Dear Ms. Grandma Feral - you can greatly reduce the chance of lumps by adding 1 cup of cold water to the cornmeal and letting it stand while bringing the other 3 cups of water to the boil. Then add the wet cornmeal to the pot and do as you already do. Thank you for your history - please can we have some more 30's to 80's recipes.
I grew up with this and haven't had it for probably 70 years! But as soon as I get cornmeal in the pantry, I will relive my childhood favorite. At our house, we had it more for "supper".
At our house growing up we would have it at times for supper then mom would pour what is left over in a pan and put it in the refrigerator. Then in the morning she would take the firm version of it and cut it in about half inch slices and fry it in a pan with butter. We would have stewed crackers, mush, eggs and scrapple. With tomato gravy or beef gravy. Yummy
I just read corn meal mush recipe in my grandmas 1956 Betty Crocker cookbook she got before she got married in 1955 that I’m learning how to cook out of. I couldn’t figure out the recipe so I came to TH-cam. 😃 I am excited to make it tomorrow for my 3 boys, and yes it is in the supper section
When I was about 10 my mom asked me if I would like to eat something from her childhood. I always thought my mom was a great cook n my mom was born 1923 n the oldest of 14. She made cornmeal n a pot of beans with all of the seasoning that grew in her window sill in Puerto Rico. I really enjoyed that plate n she smiles and said its poor peoples food. She really worked miracles with what she had at hand
My grandma added everything to half water half carnation milk or coconut milk add sugar to taste and cinnamon. All cold then place on stove stir till cooked and thick. Sometimes half a teaspoon of vanilla.
We used to have this quite often as a child. I remember once we practically lived on this for a week till dad's check came in. Mom would put some in loaf pan in fridge overnight, then slice and fry it in morning. Pour syrup over it. Loved it.
Hi William enjoyed your comment. Growing up we had rice and milk many times in a week when funds were low. Thank you so much for watching and have a nice day.❤️Grandma👩🏻
Oh my gosh, I completely forgot about eating this. My mother made this for me when I was young, I'm in my mid 60's now. I ate it quite frequently, I enjoyed mine with a little milk and white sugar. I'm going to make it soon, thanks for the memories.
My grandma lived through the depression then raised me along with my parents. We grew up on this stuff and what didnt get used up was fried up as pancakes. She recently passed and i have been looking up recipes that she would have made. Stay gold guys!

A little cream and sugar (or brown sugar, molasses etc...) and you have one of the best snacks on Earth. I've always loved cornmeal mush. I'm always on the lookout for any type of sweet porridge. 5 Stars!
My grandpa used to make cornmeal mush every winter. He would pour it into a bread pan and cool it in the refrigerator. Grandma would take it out of the pan the next day, slice it and fry it in bacon fat. Slather it with butter and pour on the maple syrup! Farm life.
Yes, we did it the same way, with the leftovers. Next day sliced and browned in bacon fat in the old cast iron skillet, butter and syrup as a garnish. Yes, I grew up on a farm, too!
Thank you for another wonderful story and recipe, Grandma Feral. I'm with Grandpa Feral, I love cinnamon and brown sugar! I don't use salt either when I cook, if someone wants it they can add it before eating. ❤💝❤
WALMART sells tubes of pre-made Polenta. Its not full of preservatives either. Its usually in the baking Isle, if not just ask or you can Google shop it on your phone to find the location of it in your local Walmart store. It still sells for under 3 dollars. You can slice it and warm it in the microwave and add warm milk to make it into cereal in a bowl add your own toppings or fruit.. Or you can slice it and fry it in butter in a non stick pan and use the fried Polenta slice for a sandwich or serve it with bacon and an egg. You can also use it in thin slices to make a Polenta lasagna if you layer it with spaghetti sauce and shredded cheese and bake in the oven. Or you can fry it and serve it with a scoop of ice cream or chocolate sauce. Its very versatile and so many ways to make it tasty. Mom would make mush from Cream Of Wheat. I LOVED it when there were lumps in it! Fried mush in our house was when Mom would put a batch in a loaf pan and the next morning slice off pieces and fry in butter. We would eat it with syrup, powdered sugar, and butter. I taught my kids how to make it and they still do! Thanks Grandma!
We grew up eating this alot. We added butter and honey. Our favorite way to eat it was fried though. The night before make your mush, take a bread pan and grease it with bacon grease. Add your warm mush to pan and pop in cold oven. Let set in oven over night. In the morning turn out, cut thick slices and fry on griddle with bacon grease. Can take with you to eat on the go.

My grandmom used to make cream of wheat and quickly swirl in an egg after the farina was thickened and before it cooled. The egg makes it very rich tasting.

That looks really good. I've heard of it before, but never really knew what it was. I love cream of wheat and oatmeal, so I bet I would like this. Thanks for sharing. Take care!
Mmmm, comfort food! I like to make savory versions for supper, now, and often save the leftovers to slice and fry up another day. Love the sweet flavor of cornmeal; we used to eat red beans with a ham bone, and Mom made cornbread in the big black iron skillet with bacon fat. It was as good as any dessert.
Looks so good and it’s so inexpensive to make. Great combination. Congratulations on 13.5 K subscribers Grandma!! Did you ever think your channel would grow so big? So glad you started making videos. 😻💙💙

My grandmother still makes this for me. We call it cornmeal porridge, though. She throws in a stick of cinnamon and a bay leaf from the start. Finished with brown sugar and evaporated milk.
My mother made this as a side dish. It was called palinta in our house. Mom used to make it every time we had beef stew cooked in tomato sauce. We put the palinta in the bowl and poured the stew over it. This was one of my favorite meals. This was also very economical for feeding a family of nine. 💕 💕 💕
I want to try that! I am always looking for ways to feed my family of 7. My 6 year old is kind of picky. He always asks" what's in there"? What's that green thing🙄🤷
My Mama would take the mush or polenta and put it in a bread pan. She'd then refrigerate it and it would set up so she could slice it. She would then pan fry it golden and we would put syrup on it. It was so good!
Ty we use to soak hard cornbread in warm milk , put butter and honey on it I haven’t thought about that in yrs I have 6 siblings, and in my 50 s nothing went to waste bc my mother grew up in depression 👍🙏❤️

Great video, you make it easy to follow. I like both sweet and savory cornmeal mush, at different times, always with a dab of butter. For sweet, a couple of ways I like is with honey, or with pumpkin pie spice blend. For savory, I like lemon pepper Mrs. Dash seasoning and parmesan cheese.
I am reading The Grapes Of Wrath. In the book Ma Joad prepares Mush for the family. Ma also cooks a lot with grease and flour with side meat and potatoes. Sounds like proper food to me.
Growing up we ate a LOT of oatmeal. Mother bought store made "mush" which she fried. Added a little butter and maple syrup was a nice treat. Love your videos. 💕
I love cornmeal mush! I never heard of it until I married my husband 30 years ago. His mom always made it for him and his sisters when they were growing up. We like it with butter, and homemade croutons, made by cutting up bread into bite size pieces and frying them in butter until they are crispy. So good!

My mother loves this. She made some yesterday. She usually adds the sugar to the mix and whips in an egg if she has to spare, then sprinkled with the cinnamon. I grew up eating this often. I prefer the creamy version made with cornstarch but my mom loves this one with the cornmeal especially the coarse meal which comes out very grainy.
Thank you for sharing about your mother making this and that she whips in an egg. Grandpa and I will be adding an egg next time we make it. Thank you for watching and have a good day👩🏻
@@GrandmaFeral thanks for your reply Grandma! I love your videos and have binge watched a bunch the last couple of days. I mentioned to my mom about the mush and she told me that she actually only puts sugar in it because my dad has a sweet tooth and won't eat it if it's not sweet. She says she prefers it the original way and when she was a child it was a great treat to add a little milk to the plate so each warm spoonful had a little creamy milk mixed with it. I find it curious that alot of these depression era meals were things i grew up eating because we liked them. They were made by my mom and auntie because they ate them growing up and liked them. But they weren't from the USA. They grew up on a poor little island in the Atlantic. I think maybe alot of the depression era foods were probably based on things poor immigrants grew up on in alot of different countries from all over the world. Thank you for sharing your knowledge ☺️ Tonight i think I'm going to try the creamed tuna on toast ( with the peas of course), it reminds me of a meal my mom sometimes made but it was with leftover chicken instead of tuna. My sister and I loved it and would look forward to this meal more than the chicken meal the day before! 💕 😘

Mom and I used to have cream of wheat when I was little, and still have oatmeal, but I don't think I have had cornmeal mush for breakfast. Filling, economic and tasty, this would have been a godsend in the Depression.
Thanks for doing this video. I am going to make some simple, and cheap recipes like this, and share. I think it might be a good time for people to know how to eat cheap, and also get full on not many calories.
I learned this recipe recently. I like it with some hot sauce as it reminds me of tamales. It's cheap and filling. I can't ask for much more than that.
We would make it eat it like that in a bowl. With left overs we would put them left overs in muffins pan. Set in cold fridge or cold porch covered. Then in moring pop them out cup them in to circles and fry them in bacon grease. I liked it fried the best.
@@CarterKey6 i was just going to say i dont' see much difference except the yellow cornmeal vs. white, but no matter what you call it, it is all delicious! i prefer it with butter, salt and pepper and sometimes hot sauce

Thank you for watching and if you try the cornmeal you will like it👩
Thank you for sharing this. It makes me actually think of little house on the prairie eating this.
You are so welcome! ❤️Grandma👩🏻

Yummy!!! I used to have that when I traveled down South. They also serve that with gravy!
Will have to try it that way. Thanks for watching👩
Thank you for sharing. My wife & I appreciate everything you’ve made it through to get here to share this with us. All our best to you.
Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Mmmm, comfort food! I like to make savory versions for supper, now, and often save the leftovers to slice and fry up another day. Love the sweet flavor of cornmeal; we used to eat red beans with a ham bone, and Mom made cornbread in the big black iron skillet with bacon fat. It was as good as any dessert.
Thank you for sharing and watching👩
Looks so good and it’s so inexpensive to make. Great combination. Congratulations on 13.5 K subscribers Grandma!! Did you ever think your channel would grow so big? So glad you started making videos. 😻💙💙
Thank you! No I never thought it would grow so big. Thank you for watching👩
I will be trying your corn 🌽 meal mush this weekend...looks delicious 😋
Glad to hear you will be making the corn meal mush. Enjoy and thank you for watching 👩🏻
Growing up we always had the gelled kind and Mom fried it I've never had it as a hot cereal.
I've also never had grits Guess it's time as an adult now ~~ to try both of them !!!
Thanks for a great video. Be blessed !
Thank you for watching👩
My grandmother still makes this for me. We call it cornmeal porridge, though. She throws in a stick of cinnamon and a bay leaf from the start. Finished with brown sugar and evaporated milk.
Thank you for sharing how your Grandmother makes it. Must be very tasty. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
My mother made this as a side dish. It was called palinta in our house. Mom used to make it every time we had beef stew cooked in tomato sauce. We put the palinta in the bowl and poured the stew over it. This was one of my favorite meals. This was also very economical for feeding a family of nine. 💕 💕 💕
Thank you for sharing. Sounds so good with the stew on top. Thank you for watching👩
I want to try that! I am always looking for ways to feed my family of 7. My 6 year old is kind of picky. He always asks" what's in there"? What's that green thing🙄🤷
I literally scrolled the comments to find a recipe like this! Thank u!
My Mama would take the mush or polenta and put it in a bread pan. She'd then refrigerate it and it would set up so she could slice it. She would then pan fry it golden and we would put syrup on it. It was so good!
❤I would love this! Thank you for this recipi❤ I'm trying it! Love to you and Grandpa Feral....
Thank you for watching👩
Ty we use to soak hard cornbread in warm milk , put butter and honey on it I haven’t thought about that in yrs I have 6 siblings, and in my 50 s nothing went to waste bc my mother grew up in depression 👍🙏❤️
Thank you for sharing and watching👩
I love cream of wheat,grits,oatmeal..I bet I will love this recipe..I will try this asap, thank you so much for sharing
I am happy to hear you will be trying this recipe👩🏻
Grandma Feral, I do not know how to cook, however, love Italian food. Simple Italian recipes would be fantastic. Have a great week and no salt is perfect for me.
One migraine sufferer to another, I understand your eschewing salt as a migraine trigger (meat is my trigger, so I went vegetarian) -- and E-mail me at crbarboni (at) gmail (dot) com if you'd like to try my late mother's simple Italian home recipes.
@@semperfi818 Hello C.R. Barboni!!!! So happy to see you here. Yes, if you have very simple Italian recipes, I would love to try them. It is about time I learned how to cook. I cringe when I have to toss out spoiled food ----- left over ingredients which are used once for a psrticular recipe. I have been transitioning to a vegetarian diet , not quite all vegetarian. I shall email you with subject : Italian recipes ------- Grandma Feral channel. THANK YOU C.R. BARBONI!!!!! ☺☺☺

Love Cornmeal Mush. I serve mine with a nice pat of butter and crack a little black pepper. Or I put a dash of sage in the cooking process. Yummy
Thank you for sharing how you prepare and serve your Cornmeal Mush. I will definitely try it that way next time I make it. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
@@GrandmaFeral your so welcome. Thanks for posting your videos. PS when I cook it with sage. I still just use butter and cracked pepper. I don’t like my cornmeal sweet But I do with oatmeal
Thank you for sharing what seasoning you add to your cornmeal mush. We will be trying them. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
I am reading The Grapes Of Wrath. In the book Ma Joad prepares Mush for the family. Ma also cooks a lot with grease and flour with side meat and potatoes. Sounds like proper food to me.
Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Growing up we ate a LOT of oatmeal. Mother bought store made "mush" which she fried. Added a little butter and maple syrup was a nice treat. Love your videos. 💕
Sounds great! Have a nice day❤️Grandma👩🏻
I love Grandma's videos. She gives me ASMR. :)
Thank you for you kind words and for watching 👩🏻
Grandma Feral, could you please make your recipe for bread pudding? 🤓🌸👍🏼✨💝
Sure Will👩
Grandma Feral , thank you so much! It’s one of my favorites n I’m excited to try your recipe. 💝👍🏼💯
I love cornmeal mush! I never heard of it until I married my husband 30 years ago. His mom always made it for him and his sisters when they were growing up. We like it with butter, and homemade croutons, made by cutting up bread into bite size pieces and frying them in butter until they are crispy. So good!
Hi thank you for sharing what you like on your cornmeal mush. I have never heard of having it with homemade croutons. Will give it a try. Have a great day❤️Grandma👩🏻
I have plenty of oatmeal and farina and granola and now will add some corn meal to my pantry, most of the time l eat an apple or green smoothie for breakfast but love a hot creamy cereal once in a while 🥰 thank you for this simple recipe l will add a little stevia sea salt and plant milk.
Thank you for sharing what you have for breakfast. Glad you will add the Cornmeal. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
"All gone!" That's a wonderful endorsement!

My father use to make this then pour it into a loaf pan stick into the refrigerator until It sets up then slice it into sizable strips pan fry it on both sides until it becomes golden crispy brown , serve with butter and salt and pepper or just real maple syrup. That’s fried corn meal mush.. delicious!
Thank you for sharing about your Father frying the cornmeal mush. I do have a video about Grandpa frying the cornmeal mush. Thank you for watching and have a good day👩🏻

I had this often growing up in the 80's but ours was made with raisins/sultanas, cinnamon sugar & butter. Your's looks so good I'm making it in the morning for my children 😋

Let it gel in the fridge overnight then fry it
Yes!
My Grandmother used mush as pie crust for tamale pie. I eat it with butter.

Delicious. I make it with a savoury taste. I might add salt & butter or crumbed feta cheese. I will try white corn meal with sugar and cinnamon Thank you
Thank you for watching👩
Lol You made me laugh when you said you like lumps in it! I thought I was the only one who liked lumpy hot cereals. Lol My Dad used to make a delicious lumpy (as requested) cream of wheat for me on winter mornings before school! I have some corn meal....might have to try this! Does Lucky have you set up on Instagram? I,ll send a pic when I do this! Stay healthy you two and hi to Lucky!
Glad you also like lumpy hot cereals. I am set up on Instagram but have not posted anything. Thank you for watching and Stay Well👩
I've never had cornmeal mush, but I've had cornmeal potato soup. Thanks for sharing your recipe.
I have never had cornmeal potato soup. Sounds interesting❤️Grandma👩🏻
Wow! Thanks again! I'll make this for breakfast later on.
Hi glad to hear you will be making this for breakfast. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
wow. so simple, looks like comfort food.
Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Thank you for sharing your knowledge ☺️
Tonight i think I'm going to try the creamed tuna on toast ( with the peas of course), it reminds me of a meal my mom sometimes made but it was with leftover chicken instead of tuna. My sister and I loved it and would look forward to this meal more than the chicken meal the day before! 💕 😘
We got to start eating this way again will make
I am glad to hear you will be making the Cornmeal Mush. Thank you so much for watching👩🏻
Don't let too many people know how good and inexpensive cornmeal is. Because it won't be for long!
Lol! 🤣 It's already been hard to find.
Your right👩
I used to have cornmeal mush with my Grandma as a kid at Bob Evans. After she passed, I would order it at Bob Evans because it reminded me of her and brought back warm memories. It has since been taken off the menu.
Hi we have been to Bob Evans when we traveled down south. What a nice memory to have enjoyed cornmeal mush with your Grandma there. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻

Thank you for watching from Southern California. Glad to hear you will be making the cornmeal mush.👩🏻
Mom and I used to have cream of wheat when I was little, and still have oatmeal, but I don't think I have had cornmeal mush for breakfast. Filling, economic and tasty, this would have been a godsend in the Depression.
Farina, cream of wheat, Maypo, and cornmeal mush. Oatmeal we had less often---probably took too long to cook.
Hi We also like cream of wheat and oatmeal for breakfast. Stay Well👩
@@patriciamorgan6545 Have you had Red River Cereal?

I learned this recipe recently. I like it with some hot sauce as it reminds me of tamales. It's cheap and filling. I can't ask for much more than that.
Sounds great! Thanks for sharing❤️Grandma👩🏻
I make it with milk and cream cheese, parmesan cheese and butter, yum! 😋💜🌸🍃
Oo! and gravy 😊

We would make it eat it like that in a bowl. With left overs we would put them left overs in muffins pan. Set in cold fridge or cold porch covered. Then in moring pop them out cup them in to circles and fry them in bacon grease. I liked it fried the best.
Thank you for sharing how you prepared your left overs. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻

Depression = cornmeal mush. Fancy schmancy 2019/2020 = _polenta._
Lol in the south we call it grits
@@CarterKey6 i was just going to say i dont' see much difference except the yellow cornmeal vs. white, but no matter what you call it, it is all delicious! i prefer it with butter, salt and pepper and sometimes hot sauce
@@CarterKey6 From what I have experienced, grits are grittier than polenta. Taste wise, though, there isn't much difference.
@@englishatheart yeah it kinda depends on hominy or corn grits but my son will only eat polenta and hates grits
Not the same as grits but very similar in texter
We were so poor my mother couldn't even buy corn meal. Now that I'm 65 and older I tried cooking different things with corn meal such as corn bread. It's good. I never thought about putting brown sugar and cinnamon on it. That looks delicious.
