You just described my 88 year old father. I see him just go into his own mind when those around him are talking because he's not able to keep up. He refuses to talk to old friends, won't attend Thanksgiving or Christmas gatherings. He does have early dimentia and hearing loss. He's isolating more and more. I had no idea there was that big of a connection... thanks for sharing that information.

You're welcome. I have noticed that it helps to know that you are not alone and you're not making this stuff up. I am sorry about your experience with your father. Hang in there and don't stop trying. Remember that it is hard for him for sure but it is also hard for you and anyone who cares about him. Keep watching my videos and learn more tips for making things easier and more successful. If he really can't see his way to joining in on family functions, maybe start by having a smaller group go visit him or maybe just you. One on one is so much easier. If it's a small group, make sure to take turns and that he knows who is talking before they talk. sending warm support.

Before I got hearing aids, I felt so isolated since I could not hear much of what people were saying. I would be embarrassed to continually ask people to repeat themselves, and that doesn't work when there is a group of people talking because you miss the flow. I missed jokes and didn't know why everyone was laughing. I would avoid gatherings because they were frustrating and disheartening. Getting hearing aids changed my life and I am so grateful for them.

I wish people cared more about communicating and not their texting and e-mails. We need to back to eye contact and verbal communication. Young people talk so fast I tell them i can't understand what they said. I mean in a doctor's office needs to be professional.

I agree with you 100% Having been a medical interpreter now for over 25 years, it's my job to listen and understand. So often the medical folks just move so fast. If I have a moment alone to talk to them, I emphasize slowing down and making things visual. Show them the thermometer to indicate you're about to touch their forehead, for example. Thanks for the comment. We can all make a difference.
