never have been. However, as Solo Dolo Trevino said, with bi-partisan support (Graham-Rudman) he balanced the budget. Also, he comes from a humble upbringing and hasn't forgotten those people who raised him and who elected him. He knows the common man though he is very wealthy now. He obviously still hasn't forgotten. Another I think about, he was a Rhodes Scholar and is a very intelligent man on top of being quite charismatic. I literally knew his biological aunt in Grayson County, Texas. I know just how humble of a background he came from. Frankly, I didn't support him and never voted for him, but, aside from his moral failings, he was a great president. This became most evident when we compare him to the ones who followed after his two terms in office.

In Canada they have had strict gun control for decades. There was a national gun registry started in 1995 so police would know the location of every legal firearm in the country. It has not taken guns away from hunters, collectors or competitive sports shooters. In fact Canada has one of the highest levels of gun ownership per capita in the western world. We also have few mass shootings compared to the U.S. There are also mandatory minimums for anyone in possession of an illegal firearm.

I always enjoy listening to him in interviews or things like when he did a chat with George W ... both of them actually came across really well. Also loved Corden in this interview, knowing to leave well alone because President Bill takes long pauses ... some interviewers would jump down other's throats at the opportunity to ask another question instead of letting them answer in their own time!
