  • These are not traditional wedding shlokas, but chants selected and curated by Shunori and Zach to represent their relationship and joining of cultures on their wedding day
    🎵 Composed by Gaiea
    Produced by Auburn Jam Music
A selection of some beautiful Sanskrit mantras to honour your union
    1. When wedding fire is lit
    śubhaṃ karoti kalyānaṃ ārogyaṃ dhanasaṃpadā
    śatrubuddhivināśāya dīpajyotirnamo'stute
    Salutations and salutations,
To the holy flame of the lamp,
Which bestows on this couple all that is good,
    Health as well as wealth,
    And destroys all their enemies.
    2. oṃ asato mā sadgamaya
    tamaso mā jyotirgamaya
    mṛtyormā amṛtaṃ gamaya
    oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ
Lead me from the unreal to the real
From the darkness to the light
    From death to immortality
Let there be peace, peace, peace
    3. For the four circles that the couple does around the circle, representing the principles of Sanātana Dharma (Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha)
    adrohaḥ sarvabhūteṣu karmaṇā manasā girā
anugrahaśca dānaṃ ca satāṃ dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ
The eternal Dharma of the good consists of not harming any creature by action, thought, or speech, and of kindness and giving (Dharma)
    vidyā dadāti vinayaṃ vinayādyāti pātratām
    pātratvāddhanamāpnoti dhanāddharmaṃ tataḥ sukham
Knowledge brings humility; from humility comes worthiness; with worthiness one attains wealth; with wealth one is able to perform his duties in a better way; and in performing his duties one attains happiness (Artha)
gate śoko na kartavyo bhaviṣyaṃ naiva cintayet
    vartamānena kālena vartayanti vicakṣaṇāḥ
The past is not worth mourning. Don't worry for the future. The wise advise to live only in the present (Kāma)
    nirapekṣo nirvikāro nirbharaḥ śītalāśayaḥ
    agādhabuddhirakṣubdho bhava cinmātravāsanaḥ
You are unconditioned and changeless, formless and immovable, unfathomable awareness and unperturbable, so hold on to nothing but consciousness. (Moksha)
    4. This is followed by a common tradition between Jewish custom and Hindu/Jain custom called Hakafot (7 circles) / Saptapadi
For each step, there is a short Sanskrit sloka to be recited
    iṣā ekapadī bhava iti prathamam
    ūrje dvipadī bhava iti dvitīyam
    vratāya tripadī bhava iti tṛtīyam
māyo bhavāya catuśpadī bhava iti caturtham
    paśubhyā paṃcapadī bhava iti paṃcamam
    rāyaspoṣāya ṣaṭpadī bhava iti ṣaṣṭam
    hotrebhyaḥ saptapadī bhava iti saptamam
With this first step, we provide for and support each other
With this second step, we will be resilient and strong in body, mind and spirit
With this third step, we will share all wordly possessions
With this fourth step, we will live in harmony offering constant love to one another
With this fifth step, we will have a family and nurture them together
With the sixth step, we will enjoy the fruits of all seasons
With this seventh step, we will always remain friends and cherish each other
    sakhā saptapadī bhava
    sakhyaṃte gameyam
    sakhyaṃte māyośaḥ
    sakhyaṃte māyoṣṭaḥ
With these seven steps, may you become my friend.
    May I deserve your friendship.
May my friendship make me one with you.
May your friendship make you one with me.

My wedding was nearly 30 years ago now, but I'm sure I'm not alone in wishing I could've had this sung at my wedding, and especially by Gabriella Burnel. The seven steps of a marriage are described with an absolutely beautiful song, with a truly gifted singer, and the mystical language of Sanskrit is truly magical. Besides Gabriella's beautiful voice, the instruments or Vadya played are absoilutely beautiful - from the beginning of the tanpura (to provide the constant background 'drone' so crucial to Sanskrit music) to the striking of the bells, the venu (Sanskrit: वेणु; veṇu) or side-blown flute, the striking of the Kashtha tarang (a xyloophone), to the sitar. These are all hauntingly beautiful and mystical, seeming to be like heavenly benedictions whenever they're heard. Having studied Classical languages for some decades, Sanskrit truly is a mystical and magical language. It is the most complete language I've seen, a language which is extremely complex but which has such precision and depth.

Language of contemplation, peace, harmony and goodwill to all, of capitulation and non-violence.
India has followed this policy for thousands of years. It worked during the Vedic period. But soon after, invasions came from the north-west, from neighbors, from Mohamadans, Christian nations like Britain, France, Portugal, Netherland. The vedic people treated them like guests. But they plundered for gold, spices, tea, diamonds. They enslaved the women. Did you know that all officers of The East India Trading company were given 5-6 young girls who stayed in Bibighars (houses for wives), where several generations of Anglo-Indians were produced, year after year. Now these Anglo-indians considered themselves English by birth. They had more rights than their mothers.
Has non-violence worked? It can only work if your neighbors also believe in non-violence. Look at Bharat's history. From being reknowned as a "golden sparrow", the rich gentle culture, it was enslaved and plundered . The Brits even dismantled old temples and shipped them ito England. They are now being displayed in the British Museum. A thief gloats and proudly displays this art as his own.
But the Germans were forced to return all art stolen by the Nazis. Go figure!
Gandhi's policy of non-violence caused one-third of India declared as Pakistan.
Contemplate on this and teach your children accordingly. Good Luck.

Anu Radha,.Language of contemplation, peace, harmony and goodwill to all, of capitulation and non-violence.

From being reknowned as a "golden sparrow", the rich gentle culture, it was enslaved and plundered . The Brits even dismantled old temples and shipped them ito England.
